Q&A with Gilles Vidal, vp of design, Renault Group

This is the primary new Renault beneath your course. What makes it completely different?

“We were able to start from a blank sheet of paper – one very important thing. “The mission was to make the car assertive, especially at the front and rear, but not to overload it with details. The sharp, shape-defining lines have helped a lot. We think the wider stance carries a special promise of driving pleasure. There’s cladding along the sides to split the masses and make the car look sleeker, too. And we’ve worked hard on the unique wheel styles. “The promise is that this is a great driver’s car.”

What makes the Rafale’s face so sturdy?

“Two things. We’ve designed a unique grille made up of angled tiles shaped like the Renault badge, which appear to move as you view them from different angles. That’s a great feature when you’re close. [And] when the car is driving towards you, the daylight-running lights stand out. You first see the shapes and angles of the Renault badge, and there’s nothing like them. That feature will go on all our cars.”

How about inside?

“There’s plenty: the use of sustainable materials, the new instrument graphics, the superb new seats. We even use slate as a trim material. [Plus] the solar roof that darkens progressively at the touch of a switch and the special rear armrest that offers new things, such as device holders and power sources, for rear passengers.”

Set to go the brand new X3 line-up till the introduction of a successor to right this moment’s 503bhp straight-six-engined X3 M Competition subsequent yr, it additionally receives an digital rear M differential as commonplace, giving it excellent traction.

BMW hasn’t seen match to offer the X3 with air suspension or twin-valve dampers, like these discovered on some rivals. However, it has reworked the present X3’s double-wishbone entrance and multi-link rear steel-spring association, giving the brand new automotive a 23mm wider entrance observe, extra inflexible mounting factors for the entrance anti-roll bar and added strengthening to the rear axle mounting factors. Passive dampers are commonplace, however as with right this moment’s X3, consumers will have the ability to go for adaptive dampers.

The steering forgoes the dual-pinion design of right this moment’s X3 for a brand new belt-driven set-up. Additionally, the M50 will get additional engine-bay strut bracing to stiffen up its entrance finish and larger entrance wheel camber. Wheel and tyres sizes will vary from 18in to 21in.

The adjustments present the X3 with extra achieved dynamic qualities. There’s a extra exact really feel and extra fixed weighting to the steering, improved physique management, with larger resistance and extra progressive build-up to roll upon turn-in, and, most noticeably of all, added wheel management and larger general composure to the trip, with impression harshness significantly having being tremendously lowered together with the adaptive dampers. It’s definitely extra rounded and succesful than earlier than – and within the case of the M50, which comes with its personal uniquely tuned sports activities suspension, extra participating and involving too.

In 100% electrical fashions, you see an engine-free and as an alternative motor-reliant system inside your automobile. This will usually be an electrical battery pack (or a number of) towards the again of the automobile, adopted by a front-end motor or motors.

In a plug-in hybrid, you see a gasoline tank and battery pack alongside one another, feeding into the engine/motor they correspond to. The battery pack in a PHEV is smaller than an EV however bigger and stronger than a typical hybrid. That’s as a result of it is going to journey on electrical energy just for ~30 miles. That stated, there are many PHEV models that don’t skimp out on performance.

If you are in a BEV, you see nearer to 200, 300, or 400+ miles per cost, ZERO gasoline getting used, or CO2 being emitted whilst you’re in movement.

The battery dimension and capability in an EV are bigger than a hybrid or PHEV by a protracted shot. You could have upwards of 300 miles of vary in an electrical automobile, whereas a plug-in hybrid will normally see below 50 miles. The bigger the battery, the extra miles PER cost you possibly can journey.

First drive: 2024 Toyota C-HR

The PHEV variant of the Toyota C-HR features new twin-piston brakes and ZF frequency-sensitive shock absorbers. These shock absorbers can adjust their firmness to improve the ride over high-frequency bumps and reduce body roll in other situations.

In addition, there is a new powertrain option available for the 2024 Toyota C-HR. Alongside the existing 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter hybrid systems, there is now a 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid system. The plug-in hybrid system is based on Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid technology and consists of a 150bhp four-cylinder 2.0-liter petrol engine, a new 161bhp electric motor, and a larger 13.8kWh battery.

The plug-in hybrid version of the Toyota C-HR has an official electric-only range of 41 miles, although during the test drive, it achieved a range closer to 30 miles. Like most plug-in hybrid vehicles, it offers the option to operate in electric-only mode or use its hybrid capabilities. The hybrid mode can optimize power usage based on the sat-nav system and employ geofencing to prioritize electric power in clean-air zones. Additionally, drivers can adjust the regenerative braking strength, even enabling a B mode that allows for more efficient one-pedal driving.

The recent improvements to the Toyota C-HR’s ride quality are noticeable in different driving environments. Whether driving through tight urban areas or on fast, flowing roads, the vehicle remains comfortable, well-balanced, and composed over bumpy surfaces. While the C-HR is not particularly dynamic (due to its nature as a crossover), it still provides a pleasant driving experience that can put a smile on your face.

The performance of the plug-in hybrid powertrain is well-tuned. The transition between the two power sources is seamless, and the vehicle exhibits instant acceleration in electric mode. The petrol engine also delivers good response with smooth pickup and acceleration, responding well to driver inputs.

Unfortunately, the sound produced by the powertrain does not match its performance. It lacks excitement and occasionally sounds rough. However, it is an improvement over the regular hybrid powertrain’s noise characteristics.

It is worth noting that the plug-in hybrid version of the Toyota C-HR does not offer significantly higher top speed or acceleration compared to the regular hybrid model. Therefore, choosing the plug-in hybrid option may depend on factors such as price and potential tax benefits, especially for company car drivers who can benefit from the 8% benefit-in-kind tax bracket due to the 41-mile electric range.

First drive: Review of the Volkswagen Passat prototype

Volkswagen is working on two new petrol-electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrains for the Passat prototype. These drivetrains use a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor mounted on the gearbox. The output varies between 201bhp and 268bhp. The battery size will also increase, around 26kWh, giving the car an electric range of 80 miles. Furthermore, the PHEVs will have faster AC and DC charging capabilities.

To start the car, you simply press the start button and place the gear controller in the ‘D’ position.

The interior of the new Passat has been updated, with a new interface and menu structure for the infotainment system. This makes the car easy to operate, and the quality of the interior has also improved.

The turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine provides good acceleration and performance, with flexible power delivery in the low to mid-range. The engine feels refined and smooth.

The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox reacts quickly, giving the car a pleasingly long-legged feel at higher speeds. However, it may hesitate to downshift for more acceleration.

The steering is accurate and well-weighted, with better feedback than before. The suspension changes have improved the handling, adding agility and better body control. The new Passat is sharper and more enjoyable to drive compared to its predecessor. It is easy to handle and maneuver on the road, but it is not a sporty or athletic car.

The new Passat benefits from twin-valve dampers, which improve absorption and rebound properties. This results in a smoother ride, even on rough roads.

Although still in development, the first drive of the new Passat shows that it is already a better car than its popular predecessor. The changes made to the estate version ensure that it maintains the practicality and qualities that buyers expect and demand.
