RC Big Rigs In Small Scale Look Like A Fun Way To Work Hard, Cost Thousands

Radio-controlled vehicles offer a downsized version of the automotive experience. They come in a range of prices, with some models being more complex and feature-rich than others. The RC rigs showcased in the video above go beyond mere replicas of dump trucks, excavators, semis, and other big rigs by incorporating intricate details.

The level of detail in some of these machines is remarkable. Many of them include functioning lights to enhance their realism, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Some vehicles even have illuminated dashboards and center screens, while their engine and reverse sounds mimic the actual noise produced by hard-working electric motors. In fact, some clips in the video sound like an actual construction site.

However, such detailed RC rigs come at a cost, with most models ranging well over $1,000. For example, the five-axle low-loader semi-trailer featured at 6:40 in the video retails for €5,512 ($6,004 at today’s exchange rates). This trailer is equipped with a front-end storage box, sunken lashing and anchorage eyes, fold-out chassis extensions, as well as complete wiring with rear lights and side markers.

Not everything in the video is as expensive though. The JDM-198 RTR loader shown at 5:25 is relatively cheaper, retailing for $2,241. The 1/14-scale articulated dump truck, available at 8:55 in the video, costs $2,052 on ToucanHobby.com. The Kabolite Liebhe 350 excavator featured at 3:30 falls in the middle range with a price tag of $3,456, while the LESU Lieghe loader, seen at 5:43, is an investment of $2,884 on the hobby website. However, it’s worth noting that the latter model comes unassembled and unpainted.

These hard-working RC rigs demonstrate the diverse range of car culture. Although they may not be the supercars that grace posters and magazine covers, they are equally awe-inspiring as functional machines. These scaled-down vehicles, even in 1/14-scale, are capable of performing tasks just like their real-world counterparts. The video showcases the excavators digging dirt and loading it into dump trucks that drive away, mirroring real-life construction scenarios.

While purchasing toys like these may not be feasible for everyone due to their high price point, there are always cheaper alternatives available. These alternatives may not have the same level of detail but still offer an enjoyable radio-controlled experience. The RC market caters to various budgets and extends beyond models, with options like RC engines and transmissions that celebrate the engineering found in modern automobiles.

Toyota Research Institute Unveils New Generative AI Technique for Vehicle Design

New Technique Gives Designers Added Capabilities by Incorporating Engineering Constraints Into Generative AI Models

LOS ALTOS, Calif. (June 20, 2023) – Toyota Research Institute (TRI) today unveiled a generative artificial intelligence (AI) technique to amplify vehicle designers. Currently, designers can leverage publicly available text-to-image generative AI tools as an early step in their creative process. With TRI’s new technique, designers can add initial design sketches and engineering constraints into this process, cutting down the iterations needed to reconcile design and engineering considerations.

“Generative AI tools are often used as inspiration for designers, but cannot handle the complex engineering and safety considerations that go into actual car design,” said Avinash Balachandran, director of TRI’s Human Interactive Driving (HID) Division, whose team worked on the technology. “This technique combines Toyota’s traditional engineering strengths with the state-of-the-art capabilities of modern generative AI.”

TRI researchers released two papers describing how the technique incorporates precise engineering constraints into the design process. Constraints like drag (which affects fuel efficiency) and chassis dimensions like ride height and cabin dimensions (which affect handling, ergonomics, and safety) can now be implicitly incorporated into the generative AI process. The team tied principles from optimization theory, used extensively for computer-aided engineering, to text-to-image-based generative AI. The resulting algorithm allows the designer to optimize engineering constraints while maintaining their text-based stylistic prompts to the generative AI process.

The new generative AI technique optimizes aerodynamic drag in successive iterations based on parameter inputs from the designer.

As an example, a designer can request, via text prompt, a suite of designs based on an initial prototype sketch with specific stylistic properties like “sleek,” “SUV-like,” and “modern” while also optimizing a quantitative performance metric. In the research paper, the team focused specifically on aerodynamic drag. The approach can also optimize any other performance metrics or constraints inferred from a design image.

“TRI is harnessing the creative power of AI to amplify automobile designers and engineers,” said Charlene Wu, senior director of TRI’s Human-Centered AI (HCAI) Division, whose team collaborated with the Human Interactive Driving team on this project.

By incorporating engineering constraints directly into the design process, this tool could also help Toyota design electrified vehicles more quickly and efficiently.

“Reducing drag is critical for improving the aerodynamics of BEVs to maximize their range,” said Takero Kato, BEV factory president, Toyota Motor Corporation.

Lamborghini’s Financial Success Allows Development of Huracan Successor Without Audi R8 Twin

In order to mitigate financial risks associated with investing in a niche product, Lamborghini previously collaborated with Audi to share costs. The Gallardo and Huracan were developed alongside the first- and second-generation R8 models. However, Audi has confirmed that there will not be a third collaboration. Despite this, Lamborghini, based in Sant’Agata Bolognese, has announced that a new Lamborghini model will be introduced in 2024. A top executive, Francesco Scardaoni, who serves as the director for the Asia-Pacific region, explains how this is made possible.

Scardaoni reveals that the upcoming Huracan replacement will be developed solely by Lamborghini, thanks to the company’s years of profitability. A major contributing factor to Lamborghini’s success is the immense popularity of its Urus SUV, which some enthusiasts may view as a necessary compromise. In 2022, Lamborghini achieved its best year ever with a turnover of €2.38 billion and an operating margin of 25.9 percent. It recorded an operating income of €614 million and recorded a record-breaking 9,233 unit deliveries, with 5,367 units being the Urus.

This Is How Long It Takes To Fully Charge Up The Tata Tiago EV

We plugged the Tiago EV into a DC fast charging station and recorded the charging time in real-world conditions

Tata Tiago EV Real World Charging Test

The Tata Tiago EV was launched last year in September and at the time, the electric hatchback was the most affordable electric car in the country, bested only by the MG Comet EV which came along in May. It comes with two battery options – 19.2kWh and 24kWh – with a claimed range of up to 250km and 315km respectively, and supports both AC and DC charging options. Recently, we had the bigger battery pack version of the Tiago EV with us and so we just had to check how much time it takes to be charged from 10 to 100 percent using a DC fast charger.

Charging Time

Tata Tiago EV Charging At 10 Percent

The charging times in the real world can vary based upon factors such as vehicle condition, ambient temperatures and flow rate from the chargers. To see how fast it can be charged, we took the Tiago EV to a 120kW DC fast charging station. However, it is worth noting that during the entire charging process, the maximum rate of charge the Tiago EV could take was 18kW.

Key Takeaways

Tata Tiago EV Charging At 50 Percent

  • Once the Tiago EV was plugged in, its battery was replenished by five percent every four minutes.

  • The Tiago EV kept charging at 18kW till its battery indicated 85 percent, and from there on it started to decline.

  • The charging rate fell to 13kW and it took an extra minute for the next 5 percent of charge.

  • At 90 percent, the charging rate dropped to 7kW and the car took seven minutes to reach 95 percent.

  • From 95 percent onwards, the charging rate started to drop quickly all the way down to 2kW. With this rate of charge, it took 26 minutes for the car to reach its full charging capacity.

  • In our tests, the charging time from 10 to 80 percent came out as 57 minutes, which is almost the same as the 58-minute claimed time from the carmaker.

  • From 80 to 100 percent, the car took another 42 minutes.

Why This Drop In Charging Speed?

Tata Tiago EV Charging At 99 Percent

Every carmaker gives its customer just the 10 to 80 percent charging time as that is the optimal battery charging bracket. As per our tests, it is evident that the last 20 percent takes a lot of time because the rate of charging starts to drop after 80 percent. The reason for this is that while using a DC fast charger, the battery pack starts to heat up, which is bad for the battery’s health. Slowing the charging speed keeps it from overheating and prevents any damage.

Powertrain

Tata Tiago EV Electric Motor

The Tata Tiago EV gets two battery pack options: 19.2kW and 24kW. Both are paired with an electric motor that churns out 61PS/110Nm with the smaller battery and 75PS/114Nm with the bigger one.

Price & Rivals

Tata Tiago EV

Tata has priced the Tiago EV between Rs 8.69 lakh to Rs 12.04 lakh (ex-showroom). The entry-level EV goes head to head with the Citroen eC3 and MG Comet EV. Stay tuned to find out how much range the Tiago EV delivers in our extensive real world testing.
