Honda Unveils Its New Naked Liter Bike: The CB1000 Hornet Bares All At EICMA 2023

Honda has officially introduced the CB1000 Hornet, a liter-class streetfighter based on the CBR1000RR platform and sporting a sharp design with familiar looks.

The new model’s design appears to draw some inspiration from Kawasaki’s Z1000 and Ducati’s Streetfighter V4, departing from the CB1000R’s Neo Sports Cafe design to adopt the sharpness and pointiness of modern-day Honda Hornets.

2024 Honda CB1000 Hornet

The headlight features a split design, similar to the current Fireblade in Honda’s lineup, with dual LED headlights fitted into a sharp front housing. The short tank of the Hornet is angular and angled forward, giving it a muscular and aggressive look when viewed head-on.

The rear of the bike also embraces an aggressive look, tapering off to a sharp point with flatter sections that give it an aerodynamic and futuristic appearance, signaling Honda’s focus on forward-thinking and modern design with its Hornets.

Honda has stated in its launch video that the new big-bore Hornet takes styling cues from the CB750 Hornet, building it on the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade platform, including the steel frame and the Pro-Link rear suspension system.

2024 Honda CB1000 Hornet

The bike is equipped with an inverted Showa Separate Function Fork-Big Piston (SFF-BP) with a tube diameter of 41 millimeters and a rear mono-shock that is manually adjustable for pre-load and rebound, ensuring a proper setup.

The electronics package includes throttle-by-wire system, three riding modes, a five-inch color TFT display, and the Honda RoadSync pairing suite compatible with Android and iOS smartphones.

The 999cc inline-four cylinder engine delivers 150 horsepower and “over” 73.8 pound-feet of torque. While the exact power figures are not yet released, Honda has promised to provide them once the Hornet is released in the summer of 2024.

With the CB1000R’s sluggish sales, it will make way for the big Hornet, marking a new era for Honda in the heavyweight naked category with the Hornet leading the charge.

Jo Shimoda Signs with Factory Honda

Team Honda HRC announced today that Jo Shimoda will join their factory squad and race a CRF250R during the 2024 and ’25 seasons. Alongside teammates Jett Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, and Chance Hymas, the Japanese native will compete for Honda.

Shimoda, who hails from Suzuka, Japan, started riding dirt bikes at the age of 4. After achieving success as an amateur racer in Japan, he sought tougher competition internationally. Shimoda raced in Europe, occasionally competing against Jett Lawrence, and also in the U.S. At the age of 14, he won the 2016 Supermini 2 AMA Amateur National Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch. In 2020, his first full year as a professional, he finished third in the AMA 250SX East Region, earning him the AMA Supercross Rookie of the Year Award. Following the closure of the Factory Connection team, Shimoda signed with Pro Circuit Kawasaki and went on to win an AMA 250SX main event in 2021, becoming the first Japanese rider to achieve this feat. He also became the first Japanese rider to secure an AMA Pro Motocross overall win in 2022. In his career, Shimoda has accumulated three 250 overall wins in AMA Pro Motocross, one 250 Regional win in AMA Supercross, and one 250 win in SuperMotocross.

Expressing his excitement about joining Honda’s factory team, Shimoda said, “I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress since my time with Factory Connection, and I hope to take the next step in my career by winning an AMA championship. I’ve been friends with the Lawrence brothers since our time together at Factory Connection, and they’ve proven that the bikes are capable of winning at the highest level. We’ve already begun testing for 2024, and I can’t wait for the season to get underway.”

Shimoda is the first Japanese rider to sign a factory contract with American Honda, although Honda has previously supported top Japanese racers in MotoGP, World Trials, and even Formula 1.

“We’re extremely delighted to welcome Jo back to the Honda family,” said Brandon Wilson, Manager of Racing and Experiential Marketing at American Honda. “Losing him ahead of the 2021 season was unfortunate, so this reunion feels special. Shimoda has made remarkable progress in recent years and has firmly established himself as one of the top 250 class riders. While the signing of any rider is exciting news, this one holds particular significance to our management and many of our associates due to the Japanese connection. Jo has set his sights on bigger goals, and we are excited to support him in achieving them.”

Jo Shimoda

The 2024 Honda Hydrogen Fuel-Cell CR-V Has A Plug-In Battery, Too

Honda is still pursuing its hydrogen ambitions, and a fuel-cell CR-V is set to be released in 2024. Camouflaged prototypes of the vehicle have been spotted in both Japan and the US, where it will be available for purchase.

Although the term “camouflage” is used loosely in this context, as evidenced by the bright blue body wrap on the SUV found in Japan. The vehicle, which is approximately the size of a CR-V, features a different front design with large corner vents and a split grille. The word “Honda” is prominently displayed on the vehicle, leaving no doubt about its identity.

The back of the vehicle also differs slightly, notably due to the absence of exhaust outlets. This indicates that it is a fuel-cell vehicle, as emphasized by the word “hydrogen” prominently displayed on the body wrap. Automakers that make things easy to recognize are appreciated.

In the US, an X user named Oscar spotted a test vehicle in California. Unfortunately, the images are not as clear or close-up, as the SUV is covered in swirl camouflage. However, the same split grille front fascia is still visible. Considering that the current-generation CR-V was introduced for the 2023 model year, it is unlikely that this is a mid-cycle refresh.

It’s important to note that although we refer to it as the CR-V for now, that may not be its final name. When Honda announced the development of this fuel-cell SUV, they made it clear that it is based on the CR-V. Now that we’ve seen prototypes in public, it is evident that it closely resembles the popular people mover. Its profile and size align with the CR-V as well. Perhaps it will be called the Honda CR-V Clarity? Only time will tell.

Honda To Introduce Updates for the X-ADV in 2024

Honda is set to update its popular big scooter, the X-ADV 750, for the 2024 model year with some minor revisions.

Earlier this year, we reported on Team Red’s update for the X-ADV 750. While Honda has already introduced new colors for this 750cc-class adventure scooter, there are more changes in store for the 2024 model.

One significant change is the relocation of the headlight, which will give the X-ADV a new look. The front fascia of the scooter will be revised with a lower-mounted light cluster, adding a slightly different form to the adventure scooter.

Furthermore, the new headlight design will feature three lights, including standard low and high beams and cornering lights that adjust based on the scooter’s lean angle. The 2024 X-ADV will also retain its Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) feature.

Moving to the rear of the 2024 X-ADV, Honda will introduce a new exhaust design that resembles the SCL500. This new configuration is expected to improve cornering clearance and enhance passenger comfort by redirecting exhaust gases away from the rear seat.

To address heat concerns near the rear seat caused by the close positioning of the exhaust, Honda will incorporate significant heat insulation in that area, similar to the SCL500.

Aside from these updates, there are no changes planned for the X-ADV’s engine. The bike will still feature the same 745cc 270-degree parallel twin engine found in the current model, delivering 58.6 horsepower and 50 foot-pounds of torque. The X-ADV will also continue to offer ride modes for customizable performance.

The model updates for the X-ADV are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2024, along with a new range of colors that will refresh the lineup.
