The E30 M3 Sounds Best as a Tarmac Rally Car

The E30-generation BMW M3 is most well-known for its Touring automotive racing success. But it makes for an equally wonderful rally automotive, as this video proves. Though the automotive won’t have as many outright wins because it has in DTM, you’ll be able to’t deny the excellence of its soundtrack.

The Speed Infinity YouTube channel reduce collectively a handful of clips exhibiting precisely what the M3 does finest: Get sideways whereas spinning close to and at redline someplace in japanese Europe (probably Lithuania, judging by a few of the license plates). All of those M3s have been transformed to full-on rally automobiles, full with full cages and what seems like free-flowing intakes for his or her high-strung S14 four-cylinder motors.

Short gearing and fearless drivers means we are able to hear these automobiles lengthy earlier than they seem on digital camera, flying by every cog and not using a trace of hesitation, regardless of the slippery surfaces, blind corners, and lack of runoff. No, these M3s aren’t practically as fast as trendy WRC automobiles, however these drivers are dedicated. This is precisely what rally is all about.

This sort of flat-out driving is much more commendable when you search for costs for first-generation M3s. They’ve turn out to be full-on collector automobiles, which means a crash in certainly one of these might be extraordinarily expensive if the chassis wants changing. So to the folks nonetheless racing E30 M3s, we salute you.

Watch Rally Icon Michèle Mouton Revisit Her Win on the 1982 Acropolis Rally

The first victory for the legendary Audi Quattro rally automotive got here on the Sanremo Rally in 1981, courtesy of Michèle Mouton. One of essentially the most profitable rally drivers of all time, Mouton was just lately a visitor on the DirtFish rally colleges YouTube channel to debate one in every of her most iconic victories on the Acropolis Rally in 1982. Normally we’re not a fan of reactlord movies, however when Michèle Mouton is the one offering the commentary on one in every of her achievements, it is a completely different story.

Mouton’s victory got here early within the lifetime of the Audi Quattro, which might go on to be some of the profitable rally vehicles of all time. By 1985 it had developed into the legendary S1 E2, essentially the most iconic iteration of the car.

The French rally driver remembers so much in regards to the varied phases and the drivers who participated, particularly one very embarrassing half: Mouton’s dad and mom got here to look at the rally on the sidelines, and on the very nook the place they have been standing, she spun. According to her, they will even be seen within the video trying on.

She does not say a lot in regards to the automotive itself, however clearly, the Audi was dominant. Mouton got here second within the 1982 championship behind solely Walter Rohrl, who was not solely likewise driving an Audi Quattro however is taken into account by many to be the best rally driver ever.

The video is certainly price a watch simply to get Mouton’s perspective. She’s extraordinarily humble, noting she knew nothing about motorsport earlier than she began driving. In her thoughts, most individuals can get into it, together with different younger ladies. If she will be able to do it, she says, anybody can.

2024 KOVE RALLY ADVENTURE BIKE

What, you would possibly ask, is a rally bike? Good query. At this level, no two solutions are precisely the identical. Honda, KTM, Triumph and different producers use the time period freely for wildly numerous fashions. For now, we like Kove’s definition finest. The bike you see here’s a machine you could possibly enter within the Dakar Rally and, with just a little luck and $100,000 for assist, possibly even attain the end. This is greater than a dual-sport bike forged within the picture of a rally racer; it’s a motorbike made with that function in thoughts. Two of them completed Dakar in 2023, and Mason Klein is on one for the 2024 version of the occasion.

The Kove Rally has a prompt retail worth of $8999. There’s a decrease seat peak model for a similar worth and a contest mannequin for $13,999.

THE KOVE CONNECTION

Mason Klein’s Kove is, in fact, a factory-level works bike. But, at its core, it’s a manufacturing bike made in China. According to FIM guidelines, a rally bike should have a single-cylinder motor with a displacement restrict of 450cc. For sensible functions, it needs to be an actual dust bike that’s able to going very far and really quick. It appears odd to us that nobody else is providing a motorcycle like this. KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas solely make restricted runs of semi-factory bikes that promote for about $35,000. Honda’s Dakar bikes are full works bikes, and so are the Hero Dakar bikes.

Suspension was one of many bike’s robust factors. The parts are made by Yu-An.

What actually makes the Kove Rally particular is the value. It has a prompt retail worth of $8,999. The Kove Rally is made in China, however it clearly has a really robust western affect. The motor is a double-overhead-cam, four-valve 450 with a 6-speed gearbox. The backside finish was from an earlier mannequin, however all the things from the bottom gasket up was developed for this bike. The gas system is fairly wild. There are three tanks with a mixed capability of seven.4 gallons. It all feeds robotically to the left entrance tank, so there aren’t any fuel-management points. The bike has a small frame-mount fairing, a down-swept exhaust, an enormous carbon fiber skid plate and instrumentation that features a small pill behind the windscreen. It has full lighting and gear for avenue use. Currently, the Kove meets Euro 5 emissions necessities and is present process the method for approval within the U.S. For now, it falls into that grey space the place it may be licensed in some states however not the extra uptight ones (e.g., California). It even has anti-lock brakes, which will be disabled. The suspension comes from an organization referred to as Yu-An, the brakes are Taisko and the tires are CST. The parts don’t appear like typical Chinese components. All are properly completed, compact and completely fashionable.

the Kove motor is it’s personal design; not a knock off or copy of the rest. The filter is mounted excessive like a Yamaha or early Husaberg.

GO FAR, GO FAST

Despite how properly completed the Kove is, we had been pretty cynical getting in. We anticipated it to be damaged inside just a few days and even hours. Carson Brown got here down for our first few days of testing, and he can normally break a motorcycle at will. He tried. Nothing broke. Beyond that, he actually loved it! The suspension, specifically, exceeded all expectations. Carson was hitting logs and leaping off rocks as if it had been a 125. Admittedly, most of that’s due to who he’s. The bike is slim and properly proportioned, however it isn’t mild. On our scale, it’s 334 kilos with out gas. We don’t know the way heavy Ricky Brabec’s works Honda is, however we do know that in case you put all this rally stuff on a Honda CRF450RL dual-sport bike, you’d find yourself with the identical primary weight. Regardless of that, we rode it all over the place we’d take an everyday dual-sport. In tight, rocky canyons, it felt massive however not unmanageable. And, on the different finish of the spectrum, it was excellent. When the Kove is at pace on a fireplace street or two-track, it’s completely steady, enjoyable and comfy.

Carson Brown bought a kick out of using the Kove Rally.

The motor is first rate, however nothing to get enthusiastic about. Remember, this mannequin has full-emission gear and a super-quiet exhaust. It feels pretty plugged up. It makes first rate energy within the center however doesn’t rev very far; KTM and Husky dual-sport bikes aren’t significantly better. The motor nonetheless has very clear EFI mapping with no lifeless spots and little or no popping. It has various peculiar traits, similar to little or no engine braking. We discovered to love it. We even took the bike round Glen Helen’s National monitor, the place it was superb, simply not quick.

THE REAL DEAL

Riding the Kove on a motocross course was principally to fulfill our personal curiosity. We know that nobody goes to purchase a 450 Rally for motocross or for Dakar or something like that. What it’s actually for is lengthy dual-sport adventures. This is a motorcycle that may very well be the muse for a cross-country dream experience. There are various assets designed to assist dual-sport/journey riders take lengthy rides which are principally off-road. RideBDR.com is probably the most refined. It gives routes in 13 areas with monitor logs and providers all organized. TransAmTrail.com has maps that may get you from West Virginia to Utah utilizing a predominately off-road path, and GPSKevinAdventureRides.com has components of each. The one factor all of them have in widespread is that they’re confined by fuel-range limitations. It’s laborious to get greater than 200 miles out of most bikes. With 7.4 gallons, which we measured, the Kove can do twice that. Filling all three tanks provides 45 kilos, adjustments the burden bias and alters the dealing with traits of the bike in bizarre methods, in order that’s a final resort. You can simply use the entrance two tanks and nonetheless get 250 miles of vary. Many riders, we’re informed, truly disconnect the rear tank from the gas system and use it for water storage. You should make that decision when the bike is new, earlier than you ever put a drop of gasoline in that rear tank.

the standard model does not have a legitimate
The commonplace mannequin doesn’t have a official rally tower for holding your street guide, however the usual TFT show will sync along with your smartphone to supply navigation.

Regardless of how a lot gas you have got on board, the bike is comfy and clean for the lengthy haul. The wheels are properly balanced, there’s little or no vibration and wind safety is first rate. Even the seat is comfy while you’re planted semi-motionless for hours, crossing state traces. On the freeway, you’ll discover that the bike is simply a 450. It has energy typical of a dual-sport bike, however it suffers by comparability to massive journey bikes which have 100 horsepower able to go. Is that the competitors for the Kove? In fact, we don’t know. This bike exists in a one-bike class. If you’re the long-distance dual-sport sort of man, the one actual comparability is a closely modified dual-sport bike, and even that gained’t provide the vary of the Kove—and it’ll value hundreds extra.

There’s extra to unpack right here. Kove is a really formidable firm with massive plans for different fashions. There is a full-dirt mannequin referred to as the Rally Pro, which does away with all of the restrictions and makes about 10 horsepower extra. There’s additionally a 50-state-legal model coming quickly. For now, the truth that the Kove Rally exists in any respect is the most important information. We really feel it units a brand new excessive mark for Chinese bikes.

Here’s What Rally Looked Like Right After Group B Ended

Many take into account Group B the golden age of stage rally. With fire-breathing 500-plus-horsepower machines and crowds that might match a Formula 1 weekend, we perceive how somebody might champion the period because the end-all be-all of the game. But rally did not finish when Group B was canceled in 1986. Instead, it birthed the subsequent era of iconic metallic.

With Group B outlawed, Group A turned the premier race class for stage rally within the World Rally Championship in 1987. With limits on issues like energy, weight, and value, Group A rally automobiles have been far nearer to their road-going counterparts than the outgoing Group B machines, which have been basically full-on race automobiles with highway automobile our bodies.

This 30-minute spotlight reel of the 1987 Rallye Sanremo provides a superb have a look at what rally had remodeled into the 12 months following Group B rally. The automobiles have been narrower, slower, and fewer extravagant, sure, however the crowds have been equally huge. Rally was simply as well-liked because it had ever been.

Group A would create among the most legendary homologation automobiles in existence, from Ford Cosworths, to Toyota Celica GT-Fours, to legends just like the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. And not like Group B, which lasted simply 4 years, Group A laws have been utilized by the WRC all the way in which till 2018. So so far as ruleset affect goes, Group B’s successor was much more essential within the grand scheme of stage rally historical past.

  • The Subaru WRX is a defining mannequin for Subaru and has a powerful connection to its rally program.

In one other departure from earlier WRX fashions, the 2022 instance featured swathes of plastic physique cladding. RICKY BRABEC & HIS HRC RALLY BIKE UP CLOSE: THE WRAP

Ten years in the past, Honda received again into rally racing with a secret undertaking referred to as the Honda CRF450 Rally. It began off as a closely modified CRF450X, however quickly had a DOHC motor and a chassis that was not like something within the Honda line-up of the time. Everyone assumed it was the forerunner for a future manufacturing bike. Everyone was fallacious. Honda by no means had any intention of providing the Rally on the market. It was designed and constructed by Honda Racing Corporation for one function solely: to win the Dakar Rally. Eventually it did, but it surely took years of attempting.

Skip ahead to 2024: the Monster Energy HRC Honda Rally Team gained for the third time in 5 years. This time, it was on an all-new model of the CRF450 Rally. “It was time,” says Johnny Campbell. “Two years ago KTM and Husqvarna had a new bike, so it was time to take everything we learned and start over.”
According to Ricky Brabec, the method of getting the brand new bike into race-shape wasn’t simple. “The hardest part this year was building a new motorcycle,” he says. “The new bike, the new chassis, the triangle, everything is a little different, so the way you ride is going to be different.
“It’s taken a lot of work to get it to where we’re happy with it. It’s a little bit smaller and lighter and I’m a bigger guy so it took some adjustment. In the sand dunes it’s easier to ride–it’s more of a moto-style bike. It floats in the sand better than the old bike. In the rocks, I still have mixed feelings about how the two bikes compare. We spent six months trying to make the bike work somewhat okay. Once we got it to a point where we thought it was okay, we said we’re going to go race [this] bike. Now, here we are after the Dakar, we have a whole year to go back and try to make it a little better. But how do we make something better that just won? So it’s really difficult; the suspension and modifications can be endless. You can go way too far, then reel it back in and change something else. So I’m looking forward to see what we can do with the new chassis. As of right now it’s only got one race on it.”

Honda continues to be pretty tight-lipped with info on the Gen 2 Rally bike. Johnny introduced it to our photograph studio within the week following the 2024 Dakar Rally, however our directions have been clear: no pictures of inside elements, no removing of physique elements, no disassembly. “The motor isn’t that different from the previous one,” he stated. That didn’t inform us a lot, as a result of we had by no means seen the earlier one–it was at all times obscured by the large gas tanks. We knew solely that it had two overhead cams relatively than the Unicam design that Honda used for the manufacturing motocrosser, and that the gearbox had six speeds.

“All that stuff is the same. It’s a wet sump motor with no external oil tank and an overall layout that isn’t too unusual. You can tell from the outside that the generator is pretty large, and internally, it’s completely different from the production 450, mostly for durability. The gears are polished and there are a lot of machined, handmade parts. The oil system is pretty robust.”

The first time that Ricky Brabec and the U.S. arm of the Monster Energy HRC rally group received to experience the bike was in July of 2023. From there, Ricky and his new teammate Skyler Howes labored on refinement. The suspension was the first topic of many of the testing. “But the seat is really important, too,” factors out Johnny. That is smart while you’re coping with a 5000-mile race.
There are sure parts that might be acquainted to any desert racer. Under all of the rally tools there’s an old-school Scott’s steering damper. You would assume that Honda’s engineering division wouldn’t stand for such previous expertise. “They can’t come up with anything better. They tried.” The rider additionally has an on-the-fly map change with two choices. “They have maps for everything. If the stage is really long, it can be one made for durability that keeps the engine cooler. If it’s a sprint, it might be for power.” At this yr’s Dakar, there was one stage that pressed the restrict of the bike’s gas vary. “We knew going in that it would be tight,” recollects Johnny. “The first refueling point was at 200 kilometers. Ricky had to estimate his fuel burn at that point and adjust his riding style to make the second leg, which was 219 kilometers. He did a good job. His teammate Pablo Quintanilla ran out of fuel.”

Ricky Brabec (9) and Adrien Van Beveren

RACE DEBUT

You definitely can’t argue with the outcomes. Of the 14 days that made up the 2024 Dakar Rally, the brand new CRF450 Rally was one of the best finisher 9 instances. Ricky gained stage 10, however for probably the most half he managed his race brilliantly, staying simply shut sufficient to the entrance to keep away from the dreaded activity of opening the route for others to comply with. “Ricky reached another level of maturity this year,” displays Johnny. “He was really determined to prove that his win in 2020 wasn’t luck. There was no question that he was the best rider.”
Ricky says the bike is just one piece of a really advanced puzzle. “Rally is totally totally different from something you’d have stateside. It’s a number of days, however you’re at all times attempting to place your self for the subsequent day near your competitors. That method you’ve got much less time to lose towards your competitors. It’s roughly like a chess sport. If you go to race Baja, the 1000 is one stage, 24 hours straight. Dakar is 12 phases, however we sleep at evening. Each day may be totally different. One day may be sand dunes, however you don’t wish to open the monitor. Then in the future may very well be stuffed with rocks and in the future may very well be simple. So now it’s a must to choose the way you wish to place your self for these three days. Obviously you wish to win, so on a quick day with no navigation, you can begin in entrance. But you don’t wish to begin in entrance in sand dunes since you’re going to lose quarter-hour. So it’s all a sport. You must have info for the subsequent three days or two days to place your self for the third day. But you possibly can have all of the technique on the earth, and you’ll have a nasty day, your technique goes out the window, so that you want a plan. The stress of realizing that you just’re anticipated to win is heavy and if you happen to make one mistake, even when it’s a small mistake you are feeling just like the world is crumbling round you. We’re solely human and we make errors so we simply attempt to do our greatest daily.

Skyler Howes

“It does assist having extra Americans on the group, particularly with Skyler Howes residing so shut. In earlier years we lived shut, however we by no means skilled collectively, as a result of that’s competitors with a distinct producer. We type of cut up methods. Now we’re on the identical group, so I believe the coaching is simply going to get elevated. The Japanese know we dwell pretty shut so I believe they’re going to help our program. Johnny Campbell, Skyler and I all dwell equal distances, so it’s simple to get a central assembly level for all of us. I believe it’s actually superior, I by no means had an American teammate. I imply I like my teammates, however they don’t dwell down the road. I additionally really feel just like the engineers will pay attention extra intently as a result of there are three of us all saying the identical factor.

MORE STRATEGY

“Team orders are a thing,” says Ricky. “But this year we were all so close on time, that there were no team orders. They said you guys were all within reach of winning, so you can go at it. So then it’s up to you. Johnny and I will bounce back and forth on strategy. Plan A is the perfect rally, but we’re also balancing out plans B and C. There’s strategy with the team when you have a rider like Pablo Quintanilla, who lost an hour and a half on stage six, so we use him as strategy. We can say we need him to push tomorrow so he can win, and open the next stage so that I can follow him. But if we’re all close, there’s no strategy.”

THE HARDEST PART

Despite all of the technique and the fatigue, the testing and the preparation, the toughest half about Dakar stays the human issue. The early moorings on the liaison are powerful,” Ricky says. “You just think about being home, a warm bed. You think ‘Oh, man, a steak sounds nice, I wonder what my friends are doing … it’s really cold.’ Once the racing starts, that all goes out the window. One day we started at 4:30 and our stage started at 10:00 a.m. So we had 5 hours on the highway just falling asleep. When the stage starts you have the road book and tunnel vision. Honestly I think the liaisons take a lot out of you.”

That’s all for now! See you subsequent week.

SHERCO WINS RALLY 2 DIVISION AT 2024 DAKAR RALLY

The Sherco TVS Team has received the Rally 2 division on the 2024 Dakar Rally. Indian rider Harith Noah completed as excessive as fifth on a person stage this 12 months and ended up eleventh within the total classification.

The ultimate stage of the Dakar was a comparatively brief day for the riders. The race concluded on the fringe of the Red Sea, the place the end of the particular was situated. This final particular didn’t provide any main problem, however it will probably nonetheless show to be decisive. A timer was triggered over 174 kilometers round Yanbu no matter occurs, represents a menace to the one within the lead. Harith Noah gained momentum throughout these 2 weeks, committing only a few errors. He took care of his 450 SEF Rally and restricted risk-taking. He was usually near the highest 10, he rode with consistency and adopted the group’s technique, he managed to earn the general victory in Rally 2 and completed eleventh within the basic classification.

Harith Noah

Harith Noah: “I’m here and very happy to have finished. It’s great to have won the Rally 2 category but I wasn’t sure until the end. I had no expectations when I arrived, I wanted to just ride my bike without really looking at the results. I started to be very surprised by my position during stage 10, when I did the 5th best time of the special. I don’t really know what happened during that week, I felt good and the bike ran perfectly. I hope that my victory will convince many young people to join the rally. I didn’t imagine when I was a child that I would come to the Dakar, that I would first finish 20th, and now 11th.”

RICKY BRABEC WINS THE 2024 DAKAR RALLY!

Ricky Brabec has received the 2024 Dakar Rally. He ran a strategically flawless race all through the 14 days and 12 phases to protect an 11-minute lead over Ross Branch. His solely stage win got here two days in the past, and that was adopted by a superb stage 11, the place he began in entrance and completed in entrance. On that stage, Ross Branch had the perfect adjusted time, which meant that Ricky solely needed to comply with Ross right this moment. Kevin Benavides had the quickest time on the ultimate day for his third stage win this yr. In the top, the rostrum was Brabec, Branch, Adrien Van Beveren and Benavides.

Ricky Brabec: “This time was a little bit different. I feel like this one was more earned. This time was a lot tougher. In 2020, we had a big gap from the get-go. Here, I think me and Ross spent three days with a couple of seconds difference. It was a tight race for all of us. I think between first and third there are eleven minutes or something, whatever Adrien got, but it’s been a tight race and ten minutes is not a big gap here on the rally. It’s been tight. I had two good days, two opportunities to make a good push, but also stage 11 was a scare factor for me because I knew Ross was starting behind me, 18 minutes behind, and if he caught me it would be over. Stage 11 was hard for me, but I stayed focused, got to the finishing line and didn’t lose too much time, so I’m really happy with this and I’m really happy for the team. I’m happy for all of us, we did an excellent job all of the two weeks. I think number 9 will be my lucky number from now on.”

Hero Motorsport’s Ross Branch

Ross Branch: “Finally finished the Dakar!! It was a really tough Dakar 2024, and I’m so thrilled to be here! Finishing on the podium was always the goal, and today it’s a dream come true. I’m really over the moon to achieve this goal for Hero. And a big thank you to the team for developing a highly competitive machine, for the sleepless 3 weeks here, and for everything they’ve sacrificed to reach to this point. I’m really proud of my team. We’ve got some more work to do to be on the next step, so we’ll look forward to that in the next year. A big thank you to everyone for your continued support from all around the world!”

Kyle McCoy

Kyle McCoy: “That feeling!!! Finished the final stage today (which even then they didn’t let up on difficulty). I had an amazing journey and proud to be the 3rd American to finish Malle moto class for the Dakar Rally in the 44 year history. We started with 30 in our class of “Original by Motul” (Ironman), 20 completed and I got here in tenth (proper the place I belong mid-pack). But for me it was principally about getting down to end what I began final yr. This race is extremely tough, and the fellas on this group of 30 are extremely powerful and are available from all corners of the globe. They all have my utmost respect. I had some excessive highs and lows. Day 7 within the dunes when my mechanical concern practically introduced me to an finish was 30 min of my life I’ll always remember. I’m not naturally something approaching a mechanic however I’ve gained confidence in my talents all through the race. I lined virtually 5,000 miles and spent 18 days sleeping in a tent within the desert. There are a lifetime value of recollections on every particular person day. It’s tough to course of. This race requires excessive focus. It’s my type of meditation. I like the way it brings the world collectively. I spent probably the most time with my good buddy @dakar_stu and his band of South Africans welcomed me every single day. The machine I rode (KTM 450 Rally Factory Replica) is among the many most superb creations on planet earth I’m satisfied. There are 85 goal constructed for this occasion annually. If I had one car to decide on for the world’s most excessive terrain this is able to be it. I do know it inside out now. And she took nice care of me. Most vital of all I’m grateful @mccoy.kc places up with all my nonsense and understands me greater than anybody else. I feel I’ll go dwelling now and return to my desk jockey life. Thanks to everybody for the superb assist and messages.”

Jacob Argubright

Jacob Argubright: “A tough final stage of the 2024 Dakar for me. Busted the front fuel pump connector, leaked out all my gas from my front tanks then ran out using only my rear tank. I found some gas but I killed my trying to get it going so took a bit to get it bump started. I did finish the stage thoough, so that’s a plus. Definitely not how I wanted my second Dakar to go but that’s how it goes sometimes just need to learn from it on move forward. Regardless of how things went I still cherish the experience and am grateful for everyone’s help to get me here and love the sport of rally.”

2024 DAKAR RALLY, STAGE 11

Ricky Brabec took an enormous step towards successful his second Dakar Rally as we speak. He completed in second place, 32 seconds behind Ross Branch, his chief rival for the general victory tomorrow. He opened the path all day, which often places a rider in danger for navigation errors and big time losses, significantly on an extended, tough stage reminiscent of as we speak’s. Brabec stayed on monitor, although, and captured 5 min 45 secs in time bonuses. Overall, the hole between Brabec and Branch stays at over 10 minutes. Adrian Van Beveren is in third, some 14 minutes behind. Brabec will begin behind Branch on the ultimate stage tomorrow, permitting the American rider to comply with slightly than lead.

Stage 11 was a 420 km lengthy stretch by canyons and dry rivers, taking the opponents from AlUla to the ultimate bivouac in Yanbu. The terrain was principally rugged, with rocks and stones lining up your complete size of the particular. On the ultimate day of Dakar 2024, the race will take the opponents on a shorter 175 km lengthy particular, devoid of main difficulties.

Ross Branch: “It was a really cool stage today. I had a lot of fun right from the start until the finish. I really enjoyed myself out there – the bike was going amazing, and I made no mistakes today – which is quite important to stay calm in the race. The leader of the race has a significant lead over me, but I’m really happy with where I am at the moment, and I’m looking forward to the last day tomorrow.”

Ricky Brabec

Ricky Brabec: “It’s close. I opened the whole day by myself and I was expecting my team-mate Nacho to catch me, but unfortunately he had a little issue. Then I was waiting for my team-mate Adrien for him to grab some bonus time. I know Ross is pushing hard today and I don’t know what the results are so far from the stage, but I have a feeling that it’s going to be me, Adrien and Ross as the top 3 tomorrow. We’ll see what happens, but there’s still one stage to go. I would say it was my best ride of the rally. On the last 100 km, I went really slowly just to get here and wait for my team-mate, but I made no mistakes today. I put my head down and I got to the finish. The first goal on the Dakar is always to make it to the rest day. Obviously, you have to make it day by day, so the first goal is essentially to make it day by day, but after you make it through the first day, you say I want to make it through the second day and then you want to make it to the rest day. Once you make it to the rest day your next goal is to make it to the finish. If you finish the Dakar, that’s a win. It’s gnarly, the Dakar’s not easy, especially for the bikes because we’re up at three in the morning and we’re riding all morning, we’re riding all day and we’re getting back to the bivouac late. But finishing the Dakar is a win in my book and if you can win the Dakar it’s legendary. We’ll go back to the bivouac, we’ll talk to the team and we’ll push on for tomorrow.”

Jacob Argubright

Jacob Argubright: “Stage 11 was a fun one with lots of rocks and tough terrain. Pretty smooth day finishing P14 but with another penalty putting me back to P21. Guess it’s year of the penalty and mishaps for me but all great learning experiences. I’m healthy and ready for the final stage tomorrow!”
