Honda is still pursuing its hydrogen ambitions, and a fuel-cell CR-V is set to be released in 2024. Camouflaged prototypes of the vehicle have been spotted in both Japan and the US, where it will be available for purchase.

Although the term “camouflage” is used loosely in this context, as evidenced by the bright blue body wrap on the SUV found in Japan. The vehicle, which is approximately the size of a CR-V, features a different front design with large corner vents and a split grille. The word “Honda” is prominently displayed on the vehicle, leaving no doubt about its identity.

The back of the vehicle also differs slightly, notably due to the absence of exhaust outlets. This indicates that it is a fuel-cell vehicle, as emphasized by the word “hydrogen” prominently displayed on the body wrap. Automakers that make things easy to recognize are appreciated.

In the US, an X user named Oscar spotted a test vehicle in California. Unfortunately, the images are not as clear or close-up, as the SUV is covered in swirl camouflage. However, the same split grille front fascia is still visible. Considering that the current-generation CR-V was introduced for the 2023 model year, it is unlikely that this is a mid-cycle refresh.

It’s important to note that although we refer to it as the CR-V for now, that may not be its final name. When Honda announced the development of this fuel-cell SUV, they made it clear that it is based on the CR-V. Now that we’ve seen prototypes in public, it is evident that it closely resembles the popular people mover. Its profile and size align with the CR-V as well. Perhaps it will be called the Honda CR-V Clarity? Only time will tell.
