In an era dominated by the latest sporty marvels, the 2023 Lexus RC F stands out, not by constantly reinventing itself, but by upholding its captivating heritage. Proudly boasting a 472-horsepower V-8 engine, this Lexus doesn’t merely conform—it defines.

Its journey began with a memorable reveal at the Detroit Auto Show in 2014. And while many vehicles pivoted to meet evolving emission standards, the RC F persevered, ensuring its signature 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8 remained part of the story. This engine doesn’t just deliver power—it serenades drivers with an evocative melody that’s almost addictive.

Inside, Lexus has elegantly merged plush comfort with modern tech. The long-anticipated touchscreen infotainment is a testament to this commitment, making interactions seamless and intuitive. The special Fuji Speedway Edition, draped in the elusive “Incognito” shade and enhanced with innovative Hitachi shocks, showcases the brand’s flair for unique offerings.

True, the RC F isn’t striving to be the ultimate sports car. It champions a grand touring ethos, combining luxury with just the right dash of zest. While European counterparts like the BMW M4 may beckon, and the Chevrolet Corvette tempts with American muscle, the RC F has carved out its own distinct path. It’s time to explore what makes this coupe truly unmatched in a crowded arena.

A V-8 Maestro In A Turbocharged Orchestra

2023 Lexus RC F
Lexus

At the heart of the 2023 Lexus RC F lies an unapologetic, 5.0-liter V-8 engine, a testament to the brand’s dedication to raw power and authenticity. With a roaring 472 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque, it’s the soulful symphony in a world increasingly dominated by turbocharged tempos.

Historically, when the RC F was initially tested in 2014, it flaunted a 0-60 mph sprint in a commendable 4.6 seconds. Flash forward to 2020, after subtle power augmentations and shedding some weight, it managed the same in an impressive 4.1 seconds to 60 mph. The Fuji Speedway Edition shaved off another tenth, boasting a swift 4.0-second timing. And while these numbers are commendable, they don’t necessarily reign supreme in the high-performance coupe category.

In 2019, the RC F underwent significant revisions. The enhancements weren’t just cosmetic; the introduction of launch control, an optional carbon-fiber body, and the formidable Track Edition were just the tip of the iceberg. Dive deeper, and you’d find upgrades like hollow half-shafts, lightweight aluminum components, fortified engine mounts, and the adoption of more robust steering rack mounts.

However, where the RC F truly differentiates itself is in its genuine commitment to the driving experience. Configurable drive-mode settings ensure tailored performance. Its handling is refined, evoking confidence for daily drives without trying too hard to mimic the aggressive demeanor that its aesthetics might suggest.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, the 2023 RC F clocks in at 16/24 mpg city/highway. Though slightly trailing behind competitors like the BMW M4, it’s essential to understand the context: the RC F offers an authentic V-8 experience without resorting to the modern trend of downsizing and turbocharging.

A Symphony Of Tech, Safety, And Trust

2023 Lexus RC F
Lexus

The allure of the 2023 Lexus RC F is more than skin deep. Delving into its robust features and infotainment system, it’s evident that the creators had both thrill-seekers and safety enthusiasts in mind. Like an overture signaling the start of a grand orchestra, the Lexus RC F begins with a symphonic array of features. The Track Edition fine-tunes this performance, introducing cosmetic enhancements that complement the standard suite.

Step inside, and you’re greeted with an ensemble of comforts, from keyless entry to selectable driving modes. The driver’s seat is not just a seat but a conductor’s podium, fitted with ten-way power adjustability and memory settings. Dual-zone climate control ensures every passenger feels the crescendo of comfort.

Moving on to the infotainment suite, think of it as the orchestra’s woodwind section – versatile and adaptive. Both models boast an eight-inch high-resolution display, but for those craving more, a 10.3-inch screen awaits, harmonizing seamlessly with Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Lexus has orchestrated a ten-speaker sound system as a baseline, but the opus of a 17-speaker Mark Levinson setup is a boon for audiophiles.

Safety in the RC F is the string section of our orchestra – steadfast, foundational, and reassuring. While the NHTSA and IIHS haven’t reviewed this specific model, its cousin, the standard RC, has showcased its symphony of safety, striking a “Good” chord across all crashworthiness tests.

Lastly, let’s not forget the rhythm section, representing the reliability of the RC F. Backed by Lexus’s reputation and an encore of warranty options (four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty), it keeps the beat steady and trustworthy. While there have been minor recalls in past renditions, the 2023 model promises a performance that should stand the test of time.

A Tale Of Value Beyond Sticker Shock

2023 Lexus RC F
Lexus

There’s an interesting ebb and flow in the world of luxury cars, and the 2023 Lexus RC F embodies this perfectly. At an entry price of $68,195, this model promises a delightful blend of luxury and athleticism. For those desiring to elevate the experience, the aerodynamically nuanced Track Edition stands ready, albeit at a premium price of $101,070.

However, this isn’t just about upfront costs. The RC F’s past reveals a story of undulating market appeal. Flashback to its debut, and sales graphs showed hesitation, perhaps swayed by the European bigwigs. Yet, the real kicker? Today, an RC F from yesteryears still fetches a remarkable $45,000-$55,000, hinting at a legacy that’s more than just horsepower and metal. If you’re gearing up for a purchase, be ready for potential totals of around $79,300 once you’ve jazzed it up with premium options.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Vs. Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is here, debuting at the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum in Salt Lake City, Utah. The new LC, known internally as the 250-Series, borrows some of its hard bits from the Lexus GX and Toyota Tacoma, but with a starting price in the mid-$50,000 range, it’ll go toe to toe with the likes of the Land Rover Defender 110, Jeep Wrangler, and Ford Bronco. So how does it stack up against that excellent competitive set?

We’re pitting the 250-Series up against the base-model Land Rover Defender S 110, a nicely equipped Ford Bronco Badlands four-door, and a Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe four-door, all of which can be had for about the same price as the Land Cruiser’s estimated $55k base. As is usually the case, the Land Cruiser is better in some specifications and worse in others. And of course, we’ll have to wait and see how the 250-Series performs in the real world before we can truly name a winner in this newly revitalized off-road SUV segment. But one thing’s for sure, the Bronco, Wrangler, and Defender have some new competition.

HUSQVARNA TX300 PROJECT BY DICKS RACING: 2-STROKE TUESDAY

The Husqvarna TX300 Heritage project with Dick’s Racing for 2023 aimed to pay homage to Husqvarna’s history while incorporating the latest technological advancements in their 2-stroke off-road competition bikes. Dick Wilk, a seasoned desert racer turned tuner and suspension specialist, collaborated with us on this project, using his expertise to build machines that impress us.

Dick dedicated significant effort to enhancing the suspension. The air fork received his Hybrid AER kit, which includes new valving and a spring setup. The goal was to improve versatility, provide a smoother ride, and achieve better fore-to-aft balance. As for the shock, modifications were made to enhance tractability, improve performance in rough terrain, and offer versatility for both desert racing and woods riding.

For off-road riding, a Seat Concepts Comfort saddle was chosen to enhance comfort, provide better traction, and reduce discomfort. The comfort shape maintains a similar contour to the stock seat at the front, ensuring the rider’s legs are not spread too far apart. However, it tapers towards the mid-point to distribute the rider’s weight over a larger area. The seat cover features four traction ribs and is called the Element.

Dick’s TX300 is equipped with Flexx bars and a Scotts steering damper, complemented by a BRP handlebar mount system.

Custom gold/black wheels were installed along with Dunlop MX33 tires, a Primary drive chain, and sprockets.

Dicks Racing has been continuously improving the AER forks since they were introduced in 2017. For this project, they utilized a Hybrid system that incorporates a new cartridge accepting a spring while still employing the AER cartridge at a significantly reduced pressure (from 140 to 55). The wheels were fitted with black hubs, gold rims, Dunlop tires, and Nitromousse foam inserts.

Wilk considers it the best stock engine for a 300cc bike that he has worked on. The engine underwent a complete disassembly, inspection, and measurements but was left unmodified. This is quite impressive coming from someone who enjoys enhancing engine performance!

The only engine performance modification made was the addition of a Scalvini cone pipe and silencer. Dick’s Racing invested time in developing the suspension, as the new frame required new settings to achieve the desired results. The previous setup was too harsh in rocky conditions and too soft in whoops and G-outs.

From the archive: on this day in 1937

The LEVC TX of modern London has a heritage stretching back to 1930, spanning over six generations of taxi.

In 1925, a new Tory government imposed tariffs on commercial vehicles to cover war costs. This made the expensive French Unic taxis unaffordable, leading Mann & Overton, a dealer, to ask Austin to create a new model.

Austin decided to reuse the chassis of their old “heavy” Twelve car. They kept the 27bhp four-cylinder engine but made adjustments to the gearbox and steering for a tighter turning radius.

Coachbuilders provided the bodies, usually landaulet style, which had extra height compared to other taxis. This earned them the nickname “high lot” and made them popular among top-hat wearers.

According to the 1906 Conditions of Fitness, one side of the taxi was open, which was unpleasant on wet and windy days. It had a squeezer horn and an external carburettor killer for security. The upright driving position offered excellent visibility, and combined with great maneuverability, it allowed the driver to confidently navigate seemingly impossible spaces.

The performance of the taxi was sufficient for city traffic, although attempting higher speeds, such as at Brooklands, proved to be “amusing.” The taxi’s weight of around 1420kg gave it a stable feel while driving, but the constant vibration from the metalwork countered the comfort of the leather-lined seating area.

It’s remarkable how little has changed in the past 86 years, yet also how much has.

Lancia’s Aprilia masterpiece

Lancia’s Augusta gained popularity in the UK in 1933, so there was anticipation for its successor, the Aprilia. This pillarless saloon achieved a new aerodynamic record with a coefficient of drag of 0.47Cd. Despite its humble 45bhp from the 1.4-litre V4 engine, it had a remarkably low weight of 890kg due to its unitary body construction (a concept developed by Lancia in 1922), resulting in brisk performance. The engine was so smooth and refined that it felt like a six-cylinder.

The Aprilia boasted fully independent suspension, a rarity at the time, providing exceptional riding comfort and a reassuringly safe handling experience. It was the final car designed by Vincenzo Lancia – truly a remarkable vehicle.

UK government fails to deliver on road-building promise

In 1935, with the effects of the 1931 European banking crisis fading and the number of cars in Britain reaching 2.5 million, the government decided to embark on a significant road-building plan. The Ministry of Transport announced a £100 million fund for this purpose.

However, by 1937, when an additional 500 vehicles were joining the traffic every day, there was very little noticeable progress. It was revealed that only £6.45 million had been spent in the first two years. We observed that the majority of funds were being allocated to national armament, which, in hindsight, turned out to be a good thing…

2024 Toyota Supra And GR86 Honor MkIV, Initial D With New Special Editions

The Toyota GR86 and GR Supra are two sports cars with a long history. The Supra nameplate has been around since the 1980s, and the iconic fourth generation from the mid-90s is especially beloved by enthusiasts. The GR86 owes its existence to the Sprinter/Corolla AE86, even though the two cars don’t technically share a name. Now, both cars are getting special edition packages for 2024 that pay homage to their heritage.

The Supra’s 45th Anniversary Edition trim celebrates the nameplate as a whole, but also specifically references the MkIV Supra with certain unique features. The Mikan Blast paint job, which translates to orange in Japanese (referring to the fruit, not the color), is a subtle nod to the MkIV. It’s similar to the Plasma Orange Edition released overseas, and although Toyota hasn’t confirmed it, the designers likely took inspiration from Paul Walker’s Supra in The Fast And The Furious.

2024 Toyota Supra 45th Anniversary Edition

In addition to the orange paint, the Supra 45th Anniversary Edition also features black 19-inch wheels, a black graphics package along the door panels, and a gloss black adjustable rear wing. The rear wing is another subtle reference to the MkIV Supra, even though it’s smaller in size compared to the original.

The 45th Anniversary Edition package is available for the Supra 3.0 Premium grade, with either the eight-speed automatic or the six-speed manual transmission. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine remains unchanged, delivering 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque.

The Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition pays tribute to the original Sprinter Trueno – also known as the AE86 – which gained fame through its appearance in the anime Initial D. The GR86 Trueno Edition features a black-and-white, two-tone look reminiscent of the original, along with new 18-inch wheels, “Trueno” badges on the front and rear bumpers, and a matte black graphics package on the door panels and hood.

2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition

Unlike the Supra, the GR86 Trueno Edition also receives some performance upgrades. The Performance Pack, which debuts for 2024, includes upgraded Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes. This pack comes standard on the Trueno Edition, but owners of 2022 and 2023 GR86 models can also retrofit the option onto their cars.

For added safety, the 2024 GR86 with a manual transmission comes equipped with the new Active Safety Suite, which includes features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and high-beam headlight assist.

Both the Supra 45th Anniversary Edition and the GR86 Trueno Edition will be produced in limited quantities. Toyota plans to build just 900 examples of the Supra, with half in Mikan Orange and the other half in Absolute Zero white. There will be even fewer GR86 Trueno Editions, with only 860 examples available. These special edition sports cars are set to be released in winter, but pricing details have not been announced yet.
