Tata Punch EV Spotted Testing Again, But With A Clever Disguise Detail

While you can see a tailpipe below the bumper, this camouflaged Punch has its exhaust baked into the bumper

Tata Punch EV Spied

  • Punch EV to get mild design updates over the regular model, likely similar styling to Nexon EV.

  • Tata claims it will get a driving range of over 500km, official powertrain details pending.

  • Features could include a bigger touchscreen infotainment system, a digital driver’s display, up to 6 airbags and a rear parking camera.

  • Can be launched this year at an expected starting price of Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Tata Punch EV has been under development for quite some time and while we wait for its arrival, the camouflaged test mule continues to be spied on the roads. In the latest spy shots, the side and rear profile of the Punch EV were spotted clearly, giving us hints of its design and misguiding us at the same time. Have a look at the spy shots yourself.

Is It The Punch EV?

Tata Punch EV Rear

Yes, while there is a tailpipe below the bumper, it most likely has been stuck on to make us think it’s the ICE (internal combustion engine) Tata Punch. There are two reasons for us to believe that this is the electric version. First, the Punch EV has been spotted previously with rear wheel disc brakes, which can also be seen in these spy shots, and secondly, the current ICE Punch has its tailpipe design integrated into the rear bumper, not sticking out below it.

Tata Punch EV Side

The Punch EV will also get other design changes including fresh new alloy wheels, which look inspired from the ones we saw on the facelifted Tata Nexon EV. Based on the spy shots so far, the Punch EV could get a redesigned grille and updated air dams. The overall design of the micro SUV will be similar to its petrol counterpart, but Tata could add EV-specific blue elements all around, similar to the ones seen on the Tigor EV and Tiago EV.

Cabin & Features

Tata Punch EV

The cabin can also get a new theme to highlight its electric nature but the details of that are slim. However, from a previous spy shot, we know that its dashboard will house a bigger touchscreen infotainment system and Tata’s new two-spoke steering wheel with a backlit Tata logo.

The rest of the features could be a semi-digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, up to 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a rearview camera.

Battery Pack & Range

We previously believed that the Punch EV would get similar battery packs as the Tiago EV and Tiago EV, with a claimed range of between 300km to 350km. However, recently officials from Tata confirmed that the Punch EV will be sporting a claimed range of over 500km, which means that this small EV will house a bigger battery pack with more efficient motors for that extra distance.

Launch & Price

Can The Tata Punch EV Offer More Range Than The Tata Nexon EV?

The Tata Punch EV is expected to debut by the end of this year and arrive at an expected starting price of Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be a direct rival to the Citroen eC3 while serving as a premium alternative to the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.

Can The Tata Punch EV Offer More Range Than The Tata Nexon EV?

For it to become a reality, the Tata Punch EV will have to undergo a few powertrain updates, as we saw with the Nexon EV facelift

The Tata Punch, ever since it was conceptualised, was meant to get an all-electric version as well. It is based on the ALFA-ARC platform which is capable of electrification, and EVs based on this architecture were said to offer a claimed range of around 300-350km. However, fresh reports have surfaced online that suggest the all-electric Punch could offer a claimed range of over 500km, even more than the facelifted Tata Nexon EV Long Range that promises up to 465km from a full battery.

What Did Tata Motors Have To Say?

In a recent interview with The Hindu Businessline, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said, “You will start seeing higher range vehicles such as Punch ev, Harrier ev, and Curvv. The range of these vehicles will be 500-plus km so that customers need not worry about charging when they travel for long distances amid improving charging infrastructure on highways.”

He also said, “As the battery prices are coming down, Tata Motors seeks to take advantage of price reduction opportunity to increase the range in its EVs and also change the type of the vehicles from Generation 1 platform to Generation 2 platform. There will be a deeper focus on maximising utilisation of battery pack energy to accommodate more range.”

Details Of Upcoming Tata EVs

Tata EV Platforms Explained: Gen1 vs Gen2 vs Gen3

In 2022, Tata debuted Gen2 and Gen3 architectures for its upcoming range of EVs. While Gen1 platform referred to internal combustion engine (ICE) models going the all-electric route, Gen2 is more focussed on EV compatibility than their ICE versions compared to Gen1.

Factors That Could Change The Game

2023 Tata Nexon EV

There could be a variety of decisions that would push the Punch EV’s claimed range higher than originally expected. First and most important factor could be Tata’s decision to offer it with a substantially larger battery pack (similar to the larger Nexon EV), for a claimed range in the whereabouts of 500km.

Another factor that could play out in the Punch’s favour is its smaller dimensions, although it’s not exactly very aerodynamic in shape. Compared to the Nexon EV, the Punch EV might be lighter as well with the new-generation EV powertrains (includes electric motor, inverter and battery pack).

The other possible reasons for the increased range could be a bit more technical. Tata might either provide the Punch EV with a more efficient electric motor as was seen with the Nexon EV facelift, which increased range by more than 10km even though the battery capacity remained the same. It may sacrifice some performance in favour of range, which would make it a better city car.

Volvo C40 Recharge

The next possible factor could come down to improving the energy efficiency of the Punch EV’s battery pack with the latest battery chemistry for increased energy density, as Volvo did with the C40 Recharge to give its claimed range a jump of 112km over the XC40 Recharge upon which it is based.

When Does It Arrive?

We expect the carmaker to launch the Punch EV either before 2023 ends or in early 2024. Its prices are likely to start from Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom). Its only direct competitor will be the Citroen eC3, while it will serve as a premium option to the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.

Celebrating its second birthday, let’s recap all that has happened with the Tata Punch in the past year.

Price Increments

Tata also added a few new variants of the Punch in this time frame, contributing to the change in its prices.

Powertrain Upgrades – Now With CNG!

Tata Punch Engine

At launch, the Tata Punch only came with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which made 86PS and 115Nm. This engine came paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT.

Also Read: Watch: All The Changes For Tata Harrier And Tata Safari Facelifts Side By Side

It still gets the same engine but there’s been a bump in performance since the implementation of the BS6.2 emission norms, now rated at 88PS and 115Nm. The claimed fuel efficiency has improved a little as well.

Tata Punch CNG

Following its pre-production showcase at the Auto Expo in February 2023, the Tata Punch is now available in a CNG version as well. It arrived in August priced from Rs 7.10 lakh (ex-showroom), featuring a twin cylinder technology that allowed it to retain a usable amount of boot space unlike most CNG variants in the market.

This CNG powertrain comes with the same 1.2-litre petrol engine, has a lower output of 73.5PS and 103Nm, and is mated only to the 5-speed manual transmission. Tata claims a fuel efficiency of 26.99km/kg. The Punch CNG is offered in 3 broad variants – Pure, Adventure and Accomplished, priced from Rs 7.10 lakh to 9.68 lakh (ex-showroom).

Feature Rejig

Tata Punch Sunroof

The Punch got a few feature upgrades in its first year since launch, and it has got a few more in the last 12 months. Perhaps the most popular addition is the voice enabled sunroof, while a Type-C charging port and front armrest are also available now.

Tata Punch Cabin

Tata offered the Punch with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 7-inch semi-digital driver’s display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, cruise control, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

A New Foe Appears

Tata Punch vs Hyundai Exter

Since its launch to this year in July, the Tata Punch had no direct rival. But then, Hyundai launched the Exter, as the second offering in the micro-SUV space. Both SUVs have similar prices, sizes and boxy design languages, but are different in many ways. The Hyundai Exter, being a new offering, has a more modern appeal to it, and offers more premium features. However, the Punch still remains the one with a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating.

Sales Milestone!

Tata Punch 2 Lakh Milestone

After completing its 1 lakh units milestone in its first year of sale, the Tata Punch, before the completion of its 2 years, reached the production milestone of 2 lakh units. The Punch became one of the highest-selling cars in India, due to its SUV appeal and affordable price.

Even today, the Punch marks its place every month in the list of highest-selling cars in India, with 6-month average sales of 12,000 units.

Any Updates Coming?

Tata Tigor EV battery pack

Tata is currently working on the development of the Punch EV, which will sit between the Tigor EV and the Nexon EV. The electric version of the Punch has been spied multiple times and will likely offer two battery packs with a claimed range of up to 350km. It will come with EV-specific design changes similar to the ones seen on the electric version of the Tiago or Tigor. The Punch EV is due to arrive sometime in 2024 or sooner.

Tata can also update the Punch with a facelift which could offer a similar modern design language as the new Nexon facelift, but details about the updated micro-SUV are slim. However, with the popularity of this small SUV, we could see big updates in due time.

Tata Punch EV Spied Again, Revealing Fresh New Details

In the latest spy shots, the Punch EV seems to get the new 10.25-inch touchscreen, same as the Nexon

Tata Punch EV Spied

  • Punch EV is slated to be the next Tata electric offering.

  • Exterior spy shot suggests Nexon-like aerodynamic alloy wheels.

  • Cabin will most likely have a bigger touchscreen and Tata’s new two-spoke steering wheel.

  • Expected to get two battery pack options with a claimed range of up to 350km.

  • Tata could price it from Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.

The Tata Punch EV has been spotted once again in its testing phase, still under camouflage. The electric micro-SUV has been in the works for a while and its latest spy shots give new details of the exterior and interior design. Here is what’s been spotted:

New Alloy Wheels

Tata Punch EV Alloy Wheels

In the previous spy shots, the Punch EV was spotted with five-spoke alloy wheels, but here, the alloy wheel design seems to be inspired by the facelifted Tata Nexon EV. The Punch EV could get these aerodynamic alloys from its sibling for that “electric vehicle” look.

Also Read: Tata Tiago EV: First Year Recap

The rest of the design is similar to the ICE (internal combustion engine) version of the Punch. It already gets slim DRLs along the bonnet edge with large LED headlamps housed in the chunky bumper. Based on the spy shots so far, it appears to get an updated design for the grille and air dam and Tata could add some EV-specific blue design elements all around.

A Bigger Touchscreen

Tata Punch EV Cabin

Another possible addition is a bigger touchscreen infotainment system, which, from the spyshots, appears to be a 10.25-inch unit. Previous sightings confirmed that the Punch EV will also get the new two-spoke steering wheel with the backlit Tata logo.

Tata Punch Cabin

Other features could include a semi-digital driver’s display, up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESP), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a rearview camera.

Battery Pack & Range

Tata Tigor EV battery pack

Like the rest of Tata’s EV lineup, the Punch EV could also come with two battery pack options, with claimed ranges of around 300km and 350km. It will also most likely get multi-level regenerative braking. The Tata Punch EV will be positioned below the Nexon EV. There are no details of its electric motor yet, but it would most likely produce power in the range of 75PS to 100PS.

Price & Rivals

The Tata Punch EV could be launched before this year ends or in early 2024 at an expected starting price of Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be a direct rival to the Citroen eC3 while being a more premium alternative to the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.

Tata Punch EV Spotted Charging on Camera For The First Time

The Punch EV will be the first electric model based on a car underpinned by Tata’s ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture

Tata Punch EV

  • The Punch EV has been spied again, this time while it was being charged.

  • Unlike the Nexon EV, the Punch EV appears to have its charge port in the front.

  • Based on the previous spy shots, it is expected to feature a refreshed cabin layout and a new 2-spoke steering wheel.

  • Likely to get two battery pack options, offering a range of up to 350km.

  • Tata could launch it by the end of this year with a starting price of Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Tata Punch EV is the newest electric offering from the Indian carmaker, set to bridge the gap between the Tiago EV and Nexon EV. While the Punch EV has been spotted previously, photos from a newer sighting give us a closer look at the micro SUV’s front while it was being charged.

New Details Spied

For the very first time, the test mule of the Punch EV can be seen while plugged into a charger. Unlike the Nexon EV and Tiago EV, this one appears to have a charge port at the front and not where the fuel inlet would usually be.

Tata Punch EV

While the front of the Punch EV appears largely similar to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, it’s expected to showcase some EV-specific highlights on the grille and bumper, similar to what we’ve seen on existing Tata EVs.

When viewed from the side, the profile looks identical to the current Punch model. However, the test mule is equipped with different alloy wheels, similar to those seen on top spec versions of the Tata Tiago and Tigor.

Expected Features

Based on the earlier spy shots, the Punch EV will come with a refreshed dashboard design and a new 2-spoke steering wheel, similar to the one spied on the near-production version of the Tata Nexon facelift.

Tata Punch

In terms of features, it will be quite similar to the ICE model. This includes a touchscreen system, a semi-digital driver’s display and touch-based climate control panel. It could also get amenities like automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and cruise control. The safety kit on the Punch EV could include up to  six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, and a reversing camera.

What About Powertrain?

Tata Tigor EV battery pack

As seen with the existing Tata EVs, the Punch EV could also get two battery pack options, which would offer a claimed driving range of 300km to 350km. It is also expected to get multiple braking regeneration modes just like other Tata EVs. Positioned below the Nexon EV, the Punch EV will likely bridge the  performance gap, making around 100PS.

Also, the Punch EV will be the first electric model which will be underpinned by ALFA platform, unlike all other Tata EVs present in the market.

Expected Price And Rivals

The Punch EV is expected to be launched by the end of this year, and could have a starting price of Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be a direct rival to the Citroen eC3, and will be a premium alternative to the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.

5 Features Tata Punch Gets Over The Hyundai Exter

The Tata Punch may not have the richest equipment list now with the Hyundai Exter’s arrival, but it does still have an edge with some unique features

Tata Punch vs Hyundai Exter

With the Hyundai Exter, the carmaker raised the bar of “what-to-expect” from a micro SUV in terms of equipment, thanks to its plentiful segment-first features. However, its prime rival, the Tata Punch, still offers some unique features in its kitty as mentioned below.

Rain-sensing Wipers

Tata Punch rain-sensing wipers

Tata is still the only brand of the two to offer many of its compact offerings, including its micro SUV, with rain-sensing wipers (front). Only those buying the range-topping Creative trim of the Punch can avail of this premium feature.

16-inch Alloy Wheels

Tata Punch 16-inch alloy wheels

Another feature that’s common between the two SUVs is dual-tone alloy wheels. While Hyundai provides 15-inch units on the Exter, the Punch comes equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels. Like the rain-sensing wipers, 16-inch alloy wheels too, are limited to the top-spec variant.

Traction Control

Even though the Hyundai Exter gets a lot more modern safety equipment over the Punch, the latter is only one of the two to offer traction control, which is available on its AMT variants from the second-to-top Accomplished trim. Combined with it, it has traction control modes as well to raise its SUV-like appeal.

Rear Armrest

Tata Punch rear centre armrest

One of the comfort features that you probably will expect most of the modern cars priced around Rs 10 lakh to get is a rear centre armrest. Even though the Punch is the older model of the two, it has been given this comfort feature but only on the top-spec trim. There aren’t any cupholders on the armrest, though, which does reduce its practicality.

Front Fog Lamps

Tata Punch fog lamps

Traction control isn’t the only safety feature that the Punch gets over the Exter. Tata’s micro SUV even gets front fog lamps with cornering function that’s trickled down from a segment-above-SUV: the Nexon. This safety feature is provided from the Accomplished variant.

While the Punch has the above-mentioned equipment benefits over the Exter, the latter does have as many as seven distinguishing features. If it’s the looks of the two that’s making you indecisive about which SUV to pick, we have compared them in images to help you choose.

Tata has priced the Punch between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 9.52 lakh while the Exter retails from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10.10 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
