All three sedans have achieved a 5-star rating in both adult and child occupant protection. However, the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus have a slight advantage in terms of their bodyshell rating. The Hyundai Verna has matched the German sedans in terms of points in child occupant protection.

Hyundai Verna airbag

Only the Hyundai Verna comes with six airbags as standard. However, all three models have standard safety features such as 3-point seatbelts and electronic stability control (ESC).

Frontal Impact: The German sedans provided good protection to the head, neck, driver’s thighs, and co-passengers’ legs. The chest region of both front passengers received adequate protection.

The Verna also offered good protection to the driver and passenger’s head and neck. The driver’s chest received a “marginal” rating for protection, while the passenger’s chest received “good” protection. The driver and passenger’s knees showed “marginal” protection.

Volkswagen Virtus Global NCAP side impact

Side Impact, Side Pole Impact And ESC: In the Verna, the head, abdomen, and pelvis were rated as “good,” while the chest had “adequate” protection. The German rivals provided good protection to the pelvis area, while the head, chest, and abdomen areas had adequate protection.

CHILD OCCUPANT PROTECTION

The Verna scored 42 out of 49 points in terms of child occupant safety, matching the German sedans.

In the Hyundai sedan, the child seat for the 3-year-old provided full protection during the frontal impact. The child seat for the 1.5-year-old dummy also offered full head protection.

Skoda Slavia Global NCAP frontal offset

In the Slavia and Virtus, the 3-year-old and 18-month-old dummies were seated on rearward-facing ISOFIX seats, providing complete protection during frontal and side impacts.

Bodyshell Integrity

The last and most significant parameter in the GNCAP crash test is the bodyshell integrity. The Slavia and Virtus received a rating of “stable” and were capable of withstanding further loadings, while the new Verna’s bodyshell was deemed “unstable” in the front offset crash test.

Takeaway

While all three models perform well in the Global NCAP crash tests, the German models have a slight edge over the Hyundai Verna. This is due to slightly better points in adult occupant protection and the stability of their bodyshell. However, the Verna stands out for offering six airbags as standard and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in its higher variants. It is expected that more Hyundai cars will perform well in future crash test assessments, as the brand has made six airbags a standard offering across its Indian lineup.

These 5 Maruti Cars Are Most Likely To Get Their Bharat NCAP Safety Ratings The Earliest

Maruti Suzuki would be eager to get its first 5-star safety rating for an India-specification model

Maruti Bharat NCAP

India’s own crash test rating agency, the Bharat NCAP, is all set to roll out from October 2023. The agency has confirmed that it has already received over 30 applications for crash testing. Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Maruti Suzuki India, said when the programme was introduced, Maruti welcomes this initiative of the government and will offer at least three models for Bharat NCAP testing in the first lot itself.

Since he did not confirm what these three models are or will be, we have taken it upon ourselves to shortlist the most likely candidates from Maruti’s extensive lineup of 17 cars. Here are our top 5 picks:

Maruti Grand Vitara

Maruti Grand Vitara Review

The Grand Vitara is a strong contender for a good score from the Bharat NCAP. Among its rivals, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are some of the safest cars in India with five stars from the latest Global NCAP tests. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos have scored three stars. The Grand Vitara could establish itself as one of the strongest SUVs in this space by scoring well in the new BNCAP crash tests.

Its base variant comes equipped with dual front airbags, electronic stability program (ESP), hill hold assist, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. The top-end variants further get six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, a 360-degree camera, and hill descent control (only for AWD).

Maruti Jimny

Maruti Jimny

The three-door version of the Jimny has already been crash tested by the Euro NCAP, where it scored an average 3-star safety rating. We believe the five-door Maruti Jimny could also be a prime contender to get itself an early score from the Bharat NCAP, as it is also exported to markets like Australia and South Africa. Its prime rival, the Mahindra Thar, gets four stars as per the older Global NCAP tests. Moreover, with the five-door Thar arriving in 2024, the Jimny could have a competitive benefit by securing a strong safety rating.

Maruti’s off-road focused SUV comes with six airbags, a rear parking camera, hill hold and descent control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and electronic stability programme as standard.

Maruti Fronx

Maruti Fronx

Maruti Fronx is a hatchback-SUV crossover which rivals both premium hatchbacks as well as subcompact SUVs. Among its rivals, the Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, and Tata Altroz received a 5-star safety rating as per the older GNCAP tests, while the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger have been awarded four stars. Since it’s one of the latest Marutis to go on sale and has already been established as a popular choice, we’re expecting the Fronx to also be in consideration for being among the first to get crash tested by BNCAP.

While features like dual front airbags, ESP with hill hold assist, and rear parking sensors are standard, the higher-end variants get up to six airbags and a 360-degree camera.

Maruti Baleno

Maruti Baleno is among the best-selling cars in India and one of its rivals, the Tata Altroz, has already been tested by the old GNCAP protocols. It would boost the premium hatchback’s appeal even more. The previous version of the hatchback failed the Latin NCAP crash tests.

Its safety feature list is similar to the Fronx, with dual front airbags, ESP, hill hold assist, and rear parking sensors as standard. The higher-end variants add six airbags and a 360-degree camera.

Maruti Brezza

Maruti Brezza Side

The previous generation of the Brezza scored four stars in the older Global NCAP tests, making it the best-performing Maruti till date. It would help the Maruti SUV reclaim its segment-leader title if it could prove itself just as sturdy and safe with a fresh crash test rating from BNCAP.

Safety is covered by the presence of up to six airbags, hill hold assist, ESP, a 360-degree camera, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

The Bharat NCAP testing procedures are in line with the updated Global NCAP norms. The Maruti Swift, Alto K10, S-Presso, Wagon R, and Ignis have already been tested as per the new norms, where all of them performed poorly. Over the recent launches, Maruti has stated that it’s working on making cars safer and with these five cars, it could come at par with its rivals and improve Maruti’s image with regards to vehicle safety by design.

Could Honda Elevate Be The Next 5-Star Safety Rated SUV In India?

The Honda City is a 5-star safety rated sedan, so can the Elevate SUV achieve the same level of safety?

Honda Elevate

  • Honda has conducted internal crash tests on the Elevate SUV to meet global safety standards.

  • The tests included front offset, side, flat, and rear barrier, as well as side pole impact tests. The vehicle also underwent pedestrian protection testing.

  • The detailed crash test results will be available once the SUV is available for sale.

  • The Elevate SUV is equipped with six airbags, hill start assist, rear parking camera, ISOFIX, and ADAS for safety.

  • The expected starting price for the Elevate SUV is around Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).

Safety ratings are an important consideration for car buyers, especially in the premium segment. The Honda Elevate SUV has undergone rigorous internal crash testing, and is expected to receive a high safety rating from crash-testing agencies worldwide.

Understanding the Tests

Honda Elevate

The Honda Elevate SUV has been subjected to various crash tests, including front offset (including with a child dummy), side, flat and rear barrier, and side pole impact tests at speeds ranging from 32kmph to 64kmph. The SUV has performed well in these crash tests and has also passed the pedestrian protection test.

The vehicle is built on Honda’s ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, which enhances safety.

Could It Be the Next 5-Star Safety Rated SUV?

Honda Elevate

Based on the internal crash test results, it is anticipated that the new Honda SUV can achieve a 4- or 5-star safety rating. The actual rating will be determined by global NCAP tests or the upcoming Bharat NCAP.

It is worth noting that the fifth-generation Honda City received a full 5-star rating in the ASEAN NCAP crash tests. The Jazz and Amaze models also have a 4-star rating, indicating Honda’s commitment to producing safe cars. The Elevate SUV is expected to carry this tradition forward.

It also features ADAS (advanced driving assistance system) for active safety. The ADAS includes automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high-beam, all of which are radar-based safety technologies.

The Honda Elevate SUV is expected to be priced around Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom) and will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Volkswagen Taigun, Citroen C3 Aircross, Skoda Kushaq, and MG Astor. The SUV is scheduled for launch in early September, and bookings are already open.

Volkswagen Taigun Proves Itself Yet Again With 5 Stars In Latin NCAP Crash Tests

After its 5-star performance in Global NCAP last year, the compact SUV has done the same in the stricter Latin NCAP

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

The Volkswagen Taigun is the safest compact SUV in India right now with its 5-star Global NCAP safety rating. Following its impressive performance, it has just been crash tested in the more strict Latin NCAP, where it also scored a 5-star safety rating. Let’s see how it performed:

Safety Equipment

The Taigun that was crash tested was equipped with six airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard. The crash-tested unit also had optional autonomous emergency braking, which is not offered on the India-spec model. The made-in-India Taigun gets other safety features like ISOFIX child seat anchors, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a rearview camera.

Adult Occupant Protection

In adult occupant protection, the SUV scored 92 percent (39.99 points), which includes the overall scores of both frontal and side-impact tests. This test came with a 5-star adult occupant protection rating.

Frontal Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the frontal impact, the driver and passenger got ‘good’ protection on the head and neck. Chest protection was ‘good’ for the passenger and ‘marginal’ for the driver. Knee and tibia protection for both was ‘good’ and both of the driver’s feet also got ‘good’ protection.

Side Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the side impact test, the driver gets ‘good’ protection on the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis.

Side Pole Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

Just like in the side impact test, the driver gets ‘good’ protection on the head, abdomen and pelvis, but protection on the chest was ‘marginal.’

Child Occupant Protection

In child occupant protection, the Taigun got 92 percent (45 points). Here is how it performed:

Frontal Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the frontal impact test, the child seats for both the 3-year-old and 18-month-old were installed facing the rear. In both cases, they were able to prevent head exposure and offered ‘good’ protection. For the younger child, the seat provided full protection.

Side Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In this test, both the child restraint systems (CRS) offered full protection. The Taigun has ISOFIX anchorages as standard and also has all the necessary markings. All seats are also equipped with three-point seatbelts.

Pedestrian Protection

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

The Volkswagen SUV scored 55 percent (26.47 points) in this aspect. Here, in most parameters, the Taigun got ‘good’, ‘marginal’ and ‘adequate’ protection. While protection on the lower leg was ‘good’, the upper leg protection was ‘weak’, which might be the reason for its low score.

Safety Assist

The Latin NCAP also tests the safety assist features of a car and the Taigun scored 83 percent (35.81 points). The SUV comes with seatbelt reminders for all passengers and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard. Although the Taigun does not get a full suite of ADAS features, the crash-tested model had autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as optional, thus meeting Latin NCAPs requirements.

Taigun In India

The India-spec Volkswagen Taigun comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC) and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) as standard. Depending on the upcoming regulations, it could also be updated to offer six airbags as standard. It is currently priced between Rs 11.62 lakh and Rs 19.46 lakh (ex-showroom).
