Citroen C3 Aircross vs Rivals: Claimed Fuel Efficiency Compared

The C3 Aircross will only be offered with a manual transmission at launch

Citroen C3 Aircross Mileage

The Citroen C3 Aircross is approaching its market entry, possibly by October. It’s an extended version of the C3 and will be offered with both five- and seven-seater configurations. The compact SUV will be competing against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, MG Astor, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate.

Citroen has revealed the fuel efficiency of the only powertrain that will be offered with the C3 Aircross, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Here’s how it compares to the petrol-manual variants of its rivals:

Manual Variants

Mileage

Citroen C3 Aircross

18.5kmpl

Honda Elevate

15.31kmpl

Maruti Grand Vitara / Toyota Hyryder

21.1kmpl

Hyundai Creta

16.8kmpl

Kia Seltos

17kmpl/ 17.7kmpl (iMT with 1.5-litre turbo)

Skoda Kushaq

19.20kmpl/ 17.95kmpl (1.5-litre turbo)

Volkswagen Taigun

19.20kmpl/ 17.23kmpl (1.5-litre turbo)

  • The C3 Aircross’s 110PS turbo-petrol motor has a higher claimed fuel efficiency, more frugal than larger and naturally-aspirated (N.A.) 1.5-litre petrol engines found in the Elevate, Creta and Seltos.

  • The Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder also use a 1.5-litre N.A. petrol engine but with a lower output, do promise to be a lot more frugal than the upcoming Citroen SUV. They also get the choice of a strong-hybrid powertrain that claims up to 27.97kmpl.

Kia Seltos

  • Kia is the only one to offer the choice of a 6-speed iMT (manual without clutch pedal) for its 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, the most powerful in the segment.

  • Once we get the C3 Aircross for our extensive road testing, there will be a clear idea of how much it delivers in real-world driving conditions.

  • It will use the same 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine from the C3 hatchback.

  • The unit comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission only.

  • Comes with features like a 10-inch touchscreen unit and 7-inch digital driver’s display.

  • Expected to be priced from Rs 9 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.

The India-spec Citroen C3 Aircross was unveiled in April 2023, following which the French carmaker has also revealed its features and specifications. Now, Citroen has also announced the bookings, launch and delivery timelines for the compact SUV. The C3 Aircross will become available to customers for booking in September, while the deliveries are scheduled to start from October, likely right after the price announcement.

Let’s have a quick overview of what it will offer upon its launch.

A Basic Feature List

Citroen C3 Aircross

The list of amenities offered in the C3 Aircross is not as impressive as its rivals, covering just about the basic needs of the segment’s buyers. It includes a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, and steering-mounted audio controls.

In terms of safety, the C3 Aircross is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, hill-hold assist, rear parking sensors and tyre pressure pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The C3 Aircross lacks important features such as automatic AC, cruise control, ventilated seats, wireless charging, and up to six airbags, which are offered by its segment competitors.

Kia Seltos Facelift Is The Best Equipped New Compact SUV Of 2023

It outshines the other two new compact SUVs due to arrive this year – Honda Elevate and Citroen C3 Aircross

Kia Seltos vs Honda Elevate vs Citroen C3 Aircross

The compact SUV segment is currently the most popular automotive segment in India. With seven brands already competing, Honda and Citroen are set to enter the market in 2023 with new offerings. However, the recently launched facelifted Kia Seltos may have already stolen the spotlight from the upcoming Honda Elevate and Citroen C3 Aircross.

The Seltos has undergone its first major update since its launch four years ago and has once again set a new standard for features in the compact SUV segment. Here are 10 features that the Seltos offers over the Elevate and C3 Aircross, even though the Elevate is a premium offering:

Panoramic sunroof

Seltos panoramic sunroof

The Seltos now comes with a panoramic sunroof, a highly desired feature in the compact SUV segment. While the Elevate has a single-pane sunroof, the Citroen C3 Aircross does not offer a sunroof at all.

Digital instrument cluster

Seltos digital driver display

The Seltos comes with a connected display setup, including a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display. The Elevate has a semi-digital setup, while the C3 Aircross features a digitized instrument cluster.

Dual-zone climate control

Seltos dual zone AC

Kia is the first in the compact SUV segment to offer dual-zone climate control. This feature enhances the premium experience for the front passengers by allowing them to have different climate settings.

Multiple powertrain options

The Seltos is one of the few compact SUVs in the segment, along with the Hyundai Creta, to offer a diesel engine option. It also offers naturally-aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines. In comparison, the Elevate will only be available with a single petrol engine option, while the C3 Aircross will only have a turbo-petrol engine.

Kia Seltos engine

Multiple types of automatic transmissions and iMT

The Seltos offers a wide range of engines, each with its own choice of automatic transmission. The N.A. petrol unit has a CVT, the diesel has a 6-speed torque converter, and the turbo-petrol can be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. In comparison, the C3 Aircross will not have an automatic option at launch, while the Elevate will only have a CVT.

360-degree camera

Kia Seltos 360-degree camera

The Seltos has a 360-degree camera feature, which is not available in the Elevate and C3 Aircross. This feature is useful in crowded and tight spaces in the city.

Powered driver’s seat

The Seltos has an electronically adjustable driver’s seat, offering eight-way adjustments including recline, slide, height, and seat base angle. This feature adds to the premium feel of the car. The upcoming Honda and Citroen SUVs do not offer this feature.

Ventilated front seats

The Seltos has ventilated front seats, allowing users to adjust the fan speed for desired cooling. This feature is not available in the Elevate and C3 Aircross, making it a desirable comfort feature for India’s climate.

Bose sound system

The Seltos is equipped with a premium 8-speaker audio system from Bose, while the Honda and Citroen SUVs do not offer a branded audio setup.

Seltos bose audio

8-inch head-up display

The Seltos offers a head-up display, displaying basic vehicle information such as speed, fuel levels, and basic navigation directions. This feature is not available in the Elevate and C3 Aircross.

Added features come at added cost

The Kia Seltos facelift is priced between Rs 10.90 lakh and Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the pricier models in the segment due to its premium features. The Elevate and C3 Aircross, on the other hand, are expected to be more affordable, with prices starting at around Rs 12 lakh and Rs 9 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively. The Honda Elevate is scheduled to launch in September, while the Citroen SUV could arrive around the same time.

Three-Quarters of UK Drivers Believe British Roads Are Dangerous

  • A recent study conducted by Citroën reveals that 73% of UK drivers consider British roads to be dangerous for those who use them.
  • Between 2017 and 2021, the police in England and Wales recorded 1,114 accidents resulting in injuries caused by defective road surfaces, which led to the serious injury of 355 individuals and the death of 16††.
  • 42% of surveyed drivers were not aware that they could file a claim with the relevant local authority to compensate for vehicle damage caused by potholes.
  • 46% of drivers avoid certain roads due to the risk of pothole damage.
  • A previous study by Citroën UK found that the amount spent on compensation in the last year could have filled an additional 340,000 potholes*.

Exclusive research by Citroën UK reveals that nearly 75% of UK drivers believe that the condition of the country’s roads poses a danger to motorists and other road users.

According to Citroën UK’s latest survey, 75% of respondents reported that their cars had sustained damage from potholes, requiring vehicle repairs. However, drivers lack knowledge on how to seek support after experiencing pothole damage, as 42% of those affected stated that they were unaware of the possibility of claiming compensation from the relevant local authority. Only 14% of those surveyed said they had previously claimed compensation from their local authority.

This recent research follows Citroën’s findings in May, which revealed that the total cost of compensation claims paid out last year due to pothole damage amounted to £22.7 million, equivalent to the average cost of filling 340,000 potholes.

Citroën UK compared figures from the Asphalt Industry Alliance over the past six years and discovered that £139.9 million had been spent on damage compensation since 2017. This amount could have filled an additional 2.3 million potholes**.

In the new study, Citroën asked drivers about their perception of the condition of UK roads over the past six years. Notably, 68% of respondents felt that the roads in the UK had worsened, while only 15% believed that the condition had improved since 2017. Almost half of all drivers (46%) stated that they avoid certain roads entirely due to the fear and risk of damage.

The East Midlands was identified as the region where drivers expressed the most concern about road conditions, with 56% of respondents stating that the roads in their area had deteriorated. In contrast, only 18% of drivers in London reported a decline in road conditions in their local area.

Greg Taylor, Managing Director of Citroën UK, commented, “The people of the UK are clearly concerned about the state of our roads. The Citroën Advanced Comfort Programme helps alleviate the discomfort of driving on damaged road surfaces and reduces the impact of hitting potholes for drivers. However, it is evident that more work needs to be done to improve road conditions nationwide and restore public confidence.”

Many Citroën models, such as the New C5 X, benefit from the Advanced Comfort® Programme, which includes enhanced suspension and supportive seating for a smoother ride. All versions of the New C5 X feature Citroën’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushion® technology, which incorporates hydraulic bump stops into the suspension system to better control compression and rebound on damaged surfaces.

The New C5 X also comes with Advanced Comfort® seats as standard, which feature broad cushions and seat backs. These seats combine high-density foam at the core and a 15mm thick layer of extra textured foam on the surface to provide comfort and relaxation for occupants traveling on the challenging road network in Britain.

Is This Our First Look At The India-spec Citroen C3X Crossover?

The C3X will most likely be based on the C3 Aircross’ platform

Citroen C3X Crossover Spied

  • The Citroen C3X could hit the market in 2024.

  • Globally, the C3X is a sedan crossover that mixes executive styling with increased ground clearance.

  • Its cabin and features will most likely be similar to the C3 Aircross.

  • Could use Citroen’s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine.

  • Expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.

A heavily camouflaged test mule was recently spied testing in Bengaluru, standing out for its sloped rear end as there are not many coupe-styled mass-market offerings in India. While we cannot identify any brand logos, this test vehicle resembles the design language of Citroen models and appears to be the upcoming Citroen C3X crossover sedan. Here is what the spy shot tells us.

A Familiar Design

The spy video only got a glimpse of the test mule from a side angle, showing part of the front profile and the headlight’s design looks a lot like the ones you see on the Citroen C3 and the C3 Aircross. From the side, the most noticeable giveaway are the flap-type door handles seen on almost all India-spec Citroen models. The rear has the sloping crossover design with exact details hidden by another layer of camouflage.

Citroen eC4X

We did not get a glimpse of the interior, but the cabin of the C3X will most likely share similarities with the cabin of the Citroen C3 Aircross SUV.

Powertrain

Citroen C3 Aircross Engine

The India-spec Citroen C3X could be powered by the same 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine from the C3 and C3 Aircross. In the hatchback, this petrol unit churns out 110PS and 190Nm and is mated only to a 6-speed manual transmission. However, Citroen could increase the performance output and also add an automatic transmission for the C3X to match the C3 Aircross.

The carmaker could also offer the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit (82PS and 115Nm) paired with a 5-speed manual transmission for a more affordable entry point.

Features & Safety

Citroen C3 Aircross Cabin

The C3X will most likely have the same feature list as the C3 Aircross, which gets a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 7-inch digital driver’s display, and manual climate control.

Price & Launch

Citroen eC4X

The Citroen C3X crossover sedan will likely arrive in 2024 at an expected ex-showroom starting price of Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). The C3X will be an alternative to the likes of the Tata Curvv, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Volkswagen Virtus, and Skoda Slavia.

Citroen C3 Receives 0 Stars in Latin NCAP Crash Tests

Stability of the Bodyshell and Resistance to Loadings Rated as Inadequate

Citroen C3 Latin NCAP

The Citroen C3, which is available in both India and Latin American markets including Brazil, has recently undergone crash tests conducted by the Latin NCAP. Unfortunately, the crossover-hatch failed to obtain a single-star rating in the assessments.

Safety Features on Board

The tested C3 model was equipped with standard dual front airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), seatbelt reminder, and ISOFIX child seat anchorages. While it lacked seatbelt pretensioners, it did feature seatbelt load limiters.

In India, the C3 comes with standard features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, and front seatbelt reminders. Additionally, the turbo-petrol variants are equipped with electronic stability program (ESP), hill-hold assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Adult Occupant Protection

Citroen C3 Latin NCAP

The Citroen C3 scored 31 percent (12.21 points) in adult occupant protection, combining scores from frontal and side-impact crash tests.

Frontal Impact

The C3 provided ‘good’ protection for the driver and passenger’s head and neck, while showing ‘weak’ protection for the driver’s chest and ‘marginal’ protection for the passenger’s chest. The overall knee protection was ‘marginal’, except for the passenger’s left knee which showed ‘good’ protection. The tibias of both driver and passenger received ‘adequate’ protection. However, the C3’s footwell area and bodyshell were rated as ‘unstable’ and unable to withstand further loadings. The seat design also offered poor protection against whiplash.

Side Impact

Citroen C3 Latin NCAP

In the side-impact test, the C3 provided ‘adequate’ protection for the head and chest, and ‘good’ protection for the abdomen and pelvis.

However, the C3 did not undergo the side-pole impact test due to the absence of side head protection, even as an optional feature.

Also Read: Citroen eC3 vs Tata Tiago EV: Space & Practicality Comparison

Child Occupant Protection

The Citroen C3 received a 12 percent rating in child occupant protection. Here’s a breakdown of the results:

Frontal Impact

Both the 3-year-old and 1.5-year-old child seats were installed rearward-facing using ISOFIX anchorages. The C3 provided ‘good’ protection for the 3-year-old’s head, while preventing head contact with the interior for the younger child.

Side Impact

The child restraint systems (CRS) offered full protection during the side impact.

The Citroen C3 received deductions for poor markings of the ISOFIX anchorages, and the absence of an airbag warning when a child restraint system is installed in the front passenger seat. All seating positions are equipped with 3-point seatbelts.

Pedestrian Protection

Citroen C3 Latin NCAP

The C3 achieved a relatively higher score of 50 percent (23.88 points) in pedestrian protection. It offered ‘good’, ‘marginal’, and ‘adequate’ protection in most areas. However, it scored poorly in head protection around the windscreen and A-pillars. The upper leg protection was rated ‘adequate to good’, while the lower leg protection was rated ‘marginal to good’.

Safety Assist

The C3 received 35 percent (15 points) for safety assist. It was penalized for lacking important safety features according to the Latin NCAP. While the Brazil-spec C3 had a seatbelt reminder for the driver, it did not meet the Latin NCAP requirements. Additionally, the C3 lacked advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and speed limitation devices.
