See Mercedes G-Class, Jimny, Bronco Enjoy A Day Of Off-Roading 1:18-Scale Style

# See Mercedes G-Class, Jimny, Bronco Enjoy A Day Of Off-Roading 1:18-Scale Style

Boys never grow up, they say, their toys just get bigger, and more expensive. This isn’t completely accurate, however, as many grown boys love small toys. Especially if they have wheels and move like real-life machines. You know what we are talking about – detailed radio-controlled scale models of actual cars. And to the best of our knowledge, every single car enthusiast loves miniature car models.

For a good start to the week, we have a short two-minute video featuring some of the world’s most capable off-roaders in a 1:18 scale. These include the [Mercedes-Benz G-Class](https://www.motor1.com/mercedes-benz/amg-g63/), [Suzuki Jimny](https://www.motor1.com/suzuki/jimny/), [Ford Bronco](https://www.motor1.com/ford/bronco/), [Jeep Wrangler](https://www.motor1.com/jeep/wrangler/), and [Lada Niva](https://www.motor1.com/lada/niva/), with the latter being a heavily modified example. These scale models are part of the 1:18 collection of Nischay Sharma, the guy behind the *Miniature Automobiles* channel on *YouTube*.

The video starts with a silver G-Class in G500 trim, which has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in its full-scale version. This scale model realistically recreates the G500’s lower suspension which, however, sees no trouble overcoming miniature off-road obstacles.

Next is a modified Lada Niva with no bumpers, a lifted suspension, and grippy tires. There’s additional equipment on the roof and from this short video, this old-school crossover looks to be the most capable of all five models featured.

The Suzuki Jimny isn’t bad either. It shows proper chassis articulation and good skills in the trails and that’s in part thanks to its narrow tires. The Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler represent the American off-road academy with beefier tires and open-top cabins.

While absolutely brilliant, these little off-roaders don’t have the attention to detail Amalgam’s scale models come with. Take for example the [1:4 body replica of the Ferrari 250 GTO](https://www.motor1.com/news/630956/ferrari-250-gto-body-replica-amalgam/), which has been made using traditional coachbuilding methods, including panel-beating techniques for the body like they did in the old days of car manufacturing.

New Hyundai Santa Fe Shows H-Shaped Light Signature In Spy Shots

The upcoming new model of the Hyundai Santa Fe is expected to have a radical redesign compared to its current version. Despite being covered in heavy camouflage, it is clear that the midsize SUV will adopt a boxy shape, providing a roomier interior. The windows appear to be generous, suggesting that the fifth-generation model will be longer, wider, and taller.

Our spy photographers were able to get a close look at a prototype, which showcased its unique “H” daytime running lights that also function as turn signals. The Hyundai test vehicle seemed to have the complete production body, as evident from the cutouts in the camouflage for the front parking sensors, as well as the camera and radar located above and below the license plate, respectively.

2024 Lexus GX Already Receives Overlanding Makeover in Unofficial Rendering

The recently unveiled third-generation Lexus GX has already received a rugged makeover and new technologies. The SUV now offers an Overtrail trim, which includes mechanical upgrades and aesthetic enhancements. But what would the future hold for this model? New renderings from Kolesa.ru give us a glimpse of what an overlanding version of the GX could look like.

With its boxy and chiseled design, the 2024 GX seems like the perfect base for an adventure vehicle equipped with a roof tent. This digital rendering portrays the vehicle with a lifted suspension and BF Goodrich off-road tires. The black plastic cladding, present in the standard model, remains, but the new front bumper now features an integrated winch and additional LED lights. The roof also sports a light bar.

The rear bumper boasts another winch and LED bar. However, the main highlight of the overlanding upgrades is the foldable tent on the roof, possibly with an extending awning. Lastly, this adventure vehicle is distinguished by a new orange exterior color, setting it apart from the regular 2024 GX.

Based on the GA-F body-on-frame platform, the new GX is equipped with a double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link setup at the rear. An optional Adaptive Variable Suspension with active dampers is also available. Powering the GX is a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 engine delivering 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, making it the sole engine option at launch. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, this engine allows for a maximum towing capacity of 8,000 pounds.

If we hypothetically assume that this overlanding SUV is based on the Overtrail trim, it offers several upgrades over the standard model. These include 33-inch tires, a locking rear differential, and additional underbody protection.

Lifted 2023 Volkswagen Golf R Is A Pricey All-Terrain Hot Hatch

The original Volkswagen Golf was first introduced in 1974. However, it wasn’t until 1985, during the Mk2 era, that the first all-wheel-drive version, known as the Golf Syncro, was made available. In 1989, a more adventurous variant called the Golf Country was introduced with a raised suspension and other rugged features. Only 7,735 Golf Country cars were produced by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. Now, a new custom-built Golf R based on the current model aims to revive the spirit of the Golf Country.

Off-road specialist Delta4x4 has previewed this unique Golf R, which aims to explore new territories that no other Golf R has ventured into before. This lifted hot hatch comes with an 80 millimeter (3.14 inch) lift kit, adding to its off-road capabilities. It is equipped with custom 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. The aftermarket package also includes a roof rack for increased practicality, as well as five additional PIAA lights mounted on the hood.

Lamborghini’s Financial Success Allows Development of Huracan Successor Without Audi R8 Twin

In order to mitigate financial risks associated with investing in a niche product, Lamborghini previously collaborated with Audi to share costs. The Gallardo and Huracan were developed alongside the first- and second-generation R8 models. However, Audi has confirmed that there will not be a third collaboration. Despite this, Lamborghini, based in Sant’Agata Bolognese, has announced that a new Lamborghini model will be introduced in 2024. A top executive, Francesco Scardaoni, who serves as the director for the Asia-Pacific region, explains how this is made possible.

Scardaoni reveals that the upcoming Huracan replacement will be developed solely by Lamborghini, thanks to the company’s years of profitability. A major contributing factor to Lamborghini’s success is the immense popularity of its Urus SUV, which some enthusiasts may view as a necessary compromise. In 2022, Lamborghini achieved its best year ever with a turnover of €2.38 billion and an operating margin of 25.9 percent. It recorded an operating income of €614 million and recorded a record-breaking 9,233 unit deliveries, with 5,367 units being the Urus.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) not only offers environmental benefits but also reduces running costs. While the cost of living crisis has affected both EV and ICE (internal combustion engine) car owners, fuel costs continue to impact ICE car owners more heavily.

Charging an electric car at home is often cheaper than at public charging stations. This is especially important considering that more than 90% of EV drivers primarily charge their vehicles at home. By charging overnight when electricity rates are lower, EV owners can start each day with a full charge.

However, the cost gap between running an EV and an ICE car is closing. Initially, the higher purchase price of electric cars compared to their fossil fuel counterparts affected the cost difference, with a battery-powered Peugeot e-208 costing an additional £11,000 compared to the petrol version. Additionally, using public chargers can be more expensive, especially rapid DC units that can charge up to 80% capacity in less than half an hour.

With the UK Government planning to ban the sale of pure ICE cars by 2030, and energy markets experiencing global events, it is crucial to understand the costs associated with charging an EV.

How much will it cost to charge my car at home?

The majority of EV owners charge their cars at home, saving money compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars. The cost of charging at home depends on the car being charged and the electricity supplier’s tariff. Even with recent increases in electricity prices, EV owners still save money compared to filling up a traditional car.

For example, charging a 64kWh Kia e-Niro with a claimed range of 281 miles would cost approximately £20 for a full charge, based on the current average cost of 34p per kWh (according to the Government’s Energy Price guarantee as of the first quarter of 2023). While this is more expensive than a couple of years ago, when off-peak tariffs were as low as 12p per kWh, the cost of a full charge is still reasonable compared to fueling an equivalent petrol hatchback for the same distance, which would cost around a third more.

Volkswagen CEO acknowledges the “damage” caused by frustrating interiors and promises improvement

The CEO of Volkswagen, Thomas Schäfer, has admitted that the introduction of touch-sensitive controls in the brand’s cars had a negative impact. He has vowed to create simpler and more functional interiors for future Volkswagen vehicles.

Schäfer made these comments during the pre-production launch of the next-generation Volkswagen Tiguan. The new model’s cabin represents a departure from the interior designs of the Volkswagen ID 3 and Golf. It features two larger infotainment touchscreens and fewer physical controls.

One of the key changes is the removal of the criticized elements from the previous Volkswagen control layouts, such as unlit climate control sliders and haptic steering wheel buttons. Additionally, a new rotary controller has been installed on the center console to facilitate quick access to drive mode and volume settings.

In response to customer feedback, Schäfer emphasized the company’s efforts to address criticism and improve the usability of Volkswagen cars. He acknowledged that the unconventional interior arrangements introduced by his predecessor had caused frustration among customers and had a damaging effect on the brand’s reputation.

Schäfer explained that they spent considerable time systematically evaluating the functions that customers interact with in a vehicle. They prioritized these functions and determined which ones should be assigned to buttons or the screen. They also considered the intuitive reach for specific controls, such as the light switch.

Furthermore, Schäfer highlighted the importance of aesthetics in the design process. They aimed to create a limited number of high-quality buttons with pleasant haptics, similar to the experience of using aircraft controls.

The CEO emphasized the collaborative nature of this effort, involving a large team and extensive planning. They meticulously categorized and analyzed the functions, resulting in a comprehensive Excel spreadsheet.

Schäfer expressed his commitment to maintaining consistency across the Volkswagen lineup. Once they establish the desired formula for interior layouts, he advised against making significant changes with each new model. Instead, he recommended optimizing and refining the existing design to meet future needs without confusing customers.

His ultimate goal is for Volkswagen cars to provide an intuitive experience, ensuring that drivers know the location of all controls without hesitation.

History of the Volkswagen Golf – picture special

The Volkswagen Golf has become a benchmark in the world of hatchbacks. It has continuously evolved over the years, making it one of the most capable and versatile cars on the market. Despite all the changes, it still retains its original character.

The first generation of the Golf, known as the Mk1, was introduced in 1974. At that time, the hatchback genre was still in its early stages. The Golf played a significant role in shaping the hatchback market into what it is today.

Now, 46 years later, we have reached the eighth-generation model. Let’s take a look at how Volkswagen transformed a humble hatchback into an iconic car.

The Golf was designed as a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the Beetle. Its sleek lines were created by renowned designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The Golf’s instant success can be seen in the fact that one million units had already been produced by October 1976.

While the Golf started as a practical family car, a group of passionate VW engineers turned it into a performance car. This led to the creation of the Golf GTI in the late 1970s, igniting the hot hatch trend that continues today.

VW’s in-house design team updated Giugiaro’s design for the longer and wider Mk2 Golf, which debuted in 1983. It sold an impressive 6.3 million units before being replaced by the all-new Mk3 in 1991.

The Mk3 Golf won the 1992 European Car of the Year award, succeeding the Mk2 Golf which lost to the Peugeot 205 and Fiat Uno. The more luxurious and expensive Mk4 was introduced in 1997, featuring a softer and rounder design. It was followed by the larger and faster Mk5 in 2003, which received subtle updates for the Mk6 in 2008.

In addition to the standard hatchback, there have also been estate and convertible versions of the Golf. The Golf Cabriolet, with its distinctive basket-handle rollover bar (later removed in the Mk6 Cabrio), was originally produced by Karmann on a dedicated assembly line.

BTCC 2023: Hill and Turkington make history with BMW domination

In a remarkable display of dominance, West Surrey Racing swept all the races at Oulton Park in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) on Sunday. Jake Hill and Colin Turkington led BMW to victory, leaving their competitors trailing behind.

Hill had an almost perfect day individually, securing two wins, a second place, and three fastest laps for Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport.

Turkington’s performance was equally impressive. Starting last on the grid in the first race, the four-time champion made stunning progress and continued to excel in the second race. In the final race, he charged ahead to claim his 65th BTCC career win.

Ash Sutton, Tom Ingram, and Adam Morgan also achieved podium finishes, creating a significant shift in the title race halfway through the season. Sutton’s lead in the drivers’ standings has narrowed to just six points ahead of Ingram, while Hill and Turkington remain in close contention.

The second half of the BTCC campaign will resume at Croft in North Yorkshire on July 29-30.

Hill establishes BMW dominance with a win in race one

Hill kickstarted his 2023 campaign with an impressive victory in the first race.

Throughout the season, the Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport racer consistently showcased his talent, earning three second-place finishes. However, this win elevated his title challenge to new heights.

Hill made a fantastic start, overtaking pole-sitter Sutton in his BMW 330e M Sport on the run down to turn one. He successfully defended his position in the opening laps and gradually pulled away from championship leader Sutton in his Napa Racing UK Ford Focus ST.

Ingram of Bristol Street Motors with Excelr8 secured the final podium spot after a strong performance, coming through from sixth on the grid.

Hill secures a double win at Oulton Park

Hill continued his incredible form by claiming his first-ever BTCC double, winning the second race from start to finish.

Despite facing an early safety car period, Hill maintained his lead throughout the race and pulled away to secure another victory ahead of Sutton.

The battle for the final podium position intensified as Ingram successfully held off a late charge from Turkington, who showcased his exceptional skills once again by making significant progress.
