The new fully electric EM90 premium MPV further expands Volvo Cars’ portfolio

Volvo’s new EM90 is a fully electric premium MPV designed to offer a comfortable living space on the move for you and your loved ones. It also aims to broaden the appeal of Volvo Cars and meet a wide range of customer needs.

The EM90 is an example of Volvo’s ability to innovate and meet specific market demands. The MPV segment has gained significant popularity, particularly in many parts of Asia, which is why the EM90 is being introduced first in China, the world’s largest car market.

Following the launch of the award-winning fully electric EX30 small SUV earlier this year, the EM90 marks the second expansion of Volvo’s model portfolio. Both the EX30 and EM90 will help Volvo reach new audiences, cover a larger share of the global automotive market, and achieve more profitable volume.

The EM90 also reaffirms Volvo’s commitment to becoming a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030. In the years to come, Volvo will introduce a complete family of new, fully electric cars, meeting customers’ expectations with zero tailpipe emissions.

This updated model portfolio not only ensures that Volvo will exclusively sell fully electric cars worldwide by 2030, a crucial part of the company’s sustainability commitments, but also serves as a step towards profitable growth and establishing Volvo as an industry leader in sustainable mobility.

“With the EM90, we’re taking Volvo Cars’ heritage and leadership in safety into the exciting new electric MPV segment,” said Jim Rowan, Chief Executive at Volvo Cars. “It allows us to tap new market demand we’ve not explored before and broadens the appeal of the Volvo brand to more people.”

A long heritage of versatility

While the MPV segment is a new venture for Volvo, the concept of versatility is not new. The Volvo Duett, introduced in 1953, was designed as a versatile and spacious car long before the MPV segment existed.

The Duett, celebrating its 70th birthday this year, remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. It was popular among families and business owners in Scandinavia and the United States.

In later years, the Duett served as inspiration for Volvo’s range of estates and was an important source of inspiration for the EM90’s designers.

Whether as a practical company car or a spacious family vehicle that doubled as a sleeping space during camping trips, the Duett had a variant for various scenarios – its name, which means ‘two cars in one’, reflects its versatility.

Read more about the features in the EM90 and what it can do in this blog post.

An important new segment

The EM90 is a significant addition to Volvo’s fully electric portfolio and will bolster the company’s position as one of the fastest-growing brands in the premium pure electric segment. Although the premium MPV segment in China is relatively small at present, it holds importance. Similar to the Duett, Volvo’s EM90 premium MPV serves a dual purpose for its customers.

When not used for family trips, the EM90 can function as executive business transport, providing a comfortable interior environment for meetings and business calls. In short, for customers seeking safety and a spacious, versatile, and comfortable premium experience on the move, the EM90 offers an exciting new option.

The Volvo EM90 is initially launching in China and is now available for pre-orders in the country.

Watch the grand opening of the new EM90 with our chief executive, Jim Rowan, here.

A confident exterior with an illuminating grille

The EM90 aims to set a new standard of style in the MPV segment. Inside, it serves as your living room on the move, providing ultimate comfort and a premium experience. The tail-lamp signatures extend both upward and downward, with the metal strip representing the core horizon line.

The EM90 is available in four exterior colors, inspired by the interplay between nature and light.

Competitive range and bi-directional charging

As a fully electric car, the EM90 offers a range of up to 738 kilometers under the CLTC testing cycle. It features a 116 kWh battery and an expected charging time from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. The EM90 is powered by an e-motor with a 200kW power output, enabling an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.

Similar to the EX90 flagship SUV, the EM90 is equipped for bi-directional charging, allowing the use of its battery as a power bank to charge other electric cars and appliances.

The EM90 comes with 19- or 20-inch aero wheels, combining engineering artistry with aero efficiency to optimize driving range.

In terms of safety features, the EM90 incorporates safe space technology designed to protect everyone in and around the car. It integrates 96 years of safety DNA and extensive knowledge based on real-world accident research into a new segment. More about the safety features in the EM90 can be found in this blog post.

An outstanding experience

Additional comfort comes through top-notch sound isolation and road noise cancellation technology, while dual-chamber air suspension and silent tires further improve the ride experience for everyone in the EM90.

All these features work together to minimize road noise, allowing for the optimum sound quality from a total of 21 Bowers & Wilkins speakers embedded in your own private concert hall on the move.

The EM90 offers cutting-edge technology designed to make life easier and more enjoyable, such as the Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies and 5G connectivity where available.

The car includes a voice assistant visualized in a refreshed Volvo avatar inside a 15.4-inch infotainment screen for the driver. Additionally, there is a high-definition 15.6-inch roof-mounted screen that folds down whenever entertainment or a business video meeting is desired. This screen also supports mobile screen projection and various third-party apps.

The multi-functional set of screens and smart surfaces in the EM90 enables a variety of in-cabin scenarios, allowing for easy transformation of the interior into a theater, meeting room, or bedroom for the rear seats with the flick of a switch or a command to the voice assistant, adjusting screens, seats, windows, air conditioner, and lighting accordingly.

Like all new Volvo cars, the EM90 will receive over-the-air software updates, providing continuous improvement over time. A digital key and remote functions via the Volvo Cars app offer easy access and control of the car.

“The Volvo EM90 is a supremely comfortable electric car with a smart cabin, fast charging, a competitive driving range, Volvo’s unique design language, and a high level of premium in every detail,” said Jim Rowan. “But far more important is what it does for you. It gives you room to connect. Room to create. Room to relax. Room for you and for those around you.”

The Volvo EM90 will first be available in China and is now open for pre-orders for customers in China.
