Vauxhall Electric Models Lead Sales in Three Segments, According to SMMT New Car Sales Figures

  • Three Vauxhall electric passenger car models become best-sellers in their segments for July
  • The Corsa Electric remains the best-selling Small Electric Car (Electric B-Hatch) for the year
  • The Mokka Electric leads sales in the Small Electric SUV (Electric B-SUV) category for 2023
  • The Vivaro Electric Life is the top-selling electric MPV in the UK so far this year
  • Vauxhall plans to become an electric-only manufacturer by 2028, ahead of the UK Government deadline

Recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that Vauxhall’s electric car range continues to perform well in the UK market. In July, Vauxhall’s electric models topped the sales charts in three segments.

The Corsa Electric was the best-selling Small Electric Car (Electric B-Hatch) in July and is leading the segment for the year, with 2,141 units sold so far. Similarly, the Mokka Electric emerged as the best-selling model in the Small Electric SUV (Electric B-SUV) category for both July and the year, with 5,573 units sold to date.

Furthermore, the Vivaro Electric Life has achieved the status of being the UK’s best-selling electric MPV, with 1,175 units registered this year.

Aside from the electric models, the Corsa also secured the top spot in the B-Hatch category in July and is the second best-selling car overall in the UK market so far this year, with 23,751 units sold.

Vauxhall has set ambitious goals to become an all-electric brand by 2028, which is seven years earlier than the UK Government’s deadline.

James Taylor, the Managing Director of Vauxhall, expressed his excitement about the success of the electric models, emphasizing that Vauxhall is leading the way in facilitating Britain’s transition to electric vehicles.

Bigger, bolder Vauxhall Crossland to launch with EV in 2024

The Vauxhall Crossland will undergo significant changes and be offered with an electric option in its second generation next year. Vauxhall announced earlier this year that all its models will have an EV option by 2024, with the Crossland and Grandland crossovers being the last to transition.

Vauxhall CEO James Taylor considers the electrification of these two popular model lines as a major milestone towards the brand’s ambition of becoming fully electric by 2028. Already, the Corsa, Astra, Mokka, Combo, and Vivaro are available with battery power. Additionally, Vauxhall plans to introduce two more electric-only models – the Manta crossover and a successor to the Insignia – in the next five years.

While Vauxhall has not revealed the design of its upcoming EVs, it has confirmed that an “Experimental” concept will be showcased at the Munich motor show in September. However, the electric version of the Crossland’s replacement has been spotted for the first time, showcasing a radically different appearance with chunkier edges and a stronger SUV styling.

The new Crossland features Vauxhall’s distinctive ‘Vizor’ front end, slimline LED headlights, and a contrasting wraparound ‘grille’ panel. The increase in size indicates a focus on enhanced practicality for family buyers. The current Crossland is comparable in size to models like the Ford Puma, Nissan Juke, and Seat Arona, but the larger dimensions of the new model could place it in competition with the Kia Niro, Skoda Karoq, and Dacia Duster.

New 2023 Vauxhall Corsa range topped by £38,585 EV

Vauxhall has announced the pricing and specifications for the updated Corsa supermini. The facelifted model now offers new electric and hybrid powertrain options and features Vauxhall’s ‘Vizor’ grille, which is the last current Vauxhall model to receive this design element.

The base Design trim of the new Corsa will start at £19,625, while the mid-range GS cars will be priced from £22,005. The top-spec Ultimate trim will have an additional premium of £3,600.

The electric version of the Corsa, which comes with a 51kWh battery and a choice of 134bhp or 154bhp, will start at £32,445 and £38,585 respectively. This means that the entry-level Corsa electric is cheaper than the £34,470 Mini Electric but slightly more expensive than the £29,240 Renault Zoe.

The Design-spec cars will come equipped with a 7.0-inch infotainment system, parking sensors, and various safety systems such as lane departure warning and speed sign recognition. The GS trim will include a larger 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, rear parking camera, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The top-end trim will have matrix headlights, heated and massaging seats upholstered in Alcantara, and a heated steering wheel.

According to design boss Mark Adams, the new Corsa has taken a significant step forward in terms of powertrain options, particularly with the Corsa Electric. The electric version now features an upgraded 154bhp motor, which is also found in the Peugeot e-208, and offers an improved WLTP range of 246 miles.

Starting from 3 August, the Corsa Electric will be available with the current 134bhp motor and 51kWh battery, providing a range of 222 miles. Both electric versions will come with an on-board 11kW charger, allowing for a full charge from 0-100% in five hours and 15 minutes. Rapid charging from 10% to 80% is claimed to take 30 minutes.

In addition to the electric options, a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid engine, the Corsa’s first hybrid powertrain, will be introduced later this year. It will be available with two power levels: 99bhp and 134bhp.

The Corsa range will also include entry-level petrol engines with power outputs of 74bhp or 99bhp, available with a five-speed manual gearbox. Higher-power petrol engines will be paired with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

Customers can begin ordering their Corsa now, and deliveries are expected to start towards the end of this year. Vauxhall hopes that the updated design and increased powertrain choices, along with the extended electric range, will help the Corsa regain its position as the best-selling car in the UK, a title it lost last year to the Nissan Qashqai SUV, with competition from the Tesla Model Y and Ford Puma.

According to Mark Adams, the Corsa has been a phenomenal success since its launch and has been an important car for Vauxhall.

FIRST GLIMPSE OF STUNNING NEW VAUXHALL EXPERIMENTAL

  • Forward looking: Vauxhall Experimental gives an insight into the future of the brand
  • Attention to detail: Flush body surfacing, aero-efficiency and resource-conserving

After revealing the name of its upcoming concept car as the Vauxhall Experimental just last week, the British brand has now offered a tantalizing preview of the design study by releasing first images of the vehicle. The photographs reveal the extreme precision and high attention to detail of the Vauxhall Experimental, which will show the future of the Vauxhall brand with its more technical and extreme interpretation of the Bold and Pure design philosophy.

“The Vauxhall Experimental marks the start of a new chapter for our brand. It was designed to provide a tangible vision of where the Vauxhall brand is heading. We will be revealing more details soon – so stay tuned,” said Mark Adams, Vice-President, Design, Vauxhall.

One of the most eye-catching features teased by the images is the further development of the Compass, the guiding element of Vauxhall’s design philosophy. The illuminated Vauxhall Griffin sits confidently at the center of the compass in a new iteration of the Vauxhall Vizor, the brand’s characteristic front fascia and technology hub. It is flanked by the elongated wing signature lighting on the horizontal axis while the illuminated center crease adds further drama. A distinctive red-light graphic on flush body surfacing, devoid of unnecessary shut lines, suggests the repetition of the compass at the rear of the Vauxhall Experimental.

Elsewhere, aerodynamic efficiency has long been a hallmark of Vauxhall passenger cars and the vane-like construction of the eye-catching wheels indicate that the Vauxhall Experimental will also share this attribute. The futuristic cues are continued on the interior with the profiled seat structure hinting at a sustainable, resource-conserving approach to the ergonomic seats that are typical for Vauxhall vehicles.

The Vauxhall Experimental will celebrate its world premiere at this year’s IAA Mobility in Munich (5 to 10 September 2023).

VAUXHALL ANNOUNCES NEW CONCEPT CAR: VAUXHALL EXPERIMENTAL

  • Vauxhall’s latest concept car will be called the Vauxhall Experimental
  • Concept will make its global debut at IAA Mobility in Munich from 5-10 September 2023
  • Vauxhall Experimental will influence future production vehicles and showcase the next stage in Vauxhall’s Bold & Pure design philosophy

Vauxhall has announced that its new concept car will be named the Vauxhall Experimental. The car will be introduced to a worldwide audience at IAA Mobility in Munich from 5-10 September 2023. More details about the concept will be revealed in the coming weeks.

According to James Taylor, Managing Director of Vauxhall, the Vauxhall Experimental will provide a clear vision of the brand’s future design direction and will have an impact on the design of their future production vehicles.

The Vauxhall Experimental represents the next step in the development of Vauxhall’s Bold & Pure design philosophy, which was first showcased with the GT Xperimental in 2018. This design philosophy aims to reflect Vauxhall’s core values of being British, Ingenious, Progressive, and Approachable.

The new concept car further strengthens the brand within Stellantis by emphasizing Vauxhall’s brand pillars, which include a simplified and refined experience, accessible technology, and sustainable innovation (Greenovation).

The name “Experimental” has a history dating back to 1966 with the XVR concept (Xperimental Vauxhall Research) showcased at the Geneva Motor Show. This concept featured innovative design elements such as gull-wing doors, a split windscreen, and unique rear lights that later influenced Vauxhall’s production models.

In 2018, the GT Xperimental concept demonstrated Vauxhall’s design vision and introduced the Vauxhall Vizor and Compass design principles, which have since become iconic features of Vauxhall’s passenger cars.

VAUXHALL REMAINS THE UK’S BEST-SELLING ELECTRIC VAN MANUFACTURER

  • Vauxhall continues to dominate the UK electric van sales in June.
  • The Vivaro Electric is the top-selling e-LCV in the country, with 482 units registered in June and 2389 year-to-date.
  • Vauxhall holds nearly a third of the market share for electric vans sold in the first six months of the year.
  • Vauxhall is one of the few manufacturers in the UK that offers fully electric vans throughout its entire lineup.

According to the latest registration figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Vauxhall remains the leading manufacturer of electric Light Commercial Vehicles (e-LCVs) in the UK.

The figures for June show that Vauxhall has a 32.0% market share in the e-LCV segment year-to-date, meaning one out of every three electric vans sold in the UK so far this year is a Vauxhall.

The Vivaro Electric is the best-selling new electric van in the UK, holding the top position in both June and year-to-date sales. In June alone, 482 units of the Vivaro Electric were sold, bringing the total to 2389 units for the first six months of the year.

Vauxhall is one of the few manufacturers in the UK that offers a fully electric van across its entire model lineup. The company has committed to becoming an electric-only manufacturer by 2028, seven years ahead of the UK Government’s deadline.

James Taylor, Managing Director of Vauxhall UK, stated that Vauxhall is the preferred choice for businesses, fleets, and private buyers in search of capable and efficient electric vans. The company is dedicated to electrifying Britain and working with businesses of all sizes to meet their current and future electric vehicle needs.

The Vivaro Electric, which has been recognized as the ‘Medium Van of the Year’ at the What Van? Awards 2022 and the ‘Best Medium Electric Van’ at the Driving Electric Awards 2022, as well as being crowned the ‘International Van of the Year 2021’, offers great flexibility. It is available with either a 50kWh or a 75kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of up to 205 miles on a single charge and a maximum payload of up to 1,226kg.

VAUXHALL RELEASES ELECTRIC VEHICLE ETIQUETTE GUIDE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DEBRETT’S TO SIMPLIFY THE SWITCH TO EV

  • Vauxhall has launched a new ‘Etiquette Guide’ to help electric vehicle (EV) drivers
  • The guide, created in partnership with Debrett’s, provides clear guidance on various aspects of EV ownership
  • A survey conducted by Vauxhall shows that a lack of guidance on using public EV chargers deters drivers from switching to an EV
  • The guide includes advice on using public charging points, negotiating charging time with others, and being a good EV house guest
  • Vauxhall is committed to electrifying Britain and will offer electric variants across its entire car and van lineup by 2024, becoming an electric-only brand by 2028
  • Read the full guide at: https://www.vauxhall.co.uk/electric/ev-etiquette-guide.html

Vauxhall has partnered with Debrett’s, a leading British etiquette expert, to release an ‘Etiquette Guide’ designed specifically for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. The Guide to Electric Vehicle Etiquette offers tips and guidance to help drivers navigate various aspects of public EV life.

The release of this guide is timely as Vauxhall’s research indicates that the lack of guidance on using public EV chargers is a significant deterrent for UK drivers considering the switch to electric vehicles. Additionally, many drivers expressed uncertainty about EV ownership etiquette.

Compiled with input from EV drivers and industry experts, the guide covers a wide range of topics including queueing at public charging hubs, negotiating charging time with other drivers, and being a considerate EV house guest.

One interesting finding from Vauxhall’s research is the difference in behavior between EV drivers and petrol/diesel vehicle owners. A majority of plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle drivers indicated that they would allow another driver who needed less charge to go ahead of them in the queue at a public charge point. In contrast, only a small percentage of petrol and diesel drivers would do the same at a petrol station.

The research also found that many drivers feel uncomfortable asking another driver to vacate a space at a petrol station or EV charger if they need to refill or charge. To address this potential issue, Vauxhall’s guide provides advice on how to approach other drivers politely when their vehicle is almost fully charged.

Vauxhall’s research also highlighted the problem of misuse of EV charging bays by petrol and diesel drivers, with nearly half of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle drivers reporting that they have been unable to park in a charging bay because a non-electric vehicle was occupying the space. Additionally, some EV drivers faced difficulties with charging bay sizes not accommodating their vehicles.

When it comes to home charging, a significant number of drivers mentioned that they would expect visitors who asked to charge their EV at their home to cover the electricity costs. The guide suggests discussing this matter politely with the host, considering electricity tariffs to charge at the cheapest time, and perhaps leaving a small token of appreciation as a parting gift. Alternatively, drivers can rent charging facilities from nearby private residents through companies like Vauxhall’s partner, JustPark.

Liz Wyse from Debrett’s stated that the new Guide to Electric Vehicle Etiquette aims to address uncertainties and provide clear guidance on charging and parking protocols, contributing to a civilized and agreeable EV experience.

Vauxhall’s commitment to electrification includes the introduction of the Astra Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric in 2023, offering customers a choice of six fully electric passenger vehicles. By 2024, Vauxhall plans to offer a fully electric variant for every model in its lineup and become an electric-only brand by 2028, seven years ahead of the UK Government deadline. Furthermore, Vauxhall already provides a fully electric lineup for its light commercial vehicle (LCV) range and is the UK’s best-selling e-LCV manufacturer.

The Guide to Electric Vehicle Etiquette also addresses other areas of concern, such as queuing properly at public charge points and following EV-dedicated signage. A majority of respondents in the survey felt that there is an inadequate number of public signs on UK roads to help EV drivers find suitable charging points.

James Taylor, Managing Director of Vauxhall, emphasized that the guide aims to make owning an electric vehicle as easy as possible and addresses the day-to-day questions that prospective EV owners may have.

Currently, over 100 Vivaro Electric vans are in use by police forces in the UK, with the first ones deployed over a year ago. In addition, more than 200 Corsa Electric vehicles have been utilized as neighborhood patrol cars since 2021. James Taylor, Managing Director of Vauxhall, stated that in 2024, they will achieve the significant milestone of offering a fully-electric variant for every model. This also means that all future Vauxhall models will have a fully-electric variant from their launch, showing their commitment to driving towards an electric future in Britain.

Aside from fully-electric options, Vauxhall also offers Plug-In Hybrid versions of the Astra, Astra Sports Tourer, and Grandland.
