The Volvo XC40 B5 AWD puts up a considerably tough fight against the Italian newcomer thanks to an attractive and sleek interior and exterior design, a comprehensive suite of safety features, and a spacious interior. The Tonale gains some ground on the performance and fuel consumption fronts, but these are the only areas where it excels next to the Swede. The Tonale’s smaller downsized hybrid engine results in a better 29 MPG figure compared to the XC40’s 26 MPG estimate. It consequently covers more range despite its gas tank being smaller. The Tonale produces 38 more horsepower than the XC40, but only manages a 0-60 MPH sprint time that’s one-tenth of a second faster.
Interior dimensions are where the Tonale shines against the Volvo despite accommodating a fairly sizable battery pack. The XC40’s cargo space measures in at 16 cubic-feet, which is significantly smaller than the 22.9 cubic-feet offered by the Alfa Romeo. There are fractional differences in front and rear headroom and legroom figures, but the Volvo’s shoulder room is a full inch wider at the front and two inches wider at the rear.

The last-generation Toyota Prius drivetrain, criticized for being lethargic, puts the Lexus UX at a significant performance disadvantage. This is admittedly better than the Tonale’s 29 MPG estimate when running on its turobocharged ICE, but it doesn’t come close to the hybrid system’s 77 MPGe estimate. The UX has been praised for fairly inviting handling characteristics, thanks to the sharp TNGA chassis, but the Tonale’s performance-inspired architecture provides better driver satisfaction.
The Lexus UX further disappoints on the interior packaging front as it only offers 17.1 cubic-feet of trunk space, compared to the Tonale-s 22.9 cubic-feet of space. The UX falls short on all front and rear head- and legroom comparisons by just under an inch. The UX gains some points on the pricing front with its lower $36,660 starting price, but it comes at the cost of some crucial standard features. The $39,150 Premium trim resolves these shortcomings, while still undercutting the Tonale.

Kawasaki has unveiled its first two electric motorcycles, the 2024 Ninja e-1 and Z e-1, in the US market. These bikes, equivalent to 125cc models, come with a 5 kilowatt interior permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that generates a peak power of 9 kW. The bikes feature regenerative energy from deceleration and do not have a clutch. They are powered by removable 30 amp-hour battery packs, which can be charged in three different ways and take approximately 3.7 hours for a full charge. The estimated range of the bikes is 41 miles on a single charge. The Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 have a steel trellis frame design, telescopic front forks, and bottom-link Uni-Trak rear suspension. They are equipped with a 4.3-inch TFT color display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a small front trunk for storage. The bikes offer two power modes and an e-Boost function for acceleration and top speed. Kawasaki is taking orders for these bikes in the US, with delivery expected to start from December 2023 through June 2024. The starting price for the Ninja e-1 is $7,599, and for the Z e-1 is $7,299.
The 2023 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, an official Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) Land Speed World Records event, has been canceled for the second year in a row. Last year, the event was canceled due to flooding in the area. Despite closely monitoring the conditions, organizers determined that the course conditions would not allow the event to take place as scheduled. This year, the event has been canceled again due to significant rain resulting from Hurricane Hilary.
