Why The Supermarine Spitfire Was One Of The Most Innovative WW2 Jets

In the early 1930s, the Air Ministry issued a specification called F7/30, which called for the development of a fighter aircraft that combined heavy firepower with speed. The goal was to have a fighter that could fly at 250 miles per hour and carry four guns.

Vickers Supermarine initially failed to meet this specification, but after several prototypes and improvements, including the use of Rolls-Royce’s PV-XII V12 engine, the Supermarine Spitfire started to take shape. The first prototype, named K5054, took to the skies in March 1936, and further developments made it even more impressive. The final version of the Spitfire surpassed the initial requirements, with a top speed of 348 mph and eight Browning guns.

The Spitfire proved to be a formidable aircraft and a powerful weapon. It outperformed other fighter planes of its time, including its British counterpart, the Hawker Hurricane. Historian Paul Beaver described the Spitfire as having a certain mystique, with troops often claiming to have been defeated by a Spitfire even if it was actually a Hurricane. The unique and innovative design of the Spitfire played a significant role in securing its place in aviation history.

Subaru Outback: A Reluctant Performer

The Subaru Outback comes equipped with a 167bhp naturally aspirated boxer engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). While this combination allows for a relaxed and adequate driving experience, it falls short when it comes to performance. The CVT is programmed to keep the engine at around 3000rpm during moderate acceleration, resulting in a quiet ride without frequent gear changes.

However, when you need to accelerate quickly or merge onto a busy motorway, the lack of power becomes apparent. The 167bhp is simply not enough for a car weighing 1690kg. In our tests, the Outback managed a 0-62mph time of 9.8 seconds, which is not impressive.

The CVT does its best to maximize power delivery. When you push the accelerator, it holds the revs in the band where the engine produces the most power. However, for lighter acceleration, the gearbox introduces some simulated gear changes to reduce noise. This feature is appreciated because the engine is not pleasant to listen to. It is either too quiet at low revs or sounds like a strained diesel engine under high loads. Starting the car after it has been shut down by the start-stop system also takes multiple attempts and does not sound very smooth. Unfortunately, disabling the start-stop system requires going into the touchscreen settings as there is no dedicated button for it.

The Outback is rated to tow 2000kg, but it is uncertain whether this engine would be suitable for such tasks. In the US, the same engine is available with 15bhp more, and there’s also a turbocharged 2.4-liter version with 260bhp, which seems like a better fit for the car.

In terms of braking, the Outback offers a natural feel with no regen interference. During an emergency stop from 70mph on a dry track, our test car took about two meters longer to stop than the Skoda Superb. It’s worth noting that our test car had one mismatched tire, but it did not noticeably affect stability.

Off-road Capability

One of the main advantages of the Subaru Outback compared to cars like the Skoda Superb is its off-road capabilities. However, it’s important to acknowledge its limitations. The Outback is not a true off-roader as it lacks low gearing and locking differentials. Additionally, its long overhangs result in modest approach and departure angles, which are not as impressive as those of the Dacia Duster.

That being said, the Outback still offers more off-road capability than most vehicles in its class, apart from the Land Rover Defender. It features sturdy skid plates at the front and rear, allowing you to tackle various terrains without worrying about damaging the bumper or sump.

The Outback has two off-road modes: snow/dirt and deep snow/mud. Even with standard road tires, it performs well on gravel slopes and muddy sections. When coasting downhill in off-road mode, the car automatically activates the hill descent control system.

In addition to the electric variants, the new Corsa is also available with a choice of efficient 1.2-litre petrol engines. Customers can select from a naturally-aspirated 75PS engine with a five-speed manual gearbox, a turbocharged 100PS engine with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox, or a 130PS unit offered as an eight-speed automatic.

Later this year, Vauxhall will introduce a new 48-volt hybrid powertrain that provides improved efficiency without the need for charging.

Specification

As part of Vauxhall’s simplified range, petrol variants of the new Corsa are available in three trims: Design, GS, and Ultimate. The Corsa Electric is available with the next-generation 156PS powertrain in GS and Ultimate trims, while from 3rd August, the existing 136PS powertrain will also be offered in Design and GS trims.

All Corsa models come with LED headlights as standard. The Design trim offers automatic headlights and wipers, and rear parking sensors for added convenience. Safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and speed sign recognition.

The GS trim adds a rear-view parking camera with a high-resolution panoramic display for Electric 156PS models. The alloy wheels are upgraded to 17 inches, and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster is included. Electric GS 156PS models also come with keyless entry and start.

The Ultimate trim enhances the headlights with Vauxhall’s IntelliLux LED® Pixel Matrix light technology. Additional driver assist features include Blind Spot Alert (also available on Electric GS 156PS models) and Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Positioning Assist. Comfort is improved with heated and massaging seats finished in Alcantara® and a heated steering wheel. Keyless entry and start are available on both petrol and Electric variants.

New 2023 Vauxhall Corsa range topped by £38,585 EV

Vauxhall has announced the pricing and specifications for the updated Corsa supermini. The facelifted model now offers new electric and hybrid powertrain options and features Vauxhall’s ‘Vizor’ grille, which is the last current Vauxhall model to receive this design element.

The base Design trim of the new Corsa will start at £19,625, while the mid-range GS cars will be priced from £22,005. The top-spec Ultimate trim will have an additional premium of £3,600.

The electric version of the Corsa, which comes with a 51kWh battery and a choice of 134bhp or 154bhp, will start at £32,445 and £38,585 respectively. This means that the entry-level Corsa electric is cheaper than the £34,470 Mini Electric but slightly more expensive than the £29,240 Renault Zoe.

The Design-spec cars will come equipped with a 7.0-inch infotainment system, parking sensors, and various safety systems such as lane departure warning and speed sign recognition. The GS trim will include a larger 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, rear parking camera, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The top-end trim will have matrix headlights, heated and massaging seats upholstered in Alcantara, and a heated steering wheel.

According to design boss Mark Adams, the new Corsa has taken a significant step forward in terms of powertrain options, particularly with the Corsa Electric. The electric version now features an upgraded 154bhp motor, which is also found in the Peugeot e-208, and offers an improved WLTP range of 246 miles.

Starting from 3 August, the Corsa Electric will be available with the current 134bhp motor and 51kWh battery, providing a range of 222 miles. Both electric versions will come with an on-board 11kW charger, allowing for a full charge from 0-100% in five hours and 15 minutes. Rapid charging from 10% to 80% is claimed to take 30 minutes.

In addition to the electric options, a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid engine, the Corsa’s first hybrid powertrain, will be introduced later this year. It will be available with two power levels: 99bhp and 134bhp.

The Corsa range will also include entry-level petrol engines with power outputs of 74bhp or 99bhp, available with a five-speed manual gearbox. Higher-power petrol engines will be paired with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

Customers can begin ordering their Corsa now, and deliveries are expected to start towards the end of this year. Vauxhall hopes that the updated design and increased powertrain choices, along with the extended electric range, will help the Corsa regain its position as the best-selling car in the UK, a title it lost last year to the Nissan Qashqai SUV, with competition from the Tesla Model Y and Ford Puma.

According to Mark Adams, the Corsa has been a phenomenal success since its launch and has been an important car for Vauxhall.

Human Horizons HiPhi X: A Closer Look

The Human Horizons HiPhi X boasts impressive digital screens, although they were not fully operational during our test drive. Once they are up and running, they are expected to provide a rich digital experience.

The central infotainment console is complex, similar to a Tesla, as it integrates most secondary systems and adjustment functions. From adjusting door mirrors to controlling ventilation settings, everything is done through the touchscreen menu.

Initially, it may seem overwhelming and potentially distracting. However, with time, users will become familiar with which functions can be adjusted while driving and which need to be set before departure.

One positive aspect is that the large display for the front passenger is designed not to distract the driver. It also has the option to be turned off when not in use.

The HiPhi X offers generous space in the first and second rows, while the third row is suitable for adults of average height and below. The overall space is in line with other vehicles in its class.

When it comes to material quality, the HiPhi X may not match the standards of brands like Audi or Range Rover. Nevertheless, considering this is Human Horizons’ first production car developed in just three and a half years, it is an impressive achievement.

The front seats are comfortable and adjustable, and the driving position is more semi-recumbent than upright, giving a unique feel.

The only downside is the limited rearward visibility, which can be improved by relying on the rear-view camera. Fortunately, most owners of this type of vehicle would likely be comfortable using the camera.

Similar to the HiPhi Z, the HiPhi X offers a refined and comfortable driving experience. Despite its size, it handles well on the road and benefits from modern suspension and steering technology. While it may not be an exciting drive, it does a great job of maintaining comfort for the occupants.

The GSe stands for Grand Sport Electric, which is Vauxhall’s new sub-brand for performance vehicles that combine electric power with sharp handling and stylish design. At launch, there are three GSe variants available: Grandland GSe, Astra GSe, and Astra Sports Tourer GSe. All three models feature unique styling upgrades both inside and outside, as well as powerful electric drivetrains and improved handling due to suspension and steering enhancements.

Orders are already open for the Grandland GSe and Astra GSe models.

Astra Sports Tourer GSe – electrified performance

The Plug-in Hybrid powertrain in the regular Astra Sports Tourer has been upgraded for the GSe variants. The Astra Sports Tourer GSe is equipped with a 180PS 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine connected to an 81.2kW (110PS) electric motor, resulting in a total power output of 225PS and a maximum torque of 360Nm. This is an increase from the standard Plug-in Hybrid variants, which have 180PS and 250Nm. These upgrades enable the Astra Sports Tourer GSe to accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 146mph.

The Astra Sports Tourer GSe is equipped with a 12.4kWh battery, offering up to 39 miles of pure electric range. With emissions as low as 26g/km CO2, the Astra Sports Tourer GSe qualifies for a Benefit-in-Kind rate of 12%.

Enhanced driving experience

Vauxhall engineers have made adjustments to the suspension of the Astra Sports Tourer GSe to improve handling. The car now features 11% stiffer springs and Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology by KONI, which adjusts the damping characteristics to provide a smooth and balanced ride.

The steering of the Astra Sports Tourer GSe has also been recalibrated to deliver a sportier feel and better feedback. The steering response has been increased by 9% compared to standard models, improving the on-centre feel and feedback at speed. Additionally, the Sport mode on GSe models has been adjusted to engage the electronic stability control (ESC) slightly later.

Distinctive design and features

The Astra Sports Tourer GSe has several styling upgrades to make it stand out on the road. The revised suspension and damping profile contribute to a 10mm lower profile, while the 18-inch ‘Commodore’ wheels give the car a unique stance. The car also features a black roof and black Griffin logos.

All Astra Sports Tourer GSe models come with IntelliLux adaptive LED® Pixel headlights and dark tinted rear windows.

Inside the car, there are Alcantara®-trimmed performance front seats that are certified by Germany’s AGR (Campaign for Healthier Backs), as well as a GSe-specific leather steering wheel. The car is equipped with a Multimedia Pure Panel Pro Navigation system that includes a 10-inch digital instrument display and a 10-inch touchscreen with Natural Voice Recognition. Other features include wireless smartphone charging and Intelli-HUD head-up display technology for an enhanced driving experience.

For improved safety and convenience, Astra Sports Tourer GSe models come with Intelli-Drive technology that includes Forward Collision Alert, Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Drowsiness Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Assistant, Cross Traffic and Side Blind Spot alert, and Automatic Speed Assistant with Stop Function.
