Stage is set for an electrifying weekend at the BMW PGA Championship.

+++ Exciting leaderboard ahead of the “Moving Day” +++ Fully-electric BMW i5 Hole-in-One Award still up for grabs +++ Live concerts in the evenings +++ “Dress rehearsal” for Ryder Cup Team Europe +++

Munich/Wentworth. The second round of the BMW PGA Championship was completed on Saturday morning at the Wentworth Club. The tournament, which is the flagship event of the DP World Tour’s Rolex Series, has drawn a crowd of around 55,000 spectators so far, and promises a thrilling weekend of golf.

Leading the pack are two Swedish players, Ludvig Åberg and Sebastian Söderberg, both at -10. Åberg and Söderberg impressed with rounds of 66 and 64 strokes respectively. The only player with a better score on Friday was defending champion Billy Horschel, who is back in contention after a quiet 75 in the opening round.

This year’s BMW PGA Championship is significant because it features twelve players from the European Ryder Cup Team, who will be facing the defending champions USA in Rome in two weeks. All twelve players are using the tournament as a final warm-up before the prestigious team competition. Alongside Åberg, Sepp Straka from Austria, chosen as a wild card by captain Luke Donald, has also shown excellent form, currently at -8 and tied for 7th place.

English golfer Tommy Fleetwood is also well positioned in front of the home crowd, at -9 and tied for 3rd place. Other contenders to watch include Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick from England, Jon Rahm from Spain, Viktor Hovland from Norway, and defending champion Shane Lowry from Ireland. They all have a shot at claiming the title on the West Course, which has seen exciting comebacks in the past.

Every player still has a chance to win a BMW vehicle at the 14th hole, with the first hole-in-one receiving the BMW i5, the first fully-electric BMW 5 Series in history. In line with the tournament’s commitment to environmental sustainability, BMW is also providing a fleet of 60 fully-electric Courtesy Cars for this year’s event, aligning with the “Green Drive” initiative of the DP World Tour. “Green Drive” aims to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon by 2040 at all tournaments worldwide.

Another highlight of the BMW PGA Championship is the Championship Village at the “Festival of Golf,” featuring live concerts. Since 2015, the tournament has included live performances, and this year is no exception. “DJ Locksmith” from Rudimental wowed the audience on Wednesday during the Celebrity Pro-Am, and on Saturday, “Jax Jones” will perform a genre-defining DJ set. The BMW PGA Championship will conclude on Sunday with a rocking performance by “The Wombats” from Liverpool, known for their hits “Moving to New York” and “Let’s Dance to Joy Division.”

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept: An Electric 2+2 GT

Lamborghini has revealed the Lamborghini Lanzador Concept, giving us a glimpse of what its first fully-electric model could look like. Unveiled at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the Lanzador is a two-door, high-riding four-seater that combines elements from Lamborghini’s current production cars. It aims to offer a sporty driving experience while capitalizing on the added ride height of the Urus SUV. The Lanzador will fill the gap between Lamborghini’s supercars and SUVs, positioning itself as the carmaker’s fourth product line.

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept

In addition to being Lamborghini’s first fully electric model, the Lanzador Concept showcases features that are expected to be seen in future production models. One of these features is the Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI), a driving dynamic control system that analyzes the owner’s driving style and adjusts various car parameters accordingly. The Lanzador also features the ALA (Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva) system for precise aerodynamic adjustments, allowing it to switch between high and low downforce modes. This electric GT draws inspiration from Lamborghini’s current lineup, with elements reminiscent of the Urus SUV and styling cues from the brand’s supercars.

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept

The Lanzador Concept is powered by two electric motors that deliver power to all four wheels. Specific details about horsepower and range have not been released yet, but the Lanzador benefits from technology found in the Urus, such as air suspension and rear axle steering. The concept draws inspiration from Lamborghini’s current lineup, borrowing design elements from the Urus and incorporating styling features from the brand’s supercars. The interior of the Lanzador features a spacious center console, minimalistic controls, and sustainable materials like recycled fibers, wool, and olive oil-tanned leather.

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept

Lamborghini aims to have its entire model lineup fully electrified by 2024. The Lanzador Concept is part of this strategy, and a production version is scheduled to go into production by 2028. While Lamborghini has not committed to a fully electric lineup, the addition of an electric GT will bring further diversity to the brand’s portfolio.

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept Debuts As An Electric 2+2 GT

Lamborghini previously announced that it planned for its first fully-electric model to go into production before 2030. Today the carmaker unveiled what its first EV could look like with the Lamborghini Lanzador Concept, presented at this year’s The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.

The Lanzador envisions a high-riding two-door four-seater with styling elements borrowed from multiple of its current production cars. As its form factor suggests, the Lanzador aims to capitalize on the added ride height of an Urus while maintaining a sportier driving experience. As such, it will position itself as a fourth product line for the carmaker, aiming to fill the GT-sized gap left between its supercars and SUV.

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept

Aside from previewing the first fully electric Lamborghini, the Lanzador aims to showcase features expected to reach production models in the coming years, starting with Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI), a driving dynamic control system. Its goal is to analyze its owner’s driving style and adapt various car parameters accordingly. It draws information from a new group of sensors placed throughout the car.

These sensors will also support its new ALA (Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva) system for more precise aerodynamic adjustments. Given that it’s electric, the Lanzador can cycle between high and low downforce modes, maximizing performance or range given the driving scenario. In the Lanzador, these aero elements include an active splitter, shutters in its front grille, and louvers in its wheel arches.

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept

Power comes from two electric motors, reaching all four wheels. Lamborghini has yet to publish how many horses it’ll develop or what range to expect from a production version. However, the carmaker’s electric GT does benefit from components found in the Urus, like its air suspension and rear axle steering. Given its stature, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Lanzador also inherited off-road modes like the Urus on the count of its adjustable suspension.

The Lanzador also draws inspiration from the carmaker’s current lineup from a visual perspective. Its front end, for example, is reminiscent of the Urus’ as is its roofline, while its slim lighting elements look closer to those found in Lamborghini’s supercar lineup. While the Lanzador seats four, it only features two doors, albeit very long, allowing it to retain a sportier aesthetic than a traditional GT.

Lamborghini Lanzador Concept

Inside, a sizable center console divides the driver and passenger, housing the few remaining mechanical buttons and switches. Two screens sit in front of the occupants, one serving as an instrument cluster and the other showing vehicle information and new entertainment features. The interior overall is very minimalistic, especially for a Lamborghini. Its steering wheel is thin and virtually button-free, while its slim seats offer minimal padding.

Since the Lanzador is an EV, Lamborghini also wants to implement more sustainable materials for its interior cabin featuring wool, recycled materials and 3D-printed recycled fibers. Its leather is tanned using a byproduct of the olive oil industry, a process that requires less water than traditional tanning but yields just as high-quality leather.

Lamborghini aims to fully electrify its model lineup by 2024. We’ve already seen this with the hybrid Revuelto, which will be followed shortly by the Huracan replacement and an updated Urus. The production GT the Lanzador envisions is already scheduled to enter production this decade, with an expected launch date of 2028. While Lamborghini has never said it will go fully electric, adding an EV to its lineup will further diversify its portfolio.

“Eight times five is 50”: Plant Dingolfing celebrates start of BMW i5 production during anniversary year

Dingolfing. The new BMW 5 Series, including the all-new fully-electric BMW i5, celebrated the official start of production today at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, in the presence of Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder. The site in Lower Bavaria, which is celebrating 50 years of BMW automotive production in 2023, has now ramped up its third fully-electric model in two years, following the BMW iX and BMW i7. Pure battery-electric vehicles’ share of total production at the BMW Group’s largest European manufacturing location is projected to increase to over 40 percent next year.

Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, explained in Dingolfing today: “The BMW i5 and our plant in Dingolfing are perfect examples of how the BMW Group is transforming itself for e-mobility and developing our plants on the road to the BMW iFACTORY. E-mobility is the new normal at our plants worldwide. Between 2021 and 2024, we will have integrated a total of 15 fully-electric vehicles into our production network.”

To achieve this, the BMW Group is relying on flexible architectures and offering most of its models to customers around the world with different drive train variants. The BMW 5 Series – like the BMW 7 Series and BMW X1 before it – will be available with a fully-electric drive train or internal combustion engine, or as a plug-in hybrid. This requires a high degree of flexibility, but allows the company to utilise its plants’ capacity efficiently and adjust its offering to customer demand. Nedeljković: “We are following the market. Customer requirements determine what the actual drive train mix looks like.” This has been made possible by extensive investments in the production network. The BMW Group has invested more than one billion euros in integrating the BMW iX, BMW 7 Series and BMW 5 Series at the Dingolfing vehicle plant.

As Dingolfing’s core model, BMW 5 Series injects new impetus

Over the next few years, Plant Director Christoph Schröder expects the launch of the new BMW 5 Series to boost the plant’s production numbers: “The BMW 5 Series has traditionally been Dingolfing’s core model and will provide valuable impetus for volumes again this time.” In 2022, more than 280,000 vehicles came off the assembly line at Plant Dingolfing. Over the coming year, with the start of production for the BMW 5 Series Touring and the eighth-generation BMW M5 models, Schröder expects that number to climb to well over 300,000 vehicles. Stefan Danner, Deputy Chairman of the Dingolfing Works Council, adds: “Along with the successful transition to e-mobility, the BMW 5 Series is central to long-term capacity utilisation at our plant, as well as securing jobs.”

50 years of BMW cars from Dingolfing

Of the roughly 12 million BMW vehicles built at the location to date, a total of eight million, i.e. two thirds, are BMW 5 Series models. This is closely tied to the history of Plant Dingolfing. Exactly 50 years ago, back in September 1973, the very first BMW car rolled off the production line at the new vehicle plant – a first-generation tangerine-coloured BMW 520i. Since then, the plant in Lower Bavaria has become one of the most prominent locations in the automotive industry – and an engine for economic development in the region. The annual wage bill for the more than 18,000 BMW employees in Dingolfing is over one billion euros, and the plant contracts with around 1,000 suppliers from Lower Bavaria. In addition to investing in the Dingolfing vehicle plant, the BMW Group has also channelled more than one billion euros into production of electric powertrain components at the location since 2015.

The vision of the BMW iFACTORY

As with the decision to build Plant Dingolfing during the oil crisis of the early 1970s, the entrepreneurial vision of the BMW Group is still very much in evidence at the site today. Thanks to extensive investment, Plant Dingolfing is extremely well equipped for the future – and the transition to the BMW iFACTORY is tangible. The best example of this development in the areas of “lean” and “digital” is winning the renowned Automotive Lean Production Award in 2022. The Technology Assembly was recognised for the rollout of intelligent camera systems for quality monitoring (AIQX), for example, as well as smart logistics solutions and the IT platform IPS-i for identification and localisation of objects. Last year, the plant also piloted Automated Driving In-Plant (AFW), deploying the new BMW 7 Series along routes between the assembly hall and the finish area. This is being rolled out on a larger scale with the launch of the new BMW 5 Series.

In the field of sustainability – the “green” aspect of the BMW iFACTORY – the site has stepped up its activities in different areas in recent years: from promoting biodiversity on plant grounds, to preventing and recycling waste so only around 600 grams of waste for disposal remain per vehicle produced, up to and including decarbonisation measures. In addition to sourcing green power, the location has also signed a far-reaching contract for the supply of locally-produced heat from regional biomass for heating purposes. This will meet around half the plant’s process hot water requirements from the middle of the decade onwards, reducing its CO2 emissions by 10-15% as a result.

Important decisions for the future

Nedeljković sees the recent investments in the transformation of Dingolfing and the other Bavarian plants as a firm commitment on the part of the BMW Group to Bavaria as a manufacturing location: “Nine out of ten BMW vehicles produced are sold to customers outside of Germany these days. Despite this, we still have more than half our employees here, especially in Bavaria – and, for all the internationalisation needed to achieve globally balanced growth, Bavaria remains an important pillar of the BMW Group and its production network.”

+++ Landmark vehicle is fully-electric BMW iX1 in Alpine White +++ Plant Director Carsten Regent: “BMW Group in Regensburg builds highly attractive electric vehicles for the premium compact class – BMW iX1 is very popular with customers around the world”

Regensburg. The BMW Group’s Regensburg location celebrated a significant production milestone as the one-millionth BMW X1 rolled off the assembly line. The milestone vehicle is a BMW iX1 electric vehicle (EV) in Alpine White. The BMW X1 is BMW’s smallest Sports Activity Vehicle and the first fully-electric model produced at the Regensburg location in November 2022.

“The BMW iX1 is proof that we can build highly attractive electric vehicles for the premium compact class at our plant in Regensburg. This is a very popular car with customers around the world,” says Plant Director Carsten Regent. “We have the flexibility to produce different types of drivetrain for the BMW X1 on a single production line – models with a combustion engine, plug-in hybrid systems, as well as a pure electric drivetrain, to meet different market requirements worldwide.”

The pure electric BMW iX1 xDrive30* from Regensburg topped this year’s readers’ choice for “Best Cars 2023” by the trade journal auto, motor und sport, securing best-in-class in the compact SUV segment. From the end of this year, the Regensburg plant will also produce the fully-electric BMW iX2 for the high-volume compact class.

The BMW Group will invest over 350 million euros in vehicle production in Regensburg by the end of the year, creating permanent jobs for around 500 new employees. The plant is currently operating at full capacity and plans to add an additional night shift and transition to three-shift operation in November. Up to 1,000 units of the BMW 1 Series, BMW X1, and BMW X2 models are produced daily at Plant Regensburg.

BMW Group Plant Regensburg recently became the first plant worldwide in the automotive industry to use an end-to-end digitalized and automated process for inspecting, processing, and marking painted vehicle surfaces, utilizing AI-controlled robots. The entire plant was digitally measured in 3D as part of a pilot project in 2022, enabling efficient planning of future plant structures and production facilities.

BMW Munich and FC Bayern München Basketball announce a long-term partnership for sustainable mobility.

BMW Munich and FC Bayern München Basketball GmbH have joined forces in a mobility partnership, which was officially launched on July 1, 2023. The collaboration aims to provide sustainable transportation solutions for the five-time German champions. At a joint press conference held at the BMW retail outlet in Munich, the partners emphasized their commitment to promoting electric mobility and supporting social initiatives in the local community.

During the event, Bernd Döpke, Head of BMW Munich, handed over the keys to two fully-electric BMW iX cars. One car was given to Marko Pešić, the general manager of FC Bayern München Basketball GmbH, and the other to guard Andreas Obst on behalf of the team. The initiative will enable the basketball players and coaching staff to travel emission-free in the Munich area.

Speaking at the press conference, Döpke highlighted the significant contribution of FC Bayern to the development of basketball in Munich, both nationally and internationally. He also emphasized the shared values of success, dynamism, and the joy of sports that are embodied by both BMW Munich and FC Bayern München Basketball.

Starting from the upcoming season, BMW Park, the home stadium of FC Bayern München Basketball, will become the new venue for home matches. The renaming ceremony took place with Pešić symbolically presenting the keys to Rudi-Sedlmayer Hall, which was constructed in 1972.

Expressing his excitement about the partnership, Pešić expressed his gratitude for BMW’s support and emphasized the advantages of being located in close proximity to the automotive giant. He also emphasized the common goals shared by the two prestigious brands. The partnership aims to solidify FC Bayern München Basketball’s position among the top teams in Europe and attract more fans to the sport. Additionally, the collaboration will extend beyond sports, as both partners are committed to launching and supporting social projects in Munich.

The first matches to be held at BMW Park are scheduled for September 16th and 17th, 2023, as part of a warm-up tournament. The inaugural home match in the BBL league will take place on September 29th, 2023, against the Mitteldeutscher Basketball Club. The joint social initiatives will also commence in the new season, with further details to be announced at a later date.
