Tata Tiago EV Is Faster Than These 10 Cars in the 0-100 KMPH Sprint

The Tata Tiago EV outperforms several cars with higher performance outputs

The Tata Tiago EV is one of the most affordable electric vehicles (EVs) available in India, priced between Rs 8.69 lakh and Rs 12.04 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes with two battery pack options: 19.2kWh and 24kWh, providing a range of up to 250 kms and 315 kms, respectively.

We recently tested the Tiago EV with the larger battery pack and an electric motor rated at 75PS and 114Nm. While its 0-100kmph acceleration times may not be extraordinary, this entry-level electric hatchback is still faster than several popular cars with similar or higher performance outputs.

Here is a list of these cars and their respective 0-100kmph acceleration times:

Tata Tiago EV – 13.43 seconds

Model

Tested Figures (0-100KMPH)

Toyota Glanza MT

13.54 seconds

Maruti XL6 AT

13.67 seconds

Maruti Grand Vitara AWD

13.99 seconds

Toyota Innova Crysta Diesel AT

14.11 seconds

Citroen C3

14.32 seconds

Mahindra Bolero Neo

15.13 seconds

Tata Tiago Petrol MT

15.29 seconds

Maruti Celerio AMT

15.77 seconds

Citroen eC3

16.36 seconds

Tata Altroz DCA

18.25 seconds

Key Takeaways:

  • The car closest in performance to the Tiago EV on this list is the Toyota Glanza, which features a 90PS 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Tiago EV’s win is particularly impressive considering that manual cars usually have a quicker launch.

  • The Maruti XL6 is approximately 0.2 seconds slower than the Tiago EV and is equipped with a 105PS 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

  • The Maruti Grand Vitara AWD comes with a 5-speed manual transmission and shares the same engine as the XL6.

  • The Toyota Innova Crysta is the most powerful car on the list, featuring a 150PS 2.4-litre diesel engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, the mentioned model is no longer available for sale as the diesel variant of the MPV only comes with a manual transmission now.

Citroen eC3

  • The Citroen C3 is almost a second slower than the Tiago EV, while its electric version lags by nearly 3 seconds. The electric version of the Citroen C3 is a direct competitor to the Tiago EV, offering less power at 57PS but more torque at 143Nm.

  • The only other diesel car on this list is the Mahindra Bolero Neo, equipped with a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Despite its 100PS power output and 260Nm torque, combined with a 5-speed manual transmission, it is still over a second slower than the Tiago EV in reaching 100kmph.

  • The petrol version of the Tata Tiago is around 1.5 seconds slower than its electric counterpart.

  • At the end of the list, we find the Maruti Celerio AMT. Despite having only 67PS and 98Nm from its 1-litre petrol engine, the Celerio is significantly lighter with a kerb weight of just 820kg.

  • A surprising inclusion on this list is the Tata Altroz DCA. It is equipped with the same 1.2-litre petrol engine as the petrol version of the Tiago, but in this case, it is mated to a refined 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. However, it is nearly 5 seconds slower in reaching 100kmph compared to the Tiago EV.

What makes the Tiago EV quicker?

The Tiago EV may not have impressive numbers on paper, but one of the biggest advantages of an electric powertrain is its instant performance delivery.

  • Unique suspension and steering calibration provide improved handling
  • A 10mm lower profile and styling upgrades help GSe models stand out on the road
  • Prices for Astra Sports Tourer GSe start from £43,250

Vauxhall is now accepting orders for the Astra Sports Tourer GSe, which is the electrified performance version of the Astra Sports Tourer. The starting price for the Astra Sports Tourer GSe is £43,250.

The GSe stands for Grand Sport Electric, which is Vauxhall’s new sub-brand for performance vehicles that combine electric power with sharp handling and stylish design. At launch, there are three GSe variants available: Grandland GSe, Astra GSe, and Astra Sports Tourer GSe. All three models feature unique styling upgrades both inside and outside, as well as powerful electric drivetrains and improved handling due to suspension and steering enhancements.

Orders are already open for the Grandland GSe and Astra GSe models.

Astra Sports Tourer GSe – electrified performance

The Plug-in Hybrid powertrain in the regular Astra Sports Tourer has been upgraded for the GSe variants. The Astra Sports Tourer GSe is equipped with a 180PS 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine connected to an 81.2kW (110PS) electric motor, resulting in a total power output of 225PS and a maximum torque of 360Nm. This is an increase from the standard Plug-in Hybrid variants, which have 180PS and 250Nm. These upgrades enable the Astra Sports Tourer GSe to accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 146mph.

The Astra Sports Tourer GSe is equipped with a 12.4kWh battery, offering up to 39 miles of pure electric range. With emissions as low as 26g/km CO2, the Astra Sports Tourer GSe qualifies for a Benefit-in-Kind rate of 12%.

Enhanced driving experience

Vauxhall engineers have made adjustments to the suspension of the Astra Sports Tourer GSe to improve handling. The car now features 11% stiffer springs and Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology by KONI, which adjusts the damping characteristics to provide a smooth and balanced ride.

The steering of the Astra Sports Tourer GSe has also been recalibrated to deliver a sportier feel and better feedback. The steering response has been increased by 9% compared to standard models, improving the on-centre feel and feedback at speed. Additionally, the Sport mode on GSe models has been adjusted to engage the electronic stability control (ESC) slightly later.

Distinctive design and features

The Astra Sports Tourer GSe has several styling upgrades to make it stand out on the road. The revised suspension and damping profile contribute to a 10mm lower profile, while the 18-inch ‘Commodore’ wheels give the car a unique stance. The car also features a black roof and black Griffin logos.

All Astra Sports Tourer GSe models come with IntelliLux adaptive LED® Pixel headlights and dark tinted rear windows.

Inside the car, there are Alcantara®-trimmed performance front seats that are certified by Germany’s AGR (Campaign for Healthier Backs), as well as a GSe-specific leather steering wheel. The car is equipped with a Multimedia Pure Panel Pro Navigation system that includes a 10-inch digital instrument display and a 10-inch touchscreen with Natural Voice Recognition. Other features include wireless smartphone charging and Intelli-HUD head-up display technology for an enhanced driving experience.

For improved safety and convenience, Astra Sports Tourer GSe models come with Intelli-Drive technology that includes Forward Collision Alert, Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Drowsiness Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Assistant, Cross Traffic and Side Blind Spot alert, and Automatic Speed Assistant with Stop Function. These features contribute to a safer driving experience for both the driver and passengers.

Best Electric Cars Of 2023

The BMW i4 M50 had a lot to meet the expectations. It had to offer the performance of an M-badged car, the practicality of a 4-Series Gran Coupe, and the smooth, refined experience that BMW EV buyers look for. It was a challenging task, but the i4 M50 successfully delivers on all aspects, making it one of the most satisfying BMWs to drive in recent times. Inspired by the M5, this car is surprisingly practical without compromising on performance. The front and rear seats are spacious, there’s a decent-sized trunk, and the cabin offers the luxurious BMW experience we know and love.

When you press the accelerator, the car feels even more powerful than the M440i, thanks to its dual electric motors that provide a surge of energy capable of lighting up the tires when the traction control is turned off. Whether you’re driving aggressively on winding roads or cruising on the highway, the i4 M50 handles remarkably well. And when it’s time to recharge, its support for 200 kW DC fast charging allows you to get back on the road quickly – assuming you can find a sufficiently powerful charger in the first place.

The only major drawback of the i4 M50 is its limited range, as it can only travel 227 miles between charges, whereas the regular i4 offers up to 301 miles. Aside from that, it excels in almost every aspect, making it an outstanding choice if you can live with the shorter range.

Performance program: Volkswagen brand aims to become more efficient and more profitable

Volkswagen is launching a global performance program called “ACCELERATE FORWARD | Road to 6.5” with the aim of improving the brand’s performance and profitability in the long term. The goal is to achieve a return on sales of 6.5 percent and improve earnings by around €10 billion by 2026. The program will focus on streamlining administrative processes, increasing efficiency in development and production, streamlining the model range, reducing the number of equipment variants, and improving product quality. The program will be managed by a Project Management Office (PMO) led by Stephan Wöllenstein and will be implemented in consultation with employee representatives, with a target completion date of October 2023.

The decision to launch the “ACCELERATE FORWARD | Road to 6.5” program by the VW Board of Management is a response to the challenging market environment and economic situation. The program is a top priority and aims to strengthen the Volkswagen brand and position it for future growth. The ambitious goal of achieving a sustainable return on sales of 6.5 percent by 2026 can be achieved through leveraging synergies, improving efficiency, and becoming more effective across all divisions of the company. Stephan Wöllenstein will manage the program and ensure its successful implementation.

The Management Board and Works Council have also agreed to work together on the common goals of profitability and job security. They are committed to achieving targeted savings without reducing wages or shedding jobs, focusing instead on areas such as Group management, brand cooperation, software development, and product quality. The workforce will be kept informed and involved throughout the process.

The “ACCELERATE FORWARD | Road to 6.5” program will be implemented through major action areas within the brand, including administration, technical development, material costs, products, price/mix, vehicle construction, sales, and quality. Additionally, flagship projects spanning multiple action areas will further increase efficiency and profitability. Examples include focusing on volume models, reducing complexity by eliminating lower-volume models, optimizing plant capacity utilization, and maximizing the potential of the Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB) and the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB).

The program will be managed by a lean Project Management Office (PMO) under the leadership of Stephan Wöllenstein. The Brand Board of Management will oversee the program, with individual members leading action areas and flagship projects. The program is expected to be fully implemented by October 2023, following consultation with employee representatives.

The Volume brand group, which includes Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, SEAT/CUPRA, and Škoda, will provide additional synergies and higher returns. Production within this group will be more focused on multi-brand plants and vehicle platforms, maximizing efficiencies and cost savings. The brands will also collaborate on selling expenses and overheads, further optimizing operations.
