Polestar Says More BST Performance Models Are Coming

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath is a bonafide automotive fanatic. He pushed to make the bottom Polestar 2 rear- as a substitute of front-wheel drive, and he’s shepherding the Polestar 5 four-door GT and Polestar 6 roadster into manufacturing. Ingenlath additionally helped flip the restricted BST Edition 270 and Edition 230 of the Polestar 2 into actuality. At the New York International Auto Show, Ingenlath confirmed to Motor1 that extra BST editions are on their method.

He didn’t present a timeline or specifics but, however the earlier BST version automobiles give us an thought of what to anticipate. Essentially decrease, stiffer suspension, stickier tires, and many styling tweaks to speak the automotive’s elevated efficiency. Both BST variations of the Polestar 2 had the identical 476 horsepower because the common dual-motor sedan, however paired that with stiffer springs, a decrease experience peak, distinctive Ohlins dampers, distinctive wheels, and a customized spec of Pirelli tire. Polestar made 270 examples of the BST 270 and—you guessed it—230 examples of the BST 230. Evidently, they had been obtained nicely sufficient to maintain the mission going.

While each the Polestar 3 and 4 had been delayed, Ingenlath says progress is sweet on the 5 sedan. He pulls out his cellphone to indicate us footage he posted to Instagram of pre-production automobiles rolling down the meeting line.

We additionally requested concerning the perceived slowdown of EV gross sales within the U.S., and he had an fascinating perspective on the scenario. He doesn’t assume individuals are souring on electrical automobiles. “It’s just simply a period in economic time where people, of course, are more cautious about a purchase decision,” he says. “That has to do with interest rates, it has to do with psychology, and Jesus, the world is not in an easy place…. For the first time, EVs [have] experienced an economic cycle.”

There’s additionally the truth that Polestar has completely different targets than different EV makers. “Let’s face it,” Ingenlath says, “we are not pitching for the million that Tesla is wanting to sell, we are not in competition with BYD. We are in competition with companies like BMW, Porsche and Mercedes.” He additionally argues that Polestar’s competitors extends past simply EVs—a Polestar 3, for instance, must tempt somebody out of a BMW X5, not simply an iX.

With Polestar 3 deliveries starting this summer season and Polestar 4 deliveries deliberate for the fourth quarter, it is a massive 12 months for the model within the US. Thankfully, each fashions are cheaper than initially anticipated, one thing Ingenlath credit to robust residuals for the Polestar 2. Still, 2024 is a make-or-break 12 months for Polestar. Hopefully it’ll succeed, and we’ll get some extra efficiency fashions.

6 Holiday Gift Ideas For Camping Enthusiasts

Unless your camping enthusiast friend or loved one is the kind of person who tries to camp totally tech-free, they’ll require a way to charge devices, power lights, and fans, and do anything else that requires electricity. But traditional gas-powered generators are noisy and smelly, ruining the pristine vibes of a camping excursion. Instead, the camper in your life will appreciate the quiet efficiency of an electric power station. It’s a simple concept — nothing more than a big battery with outlets and ports — that has transformative implications for their next camping trip. There’s also never been a better time to shop for electric generators. We’ve seen a wave of new products that aim to provide serious power with maximum portability.

If you want a gift that’s pure overkill, the Anker SOLIX F2000, has a 2,048 Wh capacity and outputs at 2,400 W. It can power a small household, yet it’s totally portable, with an extending handle and wheels. It can be connected to solar panels for totally renewable energy but also charges from an AC outlet. Around the outside are four regular outlets, a 30 Amp RV outlet, two cigarette lighter-style DC car outlets, two USB-C outlets, and two USB-A outlets.

For something that won’t break the bank quite as much, consider checking out the EcoFlow River 2 Pro, a power station the company rates with a 768Wh capacity and 800W of output. It’s still plenty of power for a camping expedition with four standard AC outlets, one DC outlet, three USB-A outlets, and a single 100W USB-C outlet. It’s also much lighter than the Anker, weighing 17.2 pounds.

2024 KTM 450XC-W: FULL TEST

KTM continues to dominate the off-road market with their aggressive and innovative approach. The 2024 KTM 450XC-W boasts a range of upgrades, including a new frame, suspension, engine, and improved handling. In comparison to its predecessor, the 2023 KTM 450XCF-W, this version is meaner, stiffer, and hungrier for action.

THE PUZZLE

The 450XCF-W is based on the 450SXF motocross platform, but with modifications to suit off-road riding. Notably, it features PDS rear suspension without linkage, which sets it apart from other bikes on the market. For the 2024 model, the PDS rear end is equipped with a straight-rate spring. The front end has been upgraded with a new coil-spring fork, similar to the one used in the motocross line. The engine has its own mapping with two options available through a handlebar switch, as well as traction control. Generating almost 58 horsepower, the 450XCF-W has been designed for improved center of gravity and possesses a 6-speed gearbox, hydraulic clutch, fuel injection, and a radiator fan.

CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION

The new hydro-formed frame is engineered to absorb harsh impacts, acting as a shock absorber. The shock mount has been relocated to minimize squat in the chassis. The subframe has been redesigned to be shorter, more compact, and lighter, integrating all electrical components.
The “W” range features CNC-machined triple clamps, which provide improved stability and control. However, these models no longer have rubber-mounted bar mounts or multiple mounting points. KTM has replaced the XPLOR fork with a new 48mm WP XACT closed-cartridge spring fork that offers off-road valving and adjustable compression and rebound without the need for tools.

The new shock mount design enhances the performance of the WP XPLOR PDS shock. It is now more compact, improves anti-squat behavior, and is fully adjustable using hand clickers. The swingarm has been redesigned using lightweight and durable die-cast aluminum, ensuring optimal stiffness and reliability at the lowest possible weight. To match the new chassis flex characteristics, a new 22mm rear axle has been incorporated.

The 2024 model features all-new bodywork, saddle, and fuel tank. The fuel tank has a capacity of 2.1 gallons and includes a one-piece fuel pump and filter, allowing for improved fuel supply. The slimmer bodywork improves rider mobility, while the redesigned seat offers better traction.

Additional improvements include a new chain guard and chain sliders, enhancing durability and reducing the chances of hooking on boots or external objects. The chain-adjustment markings are now visible from above for quick and easy adjustments. The new front fender incorporates mud fins to redirect dirt and mud away from the rider and radiators during wet conditions.

GETTING THE BUZZ ON

The engine in the KTM 450XCF-W offers incredible versatility. It delivers ample torque from low-end to midrange and offers a long and smooth top end. The bike features two engine maps that can be selected through a switch on the handlebar. The white map provides a linear and smooth power delivery, ideal for challenging terrain with loose rocks or slippery conditions. The green map, on the other hand, offers a more aggressive power delivery, capable of lifting the front wheel with ease. Traction control can be activated to provide better control and reduced spinning in the green map. The bike also features a Quickshifter, allowing for clutchless upshifting from second to sixth gear with the throttle wide open. The clutch still functions, but this feature is particularly useful for high-speed desert racing.

Notably, the clutch of the 2024 KTM 450XCF-W offers exceptional feel, engagement, and ease of use. The bike also delivers reduced vibrations, resulting in a more comfortable riding experience. The spark arrestor-equipped muffler produces a wonderfully quiet tone.

The new-generation chassis of the XCF-W models provides improved stability and control at higher speeds, which has been a weak point in previous PDS models. The bike’s turning radius is sufficient, and it handles tight trees with ease. The repositioned footrest mounts help prevent hooking on obstacles. The forged one-piece side stand is a neat addition, offering a sturdy footprint to prevent sinking into the ground. However, it is disappointing that the bike does not come with a skid plate to protect the new frame. The redesigned seat offers increased comfort and a wider base for the rider.

Overall, the new closed-cartridge XACT fork and shock greatly enhance the bike’s performance and versatility. The fork allows for easy adjustment of compression and rebound without the need for tools, resulting in improved rider comfort and confidence at high speeds. The fork also offers excellent performance on rough trails, with minimal deflection and absorption of trail obstacles. The new fork guards provide additional protection for the lower tubes. The XACT shock is lighter, more compact, and fully adjustable for compression and rebound. It helps keep the bike planted, resisting squatting under acceleration and providing a smooth and controlled ride.

MISCELLANEOUS BITS

The 2024 KTM 450XCF-W incorporates several new components and improvements. The redesigned fuel tank reduces the bike’s overall weight and features a capacity of 2.1 gallons. Up front, the radiators and plastic cap have been updated. The bike now includes an off-road control unit that eliminates fuses to simplify the electrical system. LED headlights have been introduced, allowing for night riding adventures. The Brembo hydraulics perform excellently, and the cooling fan is a useful feature for hotter rides.

The bike boasts a flush and smooth chainguide, preventing hang-ups and trail damage. The handlebars feature a combined start and stop button, freeing up space on the handlebar. Air-filter maintenance remains tool-free, with improved visibility of the air filter in the new airbox. The quick-disconnect fuel line has also been redesigned for better reliability. The bike comes equipped with Dunlop tires (MX33 in front and AT81 in the rear), offering exceptional performance in dry conditions.

AND, IN THE END…

The 2024 KTM 450XC-W is a highly versatile off-road bike, suitable for various riding styles. It excels as a trail bike but also offers the potential for dual-sport riding with minor registration adjustments. Additionally, it provides a great platform for desert racing, offering impressive power and a 6-speed gearbox. The improved suspension adds to the bike’s overall versatility, making it capable of handling challenging terrains with ease. Overall, the 450XC-W is an exceptional machine that delivers on all fronts.

The BMW 328 Roadster that Rowan Atkinson proudly owns was one of the most dominant racers in the 1930s. In 1937, the car won several races, including the Bucharest Grand Prix and GP des Frontieres. 1938 brought more success for the BMW 328, as it notched two Nurburgring victories and class wins at the Mille Miglia.

Driven by Walter Baumer and Huschke von Hanstein, the BMW 328 dominated the 1939 Mille Miglia. World War II prematurely ended the 328’s supremacy on track. Nevertheless, it made such a huge impact that it is considered an automotive legend.

The Lancia Thema 8.32 is one of the best sleeper cars of all time: nothing about the vehicle’s exterior suggests that it hides a Ferrari V-8 engine under the hood. The 8.32 Lancia didn’t make much sense – it was costlier than most of its competitors, and its detuned Ferrari engine couldn’t compete with the likes of the BMW M5. However, Lancia’s domination on the rally stage brought attention to the car company and its unusual car.

The 8.32 may not have been as fast, agile, or affordable as its rivals, but as a package, the Lancia stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Topping out at 243 MPH, the Gordon Murray-designed McLaren F1 certainly satisfied Atkinson’s craving for speed. Featuring a 6.1-liter V-12 engine that ran so hot the designers had to line the engine bay with heat-reflective gold, the McLaren F1 was a tarmac-ripping rocket ship.

Rowan Atkinson’s Phantom Drophead was extra special: a 9.0-liter V-16 engine lay under its massive hood. Atkinson petitioned Rolls-Royce to install an experimental engine in the Phantom for the film Johnny English Reborn. Rolls-Royce developed the engine for a project dubbed 100EX. It’s unclear which vehicle the manufacturer intended to pair with the V-16 engine. However, rumors suggest it was developed for the Phantom four-door sedan, not the Phantom Drophead.

Gran Turismo 7 Adds Three New Cars And The Ability To Swap Engines

In the latest update of Gran Turismo 7, three new enthusiast cars have been added: the 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, the 1971 Ford Maverick restomod by Greening Auto Company, and the 1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo. These new vehicles offer something for fans of every era to admire.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce is one of the automaker’s most famous and desirable sports cars. Despite its 105-horsepower engine, the car weighs only 2,100 pounds, resulting in an enjoyable driving experience. The updated version of the Giulia still maintains the same driving pleasure as its predecessor.

The Ford Maverick, although nowadays more well-known as a hot-selling small pickup, was the Blue Oval’s entry in the compact car class 50 years ago. Unlike its infamous Pinto sibling, the Maverick had some performance thanks to its available 4.9-liter V8 engine, which produced 210 horsepower.

However, the Greening Auto Company 1971 Maverick takes performance to a whole new level with its twin-turbocharged 7.0-liter Ford V8, generating a whopping 1,200 horsepower. This special Maverick, which won the “Best In Show” award at the 2018 SEMA GT Awards, reached a top speed of 202.6 mph in 2019 before being digitized for the game.

The 1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo was built to homologate a Group A racer. It features subtle yet significant modifications compared to the standard R32 GT-R, such as additional air inlets in the front bumper and removal of the rear windshield wiper and ABS. The car retains the same engine, suspension, and braking system as the non-Nismo GT-R but is about 80 pounds lighter, promising a more aggressive driving experience.

In addition to the new cars, the GT7 update now allows players to swap engines at GT Auto. However, this feature has limitations and can only be done with certain predetermined vehicle/engine combinations. Nonetheless, this update brings Gran Turismo closer to simulating real-world racing.
