Mercedes-AMG C63, E63 to Revert to V8 Engines for Future Models: Sources

According to a report from Car and Driver, future models of the Mercedes-AMG C63 and E63 are slated to reintroduce V8 engines. The information comes from two independent sources who claim that these vehicles will adopt a modified version of the M177 twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine by 2026.

Senior engineers working on the project have revealed that the C-Class and E-Class will undergo minor modifications to accommodate the V8 engine. This particular version of the engine is expected to meet EU7 emissions regulations and may also feature hybrid assistance, as suggested by the sources. When Motor1.com approached Mercedes for comment, the automaker declined to provide any confirmation or additional information regarding future products.

In June, Electric Vehicles Outsold Diesel Cars in Europe for the First Time

The diesel engine has been facing a decline in Europe ever since the scandal at the VW Group, and stricter emissions regulations are further contributing to its downfall. As a result, many automakers have stopped offering diesel engines in smaller cars. The latest sales numbers from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association confirm that the demand for diesel cars is on a downward trend.

Last month, in European Union countries, the market share for diesel cars decreased to 13.4 percent, down from 17.4 percent in June 2022. This decline in demand allowed electric vehicles to surpass diesel cars for the first time ever. Zero-emission cars accounted for 15.1 percent of the total market share, up from 10.7 percent in June 2022. Self-charging hybrids were also more popular than diesel cars, with a market share of 24.3 percent, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles represented 7.9 percent of total demand, slightly down from 8.2 percent in June 2022.

ACEA

Gasoline cars continue to dominate the market, accounting for more than a third of all sales at 36.3 percent. This translates to 379,067 cars, which is an 11 percent increase compared to June 2022. However, despite the increase in sales numbers, the market share for gasoline cars actually decreased from 38.5 percent to 36.3 percent due to the rise in popularity of electric vehicles.

Although diesel cars are losing favor in the European Union, there has been a significant boost in sales of diesel cars in Germany and Central European markets, with a 10.3 percent increase. In June 2023, Romania experienced the highest growth in diesel car sales compared to the same month last year, with a remarkable increase of 22.4 percent.

Overall, new car sales (across all powertrain types) in the EU increased by 17.9 percent during the first six months of 2023, reaching 5.4 million vehicles. However, this is still 21 percent lower compared to the same period in 2019, before the pandemic. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association highlights that supply chain disruptions are becoming less of an issue, although some models still have long wait times.

With the implementation of Euro 7 regulations in 2025, it is expected that automakers will accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, leading to a decrease in the availability of traditional internal combustion engine cars. The VW Group has already warned that B-segment cars may be at risk, as the stricter legislation may make it too expensive to adapt their engines to comply.

Starting from 2035, automakers operating in the EU will no longer be permitted to sell new cars that emit harmful emissions.

Discover How Honda Odyssey Performs With Additives Instead of Engine Oil

Engine oil is a crucial component for combustion engines, as it needs regular replacement to prevent potential disasters. Additives are designed to address different engine problems and improve the performance of the oil. But how effective are these additives when used without base oil? Garage54, a YouTube channel, recently conducted an experiment to find out.

The team selected a Honda Odyssey equipped with the automaker’s F23 engine, which was used in Honda vehicles during the 1990s and early 2000s. They drained the engine oil and then flushed the engine. Subsequently, they mixed various oil additives to create a concentrated mixture, forming an oily, greenish-brown substance that they poured directly into the engine.

Before replacing the oil with additives, the Odyssey’s engine was already experiencing issues. Smoke would billow from the tailpipe under heavy throttle. Unfortunately, the additives did not resolve the smoking problem and instead made it worse. As the van drove around town, the smoke changed from blue to gray, eventually leading to large puffs of black smoke accompanied by a loud bang from the exhaust pipe. Nevertheless, despite all the abuse, the Honda Odyssey survived the short test.

To measure any changes in the engine, the Garage54 team monitored the oil pressure in each cylinder. While two cylinders experienced a drop in oil pressure, one remained unchanged, and the fourth showed a slight increase. However, these changes were negligible, and the Honda Odyssey continued to perform without any issues during an extended overnight trip, totaling an additional 62 miles (100 kilometers).

Since the engine did not fail during the experiment, the team decided to reverse the process. They drained the additives, which had turned black, from the van and replaced them with fresh, thicker motor oil before taking the vehicle for another spin. Although the van still emitted smoke from the exhaust, using additives did not appear to cause any significant problems.

Anyone who has visited an auto parts store may have noticed the assortment of miracle fluids designed to prolong the lifespan of older vehicles. These fluids aim to enhance the positive aspects of the engine oil or counteract undesirable effects by modifying the oil’s formula. They can improve lubrication, adjust viscosity, and keep engine components free of harmful deposits and sludge, which could explain why the drained additives appeared dirty.

Maserati Ghibli 334 Ultima, Levante V8 Ultima Debut As Ferrari V8 Finale

After a long-standing partnership, Ferrari will no longer supply V8 engines to Maserati after 2023. This marks the end of an era for the trident badge, as Maserati has been producing eight-cylinder cars since 1959 and has sold over 100,000 V8-powered vehicles in the last six and a half decades. As a final farewell to the V8 engine, Maserati has introduced the Ghibli 334 Ultima sedan and Levante V8 Ultima SUV.

The Ghibli 334 Ultima and Levante V8 Ultima made their debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed. These limited edition models share the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine, which is capable of producing 572 horsepower, just like the range-topping Trofeo models. Maserati will only produce 103 units of each model, and to commemorate the occasion, they have added special cosmetic enhancements both inside and outside the vehicles.

Ford SuperVan 4.2: A Powerhouse with Over 1,400 HP for Pikes Peak Hill Climb

The Ford SuperVan is a series of high-performance vehicles that combine powerful engines with the brand’s commercial vans. With a history dating back to the early 1970s, the SuperVan is known for its impressive capabilities. This year, the fully electric Supervan 4.2 is set to compete in the 101st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with Romain Dumas as the driver.

The “4.2” in the name signifies that this version is an upgraded variant of the Supervan that made its debut at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. To enhance its performance on Pikes Peak’s challenging terrain, Ford has made several modifications to the Supervan 4.2. These include revising the aerodynamics to increase downforce, which contributes to better stability during the race’s 156 turns. The upgrades also include the addition of a carbon-fiber front splitter and rear spoiler. Moreover, efforts have been made to reduce the weight of the chassis, although the vehicle still weighs over 4,400 pounds.
