  • Hyundai released the Ioniq 5 in India at the 2023 Auto Expo.

  • It is the most expensive electric vehicle from Hyundai in India.

  • It has a 72.6 kWh battery pack, providing a claimed range of 631 km from its 217PS e-motor.

  • Features on board include dual 12.3-inch screens, six airbags, and ADAS.

  • It is locally assembled and is priced at Rs 45.95 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has almost completed a year in India since it was launched at the Auto Expo 2023 in January. It has now been revealed that the electric crossover has surpassed 1,000-unit sales in our market, achieving this milestone in less than five months after reaching the 500-unit mark in July 2023. Here’s a summary of the EV:

Most Expensive Hyundai Vehicle

When the Ioniq 5 was introduced in early 2023, it became both the priciest EV and car from Hyundai available in India. The electric crossover had received over 650 orders in less than two months since bookings were opened in December 2022.

Despite being the most expensive Hyundai here, local assembly means the Ioniq 5, priced at Rs 45.95 lakh (ex-showroom), offers great value for money. For context, the Kia EV6 RWD, which is the Ioniq 5’s direct competitor and is being imported here, starts at Rs 60.95 lakh (ex-showroom) due to additional taxes on completely built-up units (CBU).

**Takeaways**

![Hyundai Creta](https://stimg.cardekho.com/pwa/img/spacer3x2.png)

– The Hyundai Creta once again surpassed its segment rivals to bag the title of the ‘best-selling compact SUV’ in July 2023 sales with a little over 14,000 units sold. While it crossed its average-six-month sales numbers, its year-on-year (YoY) market share went down by nearly 20 percent.

– Mahindra retailed over 10,500 units of the Scorpio in July 2023, helping the SUV achieve a market share of more than 20 percent. Do note that the total sales number includes both models – Scorpio Classic and [Scorpio N](https://www.cardekho.com/mahindra/scorpio-n).

![2023 Kia Seltos](https://stimg.cardekho.com/pwa/img/spacer3x2.png)

– Thanks to the launch of its facelifted version, the Kia Seltos bounced back closer to its usual sales with month-on-month (MoM) increase of a whopping 172 percent. Its July sales stood just under 10,000 units.

– With slightly over 9,000 units sold, the Maruti Grand Vitara came close on the heels of the Kia SUV. Its drop in MoM performance meant it sold fewer than its average-six-month sales numbers.

![Toyota Hyryder](https://stimg.cardekho.com/pwa/img/spacer3x2.png)

– The Maruti SUV’s cousin, the Toyota Hyryder, stands a long way back with close to 3,400 units dispatched. Yet, its MoM number witnessed a positive movement by over 20 percent.

– Following the Toyota Hyryder were the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, with a difference of around only 500 units between them. That said, the market share of both the SUVs stood under 5 percent.

![MG Astor](https://stimg.cardekho.com/pwa/img/spacer3x2.png)

– The MG Astor remains the least popular as it didn’t manage to cross even the 1,000-unit mark in July sales. While its market share dropped below 2 percent, the compact SUV did do better than its average-six-month sales number.

Tata Tiago Has Achieved 500,000 Sales

Tata Tiago, the popular hatchback from Tata Motors, has reached an impressive milestone of crossing the 500,000 unit sales mark. This makes it the second Tata car to achieve this feat.

Tata Tiago

Tata Motors introduced the Tiago in 2016. Built on Tata’s X0 platform, the Tiago offered a range of in-house engines. It is manufactured at Tata’s Sanand facility in Gujarat, India. The Tiago also brought about a shift in Tata’s design philosophy, leading to the development of their current design language. Interestingly, the last 100,000 units were sold in just 15 months.

Tata Tiago NRG

In 2020, Tata launched a facelifted version of the Tiago with visual updates and compliance with the updated BS6 emission norms. Later, in 2021, Tata introduced the Tiago NRG, a crossover variant with additional features like external cladding, increased ground clearance, a new front bumper, and dual exhaust pipes. Responding to market demands, Tata further expanded the Tiago range in 2022 with the introduction of the Tiago iCNG and in 2023 with the launch of the Tiago EV, offering modern powertrain options and alternative fuel choices.

Tata Tiago EV

The Tiago’s growing popularity is reflected in the increasing number of customers opting for this hatchback. According to Tata, the average Tiago buyer is 35 years old, and the urban-rural split in sales is 60:40. Women customers are also showing a preference for the Tiago, accounting for 10 percent of the total buyers. Additionally, 71 percent of Tiago buyers in FY 2023 are purchasing their first car.

Tata Tiago Cabin

The Tiago offers a host of features, including projector headlamps, LED DRLs, 15-inch dual-tone alloys, a 7-inch touchscreen by Harman with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker sound system, and a digital instrument cluster.

In terms of safety, the Tata Tiago is considered the safest hatchback in its segment. It achieved a 4-star rating in crash tests conducted by the Global New Car Assessment Program under the Safer Cars for India initiative. The Tiago comes with dual airbags, parking camera with guidelines, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS with EBD and corner stability control, and speed-sensitive door locks.

Tata Tiago Engine

Powering the Tiago is a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 86 PS @ 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 3,300 rpm. With a manual transmission, Tata claims a fuel economy of 20.01 km/l, whereas the 5-speed AMT variant achieves 19.43 km/l. The Tiago also offers a CNG fuel option, providing a mileage of 26.49 km/kg. The Tiago iCNG is the most powerful CNG car in its segment and boasts segment-first features such as ‘Direct Start in CNG Mode’ and a single ECU to ensure minimal power loss when switching between petrol and CNG modes. It also includes features like Autofuel Switch Over, Thermal & Leak detection, and a Microswitch to prevent starting with an open fuel lid.

Tata Tiago Rear

The Tata Tiago’s popularity can be attributed to its updated design, well-equipped interiors, various powertrain options, and most importantly, its 4-star safety rating from GNCAP, making it one of the safest hatchbacks in India!
