Porsche 911 Celebrates 60 Years With Retro And Heritage Design Sneakers

Porsche is honoring the 60th anniversary of the legendary 911 by releasing a limited-edition pair of sneakers. Created in collaboration between Porsche Lifestyle Group and Puma, these sneakers pay tribute to both the classic and modern versions of the iconic 911. To mark this special occasion, a pre-sale event for the sneakers will take place on September 5.

The design of the Retro Sneaker draws inspiration from the slim and sleek silhouette of the 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.5. Made with suede overlays, it incorporates smooth leather underlays and a tongue adorned with red stitching. The light blue color of the sneakers is complemented by the presence of the number 56, which represents a significant car from that era.

Airstream and REI have joined forces once again to introduce the all-new 20-foot Special Edition Basecamp. With families, couples, and solo travelers in mind, the 20-foot model offers a larger floor plan compared to its predecessor. It features convertible living spaces, a mid-ship galley, an all-in-one wet bath, and incorporates sustainable design elements. With room for up to four sleepers, it is perfect for those who want to share their journeys with loved ones.

Gogoro and Muji Collaborate on Smart Scooters Made with Recycled Plastic Panels

Gogoro, a pioneer in electric mobility and battery swapping technology, has partnered with Japanese lifestyle brand Muji to develop special edition smart scooters and co-branded merchandise. This collaboration is part of the “Recycling for Good” initiative, which aims to recycle plastic waste.

The sustainability initiative focuses on reducing polypropylene plastic waste and incorporates recycled plastic body panels into the new electric scooters. The partnership between Gogoro and Muji has resulted in two new scooters: the Viva ME and the Viva Mix ME. Both scooters prioritize simplifying and electrifying urban mobility and were curated by Naoto Fukasawa, a renowned Japanese designer who has worked extensively with Muji. The scooters feature classic Muji design elements such as rustic colors, simple bodywork, and user-friendly design.

Gogoro and Muji Team Up On Smart Scooters With Recycled Plastic Panels

In the official press release, Naoto Fukasawa expressed that the most important aspect of design is maintaining integrity towards people, the environment, and life. He believes that the collaboration between Gogoro and Muji is a natural fit and brings about greater value than just the sum of its parts.

Gogoro, a Taiwanese electric mobility company, has a history of sustainability initiatives. In 2019, they introduced mass-produced recycled polypropylene plastics for their scooters’ body panels with the Gogoro 3 Smart Scooter. The entire range of Viva Smart Scooters also features these recycled body panels. It was this innovative manufacturing process that sparked the collaboration with Muji.

The “Recycling for Good” initiative aims to promote a lifestyle change that encourages people to be more aware of plastic waste. In Taiwan, the initiative encourages individuals to deposit their polypropylene waste at Muji and Gogoro outlets, where it will be processed and used in the production of these special edition scooters.

2023 Harley-Davidson X440 Officially Launched In India

For several months now, Harley-Davidson of India has been teasing its very first model in collaboration with Indian motorcycle manufacturer Hero MotoCorp. Dubbed the X440, this beginner-friendly motorcycle had the hopes of appealing to new riders, as well as those on a budget, by presenting itself as an approachable retro-style machine that doubles as a capable city slicker.

Now, Harley-Davidson and Hero MotoCorp have officially pulled the covers off the X440, revealing all the specs and details we’ve been so eagerly anticipating. Right off the bat, there will be three variants for the new X440 – Classic, Vivid, and Pinnacle, all of which built on the same foundations, but featuring varying styling cues and trim options. As for the price, the base model Classic retails for Rs 229,000 ($2,796 USD), while the mid-tier Vivid model will set you back Rs 249,000 ($3,040 USD). Lastly, the top-of-the-line Pinnacle model retails for Rs 269,000 ($3,284 USD).

As for the differentiating features among the three variants, well, the Classic variant is the most barebones of the lot, featuring spoked wheels and monotone colorways. It gets a blacked out engine, as well, which sort of conceal the cooling fins, giving the bike a slim look. Meanwhile, the Vivid version is fitted with alloy wheels and is finished in two-tone colorways. Meanwhile, the top-spec Pinnacle is equipped with two-tone alloy wheels, fancy color schemes complete with 3D decals, and machined cooling fins that give it a thoroughly premium aesthetic.

On the performance side of the equation, the X440 is powered by a 440cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected, single cylinder engine. It pumps out 27 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 26 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm, putting it squarely within the performance figures of other retro-style 400cc machines from the likes of Jawa and Royal Enfield. Power is likewise sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual transmission. Harley has thoughtfully added an assist slipper clutch for a smoother, more comfy ride.

Harley’s newest small-displacement roadster is equipped with robust and modern underpinnings which are designed to tackle India’s less-than-perfect road conditions. As such, it’s fitted with a 43-millimeter inverted front fork and gas-powered, preload-adjustable twin shocks at the rear. The bike comes to a stop with front and rear disc brakes with dual-channel ABS from Brembo subsidiary ByBre. Last but not least, the Harley X440 rolls on 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels shod in MRF Zapper Hyke tires.

Harley-Davidson has kept the tech package on the X440 pretty simple. Apart from dual-channel ABS, the cruiser has no other rider aids – no traction control, no rider modes. It does, however, feature a minimalist TFT display pod, and a full set of LED lights.

Internationally renowned artist Julie Mehretu to create 20th BMW Art Car

BMW has announced a collaboration with artist Julie Mehretu to create the 20th BMW Art Car. The announcement was made at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Mehretu, chosen by an international jury of museum directors and curators, will have total creative freedom to design the next addition to BMW’s collection of “rolling sculptures.” The BMW M Hybrid V8 Art Car, designed by Mehretu, will be entered into the 24 Hour race of Le Mans in June 2024. This tradition, which has been ongoing for almost 50 years, has brought together racing and art, appealing to fans of both and those interested in design, technology, and mobility. Previously, artists such as Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Cao Fei, and John Baldessari have created BMW Art Cars since 1975.

Julie Mehretu expressed her excitement about the project, stating that she has had a love for cars throughout her life and is thrilled to be working on the next BMW Art Car. She sees the opportunity to invent and explore new realms of transportation and motorsports through hybrid and fully electric vehicles.

Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, highlighted the importance of the BMW Art Car Collection as a central element of BMW’s cultural commitment. He expressed admiration for Julie Mehretu’s work and the cultural impact that the collaboration will have, particularly in Africa.

An artistic concept beyond the car: Translocal Media Workshop Series in 2025

The collaboration between BMW and Julie Mehretu extends beyond the Le Mans racetrack. Mehretu and Mehret Mandefro, co-founder of the Realness Institute, will host a series of workshops in eight African cities over nine months. The aim is to create a space for artists to meet, exchange ideas, and collaborate in translocal ways. The workshops will provide opportunities for artists to consider new pathways for civic futures in their local communities and harness the power of collective collaboration. The outcomes of the workshops will be presented alongside the 20th BMW Art Car at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town in 2025.

The artist: Julie Mehretu

Julie Mehretu, an internationally renowned artist, was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and currently runs a studio in New York. She has received numerous awards for her work and is known for her dynamic visual articulation of contemporary experience. Her paintings, prints, and drawings delve into the intersection of history, social behavior, and space. Mehretu’s work has been exhibited at prestigious museums around the world, including LACMA, the High Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Walker Museum of Art. In 2021, she became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Design.

Statements of the jury: Unanimous selection

The international jury responsible for selecting Julie Mehretu for the 20th BMW Art Car unanimously chose her based on her exceptional reputation and expertise in the art world. Members of the jury include prominent figures such as directors and curators from major museums and galleries. They praised Mehretu’s ability to capture movement, dynamism, and space in her work, making her the perfect artist to create a BMW Art Car that merges speed, technology, and artistic vision.

The BMW M Hybrid V8

The canvas for the 20th BMW Art Car is the BMW M Hybrid V8. This competition car features a hybrid drive system with approximately 640 horsepower, combining a 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor. The car can reach a maximum speed of up to 345 kph (215 mph) depending on the track layout. Weighing only 1,030 kilograms, the BMW M Hybrid V8 represents the epitome of M performance and the fascination with electrified drives. It competes in the GTP class of the North American IMSA endurance racing series and will also participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2024, including the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The BMW Art Car Collection

The BMW Art Car Collection started in 1975 when French racing driver Hervé Poulain asked his artist friend Alexander Calder to paint a BMW automobile. Since then, renowned artists from around the world, including Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Jeff Koons, have added their own touch to BMW Art Cars. The collection has been exhibited globally and resides at the BMW Museum in Munich. The collaboration with Julie Mehretu continues the tradition of combining art and racing, showcasing unique and visually striking designs on BMW vehicles.

Porsche Macan EV Teased In All-Electric Frauscher Boat Sketch

Porsche and Austrian shipyard Frauscher have announced a collaboration to create an all-electric, 28.4-foot sports boat that uses the same powertrain as the upcoming Macan EV. And as part of the announcement, the next-gen electric crossover has made an appearance in the official sketch released by the two companies.

Spy shots of the first-ever zero-emissions Macan are nothing new, as we’ve seen multiple mules, including during winter testing, but this new sketch gives us something fresh, at least in terms of design.

The digital drawing shows the new crossover from the side and by the looks of it, the rear seems to be much more raked than it is on the current-gen model, all while resembling the profile of the Panamera and Taycan.

The tail lights also seem to be similar to those of the Taycan, in the sense that it’s a continuous beam of red light that runs across the width of the car.

Specs-wise, we already knew that Porsche’s upcoming model will be underpinned by the new PPE architecture that uses 800-volt technology, as well as making use of a roughly 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. This has been confirmed once again in the official release that details the collaboration between the German car brand and the Austrian shipyard.

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air, which is based on the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air day cruiser, will integrate everything from the permanently excited synchronous electric motor and the 800-volt architecture to the high-voltage battery and related power electronics.
