Euro NCAP: larger, heavier SUVs current “safety concerns”

Euro NCAP has mentioned the rising recognition of SUVs presents a “safety concern” and that its personal security guidelines aren’t responsible for the rising measurement and weight of recent vehicles.

The Belgium-based security organisation has revealed security rankings for 11 new vehicles in its ultimate spherical of testing for 2023, seven of which have been SUVs: the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Kia EV9, Vinfast VF8, Xpeng G9, BYD Tang, BYD Seal-U and the Honda ZR-V. It additionally examined the BMW 5 Series, Volkswagen ID 7, Smart #3 and Hyundai Kona Electric, the latter two of that are crossovers.

The majority of the SUVs examined have been awarded 5 stars, however Euro NCAP recommended the pattern in the direction of “heavier, more powerful, and taller cars” dangers the security of different drivers and mentioned they’re extra damaging to the surroundings than smaller, lighter vehicles.

Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen mentioned: “For years, Euro NCAP was accused of pushing up the weight of cars. It was thought that additional safety features meant extra mass. That was never really the case, and the increase in vehicle weight we see nowadays is certainly not safety-related. It’s down to consumer preference for larger vehicles and to electrification, with ever bigger batteries being used to quell consumers’ range anxiety.”

Van Ratingen later went on to elucidate how this pattern “helps neither safety nor the environment”, with security issues rising from a collision state of affairs or when “vulnerable road users” are concerned.

Despite the issues, the newest crop of SUVs carried out nicely in NCAP’s exams. The top-ranking Mercedes EQE SUV scored nicely for its security help expertise however was let down by its central airbag system. The bigger Kia EV9 was awarded 5 stars on account of its protection of kid security gear.

Also attaining the goal outcome was the Smart #3, nevertheless it was famous that each passengers within the entrance seats made contact throughout a crash and the automobile wasn’t geared up with baby presence detection – a system that triggers a warning to the driving force if a toddler has been left unbuckled of their seat.

Another crossover on check was the second-generation Hyundai Kona Electric, which Euro NCAP mentioned was a “real disappointment” and “lucky to avoid three stars”. Its crash avoidance and driver help programs have been missing and did not characterize sufficient of an enchancment over the earlier Kona.

Also falling in need of the five-star mark was the Honda ZR-V. Despite being the lightest automobile on check, at 1589kg, it scored 4 stars.

Cars from each China and – for the primary time – Vietnam additionally featured. The BYD Tang, BYD Seal-U, and Xpeng G9 have been awarded 5 stars, with the G9 missing solely in pedestrian head safety and stomach safety for smaller occupants.

Global NCAP To Hand Over The Reins Of Crash Testing India-specific Cars To Bharat NCAP Starting 2024

The Global NCAP will continue to offer support and the technical know-how to the Bharat NCAP authorities

Global NCAP crash test

  • Bharat NCAP will start testing cars from October 1, 2023.

  • Global NCAP, started in 2011, launched a #SaferCarsForIndia campaign in 2014.

  • It has crash tested over 50 models so far, assigning scores ranging between 0 and full 5 stars.

  • Commendable performers include the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Punch and Skoda Kushaq.

We are sure every Indian, in the recent time, is brimming with pride as our country unlocked two important historical landmarks: Chandrayaan-3’s landing on the southern side of the moon (a world record) and the launch of Bharat NCAP (new car assessment program). Success in both the fields have been possible due to the technological advancements made in the respective industries.

Focussing on earthly progress, the Bharat NCAP is based on similar standards and protocols followed by the Global NCAP. As such, the global agency has shown its faith in the new Indian vehicle safety program by deciding to stop crash testing India-specific models starting 2024. The BNCAP will award safety ratings to every model sold specifically in our country, helping buyers pick the safest car perceivable to them.

What Led Global NCAP To This Decision?

In an interview with ET Auto, David Ward, executive president at Global NCAP, said, “There may be another 10 models that we’ve got in the pipeline but that will be it. We absolutely don’t want to be seen as a rival programme to Bharat NCAP. It’d be very confusing to the consumer, and it doesn’t serve anybody’s interests.

Bharat NCAP vs Global NCAP: Similarities And Differences Explained

The Bharat NCAP rules are in line with the global NCAP; however, there are some India-specific tweaks based on our road and driving conditions

Bharat NCAP vs Global NCAP

India has taken a significant step towards passenger safety with the introduction of the Bharat NCAP. Now, cars sold in India can be crash tested in the country to receive a safety rating. However, this rating system remains voluntary for manufacturers, who must still meet basic regulatory requirements to be road legal. The Bharat NCAP will be effective from October 2023.

Until now, crash-test ratings for cars made in India were awarded by the Global NCAP as part of the “Safer Cars For India” program. After 10 years of sharing safety ratings for new cars sold in India and observing a shift among buyers towards cars with higher ratings, the BNCAP used GNCAP standards and protocols to set its own benchmarks.

Which Parameters And Assessments Are Similar?

Both versions of the NCAP include the following tests:

Mahindra Thar frontal impact test

  • Frontal Impact: The front offset barrier tests are conducted at a speed of 64kmph to evaluate the impact on head, neck, chest, pelvis, and knee regions.
  • Side Pole Impact: The side pole impact test is performed at a speed of 29kmph, and a car must be equipped with six airbags to pass this test.
  • Side Barrier: At a speed of 50kmph, a barrier rams into the side of the car to evaluate the damage to the passengers.
  • Electronic Stability Control: ESC is an active safety feature that prevents tire skidding, and cars must be equipped with ESC as standard.
  • Pedestrian Compliant Front Design: Cars are mandated to have a pedestrian-friendly bumper and bonnet design to minimize pedestrian injury in case of an accident.

All cars must undergo and pass these tests for higher safety ratings.

The front offset tests will continue to be conducted at a speed of 64kmph, while the side barrier and pole tests will be performed at 50kmph and 29kmph, respectively. Similar to the GNCAP rules, the Bharat NCAP also considers the structural integrity of the car and its safety assist technologies.

Hyundai Exter six airbags

To achieve a 3-star safety rating or higher, cars must be equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control, and front-row seat belt reminders. Failure to include any of these features may result in a deduction of points in the assessment.

While following the procedures of the global NCAP, the Bharat NCAP will also include some India-specific modifications regarding the weightage given to individual parameters when deciding the final score.

What’s Different?

Since the Global NCAP is ahead of the newly introduced Bharat NCAP, there are some safety parameters not included in the latter at this time.

Kia Seltos rear seatbelts

One key difference is the mandate for rear seat belt reminders for higher safety ratings. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for the Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways, had previously stated that rear seat belt reminders would be compulsory, leading several manufacturers to update their cars with this feature.

While the tests are largely based on global NCAP guidelines, the government has also taken into account Indian driving conditions and roads.

Ratings Will Be On Show

Finally, all cars tested by the Bharat NCAP will carry a sticker displaying their adult and child safety rating. The model, variant name, and test year will also be mentioned on the sticker. Unlike promotional materials, this sticker is likely to be applied to cars that score lower than four stars from the BNCAP.

The government plans to keep updating the testing procedures. The crash test agency intends to add a rear crash impact protection test and the presence of select ADAS features (lane departure warning, brake assist, and autonomous emergency braking) as mandatory for evaluation.

Many manufacturers have already lined up for the Bharat NCAP crash test ratings. This move will encourage manufacturers to focus on passenger safety and reduce road accident fatalities. We expect to see several cars undergo crash tests once the system becomes effective in October 2023.

Bharat NCAP To Be Introduced Tomorrow: Here’s What To Expect

The Bharat NCAP will give a crash-test rating to new cars for both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection

Bharat NCAP crash tests

  • Bharat NCAP to be similar to the international new car assessment programs like Global NCAP and Latin NCAP.

  • Carmakers to send their cars, measuring up to 3.5 tonnes, for testing on a voluntary basis.

  • A new testing facility is also likely to have been set up to conduct these assessments.

  • A couple of Indian carmakers might even announce the Bharat NCAP ratings achieved by some of their cars.

If there’s one thing our automotive industry is yet to locally standardise, it is the crash test assessments. There are various international institutions and new car assessment programs (NCAPs) like the Global NCAP, Euro NCAP and even Latin NCAP which put new cars through stringent safety checks and give them both a score and a rating based on their performance. Reports of the Indian government planning our own NCAP (called the Bharat NCAP) surfaced online in early 2022. Now, it’s been confirmed that Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, will launch the Bharat NCAP on August 22, 2023.

What Could Be Announced?

We expect the Transport Ministry to reveal not just the details and parameters for the Bharat NCAP, but the newly set up Indian testing facility as well. We can also expect an Indian carmaker or two to announce the Bharat NCAP crash-tested ratings of either one or multiple models. The transport ministry is also likely to detail all the steps involved in its tests.

Aiming For Global Standards

Back in 2022, Union Minister Gadkari had said, “The testing protocol of Bharat NCAP shall be aligned with Global Crash Test Protocols factoring in the existing Indian regulations, allowing OEMs to get their vehicles tested at India’s own in-house testing facilities.”

Bharat NCAP Details

The new Indian crash-test assessment programme will measure the safety parameters of vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes or 3500kg. Carmakers can voluntarily get their cars tested under this programme, as per the proposed Automotive Industry Standards 197 (AIS-197) document. According to AIS-197, the Bharat NCAP will include the offset front impact test, side impact test and pole side impact test. The tests will award them with star ratings for adult occupant protection (AOP) and child occupant protection (COP).

2023 Kia Seltos rear seats

A previous government document had suggested that the ratings could include mandatory features such as six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, and advanced emergency braking system. So if these features are standard in the to-be-tested car, it might score better ratings.

Currently Mandated Safety Measures

For now, all cars in India are required to have dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking assist, front seatbelt reminder, and speed alert system. The government is already working on making six airbags a mandatory requirement on cars that can seat up to eight passengers. It is also looking at making select advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard.

Frontal Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the frontal impact, the driver and passenger got ‘good’ protection on the head and neck. Chest protection was ‘good’ for the passenger and ‘marginal’ for the driver. Knee and tibia protection for both was ‘good’ and both of the driver’s feet also got ‘good’ protection.

Side Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

Just like in the side impact test, the driver gets ‘good’ protection on the head, abdomen and pelvis, but protection on the chest was ‘marginal.’

Child Occupant Protection

In child occupant protection, the Taigun got 92 percent (45 points). Here is how it performed:

Frontal Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the frontal impact test, the child seats for both the 3-year-old and 18-month-old were installed facing the rear. In both cases, they were able to prevent head exposure and offered ‘good’ protection. For the younger child, the seat provided full protection.

Side Impact

Pedestrian Protection

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

The Volkswagen SUV scored 55 percent (26.47 points) in this aspect. Here, in most parameters, the Taigun got ‘good’, ‘marginal’ and ‘adequate’ protection. While protection on the lower leg was ‘good’, the upper leg protection was ‘weak’, which might be the reason for its low score.

Safety Assist

The Latin NCAP also tests the safety assist features of a car and the Taigun scored 83 percent (35.81 points). The SUV comes with seatbelt reminders for all passengers and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard. Although the Taigun does not get a full suite of ADAS features, the crash-tested model had autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as optional, thus meeting Latin NCAPs requirements.

Taigun In India

The India-spec Volkswagen Taigun comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC) and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) as standard. Depending on the upcoming regulations, it could also be updated to offer six airbags as standard. It is currently priced between Rs 11.62 lakh and Rs 19.46 lakh (ex-showroom).
