New York. The URBAN-X startup platform, supported by MINI, is expanding its MINI Impact Program in its second year to promote new ideas on sustainability. URBAN-X by MINI aims to support transformative climate technologies and find innovative solutions to tackle the toughest challenges faced by cities. A new tool has been developed to combat the growing problem of online car sales scams by helping buyers identify suspiciously low-priced adverts. Brego Advert Check is a free online tool that allows users to compare the advertised price of a used vehicle with its estimated dealer price and auction value. If the price seems too good to be true, buyers are advised to exercise caution and visit the dealer in person before proceeding with the purchase. The tool was created in response to a rising number of scams where buyers are tricked into paying a deposit or full payment for a non-existent car that has been intentionally underpriced. These fraudulent sellers are typically unwilling to accept credit card payments, leaving buyers empty-handed.
The co-founder of Brego, Simon Hunt, was motivated to develop the tool after seeing numerous reports of people falling victim to these scams. Hunt noted that the sophistication of the fraudsters indicated that their tactics were proving successful, and he felt compelled to take action. The Advert Check tool was designed within a few days, allowing buyers to input the registration number, mileage, and price of the vehicle they are interested in. They can also provide the website address of the seller, although this is optional. By comparing the selling price to Brego’s dealer price and auction value data, the tool determines the extent of the price discrepancy and informs the buyer accordingly.
BMW has upgraded the power output of the straight-six diesel engine in the X7 (xDrive40d) from 335bhp to 347bhp. This enhancement is not aimed at making the SUV faster, but rather at reducing its fuel consumption. The additional 12bhp is obtained from a new mild-hybrid system, which includes a crankshaft-mounted starter-generator on the eight-speed automatic gearbox and a small battery to store the charge.
The X7, BMW’s largest vehicle, has undergone a mid-life facelift. Compared to its newer sibling, the XM, the X7 is more focused on refined luxury rather than aggressive sportiness. This impressive feat is achieved thanks to the incredible torque of 516lb ft, available from as low as 1750rpm. The X7 also offers more powerful engine options, including a turbo petrol straight six with 375bhp (xDrive40i) and a twin-turbo petrol V8 with 523bhp (M60i xDrive). Although the petrol engines deliver more power, they are less fuel efficient than the diesel option.
The X7’s diesel engine, known as the ‘B57’, is surprisingly quiet and smooth, making it difficult to believe it is a diesel. Its refined delivery and performance match the overall character of the vehicle, which is comfortable and laid-back. Even with the M Sport specification and 21-inch wheels, the X7’s ride is not compromised. The only downside is the noise from the run-flat tires on rough roads.
Despite its massive size, the X7 handles well due to its wide chassis. However, its limits are limited by its width rather than any concerns about stopping power, as it is equipped with large brake discs and strong calipers.
The NHAI plans to increase taxes on road users to recover its debt
Traveling by road and between cities already costs a significant amount in terms of fuel and toll taxes. The NHAI has now decided to make highway journeys even more expensive by increasing the toll prices paid for road usage.
Reasons for High Toll Taxes
Reportedly, the NHAI has an outstanding debt of Rs 3.43 lakh crore, which it intends to recover through various methods. One of the primary approaches is increasing tolls on highways and expressways. With the construction of new highways and expressways, the collection of toll taxes will expand, helping the NHAI recover its debts more quickly.
According to an NHAI representative, toll taxes are set to increase by almost 10 percent each year for the next decade, leading to more expensive travel in the coming years.
Projections for 3 Major Expressways and Their Tolls
India has several national highways and a few expressways, with more in the works. Among these, three major expressways connect major cities across the country. Let’s calculate the tolls for these routes based on the NHAI’s plans.
Yamuna Expressway (Delhi – Agra): By FY 2023-24, the toll on this expressway for a car will be Rs 440 (one way). Assuming a 10 percent increase in taxes, the toll will reach Rs 484 in FY 2024-25 and could reach Rs 1140 after 10 years.
Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway (Mumbai – Pune): Currently, this car journey costs Rs 320. In the next financial year, it will rise to Rs 352, and after 10 years, it may cost Rs 830.
Delhi – Jaipur Expressway: For a car, the one-way toll on this route is currently Rs 305. After one year, it will increase to Rs 335, and in 10 years, it could be around Rs 790.
These tolls will particularly affect commercial vehicle drivers, such as truck drivers, who already pay higher fees than car users. This will result in increased logistics costs for various industries, which in turn will lead to higher prices for products. Thus, the rising toll rates will impact both highway travelers and the general public.
Other Methods of Debt Recovery
Although toll taxes will contribute significantly to debt recovery, they are not the only source of income for the NHAI. The organization can generate additional revenue by establishing more fuel pumps, electric vehicle charging stations, food courts, and other service-related infrastructure. This will benefit the public by improving infrastructure and increasing sales and rental income for the NHAI.
