FIA GT World Cup: Augusto Farfus Secures Podium Finish at Macau with BMW M4 GT3

Macau. Augusto Farfus (BRA) achieved yet another podium finish at the challenging Macau street race. Piloting the #11 BMW M4 GT3 for ROWE Racing, Farfus clinched third place in Sunday’s main race. Sheldon van der Linde (RSA) also showcased a strong performance in the #32 BMW M4 GT3 of the BMW M Team WRT during his Macau debut, finishing fifth in the qualification race on Saturday. However, a tire failure during the main race dashed his podium hopes. Farfus finished just ahead of him.

Farfus, a previous winner in Macau with the BMW M6 GT3 in 2018, exhibited remarkable tenacity throughout the weekend. Despite starting the qualification race in eighth position, he advanced to fourth place with impressive overtaking maneuvers on the narrow city circuit. Although he lost ground in a challenging duel at the start of the main race, he persisted and ultimately claimed a well-deserved third-place finish on the podium.

One of the drivers ahead of him, van der Linde, was poised for a podium finish but was hampered by a rear left tire failure. Nonetheless, he demonstrated his potential with a promising fifth place in qualifying and quickly adapted to the demanding track. The BMW M4 GT3 also made a successful Macau debut, securing a podium finish.

Reactions after the FIA GT World Cup:

Andreas Roos (Head of BMW M Motorsport): “We are pleased with the podium result in the debut of the BMW M4 GT3 at Macau. The competition at the FIA GT World Cup was fierce, and Augusto Farfus, with his wealth of experience, secured third place against top-notch rivals. Congratulations to him and the ROWE Racing team. Sheldon van der Linde’s tire damage was unfortunate. Despite his third-place potential, a tire failure cost him. Nevertheless, he can take pride in his performance. The BMW M4 GT3 once again demonstrated its competitiveness on international tracks. A big thank you to the drivers, teams, and BMW M Motorsport staff. We look forward to a return, striving for victory.”

Augusto Farfus (#11 BMW M4 GT3, ROWE Racing, Qualification Race: 4th place, Main Race: 3rd place): “This is a fantastic way to conclude the season. I am leaving Macau, a place that is very special and emotional to me, with a smile. I positioned myself on Saturday with a fourth-place finish to challenge for a podium spot in Sunday’s main race. Despite encountering limited space at the start and almost facing a collision, I approached the race methodically and hoped for a restart following a yellow flag. That opportunity arose, allowing me to gain a position. Unfortunately, Sheldon and Maro Engel encountered issues ahead of me, benefiting my position and ultimately leading to my third-place finish.”

Sheldon van der Linde (#32 BMW M4 GT3, BMW M Team WRT, Qualification Race: 5th place, Main Race: 16th place): “The conclusion is bittersweet. I was on track for a podium finish in my Macau debut, but unfortunately, it was not meant to be. When the tire pressure warning flashed, I initially hoped to reach the finish line, but it was futile. At the moment, my disappointment is profound, but I hope that will change tomorrow. Overall, it was an incredible experience. The Macau track immediately became one of my favorites, and I aim to return and secure a podium finish in the future. Congratulations to Augusto and ROWE Racing for third place!”

These 7 Cars Get Matte Colour Options From The Factory!

If you like a special finish for your special car, there are some brands in India that offer a matte finish from the factory and at a reasonable price

For those of us who see the car as more than a means of transport and see it as an extension of oneself, we want a car that stands out from the rest. Until recently, getting a distinctive paint job other than red, blue, white, or silver meant going to an aftermarket service. These days, more and more brands are offering a wider range of exterior finishes. But there are some brands that are taking that experience to another level by offering you something even more special – a matte paint job.

A flat matte finish comes across as a more premium option compared to the usual metallic finish which has more of a shine. In case you prefer a darker, more muted shade for your new car, here are 7 mass-market models available today that let you embrace your dark side:

Skoda Kushaq Matte Edition

Priced from Rs 16.19 lakh

Skoda Kushaq Matte Edition

The Kushaq Matte Edition was introduced in July 2023 and it is available with both 1-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine options with both automatic and manual transmissions. That said, the matte edition version of the Skoda compact SUV is limited to just 500 units, so only a few might still be up for grabs.

The limited-edition Skoda Kushaq variant gets a Carbon Steel paint in a matte finish, gloss black highlights on the door handles, ORVMs, and the rear spoiler. That said, some chrome has been retained by the company on the grille, tailgate, and window lining areas.

This variant recently brought back the 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system as well. It gets a Carbon Steel exterior paint in matte finish, gloss black outside mirrors, B-pillar, and door handles.

To maintain contrast, the front grille and window line are finished in a chrome finish. Meanwhile, the diamond-cut wheels help in the theme as well.

The Skoda Slavia matte edition is available with both turbo-petrol engines and all their transmission options.

Volkswagen Virtus GT Edge

Priced from Rs 17.62 lakh

Like its Skoda sedan sibling, the Volkswagen Virtus GT Edge Matte Edition arrived this October. It too is available with the same Carbon Steel exterior paint in matte finish. However, while the bookings have opened for the sedan, the deliveries are expected to commence in a few weeks. Volkswagen has said that only a limited number of this special variant would be made available to the customers on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The special matte exterior finish is limited to the Virtus GT variants. These are powered by a 150PS 1.5-litre TSI engine paired with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG Automatic.

Volkswagen Taigun GT Edge

Priced from Rs 18.56 lakh

Volkswagen Taigun Carbon Steel Grey Matte

The Volkswagen Taigun got its matte edition option earlier than the Virtus. The Taigun Matte Edition comes with the Carbon Steel paint, chrome highlights as well as red accents on the sides and both the bumpers.

Like the Virtus, Volkswagen offers the Taigun Matte Edition only on the top-end GT trims that use the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, with manual and automatic transmission options.

Kia X-Line Variants Of Sonet, Seltos and Carens

The feature list is based on the top-spec GT-Line variant. The X-Line models are finished in an Xclusive Matte Granite color.

Kia Sonet Gets The Matte Shade X Line Treatment

Kia Sonet X-Line: The front gets a piano black grille and blacked out front fascia. Other chrome/silver details on the Sonet X-line are the strips along the bottom of the doors and above the faux diffuser on the rear bumper. It comes with 16-inch crystal-cut dual-tone alloys with a gloss black outline.

The insides get an upholstery theme of Splendid Sage Green and Black with contrast red stitching. It is priced from Rs 13.89 lakh, offered with the 1-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel powertrains, but only with an automatic transmission.

Kia Seltos X-Line: The updated Seltos X-Line gets the same exterior and interior finish as the Sonet X-Line with the blacked out front fascia and piano black grille. However, the Seltos X-Line does not get any silver garnish along the sides or on the rear bumper. There are a lot more Sage Green sections inside the cabin. Kia offers the Seltos X-Line with the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engines, with the automatic transmissions only. However, here, the X-Line is not only based on the top-spec GT-Line variants and is available from Rs 19.60 lakh.

Kia Carens X-Line: The Kia Carens MPV is the newest from the lineup to get the X-Line treatment. Apart from the same Graphite matte exterior and green accents inside the cabin, the Carens X-Line is offered with a rear seat entertainment package as well. This infotainment unit can be controlled by the user’s mobile phone via an app. Here too, the matte exterior is limited to the automatic variants of the turbo-petrol and diesel engine options. It is based on the top-spec Luxury Plus (6-seater) variant priced from Rs 18.94 lakh.

While the Matte Edition cars offered by the various car makers are mechanically identical to the regular versions, the exterior visual treatment is a delight to owners and makes their ride stand apart from the others. The customers also get a chance to own a limited edition model that doesn’t cause a massive dent in the pockets.

Watch Loaded Semi Trucks Twist with Torque in Uphill Drag Racing Competition

Drag racing is all about crossing the finish line first. While we enjoy seeing high-performance supercars and hypercars achieve impressive quarter-mile times, speed isn’t everything. Big rig drag racing serves as a reminder that powerful engines don’t always translate into high speeds.

In Ohio, Kuhnle Motorsports Park recently hosted the inaugural Unc’s Semi Stampede, featuring big-rig competitors from various classes in a Quebec-style uphill drag race. While these racers may not be known for their speed, a new video captures the thrilling on-track action as dozens of semi trucks with loaded trailers race to reach the finish line first.

These trucks generate massive horsepower, but it’s the torque that steals the show in these races. Not to mention, the dramatic effect of copious amounts of black smoke. The A-Class trucks, equipped with 19-liter V8 diesel engines, produce enough torque to lift one of the front tires when they unleash their full power.

The weight of the trailers, which exceeds 100,000 pounds, combined with the high-powered engines, subjects the trucks to tremendous stress, resulting in visible twisting action. The slight incline of the track adds to the challenge, although the trucks do not have to cover as much distance as traditional supercars, as they compete on 700-foot tracks.

Big rig uphill drag racing is not a new phenomenon, but its popularity is growing in the US. For instance, Quebec, Canada, has been hosting an event called the Rodeo du Camion (Truck Rodeo) since 1981. This event, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022, attracts thousands of spectators annually and raises funds for the community. According to a 2019 report by TruckNews.com, the organization has collected $5.6 million between 1986 and 2019.

In the Unc’s Semi Stampede competition, A-Class trucks are required to be equipped with a 19-liter V8 diesel engine. They can have a maximum of two turbochargers, one injector per cylinder, and a fire extinguisher. The event also includes B and C Class competitors, each with their own set of rules. Notably, automatic transmissions were prohibited in the A and B classes.

IMSA: BMW M Team RLL celebrates 100th podium finish – GTD class win for Paul Miller Racing with the BMW M4 GT3.

The #25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 of Connor De Phillippi (USA) and Nick Yelloly (GBR) secured a third-place finish at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP, CAN), marking the team’s fourth podium of the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season and their 100th podium in history. Currently, De Phillippi and Yelloly are in second place in the GTP driver point standings, with BMW standing in second place in the GTP class manufacturer points.

The duo completed 119 laps, finishing 19 seconds behind the #60 Acura ARX-06. Yelloly started the race and pitted early for fuel only, putting them on a different strategy than their competitors. As the other cars made their pit stops, Yelloly cycled into the lead. De Phillippi took over on lap 55 and pitted for fuel only on lap 68. The race had three more cautions in the final one-hour-and-forty minutes, allowing De Phillippi to secure the third-place podium finish.

Augusto Farfus (BRA) and Philipp Eng (AUT) had a challenging race and finished eighth. They were stuck in the rear of the field for most of the race and both incurred drive-through penalties. Farfus and Eng currently stand in eighth place in the driver points, with their best finish of the season being fourth place at Long Beach in the #24 car.

In the GTD class, Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow (both USA) extended their GTD driver points lead by winning their third race of the season in the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3. Bill Auberlen and Chandler Hull (both USA) finished fifth in the Turner Motorsport #97 BMW M4 GT3. Unfortunately, the #96 BMW M4 GT3 of Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher (both USA) had to retire from the race due to collision damage.

The next race for GTD class BMWs will be at Lime Rock Park (USA) on July 22nd. The next race for the GTP class will take place at Road America (USA) on August 6th.

Quotes after the race:

Bobby Rahal (Team Principal BMW M Team RLL): “I’m really impressed. The guys with the #25 car pulled off a great strategy. We weren’t the fastest car by any means, and yet our strategy really worked out and Connor did a great job of staying ahead of everybody at the end. It just shows you that you can never count yourself out.”

Connor De Phillippi (#25 BMW M Hybrid V8, 3rd place): “Another podium for us in the #25 car, so it was a good day. Obviously, we didn’t have quite the pace that we needed, so the team tried a great strategy and with a little bit of luck, we managed to get up in the top three. So proud of everybody on the team to put us in this position and happy it all worked out today.”

Nick Yelloly (#25 BMW M Hybrid V8, 3rd place): “P3 here today was not expected to be honest. We really struggled all weekend with the car being quite difficult to drive particularly over the bumps at a track that we’ve not been to before, so this was as good as we could have hoped. Great job by the strategy team. Great job by Connor to obviously keep it on the black part.”

Augusto Farfus (#24 BMW M Hybrid V8, 8th place): “I think today we just tried to do the maximum with what we had. Unfortunately, we were not lucky with the strategy so then there was not much to do. So we take the lesson, take the mileage and focus on the next race.”

Philipp Eng (#24 BMW M Hybrid V8, 8th place): “Unfortunately, quite an unlucky race for us. The yellows didn’t work for our race. But on the flip side, anything can happen and we saw it again with the #25. They had a trouble-free race. They had good pace and finished on the podium, so many congratulations to the team.”
