Lamborghini Introduces SC63: Hybrid Racing Prototype for Endurance Racing

The LMDh car, SC63, has been unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It will compete in the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship racing programs.

Sant’Agata Bolognese/Goodwood, 13 July 2023 – Lamborghini Squadra Corse has unveiled its first hybrid endurance racing prototype, the SC63, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The SC63 will undergo testing and compete in the Hypercar class of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, including the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race, as well as in the GTP class of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship Endurance Cup, which features iconic races like the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring. Italian team Iron Lynx will partner with Lamborghini to run the car in international competition, and the team has signed top-tier drivers from Formula 1 and endurance racing.

The LMDh project is part of Lamborghini’s strategy for electrification, focusing on hybridizing the entire model range by the end of 2024 to enhance performance and driving experience. The SC63 embodies this approach in the motorsport program, becoming a new pillar of the Lamborghini Manifesto: Driving Humans Beyond.

“The SC63 is the most advanced racing car ever produced by Lamborghini, following our electrification roadmap ‘Direzione Cor Tauri’,” says Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “Competing in major endurance races with a hybrid prototype aligns with our vision for high-performance mobility, as demonstrated by the launch of the Revuelto road legal car. The SC63 LMDh represents a step into the highest echelons of motorsports and the future of Squadra Corse.”

The SC63 features an all-new 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 engine developed specifically by Lamborghini engineers for the racing program. It employs a ‘cold V’ configuration, where the turbos are mounted outside the vee angle of the engine for better cooling and servicing. This configuration also reduces the car’s weight and optimizes its center of gravity. Combined with a specially developed aerodynamic balance and attitude, this solution allows for excellent tire grip, balance, drivability, and consistent speed over both single laps and long-distance races.

Regulations restrict the power from the engine and the hybrid system, standardized across LMDh-category cars, to 500kW (680 CV). The Power Unit is managed by a Bosch electronic control unit. The LMDh rule set specifies standard gearbox, battery, and motor generator unit (MGU) to control development costs for the prototype.

Lamborghini engineers have leveraged their expertise in various aspects of the car’s design and performance. Despite a standardized gearbox for LMDh cars, customization is allowed, including gear ratio selection and mechanical differential slip. The monocoque for the SC63 is developed and built by renowned experts Ligier, with Lamborghini able to determine specific requirements such as the push rod front suspension design, weight distribution, and ease of service for critical components. The bellhousing, which connects the rear of the engine to the front of the gearbox, enhances torsional stiffness and houses the electric engine.

In terms of braking, the system must deliver high performance and reliability in all conditions. The challenge is to strike a balance between weight and durability, effective cooling, and the ability to accommodate different driving styles.

The exterior design of the SC63, created by Lamborghini’s Centro Stile design department in collaboration with the race design team, incorporates distinctive brand features, including the iconic y-shaped lights at the front and rear.

Team drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli, Daniil Kvyat, and Romain Grosjean have provided valuable input in tuning the LMDh system. The latter two have recent experience with hybrids in Formula 1 and have contributed to designing the steering wheel controls to enable the driver to manage the hybrid system effectively.

“Motorsport is a valuable and demanding proving ground for our technology,” says Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer. “Our LMDh car, the Lamborghini SC63, represents an exciting technical and human challenge. Developing our internal combustion engine, efficient aerodynamics, and overall technical package has pushed us to constantly raise our standards. Now, it’s time to hit the track and be ready to compete in the 2024 season. We also aim to transfer our learnings from motorsport to our future production cars whenever possible.”

The SC63 will run in a livery consistent with the branding seen on Lamborghini’s Huracán GT3 challenger. The cars will have a Verde Mantis green color with a black Nero Noctis strip over the cabin, front hood, carbon diffuser, rear fin, and wing. They will also feature the Italian Tricolore colors of green, white, and red, as well as the branding of Lamborghini’s long-time partner, Swiss watch manufacturer Roger Dubuis.

With its cooling layout greatly influencing the engineering and design, the SC63 incorporates eight radiators, including those for intercoolers, gearbox, air conditioning, Energy Recovery System (ERS), Energy Storage System (ESS), and water.

Due to regulations, there is only one allowed body kit configuration with limited changes between races. As a result, the design team has to consider worst-case scenarios, such as high ambient temperatures, and manage the thermal efficiency of the car at both IMSA and WEC circuits.

The SC63 has been designed and developed to provide optimal performance while ensuring tire preservation, even on demanding track surfaces. Prior to on-track testing, extensive development work has been conducted using a Driver in the Loop (DiL) simulator.

Starting in 2024, Lamborghini will enter one car in the full FIA World Endurance Championship and another in the North American Endurance Championship races of the IMSA series. Both cars will be run by the Iron Lynx team, which was introduced as a partner at the 2022 Lamborghini Grand Finals. The driving lineup will include Bortolotti, Caldarelli, Grosjean, and Kvyat, with more drivers to be announced later in 2023.

2024 Audi Q7 Rendering Gives a Sneak Peek of the SUV’s Upcoming Facelift

An updated version of the Audi Q7 is set to arrive for the 2024 model year. Over the past months, numerous camouflaged prototypes of the SUV have been spotted out in public, showcasing various design changes mostly at the front and rear. Our colleagues at Motor.es have taken some of these spy shots and created a digital rendition, providing an unofficial preview of what the new Q7 might look like.

Although this update doesn’t mark the introduction of an entirely new vehicle, it’s worth noting that the underlying structure of the current-generation Q7 remains unchanged despite its age of almost a decade. In the rapidly evolving landscape of SUVs, that might be considered quite old-fashioned. Nevertheless, Audi aims to make the most of the existing platform by giving the Q7 a refreshed appearance, characterized by a larger grille and smaller headlights.

2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz Introduces New XRT Trim with Stylish Upgrades

Hyundai is launching a new trim for the 2024 Santa Cruz. The automaker is replacing the SEL Premium grade with the rugged and stylish XRT trim. This trim has already been added to other Hyundai models such as the Palisade, Santa Fe, and Tucson.

The 2024 Santa Cruz XRT comes with several distinctive upgrades, including fender flares, side steps, bed rails, and lower door garnishes. It also features orange wheel center caps, black door handles, black mirror caps, and an XRT tailgate emblem. Additionally, it has a dark chrome grille and tailgate handle trim, matte black “Santa Cruz” tailgate lettering, and dark front and rear fascias, all of which enhance its visual appeal.

The new Santa Cruz XRT will be positioned below the Santa Cruz Limited in the lineup and builds upon the SEL with Activity Package. The interior boasts black H-Tex seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Under the hood, the Santa Cruz XRT features a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters and Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel-drive system. This powertrain delivers 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque.

In terms of color options, the 2024 Santa Cruz will offer the same palette as the 2023 model, including Sage Gray, Phantom Black, Blue Stone, Atlas White, Hampton Gray, and California Sand. LED projector headlights will come standard on all 2024 Santa Cruz models, while dual-zone automatic temperature control and auto defogger will be included on the SEL trim level and higher.

Every trim level of the Santa Cruz will also come equipped with steering wheel haptic feedback for the lane-keep assist and blind-spot collision-avoidance assist systems. Navigation will be available on the SEL with Activity Package grade and above.

Pricing details for the 2024 Santa Cruz have not been released yet. However, it is expected to have a slight increase compared to the SEL Premium trim it replaces, which starts at $38,935 (including the $1,335 destination charge). The Santa Cruz Limited trim currently costs $41,905. The XRT trim is also available on other Hyundai models, such as the Palisade.

The Santa Cruz has been performing well in sales, with a 10 percent increase in the first six months of 2023. Hyundai sold 20,050 Santa Cruz trucks so far this year. Ford’s sales figures for Q2 2023 have not been released, but the company reported 21,478 Maverick sales in the first three months of the year, and Q2 sales are expected to add to that number.

The 14 Different Body Styles Of The Ford Mustang

The current generation of the iconic Ford Mustang is coming to an end soon to make way for the 2024 models in a couple of months. While the next-gen pony car doesn’t seem much different than the current-gen, it’s unlikely there will not be as many options available to consumers. With the 2023 model year, there are an astounding 14 different variants to fill every niche from economically cool to awe-inspiring performance.

After decades of flirting with unusual body styles for the Mustang, Ford righted the ship in 2005 by getting back to the classic fastbacks of the originals. When they went from the fifth to the sixth generation in 2015, they didn’t mess with the formula and simply offered an updated, streamlined body style. The 2024 model year will mark the beginning of the seventh generation Mustang, but Ford isn’t going crazy with a radical new design, keeping it pretty close to what has been some very successful generations.

Unlike Chevrolet and Dodge who are abandoning the ICE muscle car business, Ford will still put gas-powered engines in Mustangs. They can do this in the age of EVs because they already have the all-electric Mustang Mach-E. While purists will claim the Mach-E isn’t a real Mustang, it’s badged as such, so it counts. With the Mach-E models, Ford has 14 different models to choose from and that’s a big win for consumers and Mustang fans.

Usually, a base model means a stripped-down version with no power or features, but the Mustang EcoBoost is packed with goodies. The most affordable pony car in the line-up has the reality-defying EcoBoost engine, which makes it seem like a mid-to-upper trim level. It comes standard with features that don’t exactly scream that it’s the entry-level Mustang.

With a leather wrapped steering wheel and parking brake handle, the interior has a touch of luxury. The Ford Sync infotainment system is paired with a six-speaker sound system and a rearview camera. The exterior looks just as great as any other Mustang in the stable, so this is an incredible value.

The next step up is the Mustang EcoBoost Premium, which has the same horsepower as the EcoBoost but offers some serious luxury upgrades. With leather seats, an upgraded Sync 3 infotainment system, and chrome accents throughout, this is a much slicker ride.

The premium trim comes with a Blade decklid spoiler and 18-inch aluminum wheels that give it some extra pop in the appearance department. The optional stripe package seems like a no-brainer because if you’re going to come up from the base, why not spend a few more bucks to make it really cool-looking?

The four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine is already impressive, but for around $6,000 more than the base model, it can be truly amazing. The Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Pack is the top trim for the 2023 EBs that squeezes some extra horsepower out and drops a few decimals from the 0-60 time.

As great as the EcoBoost is, Mustangs were made to have V-8s under the hood and that’s where the 2023 GT comes in. Equipped with a proper muscle car engine, the Mustang GT is the lowest trim with an eight-cylinder and is only available in the fastback couple body style.

Car and Driver recommends the GT as the top of the ’23’s because, “The Mustang is best enjoyed with its sonorous, 450-horsepower 5.0-liter V-8” and it strikes the perfect balance between performance and affordability. Then again, there are tons tempting of upgrade packages that could push it into the upper trim levels.

10 Mustang GT Premium

Much like how the EcoBoost Premium is an upgrade from the EcoBoost, the GT Premium is a more luxurious version of the GT. Packed with all the same interior and exterior upgrades, the GT Premium is for people who want a little more style with their speed.

The real importance of the Premium GT is that it’s the first trim available as a convertible that has a V-8. The power and speed of the Premium GT with a ragtop guarantee a bad hair day while at the same time a great driving day.

9 Mustang GT Performance Pack

At this point, the Ford pattern is clear: the base model offers standard thrills, the Premium adds luxury, and the Performance Pack loads up on the performance end. The Mustang GT Performance Pack is the top GT trim but doesn’t actually add anything to the 450-horsepower engine.

The GT Performance Pack is more about beefier Brembo brakes, a stiffer suspension, bigger wheels, and better tires. While this doesn’t technically make the Mustang more powerful on a dyno tester, in the real world, it helps keep the car stuck to the road, which is a speed-boost for less skilled drivers.

The Mach 1 was Ford’s performance package option until they killed it in 1978. It made a brief return in the early 2000s and then reemerged in 2021, hopefully for good. The 2023 Mach 1 is basically the GT Performance Pack minus the Premium luxury, plus more horsepower.

All that Mustang math adds up to a no-frills street monster that actually has some frills because the base models are decently equipped. Ford dropped a modified version of their signature 5.0-liter V-8 in the Mach 1 that puts out an extra 20 horsepower and makes for one seriously fast production model.

In addition to everything that comes with a normal Premium upgrade, the Mach 1 Premium gets cooler interior accents, a way better sound system, plus heated seats. At this point in the ascending ladder of 2023 Mustang trims, budget is becoming less of an issue so splurging on all the available extras is the way to go.

The Shelby GT500 is not just the most powerful Mustang Ford has ever built, it’s the fastest production vehicle the automaker has ever produced. It’s also the most expensive because this kind of ferocity isn’t cheap, nor should it be. Until it was knocked off its perch by the 2023 Dodge Demon 170, the GT500’s 10.6 quarter-mile was the fastest for an American Muscle car.

In addition to a bigger engine and all the features of the Premium and Performance packs, the GT500 comes with a rear wing spoiler and custom splitters to cut through the wind and stay glued to the track. Upon its initial release, MotorTrend called it a “Game changer” and, “the best all-around sports car available.”

5 Mustang Mach-E Select

A Mustang Mach-E doesn’t look like a Mustang or a Mach-anything, but Ford branded its all-electric crossover with these names, so like it or not, it is officially part of the fabled pony car’s history. Road & Track reported that Ford slapped the Mustang nameplate on this EV so it would stand out in the crowded electric vehicle market.

The Mustang Mach-E Select is the entry-level version of this new kind of Mustang. With EVs it’s all about power, battery size, and range, so since this is the base model, it’s obviously the slowest, shortest driving of the batch, but it’s still more than enough for most daily driving duties.

Car & Driver says, “We think the Premium model is the Mach-E to get.” The reason is simple, the Mustang Mach-E Premium strikes the perfect balance between power, range, luxury, and most importantly: price. Ford always has that one sweet ride buried in their vast array of trim levels and this is it for the pony EV.

While quicker and longer lasting than the Select, it also has a better fast-charging system, which is something anyone buying an EV should consider as it can be soul-crushing, waiting to “fill up” an all-electric if you’re in a hurry. Additionally, the Premium has 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a power lift gate, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Stepping up from the Premium is the Mach-E California Route 1, which has a bigger battery and more range. Available in either a single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, it can actually go a little further than the Premium, but its reported 312 miles is nowhere near enough to tackle the 655 miles of California’s historic Route 1.

The interior is sufficiently equipped with tech goodies like a 15.5 inch touchscreen infotainment system, a wireless charging pad, and USB ports. It’s also quite comfy with a heated steering wheel, memory driver’s seat, and carpeted floor mats. While it’s the top trim of the non-GT models, it doesn’t offer much more than the Premium.

While the standard Mach-Es are more than capable, the GTs get into the Tesla Model X Plaid levels of performance. The Mustang Mach-E GT comes standard with dual motor all-wheel drive and an extended-range battery pack, which adds up to a straight-line EV terror, capable of smoking all gas-powered Mustangs except the GT500.

Since this EV looks suspiciously similar to the Ford Escape plug-in hybrid, the Mustang Mach-E GT may be the ultimate sleeper ride, because no one will be able to guess how freakishly fast this thing is until they get their doors blown off. Yes, it is a little pricey, but no more expensive than other EVs with similar capabilities.

Just when you think you’ve hit the top of the trims, Ford always has another loaded up with a bit more luxury and performance. The Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition is the head of the class in both power and price. This package ups the torque from the standard GT, which in the case of EVs is instant and awesome.

The Performance Edition adds the MagnaRide magnetic damping system for an adjustable ride stiffness experience. It also has 20-inch wheels and racing seats for looking cool and staying in place, respectively. As is the case with any Ford upper trim levels, when you reach a certain point, why not just get it all? The Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition is the EV equivalent of the ICE Mustang Shelby GT500: it’s the best of the best.

2024 Ford Mustang Buyers Prefer Drift Brake and Automatic Transmissions

The delivery of the highly anticipated 2024 Ford Mustang is just around the corner. Despite being equipped with pure internal-combustion power, the seventh-generation pony car still offers a manual transmission for those who love shifting gears manually. Ford has recently updated its online Mustang configurator, providing more details and fresh photos of the car. This update also sheds light on the configuration choices made by early buyers.

The configurator was made available earlier this year, allowing customers to customize their 2024 Mustang. It was revealed that the top-tier configuration of the 2024 Mustang could cost up to $80,000. Now, with better descriptions and visuals of the available options, Ford has shared the percentages of equipment and features chosen by customers from January to June.

50 Percent Drift

One popular feature, especially among those who choose the four-cylinder EcoBoost models, is the new electronic drift brake. This feature is included with the High Performance Package, which has a 50 percent take rate. It’s important to note that the only transmission option for the 2024 Mustang EcoBoost is the 10-speed automatic. The manual transmission has been discontinued due to its low popularity, with only a 10 percent take rate in previous models.

27 Percent Shift

While the six-speed manual is still available for V8 Mustangs, its popularity has decreased in the seventh-generation model. Currently, 27 percent of early GT and Dark Horse orders opt for the manual transmission, while the remaining 73 percent choose the automatic transmission. Previous reports indicated that the manual transmission had a take rate of over 40 percent for the GT, but it seems the preference is shifting towards automatic transmissions in the new model.

Packages And Paint

Delving deeper into the statistics, Ford reveals that the Performance and Nite Pony packages are popular choices among 2024 Mustang buyers. The Performance package, which costs $4,995, has a 22 percent take rate among GT buyers. It adds several performance-enhancing features such as Brembo brakes, a Torsen differential, and various chassis and electronic system upgrades. On the other hand, the $1,195 Nite Pony package, which adds black exterior trims, is preferred by 26 percent of buyers.

As for color preferences, Shadow Black is the top choice for GT and EcoBoost models, with a take rate of 17 percent. Oxford White follows with 13 percent, while Rapid Red stands at 11 percent. The high-output Mustang Dark Horse sees Blue Ember as the most popular color, chosen by 39 percent of buyers. Vapor Blue and Shadow Black come in at 18 percent and 16 percent, respectively.
