Second Place Finish for BMW M Hybrid V8 in Dramatic IMSA Race at Watkins Glen

The BMW M Team RLL came close to securing their first victory with the BMW M Hybrid V8 at the 6-hour race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in Watkins Glen, USA. However, in a thrilling final phase, Connor De Phillippi, who was leading the race, lost time while lapping and had to settle for second place, behind the Porsche #6. Nonetheless, it was still a fantastic result for the #25 BMW M Hybrid V8, driven by De Phillippi and Nick Yelloly. The LMDh prototype demonstrated its potential to win the race on its own merits. In the GTD class, Paul Miller Racing secured a podium finish with the BMW M4 GT3 after a remarkable comeback.

In the GTP class, the two BMW M Hybrid V8 cars started the race from fifth and seventh positions due to the cancellation of qualifying caused by heavy rain. Unfortunately, in the very first turn, Augusto Farfus lost control of the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8 and crashed into the barriers, resulting in significant damage that prevented the car from being repaired during the race. Farfus and his teammate Philipp Eng were forced to retire early.

During the first hour of the race, De Phillippi collided with a spinning Cadillac, damaging the front of the #25 BMW M Hybrid V8, which had to be replaced. However, De Phillippi and Yelloly managed to fight their way back from the back of the GTP field with a strong pace and took the lead in the final hour of the race. Only in the last few minutes, as they encountered heavy traffic with lapped cars, did De Phillippi’s lead diminish. With just five minutes to go, he conceded to the charging Porsche. Despite missing out on victory, the #25 BMW M Hybrid V8 crew achieved their third podium finish of the season.

In the GTD class, Paul Miller Racing made an impressive comeback. After facing early technical issues with the #1 BMW M4 GT3, drivers Madison Snow, Bryan Sellers, and Corey Lewis fell three laps behind. However, they strategically utilized the yellow flag periods to make up the deficit and eventually finished in second place on the podium. In the GTD-PRO class, Bill Auberlen, Chandler Hull, and John Edwards were involved in a rollover incident five minutes before the end of the race. Luckily, Auberlen emerged uninjured. The incident led to a final yellow flag period that determined the outcome of the race. In the GTD class, the #96 BMW M4 GT3 driven by Robby Foley, Patrick Gallagher, and Michael Dinan finished in 13th place.

Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, expressed his excitement about the battle for the lead and congratulated the #25 BMW M Hybrid V8 team on their fantastic podium finish. Brandon Fry, Vice President of IMSA Operations and Technical Director BMW M Team RLL, noted that the team showed great potential to fight for wins and podium finishes this season with the BMW M Hybrid V8. Connor De Phillippi, who finished in second place, expressed his frustration at losing the victory so close to the finish but remained optimistic about the team’s progress and future success. Nick Yelloly, also finishing in second place, was pleased with the podium result and believed it boded well for the rest of the season. Augusto Farfus took responsibility for the accident and apologized to his teammate and the team.

34th BMW International Open: Lawrence wins after an exciting finish

Thriston Lawrence from South Africa emerged as the champion of the 34th BMW International Open at Golfclub München Eichenried. It was a thrilling final round, with Lawrence securing a one-shot lead with a brilliant birdie on the difficult 17th hole. Max Kieffer was the top German finisher, securing third place. The tournament attracted 51,500 visitors throughout the week and featured three hole-in-ones. Additionally, a total of 99,000 Euros were raised for the “Eagles for Education” initiative.

Lawrence recorded scores of 71, 69, 66, and 69 to finish the tournament at 13 under par (275 shots). His victory marks his fourth title on the DP World Tour. Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, People and Real Estate, Labour Relations Director, commended Lawrence for his impressive performance under challenging conditions on the Championship Course. Horstmeier also praised the exciting tournament week, which included 59 eagles and three hole-in-ones, resulting in the donation of 99,000 Euros for “Eagles for Education”. This initiative aims to promote equal opportunities and educational equality.

The BMW Group pledged to donate 1,000 Euros for every eagle scored during the BMW International Open. The funds raised were distributed to the “JOBLINGE” and “Kick ins Leben” organizations, with whom BMW has a longstanding partnership. In recognition of outstanding sporting achievements, BMW also made a 10,000 Euro donation for each hole-in-one. The “Eagles for Education” fundraising began with a 10,000 Euro donation from BMW on behalf of prominent players during the practice round, including Gareth Bale, Thomas Müller, Haotong Li, and Yannik Paul.

Starting the final round four shots behind Joost Luiten, Lawrence experienced a rollercoaster of a day. He recorded six birdies in the first 13 holes but also had five bogies. However, Lawrence finished strongly with birdies on the 15th and 17th holes. In contrast, Luiten managed only one birdie and three bogies, leaving him trailing Lawrence by one shot heading into the 18th hole. Despite a long birdie putt that had the potential to force a play-off, Luiten narrowly missed, allowing Lawrence to claim victory.

Reflecting on his win, Lawrence acknowledged Luiten’s struggles and his own consistent performance on the last four holes. He expressed pride in maintaining his composure and revealed that Ernie Els, the only previous South African winner of the BMW International Open, had been his idol and a significant influence on his career. Lawrence also mentioned the support he received from Els’ junior foundation.

Adrian Meronk, Rikuya Hoshino, Daniel Hillier, and Max Kieffer finished tied in third place at 11 under par. Kieffer, as the top German player, expressed disappointment at not seizing the opportunity for victory but praised the spectacular finish on holes 16, 17, and 18. He expressed his love for the BMW International Open and vowed to return in the future for another attempt at victory.

The best-placed amateur in the tournament was Jonas Baumgartner from GC Hösel, who finished tied in 52nd place. Baumgartner described making the cut as an amateur as a fantastic experience and emphasized the valuable lessons he learned throughout the week.

Thirteen German players, including two amateurs, successfully made the cut at the 34th BMW International Open. Marcel Schneider, Max Schmitt, Matti Schmid, Thomas Rosenmüller, Hurly Long, Velten Meyer, Marc Hammer, Jannik de Bruyn, Philipp Mejow, Michael Hirmer, and Marcel Siem were among the German contingent. Notably, a record-breaking 21 German players participated in the tournament.

Sheldon van der Linde and Schubert Motorsport Achieve DTM Podium Finish in Zandvoort

Zandvoort. The 2023 DTM season saw its first podium finish for the BMW M4 GT3, with Sheldon van der Linde and Schubert Motorsport securing second place in the first of two races in Zandvoort (NED). In the second race, Marco Wittmann from the Project 1 team fought hard for a podium spot but ultimately finished fourth by a narrow margin. Dries Vanthoor, standing in for René Rast at Schubert Motorsport, also had a solid performance, securing a top-ten finish in the opening race. This event took place at the dune circuit in Zandvoort, marking the second event of the season.

The weekend started well with a promising first qualifying session on Saturday morning. Van der Linde and Wittmann secured second and third fastest times, respectively, giving them good starting positions for race one. Vanthoor qualified 16th.

In race one, van der Linde posed the biggest challenge to Maro Engel, the eventual winner from the Mercedes team. Van der Linde’s impressive performance earned him second place, securing his first podium of the season. Wittmann initially stayed close to van der Linde but dropped two positions after the pit stop. He finished fifth, his best result of the season so far. Vanthoor showed determination, starting from 16th on the grid and finishing ninth in the #33 BMW M4 GT3.

The second qualifying session on Sunday was disrupted by two crashes, causing the remaining three minutes to become unpredictable. Wittmann qualified seventh for race two, Vanthoor 14th, and van der Linde had to settle for 17th position.

Wittmann and van der Linde demonstrated their skills in race two, thrilling spectators with daring overtakes and impressive comebacks. Wittmann fought his way to fifth place and climbed to fourth after the pit stop. He continued battling for a podium spot until the end, narrowly missing the top three. Nevertheless, fourth place was his best result of the season. Van der Linde climbed from 17th to tenth place. Unfortunately, Vanthoor had to retire due to a puncture caused by a collision at the start. The race was won by Ricardo Feller from Audi.

The third race weekend of the 2023 DTM will take place from 7th to 9th July at the Norisring (GER).

Reactions from the DTM weekend in Zandvoort:

Sheldon van der Linde (BMW M4 GT3, Schubert Motorsport): “I am thrilled to be back on the podium yesterday, which was definitely the highlight of our season so far. It was unexpected, which makes it even sweeter. This result puts us back in the championship mix, although it’s still early days. It demonstrates that we have a strong package and motivates us to strive for more podium finishes. I can’t wait for Norisring in two weeks.”

Marco Wittmann (BMW M4 GT3, Project 1): “It was a much better weekend for us compared to the season opener in Oschersleben. We collected some good points with fifth and fourth place finishes. As a new team, we need to keep working hard to challenge for podiums and be at the front. Our battles in the races showed that we have found a positive race pace with a great balance and setup. There are areas where we still need to improve, but overall, it was a step forward with two strong results. We fought hard and gave it our all.”

Dries Vanthoor (BMW M4 GT3, Schubert Motorsport): “Overall, it was a fun weekend, and I was delighted to make my DTM debut. While the results weren’t what we expected, we did our best to fine-tune the car for my performance. It’s challenging to join a different racing series and team and immediately deliver a good performance. However, we had a fantastic race yesterday, coming back from 16th to 9th. Unfortunately, today’s qualifying was disrupted, forcing us to start from the back. I suffered an early puncture due to a touch in the race, but that’s part of racing. I had a great time working with the team and enjoyed the weekend with Sheldon.”

See Abandoned Fox Body Ford Mustang Come To Life With Extreme Wash And Wax

In 1987, the Ford Mustang GT underwent some questionable styling choices that not everyone loved. However, the revised 5.0-liter V8 engine, which added 25 horsepower, made it an impressive choice for a relatively affordable and practical classic driver.

This white 1987 Ford Mustang GT convertible, according to M.A.D. Detailing, has been sitting outside for about 19 years, most likely under a tree, accumulating sap and twigs. The interior is also in poor condition, with grime on the doors and window switches, mildew on the carpet, and faded red cloth seats due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.

The first step in the restoration process is a thorough wash to remove the grime and dirt from the paint and wheels. Despite some wear around the edges, the white convertible top shines up nicely. Next, an iron eraser is applied to the paint’s clear coat to remove built-up iron particles and brighten the white paint.

Inside the car, the seats need to be removed. After 19 years outside, the interior likely has an unpleasant smell. Fortunately, there are no signs of rodents, so it didn’t become a “mini mouse mansion.” The faded carpet and upholstery are given a makeover by the M.A.D. Detailing crew. They wet down the upholstery and use a general-purpose upholstery cleaner and leather conditioner with a detail brush to remove stains. The dashboard and console, surprisingly, show no signs of cracking or warping despite years of sun exposure.

It’s important to note that the video advises caution when using chemicals and a steamer on an old, classic vehicle, as it’s easy to accidentally damage trim and upholstery. Steamers can be effective but can also melt plastic and vinyl. Taking the time to go slow and be careful is always better than having to fix a mistake later on.

Traffic Deaths In US Decreased in Q1 2023, down Approximately 3.3%: Report

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) anticipates a reduction in traffic fatalities for the year 2023. According to their estimates, there were approximately 9,330 deaths in the first quarter, indicating a 3.3% decline compared to the same period in 2022. This marks the fourth consecutive quarterly decrease following seven quarters of increasing fatalities since the third quarter of 2020.

Despite a 2.6% rise in the number of miles driven by vehicles, the estimated fatality rate for the first quarter of 2023 decreased to 1.24 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles, down from the projected rate of 1.32 in 2022. Similar to 2022, where the NHTSA reported a drop from 1.37 fatalities per 100 vehicle miles in 2021, this decrease indicates a positive trend in traffic safety.

Pete Buttigieg, the United States Transportation Secretary, expressed optimism about the ongoing decline in traffic deaths, which have been steadily decreasing since the peak of the pandemic. He emphasized the necessity of sustained efforts to solidify and continue this positive trend.

Ann Carlson, the NHTSA Chief Counsel, recognized the progress made but highlighted the persisting problem of preventable crashes. She underscored the agency’s dedication to reducing traffic fatalities through various initiatives, including the advancement of new vehicle standards, investment in infrastructure and roadway safety, and collaboration with state and local partners to promote safe driving decisions.

To address the issue of traffic fatalities and severe injuries, the Department of Transportation (DOT) introduced the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS), which adopts a safe system approach focusing on safer roads, individuals, vehicles, speeds, and post-crash care. This strategy is supported by unprecedented safety funding through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including the Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program.

The DOT has also implemented several initiatives to enhance roadway safety, such as proposing changes for advanced pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), upgrades to the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) with the introduction of a Pedestrian Protection Program, and regulations related to rear impact guards. Additionally, the DOT is gathering more data on crashes involving automated driving systems and advanced driver assistance systems. It is also conducting Vulnerable Road User Safety Assessments and establishing work groups to issue reports and advance roadway design models.

A recent two-year investigation conducted by the US Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General revealed shortcomings in the NHTSA’s handling of recalls and safety investigations. The investigation highlighted inconsistencies in documenting information and completing preliminary investigations within the organization’s target timelines.

Jeep Wrangler Owner Discovers Reliability is Better than Expected After Four Years

In the recent Initial Quality Study conducted by J.D. Power, Jeep has been ranked in the middle regarding reliability of brand-new cars. However, there is a popular belief that the company’s latest models are not as reliable as one would hope for.

Due to this perception, the person featured in the video was hesitant to purchase a Jeep, fearing that it would frequently require repairs. However, their spouse had a different opinion, resulting in the acquisition of a vibrant orange 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited.

This American off-roader, produced in October 2018, remained unsold at the dealership until September 2019. Humorously, it was believed that no one desired a Jeep that could be spotted from space by satellites. Ultimately, the vehicle ended up in the possession of the video presenter’s wife, who has not experienced any significant issues while driving it for over 40,000 miles. On average, she adds approximately 10,000 miles to the odometer every year.

Porsche Macan EV Teased In All-Electric Frauscher Boat Sketch

Porsche and Austrian shipyard Frauscher have announced a collaboration to create an all-electric, 28.4-foot sports boat that uses the same powertrain as the upcoming Macan EV. And as part of the announcement, the next-gen electric crossover has made an appearance in the official sketch released by the two companies.

Spy shots of the first-ever zero-emissions Macan are nothing new, as we’ve seen multiple mules, including during winter testing, but this new sketch gives us something fresh, at least in terms of design.

The digital drawing shows the new crossover from the side and by the looks of it, the rear seems to be much more raked than it is on the current-gen model, all while resembling the profile of the Panamera and Taycan.

The tail lights also seem to be similar to those of the Taycan, in the sense that it’s a continuous beam of red light that runs across the width of the car.

Specs-wise, we already knew that Porsche’s upcoming model will be underpinned by the new PPE architecture that uses 800-volt technology, as well as making use of a roughly 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. This has been confirmed once again in the official release that details the collaboration between the German car brand and the Austrian shipyard.

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air, which is based on the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air day cruiser, will integrate everything from the permanently excited synchronous electric motor and the 800-volt architecture to the high-voltage battery and related power electronics.

Maserati Confirms Long-Term Commitment To Formula E

Maserati recently held a roundtable discussion to talk about its performance and future in Formula E, reaffirming its long-term commitment to the sport. The discussion was led by Giovanni Tommaso Sgro, head of Maserati Corse, along with drivers Edoardo Mortara and Maximilian Günther. The team achieved its first victory in the sport at the 2023 Jakarta E-Prix, which was also Maserati’s first single-seater victory since 1957.

Prior to the race in Portland, OR, Sgro emphasized the importance of Maserati being the first Italian carmaker to compete in Formula E. This aligns with Maserati’s goal of offering electric versions of its cars by 2025 and transitioning to full electric by 2030. As a result, Maserati plans to stay in Formula E for the long term.

In addition to striving for high-level performance in a growing sport, Maserati recognizes the significance of its fanbase in Formula E. Sgro highlighted that the fanbase is not only comprised of traditional car enthusiasts but also includes a large number of tech enthusiasts. Maserati sees this as an opportunity to tap into a previously untapped customer base.

Maserati’s participation in Formula E allows it to reach a new audience while showcasing its electric vehicles, such as the recently released all-electric GT Folgore and upcoming EVs like the Grecale Folgore.

Although Maserati is committed to electrification and Formula E, it also plans to compete in other areas of motorsport. This includes the MC20 GT2, which was recently unveiled, and the limited production track-only Project 64. These endeavors demonstrate Maserati’s dedication to its racing heritage and long-term involvement in motorsport.

2023 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Review: A Fascinating Combination of Beauty and Power

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera has been a subject of fascination ever since its photos were first released in 2018. Its perfectly proportioned design, combining sportiness and elegance, continues to captivate car enthusiasts even after five years. Priced at $406,086, it is undeniably a stunning object of obsession that one might sometimes prefer to admire rather than drive.

One of the key attractions of the DBS Superleggera is its powerful 715-horsepower twin-turbocharged engine, which delivers supercar-level performance. Despite its impressive power, this grand tourer remains smooth and refined, making it ideal for long drives. Additionally, its rear axle provides a playful and surprisingly aggressive handling experience, surprising for a car of its size.

However, over the past five years, the interior of the DBS Superleggera has not aged well. While it boasts excellent materials, its outdated technology lags behind its competitors from Ferrari and Bentley. This raises the question of whether the combination of beauty and power is enough to justify its $406,086 price tag.

The exterior styling of the DBS Superleggera is a matter of personal preference, but its proportions are undeniably masterful. With a long hood, rear-biased seating position, and flowing roofline, it exudes an air of luxury and elegance. The carbon-fiber body panels, including the roof, clamshell-style hood, splitter, and rear spoiler, not only reduce weight but also enhance the sporty look of the car.

While its aerodynamic features, such as the air exits behind the front wheels and the double-diffuser at the rear, are subtle, they contribute to the distinctive appearance of the DBS Superleggera.

One of the highlights of the DBS Superleggera is its impressive powertrain. With its twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V12 engine generating 715 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque, it surpasses competitors like the Ferrari Roma and Bentley Continental GT Speed. It achieves a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 211 mph, thanks to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

However, the DBS Superleggera’s driving experience is not as immediate as its competitors. It behaves more like a muscle car, comfortably cruising at low revs and delivering explosive power in straight-line runs. While it can be less responsive in corners due to turbo lag, it compensates by providing an aggressive and thrilling experience when it wakes up.

The DBS Superleggera’s suspension consists of double wishbones at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear, with adaptive dampers. While its curb weight becomes evident in tight bends, it excels on open highways and city streets, providing a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. The cabin is well-insulated, allowing for effortless cruising, and the plush front seats strike a balance between sportiness and comfort.

Inside the DBS Superleggera, the seating position and visibility are well-designed for a driver of average height. The cabin feels spacious, especially with its two small rear seats. The overall design combines black leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber, creating a luxurious and sporty ambiance. The ergonomics are well-considered, with easy-to-reach controls and column-mounted shift paddles.

However, the interior tech of the DBS Superleggera is outdated, relying on an older Mercedes-Benz COMAND system. Its low-resolution graphics and lack of smartphone integration are disappointing, especially given the car’s high price. Aston Martin has made improvements in this area with the recent release of the DB12, but it will take time for those updates to reach the DBS Superleggera.

Considering the price, the DBS Superleggera offers a thrilling driving experience and a well-appointed cabin. Priced at $406,086, it includes additional features such as a Bang & Olufsen stereo, titanium sport exhaust, and carbon ceramic brakes. While the outdated interior tech may be a deal-breaker for some, the overall personality and charm of the DBS Superleggera make it an appealing choice.

Despite its flaws, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera remains a highly desirable car. Its timeless beauty and exhilarating performance make it stand out among its competitors. Priced at $406,086, it is undeniably expensive, but for those seeking a captivating and thrilling driving experience, the DBS Superleggera delivers.

Oceanco Project H: A 344-FT Superyacht Gets a Sustainable Makeover

The Oceanco Project H superyacht is a stunning creation that may appear to be a new build, with its newly-designed interior, modern exterior, and compliance with IMO Tier III standards. However, it is actually a renovation of a massive vessel that has been completely transformed into the pinnacle of luxury seafaring for the present and future.

The superyacht, measuring a staggering 344 feet, underwent a renovation with a contemporary exterior and an interior that were both redesigned by the renowned Reymond Langton Design studio. One of the remarkable aspects of this revived yacht is its commitment to sustainability, despite not being a newly-constructed vessel. This is of utmost importance in a time when sustainability is a paramount concern for yacht owners. The improvements made to an existing vessel can have just as much, if not more, positive impact than creating a new sustainable build. Therefore, the past should not be overlooked when it comes to shaping the future of luxury superyachts.
