10 Things That Make Modern Brough Superiors “Superior”

T.E. Lawrence, or the Lawrence of Arabia, owned seven Brough Superiors out of the 69 built before World War 2. This was not because Lawrence was a collector or George Brough’s best friend, but because Brough Superiors were considered the best motorcycles on the market at the time. Brough Superior produced some of the fastest, most exotic motorcycles at the time but was forced to shut down due to World War 2. However, the brand has been revived and remains committed to George Brough’s principles of producing exclusive, bespoke motorcycles.

Today, Brough Superior offers a range of motorcycles, including the legendary SS100 and AMB 001 / Pro, and each motorcycle is nothing less than art on two wheels. While there are more exclusive, expensive, and exhilarating motorcycles available today, none come close to the experience offered by Brough Superiors. The brand’s philosophy is to create the best motorcycles in the world. While it’s a debatable topic, it’s still worth taking a moment to admire these magnificent beauties and their unique features.

In order to give the most up-to-date and accurate information, the data used for this article was sourced from Brough Superior and other authoritative sources, including Motorcyclenews.com and Sons of Thunder by Neil Bradford.

10 The Ultimate Heritage Brand

Production Run Of The Original Brough Superior Brand: 1914 to 1940

Brough Superior

When you purchase a Brough Superior, you’re not just buying a motorcycle; you’re buying something more – a chance to experience the heritage of the brand. Established by Georges Brough in Nottingham, England in 1914, Brough Superior produced motorcycles till 1940. In such a short span, the brand had made a name for itself, becoming an exotic motorcycle that was ridden by racers and TE Lawrence. The brand was relaunched by Thierry Henriette and while it may no longer be a British brand, it offers the same charm as the older Brough Superiors.

Brough Superior Historical Facts

  • Between 1914 and 1940, Brough Superior only produced 69 machines
  • These motorcycles were sold at an average price of $207, equivalent to $9,300 in today’s money
  • The original SS100 held several world records set by racers like Georges Brough, Bert le Vack, Freddie Dixon, Ronald Storey, and Noel Pope

9 Conventions Are A Foreign Concept

Brough Superior respects its heritage through a non-conformist approach to motorcycles. Rather than establishing mass production, Georges Brough made tailored motorcycles that fit the riders’ size, weight, and preferences. Some claim that every Brough Superior SS100 came with a unique handlebar. Today, the brand continues to produce bespoke motorcycles in limited quantities, focusing on an artistic approach instead of the highest performance and top speed. The modern SS100 uses a titanium frame suspended on a Fior-type fork with titanium links, and the design is unlike any other motorcycle currently on sale.

Innovative Features On Brough Superior Motorcycles

  • Titanium chassis
  • Quad-disc brakes
  • Fior double-fork suspension
  • CNC-machined aluminum components
  • Turbocharged V-twin engine (AMB 001 and AMB 001 Pro)

8 And The Design Is Mind Blowing, To Say The Least

Brough Superior

The Brough Superior SS100 is a marvel to behold, along with the AMB001 and AMB001 Pro. Georges Brough is known as one of the best motorcycle designers ever for his SS100 design back in the day. Even today, Brough Superior motorcycles feature the same silhouette as the SS100, with innovative components and a sublime V-twin engine underneath. The most modern motorcycle, the AMB 001, looks unlike anything else on the market. Its design philosophy screams purpose, and while it may polarize some onlookers, there’s no denying that Brough Superior and Aston Martin have nailed the design of the AMB001.

Notable Design Elements

  • Polished alloy fuel tank, which takes 35 hours to complete
  • Beringer quad disc brakes at the front to mimic the look of the original SS100’s drum brakes
  • A hand-stitched leather saddle featuring a plaque of the craftsmen who assembled the engine and bike
  • A big, analog speedometer inspired by the original SS100
  • High-slung dual exhausts polished in chrome

While exclusive motorcycles like the Ducati Superleggera V4, Aprilia Tuono V4 X, and Bimota Tesi H2 are incredible machines, they don’t hold a candle to the exclusivity of Brough Superior. Even the most common Brough Superior SS100 is only limited to 300 units, and these bikes are collectibles, likely to appreciate in value with time. Each Brough Superior comes with some level of customization, making it safe to say that no two Brough Superiors are identical.

Brough Superior motorcycles are compared to Rolls-Royce, and for good reason. The motorcycles are built with top-notch quality materials and assembled with meticulous attention to detail, just like modern Rolls-Royce cars. Despite this attention to detail, the Brough Superior SS100 still offers modern handling character and performance.

I enjoyed competing against Jett in the 250 class before he moved up, and I look forward to doing it again now that we’re both on the big bikes. I have an exceptional team supporting me, and I can’t wait to get back in action at Anaheim 1.”

Brandon Wilson, the Manager of Racing and Experiential Marketing at American Honda, expressed his pleasure in promoting Hunter to the CRF450RWE. He mentioned that Hunter not only has a track record of achieving positive results but also brings a constructive and optimistic influence to the team. Wilson looks forward to seeing Hunter build on his success now that he is in the premier class.

SUPERMOTOCROSS PLAYOFFS, ROUND 2 RESULTS

Jett and Hunter Lawrence dominated the second round of the Supermotocross Playoff Series, which took place at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. The Lawrence brothers showcased their skills in a faster venue compared to the previous race in North Carolina. In the 450 class, Jett won the first moto but strategically allowed Ken Roczen to take the lead in the second moto, with the intention of placing series rival Chase Sexton further back in the overall standings. However, this move had no impact on the final results, which ended with Lawrence in first place, followed by Roczen and Sexton. In the 250 class, Hunter Lawrence secured victories in both motos, despite strong performances from Jo Shimoda and Haiden Deegan. For more 2023 Pro Motocross results, click here.

2023 BUDDS CREEK NATIONAL MX RESULTS

The Lawrence brothers showcased their skills once again at Budds Creek in Maryland. Despite a poor start in moto one, Jett Lawrence dominated the 450 class with a 1-1 finish. Chase Sexton struggled with multiple crashes throughout the day, showing that he can match Jett’s speed but lacking consistency. In the 250 class, Hunter Lawrence had a fierce battle with Justin Cooper, resulting in a tie in moto wins. However, Hunter emerged as the overall winner due to his victory in the second moto. The 250 title will be decided in the final round in Indiana next week, and Haiden Deegan has been officially eliminated from contention. Deegan had a challenging weekend, as he was leading moto one when a red flag forced a restart, and he crashed before reaching the first turn. 2023 UNADILLA NATIONAL MX RESULTS: JETT CLINCHES!

Jett Lawrence secured the 2023 450 National Motocross Championship at Unadilla this week and remains undefeated in his rookie season with two races left. The first moto could have had a different outcome, though, as both Chase Sexton and Dylan Ferrandis showed that they were able to keep up with Jett’s speed and possibly cause an upset. However, as we have seen numerous times this season, Chase had a crash, and Dylan’s charge came too late. In the 250 class, Hunter Lawrence claimed his sixth overall victory of the season with a 2-2 score. Although Levi Kitchen and Justin Cooper both won individual motos, they were unable to sustain their performance. Haiden Deegan was performing well in moto one but unfortunately broke his Yamaha and did not finish. For more comprehensive coverage of the 2023 Pro Motocross season, click here.

2023 MILLVILLE NATIONAL MX RESULTS

The Lawrence brothers–both of them–returned to the top step of the podium in their respective classes this week at Spring Creek Raceway in Millville Minnesota. For both, it was a little harder than usual. In the 450 class, Jett faced tough competition from Chase Sexton, who led both motos. Jett managed to stay upright while Sexton hit the ground several times, allowing Jett to take the win. In the 250 class, it was Hunter’s turn to face some challenges. After an impressive performance in the first race, Hunter fell while leading in moto two, giving the second-moto win to Justin Cooper. However, Hunter still managed to secure the overall win with a 1-2 score and regain the red plate as the points leader. For more coverage of the 2023 Pro Motocross season, click here.

Aston Martin DB12

Aston Martin chairman Lawrence Stroll’s comment calling the DB11 “slow” seems to have been taken to heart by the engineers. The result is the DB12, a brutally fast car that leans more towards the DBS in terms of speed. The response is almost instantaneous at any speed, and the eight-speed automatic transmission matches the engine perfectly, giving it a super tourer positioning. The gearshifts are crisp and precise, although not as savage as a dual-clutch auto. The engine sounds epic, but not as deafening as Aston’s V12.

We got the chance to drive the DB12 on two fantastic roads in France: the Route Napoléon and the Col de Vence. The former is filled with hairpin turns and second-gear corners, while the latter has faster third-gear turns. The DB12 handles better on the Col de Vence, providing superb body control, stable handling, and plenty of grip. It feels stiffer than the 7% improvement figure suggests, making it an exhilarating sports car in higher-speed corners. You can’t help but crave the next corner as soon as you’ve finished one. However, the DB12 can feel a bit frustrated at lower speeds, with its size becoming apparent and the diff and transmission calibration not quite delivering the same thrills in slower-speed corners. There is definitely room for the more agile Vantage below the DB12, even considering its more sporting positioning.

One of the most transformative aspects of the DB12 is its ride comfort, particularly noticeable around town. Aston wasn’t exaggerating when they said the dampers’ ability had increased. Although you do need to be careful with how you position the car, the low-speed refinement and comfort make you forget you’re driving such a sporty and powerful vehicle. It’s not intimidating at all. While our test route didn’t include many motorway miles, the DB12 seemed impressively comfortable on longer journeys as well.

After a day of driving, however, there were still some control issues that could be improved. Credit to Aston for not relying solely on the touchscreen, but the mix of physical and digital controls gives it a first-generation layout feel. More refinements in usability are planned, with seven more front-engined sports cars, including derivatives, set to follow the DB12 in the next two years. Nevertheless, the perceived quality, technology, and comfort of the DB12 have seen significant improvements, successfully addressing the biggest shortcoming of the DB11.

Aston Martin Chairman Lawrence Stroll Believes He Should Be Knighted for Saving the Company

Lawrence Stroll, the executive chairman of Aston Martin’s road car business and owner of the Formula 1 team, believes that he deserves to be knighted for his efforts in saving the company and setting it up for future success.

In a media interview before the firm’s capital markets day, Stroll expressed his belief that he should be recognized for his achievements. He stated, “I should be knighted for what I’ve done. I’ve saved thousands of jobs and built a new Formula 1 factory with hundreds of millions of investment.”

Stroll emphasized the significant investment he has made in Aston Martin, which amounts to around £1.5 billion. He described it as a huge show of his belief in the company and its future success.

Setting Aston Martin up for long-term success has been a challenging task that typically takes between five and 10 years for industrial companies. However, Stroll believes that achieving this feat within just three years demonstrates his determination and commitment.

Despite negative media coverage affecting Aston Martin’s performance, Stroll remains confident in the brand’s future. He believes that external perception still carries a sense of negativity due to the impact of the company’s IPO, but he emphasizes that the current management team has made significant progress over the past three years and is focused on future endeavors.

Stroll draws attention to the evidence of Aston Martin’s success in the form of increased car prices and improved margins. The average sale price of an Aston is expected to rise from £157,000 in 2020 to £223,000 in 2023, with a margin goal of 40% for future cars.

Under Stroll’s leadership, Aston Martin has already introduced the Aston Martin DB12 and has plans for the Vantage and DBS replacements, the Valhalla mid-engined supercar in 2024, and the company’s first EV in 2025. The partnership with Lucid will provide crucial motor and battery cell technology for Aston’s upcoming electric vehicles.
