However, it was lately reported that the Minister of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari had acknowledged that the tax on hybrid autos ought to be diminished from the present 48 % GST to 12 % GST. In comparability, EVs are levied a tax of 5 % GST.

Such a change would require the approval of different ministries as effectively, but when introduced into impact, might scale back the premium of a hybrid variant over a petroleum variant by a big quantity.

Lower Material Costs

One of the principle price fashions that mission the elevated affordability of EVs states that because the demand and adoption for EVs rises, and the associated applied sciences get extra environment friendly, the price of enter supplies will drop. Given that one of the crucial costly elements of a hybrid is the battery pack, decrease battery prices also needs to carry down the costs of hybrid fashions. Increased demand for hybrids might additionally play a job in decreasing the price of metals and minerals utilized in battery packs.

Discount Incentives

This might embrace added reductions on exchanging an outdated petrol or diesel mannequin in lieu of a hybrid choice.

These are a number of the vital ways in which the extremely gasoline environment friendly hybrid fashions might develop into extra reasonably priced within the subsequent few years. Mazda

Mazda’s MX-5 Miata made a grand entrance at the 1989 Chicago auto show, stealing limelight amidst legends like the Acura NSX and the Nissan 300ZX. What began as an internal debate at Mazda in the late 70s between the allure of a mid-engine variant and the pull of a front-wheel-drive design led to the birth of a classic; the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster, inspired by vintage British sports car aesthetics.

Its debut model, the NA generation, danced into the 1990s sporting a reminiscent design of the 60s Lotus Elan, but tailored for modern tastes. The Miata’s charm wasn’t just skin deep; beneath the hood roared a sprightly 1.6-liter engine delivering 116 horsepower, which later evolved into a zippier 1.8-liter powerhouse boasting 133 horsepower. Initial enthusiasts experienced its thrill with a five-speed manual, though Mazda soon introduced an automatic version for a broader appeal.

But what truly sealed its iconic status were those whimsical pop-up headlights, animating the roadster with an almost sentient smile. As years passed, Mazda celebrated its success with limited editions. The 1991 British Racing Green edition, a nod to Britain’s Grand Prix legacy, and the Sunburst Yellow variant of 1992, among others, became coveted collectibles.

Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster design

Despite its compact frame, the Miata’s interior was ingeniously designed. Thin armrests, a narrow console, and spacious footwells ensured passengers journeyed in comfort. Sure, there were quirks – limited trunk space, and taller drivers perhaps needed a baseball cap, but these were endearments, not flaws.

Special editions, like the ’93 LE with its daring blood-red interiors and the M Edition series, celebrated the Miata’s journey, paying homage to its design legacy while integrating modern amenities.

A New Dawn: The Evolution Of The MX-5 Miata

Mazda MX-5 Miata
Mazda

1999 marked a pivotal turn in the narrative of the beloved MX-5 Miata. Transitioning into its second generation and christened the NB, this roadster shed its cherubic charm. Gone were the iconic flip-up headlights, replaced by a pair of fixed, fervent eyes. This change was more than skin deep – the once delicate silhouette transformed into a more muscular and curvaceous body, signaling the Miata’s maturation.

Under the hood, Mazda’s dedication to performance was evident. The 1.8-liter engine underwent enhancements, seeing its vigor rise to a sprightly 140 horsepower, and further boosted to an impressive 155 by 2001. Keen drivers rejoiced when a six-speed manual transmission was introduced, initially reserved for the crème de la crème of the NB range. Yet, the four-speed automatic and the five-speed manual weren’t abandoned, catering to varying driver preferences.

Inside, the Miata saw a blend of nostalgia and novelty. Curves became more pronounced and edges softened, evoking a sense of luxury. Steering wheels became symbolic of distinction; while the Nardi three-spoke wheel graced almost every model, a peculiar four-spoke design was the hallmark of the 1999 base model.

Special editions became the hallmark of the NB era, with the most notable being the 10th Anniversary Edition. Dressed exclusively in Sapphire Blue Mica, it was a celebration of a decade of automotive excellence. Not only did it sport a flamboyant blue-and-black interior theme, but it also boasted features like a Bose audio system, stainless-steel door-sill plates, and the coveted Nardi wheel.

By 2001, British Racing Green made a comeback with a limited edition, decked out with features like polished 16-inch wheels, chrome gauge trims, and a tasteful tan interior. However, 2003 saw Mazda’s creative zenith, unveiling three special edition Miatas, each with unique aesthetic offerings.

A momentous shift occurred when Mazda introduced factory-installed forced induction for the very first time. The Mazdaspeed variant, a brainchild of Mazda’s performance division, was turbocharged to produce a whopping 178 horsepower. Not just an exercise in power, its enhanced suspension and racing-inspired wheels made it a force to be reckoned with, clocking 0 to 60 mph in a mere 6.7 seconds.

Rebirth Of An Icon: The NC MX-5 Odyssey

Mazda MX-5 Miata
Mazda

In 2006, Mazda unveiled the NC MX-5, blending tradition with modernity. Unlike its predecessors, this iteration momentarily shunned the ‘Miata’ badge, only to reclaim it later. Its DNA echoed the original Miata’s charm, evident in design nuances like the center hood bulge, familiar head and taillights, and the pronounced windshield surround.

Yet, under the hood, the NC was anything but old-school, boasting a punchy 2.0-liter engine, churning out a commendable 170 horsepower – nearly rivaling its turbocharged ancestor, the Mazdaspeed. Beyond the aesthetics and powertrain, the interior narrated a tale of luxury. An expansive cabin with a touch of opulence greeted the driver, without compromising the snugness characteristic of the Miata lineage.

2007 was a watershed year for the NC. Engineering marvels were showcased in the Power Retractable Hardtop (PRHT) model. This transformer, despite the added mechanics, maintained a lean stature, weighing a mere 100 pounds more than its soft-top sibling. This innovative hardtop, seamlessly tucking away, became an immediate sensation, and soon, the PRHT variant began dominating the Miata sales charts.

2013 heralded the arrival of the ‘Club’ variant – a tribute to sportiness. Resplendent with dark 17-inch wheels, a monochromatic black roof, rocker-panel stripes, and a slew of interior embellishments, the Club stood out. Manual aficionados were treated to a sixth gear, complemented by a sport suspension, Bilstein dampers, and a limited-slip diff.

From Humble Beginnings To Sexy Stardom

Mazda MX-5 Miata
Mazda

In 2016, the world was introduced to an audaciously daring and ravishingly aggressive Mazda MX-5 Miata – the ND generation. No longer just a cute roadster, this iteration roared with a demeanor that was unmistakably upscale. Its 2.0-liter engine didn’t just bark but delivered a bite with 155 horsepower, and later an invigorated 181 horsepower in 2019, making it the swiftest Miata to grace the roads.

The meticulously designed interior underscored Mazda’s commitment to raw, driving-centric pleasure. Stripped to the essentials, every dial and screen existed for purpose, not pomp. 2016 saw the introduction of the Retractable Fastback (RF), a masterstroke of design innovation. This Miata was neither coupe nor convertible but a mesmerizing blend of both. At a touch, the roof would perform an elegant dance, converting the car into a Targa-style marvel.

But Mazda wasn’t done making history. Celebrating the Miata’s 30-year legacy, a vibrant Racing Orange Anniversary Edition emerged in 2019, limited in number but boundless in appeal.

Sportier Design

Volvo C40 Recharge

The C40 Recharge looks almost identical to its sibling, the XC40 Recharge, especially if you talk about the front. The closed grille, Thor’s hammer styled DRLs and the bumper design, and the 19-inch alloy wheels are directly taken from its mechanical sibling, the XC40 Recharge.

But as you move towards the profile, the C40 Recharge has got a sloping roofline, which gives it a coupe style and sleeker appearance compared to the XC40 Recharge.

Expected Price & Rivals

Volvo could price the C40 Recharge at around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom), which is pricier than the XC40 Recharge. It will take on the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and BMW i4

Mahindra Plans to Electrify the Scorpio and Bolero Series

The pure electric Mahindra Bolero and Scorpio are expected to have a range of over 400 kilometers

  • The Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic, Bolero, and Bolero Neo will be electrified.

  • They will be based on Mahindra’s INGLO platform.

  • These vehicles could have a battery pack of up to 78kWh with a range of over 400km.

The carmaker will offer pure EV versions of both these SUV models, which include the Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic, Bolero, and Bolero Neo using its INGLO architecture.

Based On INGLO Platform

Mahindra INGLO Platform

Mahindra had already announced that they are planning a new-generation Bolero, and the EV version will likely be closer to that model than to the current one. The INGLO modular platform can accommodate a battery pack with a capacity of up to 78kWh and allows for both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems. This platform can provide a range of over 400km and the battery pack can be charged from 5 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

A Fresh Identity

These new EVs from Mahindra will have their own unique identities, unlike the XUV400, which incorporates copper elements as part of its electric design language. With a new identity, we can expect a more modern look for these electric SUVs inside and out, similar to Mahindra’s Born EV lineup.

VAUXHALL EXPERIMENTAL GIVES CLEAR VISION OF FUTURE OF THE BRAND

  • Progressive British: Vauxhall Experimental embodies three brand pillars
  • Bold and Pure: Next chapter of Vauxhall design philosophy with 4D Vauxhall Vizor
  • Painting with light: Electrochromic fabrics immerse occupants in atmospheric light

Vauxhall has unveiled its stunning new concept car, the Vauxhall Experimental, which provides a glimpse into the future of the brand. With a modern exterior design, this concept car showcases where Vauxhall is headed in the coming years.

Notable features of the Vauxhall Experimental include cutting-edge aero-efficiency technologies, a spacious and illuminated interior with lightweight seats, and an advanced head-up display. The battery-electric crossover will make its world premiere at the IAA Mobility event in Munich in September 2023, where it will introduce Vauxhall’s vision for sustainable individual mobility to a new audience.

According to Vauxhall Managing Director James Taylor, “The Vauxhall Experimental provides a glimpse of upcoming models and technologies, the future design, and a new era for the brand. This concept car represents Vauxhall’s pioneering spirit.” Mark Adams, Vice President Design, adds, “Our new Vauxhall Experimental presents an extreme interpretation of our Bold and Pure design philosophy. It embodies our vision for the future, and many elements of its design will be visible in future production vehicles. The exterior design combines optimized aerodynamics with a stunning silhouette, while the interior offers an immersive and emotional user experience.”

The sleek silhouette of the Vauxhall Experimental stands out with its absence of chrome. Instead, the concept car features exterior lighting and bold contrasting graphics that add personality and sophistication to its already impressive proportions. The battery-electric crossover is based on a state-of-the-art Stellantis BEV platform and is equipped with electric all-wheel drive. The design showcases a bold and pure aesthetic with clean surfacing and sharp, muscular wheel-arch blisters that emphasize its confident stance. Traditional wing mirrors have been replaced with fully integrated 180-degree cameras on the C-pillars.

At the front, the illuminated Vauxhall Griffin sits proudly at the center of the signature Vauxhall Compass, which represents the guiding element of Vauxhall’s design philosophy. The elongated wing signature lighting on the horizontal axis and the illuminated center crease add further drama to the front of the vehicle. Similar lighting elements are repeated at the rear, with the distinctive compass signature braking light created using edge lighting technology and sophisticated glass transparency. The rear also features bold Vauxhall lettering instead of the Griffin logo. Surrounding the front compass is the next generation 4D Vauxhall Vizor, which includes advanced sight technologies such as sensors, lidar, radar, and camera systems.

The Vauxhall Experimental incorporates clever aero solutions and offers a spacious interior through its “space detox” approach. Aero-flaps at the front and rear, as well as a rear end diffuser, enhance aerodynamic efficiency. The tires, developed in cooperation with Goodyear, are made from recycled rubber and sit on 3-zone Ronal wheels with an active feature that increases aerodynamic efficiency. Inside the concept car, the steering wheel folds away seamlessly when not in use, thanks to the steer-by-wire system that eliminates mechanical steering components. Lightweight adaptive seats with 3D mesh-technology fabrics contribute to the liberation of space inside the vehicle.

The Vauxhall Experimental also offers the Pure Experience and Pure Pad, providing a pleasurable driving experience. The slim Tech Bridge replaces conventional screens and uses augmented projection technology supported by artificial intelligence and natural voice control. The floating, transparent Pure Pad allows drivers to configure controls according to their preferences, providing instant access to frequently used features.

In addition to embodying Vauxhall’s brand pillars of Detox, Progressive British, Green Technology, and Innovation, the Vauxhall Experimental takes a step further by expressing the brand’s emotional approach to sustainable mobility. Electrochromic fabrics create an atmospheric light within the vehicle, enhancing the well-being of occupants. These reactive fabrics also have functional attributes, such as displaying warnings when a vehicle enters the blind spot, providing additional safety for occupants and other road users.

The Vauxhall Experimental continues the tradition of concept cars, which started in 1966 with the XVR Concept. It showcases a clear vision for the brand’s future.

Will Toyota Lead the Next Electric Vehicle Revolution?

Toyota has often been criticized for its limited involvement in the electric vehicle (EV) market compared to its competitors. While companies like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Chinese car brands dominate the EV scene, Toyota’s presence in terms of products and sales has been relatively minor.

However, it is important to acknowledge that Toyota has been working with electric drivetrains and batteries for over 20 years. Despite lagging behind in pure electric vehicles, the company’s experience and expertise in this field cannot be disregarded.

Running Up The Electric Bill

In 2022, Toyota ranked 29th in global EV sales by automakers, delivering only 22,300 electric vehicles worldwide. Numerous smaller manufacturers, including Renault, BMW, Ford, and various Chinese newcomers, have surpassed Toyota in terms of electric car sales. Pure electrics account for just 0.2 percent of Toyota’s total sales of 10.48 million vehicles in 2022.

Toyota’s electric vehicle lineup is limited to three SUVs (C-HR, bZ4X, and Lexus UX) and a family of commercial vans (Proace). In comparison, BYD, China’s largest EV maker, offers 13 different models excluding vans, BMW Group has eight EVs available, and Stellantis has nine battery-electric passenger cars and 15 vans.

While Toyota’s Western competitors were focused on accelerating the transition to electric vehicles, the Japanese company dedicated its efforts and resources to improving its hybrid technology.

Over 25 Years Of Know-How

In 1997, Toyota introduced the world’s first mass-produced hybrid car, the Toyota Prius. This groundbreaking model was the result of Toyota’s commitment to producing low-emission vehicles, as outlined in the Earth Charter document announced in 1992.

Since then, Toyota has sold over 5.05 million units of the Prius across four generations. The company has been instrumental in paving the way for the development and adoption of pure electric cars while consistently reducing the average emissions of its vehicle fleet.

What To Expect?

One of Toyota’s key strengths is its deep understanding of global markets. The company has a strong presence in almost every country, offering a wide range of products that cater to the needs of different consumers. Toyota is the preferred choice for new car buyers in Africa, the Middle East, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. It is also a highly popular brand in the United States, China, Latin America, and Europe due to its reputation for reliability and trustworthiness.

Looking ahead, Toyota’s recent “electric” plans, which include the development of batteries capable of traveling up to 600 miles by 2026 and 900 miles on a single charge after 2028, indicate a significant shift towards electric vehicles. These plans represent just the beginning of Toyota’s recovery in the EV market.

In my opinion, Toyota should not be underestimated. The company’s size, know-how, and international presence position it well to capitalize on the electric vehicle boom once demand is firmly established. These are three elements that even Tesla is still working to achieve.
