Why the Bloodhound Project Holds Promise for the Future

The team working on the Bloodhound project, which aims to break the land-speed record using a combination of jet and rocket power, has been seeking additional funding for a while.

Recently, they have also been searching for a new driver, a move that appears to be a sensible change in the project’s challenging history. This development struck me as a logical step that should have been taken earlier.

Instead of appealing solely to corporations, the project should have targeted individual egos from the beginning. The current land speed record of 763mph has been unbroken for 26 years, ever since Andy Green achieved supersonic speed with the Thrust SSC.

At the age of 61, Green has been in the driver’s seat for the Bloodhound project since its launch in 2008, and has already tested it at a speed of 628mph. While the initial goal was to reach 1000mph, the current focus is on surpassing the previous record by achieving a speed of 800mph.

Since the establishment of the first land speed record, it has never remained unbeaten for such a long period. The high costs and the already broken sound barrier have raised questions about the relevance of pursuing further speed achievements from a business perspective.

For Bloodhound, the primary aim has always been to promote skills and education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The car has been featured in roadshows and educational tours, with volunteer ambassadors visiting schools and colleges to raise awareness about the technology behind high-speed travel. Its objective has not only been to make noise and achieve speed, but also to inspire the development of engineers.

Although the project garnered support from several major companies, it was never enough. Consequently, given the change in societal attitudes towards noise and speed, the educational focus of the Bloodhound project has shifted towards green technology.

If the project materializes, the jet will run on synthetic fuel, and the fuel pump, initially planned to be a detuned Formula 1 engine and later a Jaguar V8, will now be a high-capacity electric motor. Additionally, the rocket’s emissions will consist solely of steam, oxygen, and excitement.

Government pledges £8.3bn to repair UK roads

The government has committed to spending £8.3 billion to fix Britain’s roads, which have been plagued by potholes. This money will be redirected from the scaled-back HS2 high-speed rail line.

This fund will be enough to resurface over 5000 miles of road and will be distributed to councils across the country for projects over the next 11 years.

It is the largest road-specific fund ever announced in the UK.

Transport secretary Mark Harper confirmed that each local authority will receive £150 million, with an additional £150 million for 2024/2025 and the rest of the funding allocated through to 2034.

Of the total funding, £3.3 billion will be allocated to the North West, North East, and Yorkshire & Humber; £2.2 billion for the West Midlands and East Midlands; and £2.8 billion for the East of England, South East, South West, and, for the first time in 8 years, London.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated, “For too long politicians have avoided making long-term decisions to improve people’s lives, and addressing potholes is a clear example. Well-maintained road surfaces could save drivers up to £440 each in costly vehicle repairs, allowing motorists to keep more money in their pockets.”

Harper added, “Most people use the roads, and potholes can cause problems for motorists, from expensive vehicle repairs to bumpy, slow, and unsafe journeys. Today’s significant funding increase for local road improvements is a win for all road users, who will benefit from smoother, faster, and safer trips, as we redirect HS2 funding to make the right long-term decisions for a brighter future.”

The new funding also includes an additional £70 million earmarked for updating 20mph zone guidance to prevent inappropriate blanket use, and measures to accelerate the expansion of electric vehicle charging.

The fund has received the support of some of the UK’s largest insurers and motoring groups.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams stated that smoother, well-maintained roads could save drivers up to £440 each in repair costs from pothole damage.

He welcomed the news, saying, “Drivers’ biggest complaint is the poor condition of local roads, so the fact that the Government has found significant additional revenue should give councils the funding certainty they need to plan proper long-term road maintenance, something we have been advocating for many years.”

“We hope local authorities will use the money effectively by resurfacing the worst roads, maintaining those in reasonable condition for longer through surface dressing, and filling potholes as permanently as possible where necessary,” he added.

Despite hydrogen being seen by many as an unprofitable and dead-end investment, some automakers believe it could be an alternative to battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) in the quest for a carbon-neutral era. BMW and its partner Toyota are strong believers in hydrogen fuel cell cars, with Toyota taking a unique approach by using hydrogen to power an internal combustion engine.

Toyota has already tested prototypes of its GR Yaris and GR Corolla hot hatches, which have been modified to run on hydrogen, during various races. Earlier this year, Toyota joined forces with domestic partners Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki to develop hydrogen-burning combustion engines for “small mobility.” The result of this collaboration is set to be unveiled next week at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show—a mockup of an off-roader that will compete in the grueling 2024 Dakar Rally.

This off-roader, known as the “HySE-X1,” is powered by a supercharged inline-four engine with a 1.0-liter displacement. Although the power output is unspecified, the vehicle weighs about 3,306 pounds (1,500 kilograms). The HySE-X1 measures 139 inches (3530 millimeters) in length, 81.5 inches (2070 mm) in width, and 67 inches (1700 mm) in height, according to Toyota and Honda.
