In the first week of July, the new and improved Kia Seltos will make its debut. After four years, this popular compact SUV is finally getting a major upgrade. The exterior and interior profiles of the Seltos have been redesigned to give it a more premium and modern appeal.

The new Seltos will come with features like a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and radar-based ADAS safety technology. It is also expected to have dual 10.25-inch displays for the touchscreen system and digital instrument cluster, along with heated front seats. The engine options will include the 160PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Carens and Verna, available with a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT. It will be the most premium Maruti car, equipped with features such as a panoramic sunroof, a 10-inch touchscreen system, dual-zone AC, ventilated front seats, and second-row powered Ottoman seats. The Invicto will also be the first Maruti car to have the ADAS safety feature. It is expected to be powered by the Hycross’ 2-litre strong-hybrid petrol engine.

Survey Shows Car Buyers Prioritize Safety Ratings and Airbags Over Fuel Economy

A recent survey conducted among Indian car buyers reveals that 9 out of 10 consumers value crash test safety ratings for all car models.

Skoda Kushaq Crash Test

Skoda Auto India partnered with NIQ BASES to conduct a customer survey on feature preferences in personal car selection. The results highlight the growing importance of vehicle safety ratings and features in car buying decisions.

Mahindra Scorpio N Global NCAP

The survey, consisting of 1,000 respondents from 10 states, asked participants to prioritize the top features they consider when buying a new car from a list of 10 options. According to the results, the highest importance score was given to the car’s crash test rating (22.7 percent), followed by the number of airbags (21.6 percent), and then fuel efficiency (15 percent). Other features included in the survey were roof type, ventilated or non-ventilated seats, electronic stability control, build quality, transmission type, body type, and performance and dynamics.

Including the preference for electronic stability control, 47.6 percent of respondents prioritized safety features above other factors in their car buying decision.

According to the survey, around 22.2 percent of buyers preferred a car with a five-star safety rating, while only 6.8 percent were willing to opt for a zero-star rated car. Currently, there are eight cars with strong five-star safety ratings from Global NCAP:

  1. Volkswagen Virtus / Skoda Slavia

  2. Volkswagen Taigun / Skoda Kushaq

  3. Mahindra XUV700

  4. Mahindra Scorpio N

  5. Tata Punch

  6. Tata Altroz

  7. Tata Nexon

  8. Mahindra XUV300

In addition, there are over 10 cars that have scored four stars in GNCAP crash tests, indicating that many manufacturers are actively working towards building safer cars and prioritizing passenger safety in the event of an accident.

The Indian government is also encouraging manufacturers to produce safer and more robust vehicles. Over the years, regulations have been implemented mandating features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt reminders, speed alert systems, and rear parking sensors in all vehicles. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish a localized crash test rating system named Bharat NCAP, as an alternative to the Global NCAP. While these safety measures may increase the cost of cars, they are considered worthwhile investments.

The updated version of the Race-R Pro GP, known as the Race-R Pro GP 06, includes several new features. It is equipped with a Carbon Aramid (COVA) shell, a multi-density EPS liner, and an optical class 1 visor with anti-fog and anti-scratch treatments. Strong Safety Score!

Mahindra Scorpio N Global NCAP

In December 2022, Mahindra Scorpio N received a full 5-star safety rating in the global NCAP crash tests. The SUV received five stars for adult occupants’ protection and three stars for child occupants’ protection. The footwell area and bodyshell was rated stable and capable of withstanding further loadings. Since the Scorpio N was tested as per the updated crash test protocols, it also passed the side barrier impact, side pole impact, and ESC tests.

No Feature Upgrades

Mahindra Scorpio N

Given how well-equipped it is, there is no surprise that the Scorpio N has received no feature upgrade. It continues with an electric sunroof, an 8-inch touchscreen system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Sony sound system, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, and 6-way powered driver’s seat.

Safety is covered by front and rear cameras, up to six airbags, hill-assist control, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and ESC (electronic stability control).

Waiting Period

Mahindra Scorpio N

The Mahindra Scorpio N still commands a waiting time of up to a year in several cities. The SUV maker has confirmed that it will soon increase its production capacity over the coming months, which will subsequently reduce its waiting period. However, on an average, a Scorpio N buyer will have to wait around six months or more.

Minor Recall

Mahindra Scorpio N

In November 2022, Mahindra recalled certain batches of the Scorpio N and XUV700. The reason was due to a suspected defective rubber bellow inside the clutch bell housing of the manual variants. This would have resulted in performance concerns. Around 6,618 units of the Scorpio N were suspected of the flaw, which Mahindra replaced free of cost.

Faux Controversy

Mahindra Scorpio N Waterfall

There was a video which went viral, showing a Scorpio N owner parking his SUV under a waterfall. The video showed that the water was leaking through the sunroof, which raised several questions about the fit and finish.

Future Changes

Mahindra Scorpio N

The Scorpio N is still a relatively newer model and is unlikely to get any upgrades anytime soon. However, when it is upgraded, we can expect the inclusion of radar-based ADAS technology. It might be updated to offer six airbags as standard when the new mandate comes into effect later this year. In terms of pricing as well, we expect the Scorpio N to get dearer come 2024.
