Three-Quarters of UK Drivers Believe British Roads Are Dangerous

  • A recent study conducted by Citroën reveals that 73% of UK drivers consider British roads to be dangerous for those who use them.
  • Between 2017 and 2021, the police in England and Wales recorded 1,114 accidents resulting in injuries caused by defective road surfaces, which led to the serious injury of 355 individuals and the death of 16††.
  • 42% of surveyed drivers were not aware that they could file a claim with the relevant local authority to compensate for vehicle damage caused by potholes.
  • 46% of drivers avoid certain roads due to the risk of pothole damage.
  • A previous study by Citroën UK found that the amount spent on compensation in the last year could have filled an additional 340,000 potholes*.

Exclusive research by Citroën UK reveals that nearly 75% of UK drivers believe that the condition of the country’s roads poses a danger to motorists and other road users.

According to Citroën UK’s latest survey, 75% of respondents reported that their cars had sustained damage from potholes, requiring vehicle repairs. However, drivers lack knowledge on how to seek support after experiencing pothole damage, as 42% of those affected stated that they were unaware of the possibility of claiming compensation from the relevant local authority. Only 14% of those surveyed said they had previously claimed compensation from their local authority.

This recent research follows Citroën’s findings in May, which revealed that the total cost of compensation claims paid out last year due to pothole damage amounted to £22.7 million, equivalent to the average cost of filling 340,000 potholes.

Citroën UK compared figures from the Asphalt Industry Alliance over the past six years and discovered that £139.9 million had been spent on damage compensation since 2017. This amount could have filled an additional 2.3 million potholes**.

In the new study, Citroën asked drivers about their perception of the condition of UK roads over the past six years. Notably, 68% of respondents felt that the roads in the UK had worsened, while only 15% believed that the condition had improved since 2017. Almost half of all drivers (46%) stated that they avoid certain roads entirely due to the fear and risk of damage.

The East Midlands was identified as the region where drivers expressed the most concern about road conditions, with 56% of respondents stating that the roads in their area had deteriorated. In contrast, only 18% of drivers in London reported a decline in road conditions in their local area.

Greg Taylor, Managing Director of Citroën UK, commented, “The people of the UK are clearly concerned about the state of our roads. The Citroën Advanced Comfort Programme helps alleviate the discomfort of driving on damaged road surfaces and reduces the impact of hitting potholes for drivers. However, it is evident that more work needs to be done to improve road conditions nationwide and restore public confidence.”

Many Citroën models, such as the New C5 X, benefit from the Advanced Comfort® Programme, which includes enhanced suspension and supportive seating for a smoother ride. All versions of the New C5 X feature Citroën’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushion® technology, which incorporates hydraulic bump stops into the suspension system to better control compression and rebound on damaged surfaces.

The New C5 X also comes with Advanced Comfort® seats as standard, which feature broad cushions and seat backs. These seats combine high-density foam at the core and a 15mm thick layer of extra textured foam on the surface to provide comfort and relaxation for occupants traveling on the challenging road network in Britain.

Lamborghini Lounge Porto Cervo officially re-opens in Sardinia

Lamborghini DNA and exclusive lifestyle in a temporary venue open until September 10th

Sant’Agata Bolognese/Porto Cervo, July 24, 2022 – Automobili Lamborghini, in the year of the brand’s 60th anniversary, creates an exclusive and luxurious Lounge in Porto Cervo for the fifth summer in a row. During this summer the Lamborghini Lounge Porto Cervo, located on Promenade du Port in via Porto Vecchio, will welcome Lamborghini owners traveling to Costa Smeralda as well as greeting new customers in exclusive events and driving activities on some of Sardinia’s most beautiful roads and scintillating landscapes, under extraordinary sunsets. The lounge will remain open until September 10th, open to clients by appointment, and serving as the hub for test drive opportunities of the ‘lifestyle’ Super-SUV Urus S1, and the Huracán Tecnica2.

All Lamborghini Lounges, whether permanent (such as New York and Tokyo) or temporary (such as Doha or Dubai) are a point of reference for Lamborghini VIP customers and guests, combining the lifestyle of Lamborghini with the latest products, and embracing the brand’s DNA. The Lounge Porto Cervo, with its 600-square-meter inside area and the additional private patio, offers an immersive 360˚ brand experience via several elements, with furnishings designed together with partner Living Divani; designed accessories; and further Automobili Lamborghini branded projects.

Once inside, the main stars are two of the most recent super sports cars from Sant’Agata Bolognese. The new Lamborghini Revuelto3 shines in Bianco Monocerus as the marque’s first V12 super sports plug-in hybrid HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle) and represents the next step towards electrification as per the company’s strategy Direzione Cor Tauri. At its side, the Huracán Sterrato4 in Verde Gea goes beyond the expected, being the eclectic first all-terrain car, produced in just 1499 pieces (all sold out).

Welcomed by Lamborghini scent in every corner of the lounge, guests can sip an Italian espresso in the living area furnished by the brand’s Italian partner Living Divani, or taking a closer look at the 3T bike Exploro Racemax x Huracán Sterrato, painted in Verde Gea mirroring the all-terrain V10-powered super sports car. The experience continues with visitors’ immersion into the Lamborghini “Epic Road Trip” NFT projects, where Lamborghini super sports cars are the unmissable protagonists in places that virtual travelers can discover thanks to a QR code explaining the campaign.

A key area of the Lounge Porto Cervo is the seasonal Ad Personam Studio: the dedicated area where even the most demanding Lamborghini customers can release their creativity to configure the super sports car of their dreams. In a vast assortment of samples, a plentitude of exterior colors, interior upholsteries, finishes and details available at Lamborghini can be selected in the virtual configurator with a Lamborghini product specialist. The brand’s main Ad Personam Studio located in Sant’Agata Bolognese re-opened to customers at the begininning of June after a major expansion. With a new setting and customer experience, it is an essential facet for the brand, showcasing more than 400 colours in its portfolio, and offering to customers infinite possibilities to express their own personality in their new super sports cars.

The Lounge experience in Porto Cervo is completed by an artistic representation of a core topic in both the strategy and the daily activity of Lamborghini: sustainability. Five artworks from the project “Inside Lamborghini” composed by Italian photographer Lucrezia Roda are exhibited here, showcasing emblematic examples of how the factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese became C02 neutral in 2015. It has stayed so ever since, even despite doubling the size of the production site: the state-of-the-art paintshop where all Urus are painted with 95% water-based paint, as well as the leather and carbon fiber upcycling process, are fully in line with the company’s philosophy of sustainability.

Originally from Lombardy, Lucrezia Roda’s vision, personal projects and commissions are mainly devoted to industry and the transformation of matter during industrial phases, which she processes and interprets through photography. Her artistic vision is defined by her command over colors and meticulous attention to detail. With industrial landscapes and abstract images, she blurs the lines between industrial photography and personal research.

The new Lamborghini Revuelto

Unveiled at the end of March 2023, the Lamborghini Revuelto is the first super sports V12 hybrid plug-in HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle). Revuelto defines a new paradigm in terms of performance, sportiness and driving pleasure from its unprecedented new architecture; innovative design; maximum-efficiency aerodynamics; and a new carbon frame concept. An output of 1015 CV is delivered from the combined power of an entirely new combustion engine together with three electric motors, alongside a double-clutch gearbox that makes its debut on a 12-cylinder Lamborghini for the first time.

The powertrain combines high specific power elements: the new 128 CV/liter combustion engine works synergically with two front axial flux motors that deliver an outstanding weight-to-power ratio, with a radial flux electric motor positioned above the first eight-speed double-clutch gearbox debuting on a 12-cylinder Lamborghini. The three electric motors are powered by a lithium-ion high specific power (4500 W/kg) battery pack that also supports a fully-electric drive mode.

Carbon fiber, produced via artisan craftmanship in the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory, is the principal structural element within the new car, used not only in the monofuselage and frame but also in all elements of the bodywork apart from the doors and bumpers. The extensive use of carbon fiber and lightweight materials, combined with the potent engine power, contributes to achieving the best weight-to-power ratio in the history of Lamborghini: 1,75 kg/CV.

The new Revuelto combines these attributes together with outstanding new aerodynamic design to deliver performance figures at the peak of its segment: acceleration from 0-100 km/h in only 2,5 seconds; 0-200 km/h in less than seven seconds; and a top speed of more than 350 km/h. These numbers combine with its exceptional dynamism thanks to the introduction of electric torque vectoring, and four-wheel drive available also in fully-electric drive mode, ensuring the Revuelto super sports car expresses its amplified qualities both on track and in daily driving.

1 Fuel consumption and emission values of Urus S; Fuel consumption combined: 14,1 l/100km (WLTP); CO₂-emissions combined: 320 g/km (WLTP)

2 Fuel consumption and emission values of Huracán Tecnica; Fuel consumption combined: 14,5 l/100km (WLTP); CO₂-emissions combined: 328 g/km (WLTP)

3 The vehicle is not yet offered for sale and is therefore not subject to Directive 1999/94/EC. The fuel consumption and emissions data are in the type of approval stage.

4 Fuel consumption and emission values of Huracán Sterrato; Fuel consumption combined: 14,9 l/100km (WLTP); CO2-emissions combined: 337 g/km (WLTP)

The 2023 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Looks As Good As It Sounds

The exterior design of the 2023 Durango SRT Hellcat carries much of the sensibilities over from the 2021 model, with the trademark Dodge hood scoop and aggressive muscle car-inspired contours the American performance manufacturer is known for. The exterior features, as well as the interior design layout, is highly driver-centric, much like the Charger and Challenger. Exterior vent accents on the hood and bumper of the Durango aren’t just for looks, their functional purpose is to help the supercharged V-8 breathe. When driving the Durango SRT, the distinctive whine from the supercharger is audible inside the cabin, along with the roar of the enhanced exhaust. For some buyers, the constant engine feedback is an annoyance, but for most buyers in the market for a 710 horsepower V-8, that roar is music to their ears.

Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Remains An Exclusive SUV

The SUV segment, midsize and full-size, is largely populated by economic-forward models and consumer-based features. The 2023 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is one of the few models to throw out the playbook in exchange for a unique and segment-bending vehicle. MoparInsider reports a production run for the 2023 Durango SRT Hellcat of roughly 3,000 units, placing it among the rarest vehicles in the manufacturer’s lineup. It’s no secret that the supercharged SUV has sparked a keen interest among performance enthusiasts, but they’ve also gained traction in the rare car community, as the V-8 Hellcat turns heads at every corner, and its limited production ensures its exclusivity.

Performance-wise, the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat doesn’t really compete with the more mainstream models and is leagues above the competition. Having said that, lesser variants of the Durango go up against other three-row mid-size SUV models like the KIA Telluride, and Jeep Grand Cherokee, but in terms of fuel economy, the Durango SRT obviously struggles to match the segment favorites. The same applies to the price range of the supercharged SUV, as it starts at roughly double its midsize competitors’ prices.

Popular Midsize SUVs:

– KIA Telluride
– Hyundai Palisade
– Chevrolet Traverse
– Hyundai Santa Fe
– Jeep Grand Cherokee
– Mazda CX-90

The few drawbacks of the supercharged Durango don’t seem to phase its popularity, as orders continue to come in for the 2023 model, signifying a strong niche interest in the idea of a supercharged SUV. The fact is, Dodge does muscle and power better than most other manufacturers, and when they do what they do best, the results are desirable, no matter the model.

10 Things You Need To Know About The 2023 Yamaha YZ450F

Motocross had been exclusive territory to 2-stroke motorcycles much before the 1950s. In 1952, an individual European Championship that allowed the use of 500cc engine displacements was set up by the FIM and would, later on, be upgraded to World Championship status in 1957. However, in 1963, a significant moment in motocross history occurred that allowed 250cc 2-stroke moto-crossers to compete in the 500cc category fielded with 4-strokers.

Fast-forward to the early nineties in a competition of changing rules, the AMA, relaxed its rules that allowed 450cc 4-strokes to compete in the same class as the 250cc 2-strokes. Yamaha took advantage of the rule and developed the Yamaha YZ400F specifically for the category giving it a 5-valve head, liquid cooling, and a 12.5:1 compression ratio. In 1997, with the introduction of the YZ400M, Doug Henry rode it to victory at the Las Vegas Supercross, a first for a 4-stroker in an AMA event, and Yamaha has not looked back since then. With the introduction of the Yamaha YZ450F in 2003, and in its 13th generation, the Yamaha has clinched just about every major FIM Motocross and US Supercross title there is to win with 2-stroke and 4-stroke technology, ever since they won their first World Motocross Championship 50 years ago. Having put all their focus on the new 2023 Yamaha YZ450F, Yamaha has developed a motocross machine that is not only lighter, faster, and easier to ride but has been designed to live up to its heritage.

Compensation payments made by local authorities in England and Wales, to road users who suffered damage to their cars due to poor road surfaces, could have paid for an additional 340,000 potholes to be filled in, according to exclusive research by Citroën UK.

Comparing Department for Transport as well as Asphalt Industry Alliance figures, Citroën found that in the last year, local authorities in England and Wales spent a total of £93.7m fixing over 1.4m potholes, at an average cost of £66.93 per repair‡‡. Over the same timeframe, total compensation claims of £22.7m were paid out to road users. These costs are made up of payouts equaling £11.6m, and staffing costs spent handling claims of £11.1m. The money used on compensation claims could have filled in an additional 340,000 potholes.

Since 2017, a total of £139.9m has been spent on damage compensation, which could have filled an additional 2.3m potholes. At the same time, between 2017 and 2021 (the most recent data available), police forces in England and Wales recorded 1,114 accidents on the roads that resulted in injury due to a ‘defective road surface’, with 355 people ‘seriously injured’ and 16 killed. Serious injuries are classed as those that require hospitalisation as an in-patient, including fractures, severe cuts, burns and internal injuries ††.

The research found a worsening picture on Britain’s roads. The frequency roads being resurfaced, on average, is now every 116 years, up 46 years from a lifespan of 70 years estimated in 2022. The average cost of filling a pothole rose to £66.93 in the latest data set, up from £63.18 the year before, and 300,000 fewer potholes were filled in compared the previous year. The one-time catch-up cost (the total cost of repairing roads back to a condition when the network can be managed cost effectively), now stands at £14.2bn – up from £12.64bn in 2022‡‡. In 2017, the one-time catch-up cost stood at £12.6bn – it dropped to £9.3bn in 2018, before gradually rising in the years since.

As part of its commitment to safety, driver well-being, comfort, and serenity, Citroën is offering a Free Pothole Damage Inspection for Citroën owners, including checks for damage caused to wheels, suspension, and tyres. The offer is available until 30 June at participating retailers.

The Free Pothole Damage Inspection includes checks on areas most commonly affected by poor road surfaces. Tyres are checked for damage, bulges, cuts, and tread depth. Wheels are checked for cracks and damage too. Key suspension components, such as coil springs and ball joints are also inspected. Retailers will also check tyre pressures and adjust these back to the recommended levels as part of the process. Where possible, retailers will also offer wheel alignment – at an additional cost.

Many Citroën models – such as New C5 X – benefit from Citroën’s Advanced Comfort® Programme, with enhanced suspension and supportive seating for a smoother ride. All versions of New C5 X feature Citroën’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushion® technology, which integrates hydraulic bump stops into the suspension system to better control compression and rebound on damaged surfaces.

Inside, New C5 X comes as standard with Advanced Comfort® seats. With broad cushions and seat backs, they combine high-density foam at the heart of each seat, and a thick 15mm layer of extra textured foam on the surface, to keep occupants comfortable and relaxed when on the road.

Greg Taylor, Managing Director of Citroën UK, said: “The 2023 ALARM report shows that the UK faces an 11-year and £14.2-billion backlog of road repairs. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that millions are spent each year on damage compensation for motorists. To help drivers avoid the worst of pothole damage, Citroën is glad to offer a Free Pothole Damage Inspection at participating retailers from 1 May – 30 June.”
