These trials aimed to identify the best application scenarios for BMW Group Logistik using Trailer Dynamics’ e-trailer.

Michael Nikolaides, Head of BMW Group Production Network and Logistics, said, “The pilot testing with Trailer Dynamics’ e-trailer showed that using this kind of electrified semi-trailer significantly reduces the fuel consumption of standard diesel tractors and noticeably increases the range of e-trucks. The BMW Group is committed to complete climate neutrality throughout the entire value chain, and projects like this accelerate our Green Transport Logistics strategy.”

Key features of the e-trailer:

Unlike conventional semi-trailers, Trailer Dynamics’ e-trailer is equipped with its own battery and electric drive axle. The electric axle supports the semi-truck’s engine and ensures optimal load ratio for better fuel efficiency. Additionally, the powered axle provides extra power during startup and on slopes. Even if the e-trailer’s battery is empty, the combination with a diesel truck ensures a continuous power supply.

The medium-distance tests lasted four consecutive days, covering logistics routes around the BMW Group location in Dingolfing. With the support of logistics service provider Gahr International, up to 250 kilometers were covered per day on motorways and main roads. Data collection from both the e-trailer and tractor was carried out simultaneously for the first time, resulting in an average diesel consumption reduction of 46.59 percent.

Significant fuel savings over long distances:

In the long distance tests, conducted on real logistics routes with a load exceeding 16 tonnes, the e-trailer achieved diesel savings of over 48 percent on average compared to conventional trailers. The round trip between Leipzig and Mamming covered a distance of 450 kilometers mainly on motorways. The e-trailer’s battery was charged using 100 percent green energy, resulting in a potential CO2 reduction of approximately 120 tonnes per year when applied on a larger scale.

100 percent CO2 reduction with an e-truck:

Combining an e-trailer with an electric tractor powered by 100 percent green electricity can achieve a 100 percent reduction in CO2 emissions while enabling long-distance routes. This scenario was demonstrated using a Volvo e-truck on the final day of medium-distance testing, achieving a driving distance of over 600 kilometers without recharging.

The use of e-trailers results in fuel savings but is counterbalanced by the heavier weight and lower payload capacity. However, this is partially offset by the increased permissible total weight for trailers in the EU. Although the initial costs of e-trailers are higher, they can result in lower operating costs. Over long distances, implementing e-trailers can significantly decarbonize the existing fleet and save costs.

Trailer Dynamics aims to contribute to decarbonizing the economy by promoting sustainable and ideally zero-emission logistics through the use of e-trailers. With the support of BMW, forwarding agents Gahr International and Elflein Spedition & Transport, the test drives represent an important step towards realizing this vision, according to Abdullah Jaber, CEO and Managing Director of Trailer Dynamics.

These visionary e-trailer pilot projects align with the BMW Group’s commitment to implementing their Green Transport Logistics strategy. By supporting the development of innovative technologies in transport logistics, BMW aims to reduce CO2 emissions and improve their overall environmental footprint.

First drive: 2024 Volkswagen ID 4

The 2024 Volkswagen ID 4 has undergone some improvements to its dynamics and interior, making it a more powerful, comfortable, and user-friendly electric SUV.

The steering now offers better feedback and self-centring, enhancing the car’s overall handling. Additionally, the optional Dynamic Chassis Control system has been refined with new software mapping and additional sensors, resulting in a smoother and more controlled ride on various road surfaces.

Inside the ID 4, changes have been made to address previous criticisms. The controls, mainly located on the new 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, now feature simpler menus and an advanced conversational voice control system. The center console also provides improved storage space. However, the perceived quality and solidity of the interior still fall short compared to some rivals.

More details regarding the ID 4’s performance, range, and pricing are yet to be released by Volkswagen. However, based on the experience with this early car, it seems that the ID 4’s potential has been better fulfilled than ever before. It offers more power, a more engaging driving experience, increased comfort, and an improved user interface, making it easier to live with.

New 2024 Ford Nugget camper reinvented with PHEV power

The 2024 Ford Nugget camper has been redesigned with plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) power. This luxurious camper van is based on the Ford Transit and offers a roomier interior, improved dynamics, and more advanced technology compared to its predecessor. The new Nugget is also based on the upcoming Transit Custom, which is the latest generation of the popular van in Europe and the UK.

The market for leisure vehicles in Europe has seen significant growth, with the number of motorhomes sold in the region doubling between 2016 and 2021. The compact camper van segment is particularly growing, making the Nugget an important part of Ford’s strategy. Ford sells around 30,000 Nuggets per year.

The Nugget is now available to order in certain markets, with a starting price of around €76,500 in Germany and approximately £65,000 in the UK.

The camper is based on the new Transit Custom platform, which gives it a fresh look and improved usability and functionality. The interior has been redesigned to offer easier movement with a lower, flatter floor and a more compact dashboard. It also features an integrated side step and class-leading sliding side door and rear tailgate apertures.

The cabin can accommodate five people and has sleeping arrangements for four. The Nugget has been developed in collaboration with conversion partner Westfalia, which has been involved in every Nugget model since 1986.

Ford has focused on creating a camper that meets the needs of the digital age. The company has worked closely with existing Nugget owners to identify areas for improvement and has incorporated their feedback into the reinvented model.

2024 CX-50: Pricing and Packaging

The 2024 Mazda CX-50, built in the U.S., combines Mazda’s on-road driving dynamics with off-road capability.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has announced the pricing for the 2024 Mazda CX-50. Built for North Americans with active lifestyles, this crossover SUV offers superior driving dynamics and sophisticated design. The 2024 CX-50 includes updates to encourage more all-terrain adventures, such as new dampers and a recalibrated electric power-assist steering (EPAS) system2.

The CX-50 is available in eight packages with two powertrain options. The CX-50 2.5 S models are equipped with a Skyactiv-G 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The CX-50 2.5 Turbo models feature a Skyactiv-G 2.5L Turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium 93 octane gas (or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular 87 octane gas). Both engines come with a Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. The CX-50 also comes standard with i-Activ All-Wheel Drive (AWD) technology and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, which includes Sport and Off-Road modes. Towing mode is available on select packages, allowing the CX-50 to tow up to 3,500 pounds3.

CX-50 2.5 S Select Package

The CX-50 2.5 S Select package offers standard safety, convenience, and technology features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel, LED interior lighting, a 10.25-inch full-color center display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, Mazda Connect Infotainment system, keyless entry with push-button start, and a 7-inch TFT LCD instrument panel display. The exterior features include 17-inch Black Metallic alloy wheels, LED headlights, roof rails, and dual exhaust outlets.

The CX-50 prioritizes safety, offering standard features such as Smart Brake Support with pedestrian detection, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning System, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go4.

CX-50 2.5 S models can tow up to 2,000 pounds when equipped with Mazda genuine towing accessories.

CX-50 2.5 S Preferred Package

The CX-50 2.5 S Preferred package adds convenience features such as heated side-view mirrors, power rear liftgate, eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats.

2026 Lotus Type 135: Electric Elise still in works after Alpine split

Lotus is continuing its legacy of excellence in dynamics, aerodynamics, and lightweighting with the upcoming release of the Type 135, an all-electric sports car. Although it will have a different propulsion system, Lotus aims to maintain its signature qualities while also benefiting from features like instant torque, easier cooling, and better packaging. As a result, the Type 135 will offer ample storage and packaging benefits.

The E-Sports platform, which will underpin the Type 135, will support both single- and twin-motor powertrains. The power output is expected to range from 469bhp to 872bhp, offering significantly more power than the current Elise models. The higher-powered versions of the Type 135 could even fill the gap left by the track-focused Exige.

The E-Sports platform is designed to accommodate both rear- and four-wheel-drive powertrains. Although the showcased concepts have so far featured rear-mounted drive systems, Lotus remains open to the possibility of offering a torque-vectoring setup similar to the one found in the flagship Evija. As a result, certain defining features from the Evija may find their way into future Lotus sports cars.

Lotus is also focused on making the Type 135 as aerodynamically efficient as possible. Taking inspiration from the Venturi tunnels of the Evija, the car will feature aerodynamic aids that run throughout its design. This design approach takes advantage of the compact nature of an electric drivetrain. However, while the Type 135 will have similarities to the hypercar, it will be far more accessible and affordable.

Lotus plans to leverage the efficiencies within the broader Geely group, which includes Volvo, Polestar, Lynk&Co, and LEVC, to keep development and retail costs down. By utilizing components and systems from other brands, Lotus aims to deliver affordable performance. While it may not be possible to offer the Type 135 at the same price as the entry-level Elise, the cost of necessary materials and components is expected to decrease significantly. This could potentially position the Type 135 in the price range of the retired Exige line-up, estimated to be between £80,000 and £100,000.
