Why We Can’t Wait For The GMC Sierra EV To Arrive

Breaking tradition, GMC will release the Denali Edition 1 trim, a luxurious powerhouse that accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The Sierra EV also boasts air suspension, “crab walk” capability, and a towing capacity of up to 9,500 pounds. It’s perfect for work but also perfect for play. Many consider this prime competition for the F-150 Lightning.

Nestled in a spacious crew-cab design, the interior exudes luxury with advanced infotainment options and high-end materials. As GMC’s inaugural electric model, the Sierra EV sits on GM’s Ultium Platform, promising a seamless blend of handling and performance. With an expected price of $107,000, the Denali Edition 1 model marks a new dawn for the truck industry, signaling a new era for GMC as well.

Of course, other trims will be coming to market in the year following the initial Denali Edition 1 release, so drivers will have more than one option to choose from. GMC has been a bit slower to enter the EV field, although with Sierra, it may be able to make up for lost time.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from GMC, various manufacturer websites, and other authoritative sources, including Car and Driver, the GM Press Room, and MotorTrend.

GMC’s First-Ever Electric Model Is On The Horizon

GMC has announced its long-anticipated electric Sierra will hit roads next year. This EV pickup will enter an already competitive space, with the F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, and even the Tesla Cybertruck making enough noise to block out a newcomer easily. Luckily for GMC, the Denali 1 inaugural release paves its own way, giving the market an expensive, luxurious super truck to test drive.

At a whopping $107,000 MSRP, the all-electric Sierra will be an eyebrow-raiser for more reasons than one. This electric pickup offers a range of 400 miles and technology for days. GMC went with top-of-the-line interiors and exterior detailing, giving the Sierra a step up from others like it.

The Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 Will Be Fast. Like Really, Really Fast.

One of the more exciting specs for the 2024 Sierra EV is its horsepower. With 754 ponies ready to take on any terrain, this super truck is set to be one of the fastest in its category. Moreover, with 785 pound-feet of torque, you also have significant handling while driving your Sierra, which is not always the case with larger, boxier vehicles.

GMC has also promised a 0-60 MPH speed rating of 4.5 seconds, which, compared to the F-150’s average of 4.2 seconds, is not far behind. Moreover, the Sierra Denali Edition 1 boasts max trailering of up to 9,500 pounds, although this might slow the truck down a bit on the highway. Regardless, the all-new gen Sierra is different from what GMC has given customers in the past and will surely be monumental for the company. 2024 cannot come fast enough!

The GMC Sierra Is Getting A Taste Of The Ultium Battery Technology

GM CEO presenting ultium Cell investment plans
General Motors

Something else worth mentioning regarding the Sierra EV is its Ultium battery and technology. Because GMC falls under its parent company’s (GM) wings, future electric models will use Ultium batteries/platforms. This is great news, as Ultium provides GM vehicles with better range, faster charge times, and easier-to-scale batteries for future lineups.

The GM Ultium battery options range from 50 kWh to over 200 kWh, helping to give most of the companies’ releases at least 300 miles of expected range per full charge. On top of that, Sierra will see an expected 400 miles according to the automaker come 2024. This would be one of the best ranges in GM’s catalog.

Your GMC Sierra EV Will Offer 400 Miles Of Range

On top of offering impressive range, the Ultium battery inside the 2024 Sierra EV is placed in a way that lowers the truck’s center of gravity while enhancing ride comfort and driving confidence on and off the road.

This is per a GM pressroom article, which explains how Sierra’s latest design even offers an Ultium Power Bar, which can be used to power tools and other accessories off the grid or at a campsite, as needed. When properly equipped, the Sierra EV Denali’s Power Station Pro can power another EV, essentially working as its own self-sustaining charge station.

The All-New Sierra Pickup Is *Extra* Fancy

Most notably, the all-new Sierra Pickup is green, mean, and stylin’. This model not only boasts speed, torque for days, and 400 miles of driving range, but it’s also meticulously designed. GMC has rolled out the red carpet for this model with top-of-the-line materials, configuration, battery placement, and connectivity/infotainment. For a higher MSRP compared to much of its competition, we’ll share why this truck is worth the extra $$$.

Looking Inside The All-New Denali Edition 1

Let’s begin with the Denali Edition 1 EV Pickup. Here are some details/features drives can expect upon hopping in one of these electric models:

  • Authentic premium materials, including grain-matched open-pore wood.

  • Panoramic glass sunroof/moonroof
  • Aluminum, etched stainless steel detailing throughout the cabin
  • 16.8-inch diagonal freeform infotainment5 touchscreen
  • A 60/40-split second-row seat

Per one of the truck’s engineers:

“This truck is everything customers know about the Sierra, but is so much more,” said Nichole Kraatz, chief engineer, GM Battery Electric Trucks. “Leveraging GM’s dedicated Ultium pickup platform, it takes the Sierra franchise to new benchmarks of capability, versatility and luxury — all in a zero-tailpipe-emissions package.”

Outside The All-New GMC Sierra Electric Truck

Moving outside, the Denali Edition 1 inaugural release will also pack a punch on its exterior. Here are some notable features you can expect on the newest-gen Sierra:

  • eTrunk with Power-Operated Hood

With bold design elements, impressive performance features, and the ability to self-power and charge other EVs, the 2024 Denali Edition 1 is a game changer. It’s not every day that GMC releases an electric model (we’ve waited this long), so that in itself is exciting. After all, the Denali nameplate has always been an icon.

GM has perfected its Ultium technology for many years, with Silverado, Equinox, and countless other successes using it. Therefore, we’ll treat the all-new Sierra EV like the creme de la creme within the U.S. automaker’s portfolio, a title we’re sure it can live up to upon next year’s release.

The Denali Edition 1 Will Ship Out In Early 2024

Lastly, it’s worth noting that Sierra EV comes out early next year, with larger-scale production happening towards summer. GMC has already made official statements, so keep an eye on your local dealership’s websites. Happy driving!

This WW2 ‘Earthquake Bomb’ Was Intentionally Designed to Miss Its Target. Here’s Why

In 1941, an engineer named Wallis came up with a unique idea for the Allied forces. He proposed dropping an incredibly heavy bomb near a target, which would then penetrate deep into the ground before detonating. The resulting explosion would create a tremendously powerful shockwave that could severely weaken the foundations of a building, rendering it useless.

The goal was not to directly destroy the target in the traditional sense, but rather to cause what can be described as an “earthquake” effect. This approach was based on the scientific understanding that shockwaves travel faster and more efficiently through solids compared to air. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) approved Wallis’s proposal and allowed him to experiment with creating this unique bomb.

This bomb was known as the Tallboy. It should not be confused with a small can of beer, as it weighed a staggering 12,000 pounds. To put this into perspective, the heaviest bomb available before the Tallboy weighed only 1,000 pounds. Standing at 21 feet tall, Wallis’s creation truly earned its name.

The Tallboy had a diameter of 3 feet 8 inches and had a total weight of 11,855 pounds. The bomb contained 5,200 pounds of Torpex D1, an explosive twice as powerful as TNT. When dropped from an altitude of 20,000 feet, the bomb created a crater that was 80 feet deep and 100 feet across. It had an estimated terminal velocity of around 3,600 feet per second and could penetrate through 16 feet of concrete. Upon impact, the Tallboy would be traveling at approximately 750 miles per hour.

Over 700 Tallboy bombs were dropped during the course of the war, targeting various locations including the German battleship Tirpitz.

Tesla Model X now eligible for full EV tax credit following significant price reductions

In addition to the price drop and qualifying for a tax credit, the Tesla Model X now offers all five color options without any additional fees. Furthermore, Tesla has reduced the cost of its FSD Beta, a Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system. Previously priced at $15,000, the FSD capability is now available for $12,000, reflecting a 20% reduction. The purchase of FSD after buying a Tesla does not impact the car’s eligibility for the tax credit. For now, the monthly subscription price will remain the same at $99 or $199, depending on the level of autopilot functionality. Tesla vehicles equipped with Enhanced Autopilot can perform tasks such as automatic lane changing, merging on and off highways, parking (parallel and perpendicular), and being summoned by a smartphone in a parking lot. FSD also includes the ability for a Tesla to autonomously stop at red lights. However, some Tesla customers have expressed dissatisfaction with the autonomous driving features.

Overall, these price reductions allow customers to purchase a new Model X at a lower cost compared to before and choose from various color options without extra charges. Tesla has also made its other models more affordable, including the Model S, which now has a price tag of $74,990, a $3,500 reduction from its previous price. As a result, the larger-battery trims of both the Model X and Model S are now cheaper than the smaller-battery options prior to the price drop. Although the pricier Plaid models have also been discounted, they still remain too expensive to qualify for a full EV tax credit.

Starz Streaming Service Offers a Lower Price, but There’s a Catch

Starz has recently reduced its pricing, which is good news for subscribers. However, this move doesn’t address the ongoing trend of increasing prices in the streaming industry. Many major streaming services, including Disney+, have raised their monthly or annual rates. In an attempt to make the price increase more appealing, some companies are offering plans with lower monthly costs that come with ad breaks. Hulu has been operating with this business model for some time, while Netflix has recently introduced a similar plan. Netflix charges $6.99 per month in the United States for its plan with ads, but a hefty $15.99 per month for the standard ad-free plan.

The rising costs in the streaming market, coupled with its highly fragmented nature, have left many consumers frustrated. Some customers find themselves paying as much for multiple streaming services as they did for cable or satellite TV, negating the initial reason they switched to streaming. While sharing costs with friends or family has been a common way to ease the financial burden, services like Netflix and Disney have started cracking down on password sharing. During Disney’s August 2023 earnings call, they expressed their intention to implement similar restrictions for their streaming service in the future.

2024 BETA 200RR FIRST RIDE: THE WRAP

# 2024 BETA 200RR FIRST RIDE: THE WRAP

Rodney Smith delivered a 2024 Beta 200RR to us this week for a test ride. Two-stroke 200cc bikes were popular in the past but were phased out over time. This was mainly due to the difficulty in convincing European and Japanese manufacturers to produce bikes that didn’t fit into a specific class. The EPA also played a role, as they required all two-strokes to be labeled as “closed course competition vehicles.” However, in 2019, Beta decided to introduce the 200RR despite these challenges. The engineers took the 125RR model, increased its displacement to 190cc, and added electric start and oil-injection. The result was a bike that was in a class of its own, although Rieju also has a 200cc two-stroke model. Currently, Beta is a much larger company compared to Rieju.

We had the opportunity to test the Beta 200RR when it was first released in 2019, and we were impressed by its performance. The bike weighs 223 pounds without fuel, which is similar to the Husqvarna TE150 we tested earlier this month. We noted that the Husky felt more like a 200cc bike this year with increased low-end power. However, the Beta 200 is truly 200-like since it is a 200cc model.

The Beta 200RR is an exceptional trail bike. It has abundant low-end power and is nearly impossible to stall accidentally. The bike has a significant flywheel effect and produces usable torque. The jetting is flawless, and the bike doesn’t load up even after extended periods of partial throttle. It starts easily and warms up quickly. The power output on the top end is also impressive. Despite its strong low-end power, we expected the bike to lose power at higher RPMs. However, this was not the case. The 200RR can rev out past 9000 rpm, similar to most 250cc two-strokes. The peak power is decent, but not more than what you would find in a well-running 125cc bike.

In terms of handling, the Beta 200RR is steady and predictable. It remains composed even on rocky and choppy terrain. The bike is lighter than most off-road two-strokes, making it easier to ride in challenging conditions.

Overall, we had a great first ride on the Beta 200RR, and we hope to keep it in our fleet for an extended period. Rodney dropped off an FMF silencer with a spark arrester and a tall seat, so we can start making mild customizations. Look for a full test of the bike in the November print edition of Dirt Bike magazine.

Rolls-Royce Drop Tail: A Limited Edition Two-Seat Roadster

The Rolls-Royce Drop Tail is a modern two-seat roadster that pays homage to the coachbuilt drop-tops that solidified the brand’s position as a luxury leader a century ago.

This ultra-exclusive vehicle is the result of a four-year collaboration between Rolls-Royce and four clients. It is considered the pinnacle of the company’s in-house coachbuilding capabilities, joining the ranks of the highly sought-after Sweptail (2017) and Boat Tail (2021) as part of a series of multi-million-pound bespoke vehicles.

While Rolls-Royce does not disclose the prices for these coachbuilt specials, it is known that each of the four Drop Tails cost their respective owners more than the £20 million Boat Tail.

Unlike a simple redesign of the retired Dawn convertible, the Drop Tail features an entirely new monocoque chassis made from steel, aluminium, and carbon fibre. This marks a first for Rolls-Royce’s Coachbuild division, as previous bespoke models were based on the Architecture of Luxury platform, which also underpins the Cullinan, Ghost, and Phantom.

Powering the Drop Tail is a specially tuned, twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine. It delivers 593bhp and 620lb ft of torque – an increase of 30bhp in power compared to the Phantom, but a decrease of 44lb ft in torque. While performance figures have not been released, it is expected that the Drop Tail will closely match the V12-powered Dawn, featuring a sub-5.0-second 0-62mph time and a top speed limited to 155mph.

Rolls-Royce Drop Tail La Rose Noir rear quarter

According to Rolls-Royce design director Anders Warming, the V12 engine was chosen over an electric powertrain because the brand wanted to celebrate the roadster and the V12 powertrain, which will be a focal point for the next few years. Warming also mentioned that electric coachbuilds may come into play in the future.

Measuring 5.3m in length and 2.0m in width, the Drop Tail is smaller than the electric Spectre. Its distinctive silhouette is characterized by a low coupe-like roofline inspired by “chop-top” hot rods, giving the vehicle a more sporty character compared to other mainstream Rolls-Royce models. Additional design elements include blade-shaped haunches and a large carbon fibre rear diffuser, finished in semi-clear lacquer to accentuate its prominent position on the painted body.
