BEN BARNICOAT, No. 89 Lexus RC F GT3
What does it imply to get one other win right here Long Beach?

“I have to say a huge thank you to the team. Vasser Sullivan and Lexus Racing USA, TRD (Toyota Racing Development). We’re on a bit of a roll at the moment, but we had a fantastic season last year, and Daytona is just a small bump in the road. Very lucky to be on this team with all the work they put in, with the hours of dedication to excellence. I don’t believe there’s any other GT team operating, pushing as hard as we are. The results aren’t a shock. You get what you put out, right? I’ve put so much into this and I’m just happy I can deliver the results for them. To go back-to-back here at Long Beach is special. This track is amazing and it’s an amazing venue. The atmosphere of having this race with INDYCAR; I owe Jimmy (Vasser, co-owner) and Sulli (James Sullivan, co-owner) big thank you’s to race in the GTD class today. They gave me a rocket ship RC F GT3. It’s pretty special to be back up here.”

There were a lot of pros that qualified yesterday, so I was up against a pretty tough field at the start. But I controlled the race from the start beginning and got a good jump, got into turn 1, handled a couple restarts and saved our Lexus RC F GT3 to make sure Mr. Platinum himself beside me (Ben Barnicoat) could bring it home. It was good!. Really cool, you know the number 89, the significance behind that is 1989 was the first time Lexus came stateside to the U.S. Awesome to honor them and get the win for them. Back-to-back at Long Beach is fantastic.”

And then, we decided to chip away and get our places back one-by-one. But at the end of the day, we had to retire early due to some contact. Congrats to the No. 89 Lexus RC F GT3 for getting the win. After starting from second place and showing strong pace in the race, the positions of sixth and ninth are disappointing. Nevertheless, it is good to see that our LMDh car is competitive on all tracks and over all race distances in its second year in the IMSA series. We will continue to work hard to reward ourselves with corresponding results. The next opportunity to do so will be in May at Laguna Seca. Congratulations to Turner Motorsport, Robby Foley, and Patrick Gallagher on the podium in the GTD class. I am pleased to see that the circuit in Long Beach continues to be good ground for the BMW M4 GT3 after the last two years’ victories.”

Jesse Krohn (#24 BMW M Hybrid V8, sixth place): “The field was so close together that it was extremely difficult to move forward. Due to the yellow flags, the lapping of the GTD drivers, which we had hoped to take advantage of, did not come into play as expected. That is of course disappointing because the performance of the car was much better than the result. At least we took some points. Now we focus on Laguna Seca.”

Nick Yelloly (#25 BMW M Hybrid V8, ninth place): “The race did not go well. My stint was okay, even though I was unlucky once when lapping and lost a place because of it, but the yellow flag just before our pit stop put us on the back foot. We wanted to make up ground with a late stop, but the regrouping of the field nullified this strategy. We had a very strong car here in qualifying, and we were also among the fastest in the race when we could run freely. Especially in the corners, we were better than our competitors. We will continue to work on improving even further.”

At the FIA WEC opener in Qatar, we realised that we need to improve significantly to compete at the level we expect of ourselves in the world championship. We have worked hard over the past weeks and expect to be able to make the first progress at Imola. In the IMSA series, we experienced one of our strongest races at Long Beach in 2023. With second and fourth places, we were very close to our first victory with the BMW M Hybrid V8. Now we hope that we can fight for the lead again this time and thus convert the speed we have already shown at Daytona and Sebring into top results. Both in the FIA WEC and in the IMSA series, we are also very well positioned with the BMW M4 GT3. I expect our teams to have a chance of winning in both racing series.”

I like the ambiance, the food, and the people – so I’m really looking forward to it. Imola is a very historic racetrack that I know from DTM. In 2022, I made it to the podium there, so I have good memories. We have conducted some tests and simulator sessions since the opener in Qatar and hopefully will make a step forward.”

Maxime Martin (Team WRT, #46 BMW M4 GT3): “It will be a special weekend for us because it’s Valentino’s home race in the FIA WEC. I therefore expect it to be very crowded, and I anticipate many spectators with high expectations at the track. Our first race in Qatar was really solid with a fourth-place finish. We will try to improve our package and aim for the podium. That would be a good result, also in terms of the world championship. I know the track and am confident that Ahmad, Valentino, and I will be competitive. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Last year we had a strong race here. We have developed the car in a good direction, and the result of the 12h Sebring did not fully reflect our performance. We have made some adjustments, and I am confident that we can achieve a top result.”

Vasser Sullivan Driver Quotes

PARKER THOMPSON, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

How would you describe your efficiency and the workforce’s efficiency on the Rolex 24?

“Up until the last hour, the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team did absolutely everything right. From the drivers to the pit crew, the engineers, we were the definition of perfection. To have it go away like that has me lost for words honestly. I can’t thank my teammates enough. Particularly Aaron Telitz who did a triple stint there at the end. We wouldn’t have been in that position without his effort. The pit box did an amazing job to keep us in the top race all day long. Unfortunately, we have to wait another 12 months to get another crack at it.”

FRANKIE MONTECALVO, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

How was your race with the Lexus RC F GT3 earlier than what transpired within the final hour?

“It was a tough end to the day today. I feel like we were in the top two spots the entire time. It’s a hard blow to end this way. The No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team did a phenomenal job. Qualifying on pole and then controlling the race for a while. We didn’t have contact until something inadvertent later in the race, which provided some damage. To end like this is a tough one. We had a great run going and had some great points going for us. Going out of the race early like this is tough for us and the team. But I know the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team will get this thing back together and we’ll be ready for Sebring.”

AARON TELITZ, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

Can you’re taking us via the race for your self and all the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus workforce?

“I feel so bad for the Vasser Sullivan Lexus crew. I felt like we had a shot at the podium today. The whole team was operating at such a high level. To see it go away like that hurts a lot. My co-drivers did an amazing job throughout the race. Parker (Thompson), Frankie (Montecalvo) and Ritomo (Miyata) absolutely nailed their stints. Everyone contributed and the pit stops were excellent. Just a big bummer at the end, but I know this team will regroup and we’ll be hungry for Sebring.”

RITOMO MIYATA, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

Can you describe your first expertise on the Rolex 24 and with the Vasser Sullivan Lexus workforce?

Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way we had hoped.”

BEN BARNICOAT, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3

Can you describe the eventful Rolex 24 that the No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus workforce had?

We had a great qualifying result last week and got to start the Rolex 24 from the front row for the first time and take the lead in the first corner, which was special. First stint felt like we had great pace in our Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3. We were in good control and comfortable, but what happened when Mike (Conway) was in the car was unavoidable. Wrong place, wrong time. That happens sometimes in motorsports. Just bummed for everyone that put so much effort into this race. We kept going after that incident to get as many points as we could. Fantastic job by the Vasser Sullivan crew to get the car ready to go. We were still able to get some points from the day and we did everything we could to maximize what we could. No one in this group deserves what happened to us and the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan RC F GT3 team today, but we are champions and we have a champion mindset. “Really gutted we had the incident there in the first hour of the race. Not much I could do to avoid the spinning car in front of me. Maybe I could’ve seen it coming, but once it happened, I had nowhere to go. I’m really disappointed as I thought we had a good shot at the podium, so unfortunate we couldn’t achieve that. Also bummed for the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team as they had a great shot at a podium as well. Tough day for the entire Vasser Sullivan team, but they’re a strong team and they’ll come back swinging. Big thank you to Vasser Sullivan and Lexus for the opportunity to drive the car again. That’s very special and shows that even though we were champions last year, we’re not resting, and we’ve continued to work, especially the guys on the Vasser Sullivan team and Lexus. Things have happened at this race in the first lap over the years, so being at the front and staying up there to keep our nose clean will help us avoid those situations happening behind us. Super proud of Parker (Thompson) getting pole in the GTD class, and Jack qualifying P2 is great. Really excited for this weekend.”

MIKE CONWAY, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3
How is it being again with Lexus and Vasser Sullivan within the Rolex 24?
“Great to be back with Vasser Sullivan in the Lexus RC F GT3, driving a championship-winning car. I knew the guys were doing a great job last year when I was with them, so to see them win the championship at the end was great. Getting back in the car and used to the nuances of going fast around here. Good qualifying overall, starting in the front of the field. Looking forward to race day.”

PARKER THOMPSON, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
How does it really feel to say pole on the Rolex 24 and what’s your outlook for the race?
“One for one in GTD qualifying, getting pole at Daytona! Doesn’t get much better than that. It’s incredible to think I was spotting here two years ago and now I’m taking my first pole in a Lexus RC F GT3. I can’t thank the Vasser Sullivan team and Lexus Racing enough for the opportunity. Getting the first Rolex 24 pole for the team and Lexus is neat. I still have a lot to learn going into the race this weekend, but we’re starting from the best spot with the best driver lineup. There’s no reason we can’t compete for a Rolex watch on Sunday. Excited to see what we can make happen.”

FRANKIE MONTECALVO, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
What does a pole on the Rolex 24 imply for all the workforce heading into the race?
“The team did a phenomenal job in a hectic qualifying, getting out in a hole after the red flag since it was basically a two-lap shootout. Both cars did a phenomenal job. Parker did an awesome job in his first qualifying effort in the No. 12 RC F GT3, putting us on pole for the Rolex 24, which is amazing. It’d be good to stay up at the front, away from all the hectic stuff in the back. Phenomenal start to the racing season that brings along some good points with the pole, so that will help us down the line considering to how many points it took for us to get third in the championship. We can take everything we can get early on. The Vasser Sullivan team has been firing on all cylinders this weekend. Our Lexus RC F GT3 keeps getting better and better, and the team keeps functioning as a complete family. I have complete confidence going into the race.”

AARON TELITZ, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
What are your ideas and emotions heading into the race this weekend?
“The Vasser Sullivan team is operating at such a high level just like we were all last season, carrying it over into 2024. The team has been working great. Ritomo (Miyata) has been awesome and is a great addition to the No. 12 RC F GT3 team. Parker (Thompson) sticking it on pole for the Rolex 24 has us on cloud 9. We’re really excited for this weekend.”

RITOMO MIYATA, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
Can you discuss your expertise thus far on the Rolex 24 and what you’re anticipating this weekend?
“My first time racing in the U.S. has been great. The Vasser Sullivan team and my teammates have been kind to me so far. I’m trying to take everything step-by-step with the difference in the RC F GT3 compared to what I’ve raced before. It’s been very good overall. I’ve had a great time working with everyone at Vasser Sullivan and Lexus so far and the result from qualifying is great as well. Really proud of the team. It’s all been very enjoyable.”

Innovation and Tradition: Rolex’s Exclusive Look at Monterey Car Week 2023

No other car show in the world can compare to Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance and the entire Monterey Motorsports week with events that range from the Tour d’ Elegance to The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion races, and the Concourse. It is like having multiple phenomenal auto museums all put together in different locations for various events. From vintage cars to classic cars, supercars and concept cars, Pebble Beach has it all during this week. And Rolex, whose precision mechanical watches rival the finest cars, is right there in the excitement of it all.

This past week, I was able to attend several days of the events week with Rolex and experience the excitement firsthand, which I am happy to share here.

The Quail –perhaps the most luxurious and experiential garden party ever – showcases some of the finest cars in the world, from past to present and even the future. This year the event,  held at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club, witnessed the 20th anniversary of this magnificent motorsports event, and more than 400 cars and motorcycles came together on the lawn, with many brands unveiling their newest automobiles and prototypes.

Among the new releases were several from Lotus. In fact, Rolex testimonee (ambassador) and F1 World Champion Jenson Button, released the completely bespoke Lotus Evija hypercar at The Quail. The car, which boasts a unique Arctic White, Verve Yellow, and Carbon Black color scheme that recalls the colors of the 2009 Champion-winning Brawn GP car he drove. The car has a deployable door mirror housing with the number 22 on it (Jenson’s race number during that incredible 2009 winning season) and even has a laser-etched aluminum strip that runs through the seat center and showcases the date and place of each of Jenson’s 15 F1 wins. The car has a confirmed output of 1500kW/2039 PS.

“I absolutely love The Quail. Every year the event gets bigger and better, and it’s so cool to see the new prototypes and models being launched. Having the old and the new sitting side by side, as well as the ‘restomod’ cars that look vintage but have modern technologies, is very special,” said Button, noting that Rolex, with its storied past, innovative technology, and precision mechanics, fits right in.

Visitors to the event, which costs about $1,500 a ticket, get to vote for their favorite car. The winning car is named the Rolex Best of Show.  This year, the one-of-a-kind 1956 Ferrari 410 Superamerica ‘Super Fast,’ owned by Anne Brockinton Lee, was crowned the winner and welcomed into the 2023 Rolex Circle of Champions.  The owner was gifted a Rolex green-dial Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 in Oystersteel with a white gold fluted bezel and a Jubilee bracelet that sells for $8,950. Rolex has partnered with The Quail since 2005 as the Official Timepiece.

On Saturday, we attended the  Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which runs for four days throughout the week. Held at the renowned WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the racing event witnesses 400 vehicles showcasing nearly a century of motorsport heritage. This year, the event celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Corvette and the 100 years of the 24 Hours of LeMans by displaying the first ‘vettes to compete at Circuit de le Sarthe in 1960.

There was also a special F1 race, and a host of other impressive competitions. They were Gentlemen’s races since many of these cars are worth millions in their restored conditions. We even had to opportunity to go where most visitors cannot:  up to the photographer’s tower at the top of the famed corkscrew turn – considered one of the most challenging turns in the world thanks to the 59-foot drop in elevation and the blind crest and apex. The Rolex signage is omnipresent during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, but it is particularly eye-catching at the corkscrew turn.

The festivities concluded on Sunday 20 August with the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance®. Held on the 18th fairway of the legendary Pebble Beach golf course, more than 210 spectacular cars from 1906 to 1998 were on display as they competed for special classes and the ultimate win: Best of Show. Among the highlight automobiles were at least 40 entries from more than 20 countries around the world. The cars are judged on their restoration and authenticity – translating to an exacting replica of  the original automobiles, both inside and out.

This year, the 72nd, celebrated innovative designs from classic and modern eras, with classes such as Figoni, Mercedes-Benz, Pegaso and others, including the 60th anniversary of McLaren, the 60th anniversary of Lamborghini, the 75th anniversary of Porsche, the Vanderbilt Cup era cars, post-war luxury and American Dream Cars of the 1950s. On the other side of the course, the concept lawn showcased the future of automobiles.

Rolex clocks and signage were naturally present everywhere and when the Best of Show car was named – this year the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster – Rolex presented the owner, Jim Patterson, with a specially engraved Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 in Oystersteel with a yellow gold fluted bezel and a jubilee bracelet ($12,700 retail). Patterson had purchased the car at an auction in 2022 for $9.9 million with the intent to restore it to its original glory. The restoration was conducted by RM Auto Restoration and the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.

Rolex Testimonee and Record nine-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Tom Kristensen, was an Honorary Judge at the Concours and commented on the winners. “For a car to take home the honors at Pebble Beach it must be the ultimate. The precision engineering, the authenticity of every mechanical part and the style of its presentation are everything – it takes a huge amount of preparation and passion to succeed. To then receive a Rolex watch rewarding this dedication is something that stays with you forever. It’s a timeless reminder.”

Rolex’s history of motorsports spans approximately 100 years, and the brand continues to commit to the sport whether it is classic cars, F1 racing, or endurance racing.
