In the longer term, Toyota’s plans for the brand new North American Hydrogen HQ will embrace a sustainable training middle, out there for excursions by reservation. The middle will probably be a spot for individuals to be taught extra about Toyota’s imaginative and prescient of sustainability and the function that hydrogen will play.

30+ Years of Development
From creating one of many world’s first mass market passenger gasoline cell electrical autos within the Mirai, to making use of and scaling the know-how now to different functions that may profit from zero-emissions, together with heavy-duty transportpower generation systems, and others, Toyota’s analysis and improvement with hydrogen gasoline cell know-how spans greater than 30 years.

For a lot of that point, the Gardena workplace supported or initiated a variety of gasoline cell electrical tasks. To share some latest examples, the Fuel Cell Development (FCD) group was instrumental in supporting the event of Toyota’s light-duty Mirai, launched again in 2015, and the group collaborated with trade companions to assist assist infrastructure progress by the state of California.

In 2017, to deal with decarbonization efforts at native ports, Toyota’s FCD group helped show the scalability of gasoline cell know-how after it acquired a Class 8 truck and fitted it with a gasoline cell electrical powertrain consisting of two Mirai fuel-cell stacks. This effort then led to a collaboration with PACCAR’s Kenworth model to construct 10 proof-of-concept vehicles, vehicles used to assist the “Shore to Store” ZANZEFF venture that proved the viability of hydrogen-powered gasoline cells as a zero-emission powertrain in heavy-duty functions. PACCAR and Toyota later agreed in 2023 to pursue commercialization of the venture, with Toyota supplying the gasoline cell powertrain kits from its Kentucky plant as a Tier 1 provider.

MINI pulls an ace out of its sleeve with the primary all-electric MINI Aceman. An interview with Oliver Heilmer.

Mr. Heilmer, once you joined MINI in 2017, how did you set about creating a imaginative and prescient to guide the fashions into the long run?

Given that MINI is a really conventional model, the query was: how do you evolve a model like this into the long run? To reply that, we went proper again to the beginning of the traditional Mini to know the spirit of Sir Alec Issigonis and derive from this the place the MINI model is heading in at this time’s context. The subsequent step was to discover the essence of the unique Mini along with our very various group and derive our personal artistic mindset. This was our basis to develop an general model design imaginative and prescient to function a tenet in designing the brand new merchandise.

What was your largest problem in creating a totally new design language?

The largest problem was and nonetheless is the profound engagement with the model’s sturdy historical past. The first MINI was an absolute disruption – however that can also be a part of the story. We may simply say that MINI is disruption and let the whole lot that occurred earlier than keep within the historical past books. But that will be to discard the guts of the model. Instead, we now discuss impartial characters – and the MINI Cooper instantly shone because the icon in our eyes. You get nearer to the quintessential ethos of the unique mannequin: a strong character, however with as few fancy frills as attainable – “Charismatic Simplicity” expresses this.

What does the brand new MINI “Charismatic Simplicity” design language symbolize and the way is that this mirrored within the new MINI Aceman?

It’s about sturdy characters and about every member of the family having their very own particular person place throughout the MINI household. For instance, the MINI Aceman has a singular design language when considered from the aspect, and a singular graphic for the wheel arch trims. It is compact, agile and exudes a dedication to forge forward. That is what highlights this charismatic facet. At the identical time, we have now consciously evaded superfluous stylistic parts. Our problem was to outline a particular character with as few design parts as attainable.

How would you describe the MINI Aceman character?

The MINI Aceman is each a sensible and expressive, distinctive companion in on a regular basis life. It steps out into the world recent and carefree and takes up its place on the centre of the MINI household. It is an impartial character that may be fairly ‘edgy’ and appeals to clients who – regardless of their age – worth individuality and distinctiveness in city areas.

The MINI Aceman is the primary of its type. What makes the MINI Aceman the signature automobile for the city surroundings?

The MINI Aceman suits completely into the city surroundings because it reinterprets the traditional MINI values in a contemporary, all-electric crossover format. It affords an elevated seating place that conveys a sense of security and a beneficiant quantity of house with out shedding the compactness and manoeuvrability which can be the MINI hallmarks.

Where do you draw recent inspiration to develop new MINI fashions?

Inspiration by no means occurs by probability however comes from an everyday and focused change of views inside our group, through which every member contributes their inspiring and interesting experiences. One group member builds skateboards, for instance, whereas one other lived on a crusing boat for 2 years. I’d say it’s roughly break up between direct and oblique inspiration. Indirect inspiration includes the whole lot that fuels a spirit, which comes throughout within the supplies we use in addition to within the surfaces and the digital elements. Direct inspiration is within the structure or style, for instance. However, artistic debate throughout the group all through is essential.

How do new, sustainably produced supplies affect the design course of at MINI?

Our model design imaginative and prescient relies on our “creative mindset”, which consists of 4 guiding values: heartbeat, curiosity, duty and daredevil. These values stand for our fundamental rules reminiscent of heritage, curiosity for the brand new, sustainability and the braveness to face out from the group. For us, sustainability and the accountable use of sources don’t have anything to do with compromise, however moderately exploring new prospects in our artistic course of. Instead of supplies reminiscent of leather-based, we use various applied sciences that permit extra design freedom and individualisation, for instance via utilizing patterns or two-tone colors. The 3D knit is an instance of one of many central design parts impressed by the sneaker business. We are additionally changing parts: for instance, chrome with our new Vibrant Silver color for aesthetic causes.

Which of the MINI Aceman design improvements are you notably happy with?

Two issues specifically, and they’re each about dimension. The MINI Aceman may be very compact due to its very quick overhangs on the entrance and rear. Even so, the automobile is extraordinarily protected. This is the results of really excellent engineering work. But it’s not simply the issues you may see that make it particular. I’d additionally make specific point out of how the sense of house is introduced all through the inside to realize most lightness.

Are there any hidden design aspect that you’d solely see on nearer inspection?

The thought behind us hiding little Easter eggs was realizing that folks love discovering surprises. Not all the time in plain sight, however just a little additional down the road. Digital innovation permits for this form of playfulness: for instance, the navigation arrow will be depicted as a small MINI, or a big spinning file will be displayed on the central interface. And that’s how Spike was born, an animal good friend who has all the time been a loyal companion to the model. This gave rise to the concept of providing a type of digital companion. That’s how Spike bought on board the MINI and now lives within the show, so to talk.

What path would you like the MINI design to absorb the long run?

As a group, we imagine that our “creative mindset” will stay simply as related to us as a tenet for future merchandise. At the identical time, we’ll focus much more strongly on the worth of duty. Curiosity and duty – these are the values that we’re introducing into the minds of the following era.

If there was a product outdoors the automotive phase that you could possibly design – what wouldn’t it be?

Many issues come to thoughts, but when I had to decide on one, I’d say: a crusing boat. I’ve solely been crusing perhaps 5 occasions in my life, however I nonetheless have a fascination for open water and coping with the pure forces that prevail there. I designed a trimaran along with a fellow pupil for my diploma dissertation, with the query of whether or not it’s attainable to design “automotive” in an space of mobility that isn’t essentially confined to the highway – I imagine that there’s nonetheless monumental potential there.

By clicking off laps and staying out of hassle, the No. 14 workforce was capable of get again into the highest ten by midnight as different rivals confronted their very own points. Unfortunately, the automobile needed to retire in hour 16 of the 24-hour endurance occasion on account of overheating points and finally got here house eleventh.

Vasser Sullivan Driver Quotes

PARKER THOMPSON, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

How would you describe your efficiency and the workforce’s efficiency on the Rolex 24?

“Up until the last hour, the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team did absolutely everything right. From the drivers to the pit crew, the engineers, we were the definition of perfection. To have it go away like that has me lost for words honestly. I can’t thank my teammates enough. Particularly Aaron Telitz who did a triple stint there at the end. We wouldn’t have been in that position without his effort. The pit box did an amazing job to keep us in the top race all day long. Unfortunately, we have to wait another 12 months to get another crack at it.”

FRANKIE MONTECALVO, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

How was your race with the Lexus RC F GT3 earlier than what transpired within the final hour?

“It was a tough end to the day today. I feel like we were in the top two spots the entire time. It’s a hard blow to end this way. The No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team did a phenomenal job. Qualifying on pole and then controlling the race for a while. We didn’t have contact until something inadvertent later in the race, which provided some damage. To end like this is a tough one. We had a great run going and had some great points going for us. Going out of the race early like this is tough for us and the team. But I know the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team will get this thing back together and we’ll be ready for Sebring.”

AARON TELITZ, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

Can you’re taking us via the race for your self and all the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus workforce?

“I feel so bad for the Vasser Sullivan Lexus crew. I felt like we had a shot at the podium today. The whole team was operating at such a high level. To see it go away like that hurts a lot. My co-drivers did an amazing job throughout the race. Parker (Thompson), Frankie (Montecalvo) and Ritomo (Miyata) absolutely nailed their stints. Everyone contributed and the pit stops were excellent. Just a big bummer at the end, but I know this team will regroup and we’ll be hungry for Sebring.”

RITOMO MIYATA, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3

Can you describe your first expertise on the Rolex 24 and with the Vasser Sullivan Lexus workforce?

“I tried to take everything step-by-step since it was the first time for me at the Rolex 24 and with the Vasser Sullivan Lexus team. The main focus for my stints was to conserve the car overall, tires, fuel, brakes, everything else. Once we were able to do that, our focus shifted to the finish and the target was going for the win. Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way we had hoped.”

BEN BARNICOAT, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3

Can you describe the eventful Rolex 24 that the No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus workforce had?

“Yeah, obviously, on a day like today that we had as a group, team, and family, you can only look to the positives that came from this race. We had a great qualifying result last week and got to start the Rolex 24 from the front row for the first time and take the lead in the first corner, which was special. First stint felt like we had great pace in our Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3. We were in good control and comfortable, but what happened when Mike (Conway) was in the car was unavoidable. Wrong place, wrong time. That happens sometimes in motorsports. Just bummed for everyone that put so much effort into this race. We kept going after that incident to get as many points as we could. Fantastic job by the Vasser Sullivan crew to get the car ready to go. We were still able to get some points from the day and we did everything we could to maximize what we could. No one in this group deserves what happened to us and the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan RC F GT3 team today, but we are champions and we have a champion mindset. We have championship drive and we’re not going to let this race deter us from going on to achieve great things this year. We’re going to get our heads down and get ready for Sebring.”

MIKE CONWAY, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3

What occurred to take the No. 14 out of the race early?

“Really gutted we had the incident there in the first hour of the race. Not much I could do to avoid the spinning car in front of me. Maybe I could’ve seen it coming, but once it happened, I had nowhere to go. I’m really disappointed as I thought we had a good shot at the podium, so unfortunate we couldn’t achieve that. Also bummed for the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team as they had a great shot at a podium as well. Tough day for the entire Vasser Sullivan team, but they’re a strong team and they’ll come back swinging. Big thank you to Vasser Sullivan and Lexus for the opportunity to drive the car again. And thanks to Jack (Hawksworth), Ben (Barnicoat) and Kyle (Kirkwood) for helping me. Hopefully we get to do it again.”

Volkswagen’s Solid-state Battery Tests Yield Promising Results; Here’s What We Know

Move over, Toyota. Volkswagen Group could have taken the lead on solid-state batteries. The German auto producer has introduced that its battery, co-developed with California-based solid-state battery company QuantumScape, has handed its first exams. That’s proper, somebody within the auto {industry} has lastly gotten a solid-state EV battery out of the designing laboratory.

According to preliminary exams, the battery retained 95-percent of its capacity after being drained and recharged 1,000 occasions. While this doesn’t imply that each one Volkswagen EVs (together with upscale subsidiaries Porsche and Audi) can have solid-state batteries as of subsequent month, this nonetheless is large information for everybody who has been following the decades-long try and get SSBs onto the street.

Understanding The Difference Between Solid-State and Lithium-Ion Batteries

Solid-state battery expertise is the way forward for the EV battery {industry}, and it brings many benefits over at this time’s lithium-ion batteries.

In order to provide the newest and correct info attainable, the information used to compile this text was sourced from varied producer web sites and different authoritative sources, together with Car and Driver, MotorTrend, Electrek, and TopGear.

Volkswagen’s Solid-State Breakthrough: A Battery That Is Ready For Testing

  • Volkswagen has developed an SSB that stands as much as testing.
  • After 1,000 charging cycles, the battery retained 95-percent of its storage capability.
  • Volkswagen developed this battery in collaboration with an organization referred to as QuantumScape.

Volkswagen and its solid-state battery associate QuantumScape have made a solid-state EV battery that retains almost all of its capability after lengthy use. Or at the least, it held up effectively in a testing simulation of prolonged use. After draining and recharging the battery 1,000 occasions, it still had 95-percent of its original capacity. Volkswagen claims that it outperforms the “industry standard” of retaining 85-percent of its unique cost. However, the German automotive conglomerate doesn’t cite which customary it has exceeded.

QuantumScape: Volkswagen’s Solid-State Partner

QuantumScape is a solid-state battery developer based mostly in San Jose, California. Like almost each company entity that makes a speciality of SSBs, press releases name QuantumScape an “industry leader.” Since QuantumScape has managed to provide a tentatively roadworthy solid-state battery earlier than anybody else, the reward could also be deserved.

The firm was based in 2010, and entered right into a partnership with Volkswagen Group in 2012. In different phrases, it has been corporately and financially intertwined with Volkswagen almost since its founding. Volkswagen made headlines in 2018 for investing an eye-watering $100 million in its SSB associate.

A Battery With A Long Range And A Longer Lifetime

QuantumScape through YouTube

Volkswagen and QuantumScape haven’t introduced any driving vary specs for his or her solid-state battery. However, they declare that draining and recharging the battery 1,000 occasions simulated driving for 500,000 kilometers. Some fundamental arithmetic means that their battery will present a driving vary of round 500 kilometers per cost. (This interprets to a lifetime vary of about 310,000 miles, with 310 or so miles per cost).

While this doesn’t put its vary per cost on par with ICE automobiles, it does counsel that the battery will final a very long time earlier than it wants substitute (even when it must be recharged extra usually than one would refill a gasoline tank). Most automobiles take their ultimate trailer trip to the salvage yard lengthy earlier than they attain 500,000 kilometers (or 310,000 miles, relying on one’s area). If this battery lives as much as its preliminary exams, it might be good for the lifetime of the automotive.

Why Solid-state Batteries Are The Need Of The Hour

Solid-state batteries provide safer, denser, and faster-charging power storage, thus addressing the restrictions of lithium-ion batteries.

Other Car Companies Are Seeking Solid-State Success

Toyota
  • Toyota has been researching SSBs since 2010.
  • Honda has developed a battery that resists dendrites (an issue that kills many SSBs).
  • Other main automotive producers have entered SSB analysis partnerships.

Toyota has been the vanguard of SSB analysis, and likewise the corporate with essentially the most maddeningly sluggish progress. The Japanese stalwart of indestructible automobiles started engaged on solid-state EV batteries in 2010. In the following years, Toyota has racked up a formidable variety of patents co-credited with fellow Japanese firm Panasonic. More just lately, Toyota entered into an R&D partnership with petroleum company Idemitsu.

Toyota considerably infamously introduced that it might deliver a solid-state prototype to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Of course, the Olympics have been pushed again by a yr because of the pandemic. But regardless of getting a one-year extension, Toyota quietly introduced no batteries (solid-state or in any other case) to the Olympics in 2021.

Elsewhere in Japan, Honda has additionally been trying to make a viable SSB. Honda’s largest growth was to add an internal barrier layer that stops dendrites from forming contained in the battery. (Dendrites are one of many main causes of solid-state battery demise.) Nissan has additionally put a lot of effort into developing a viable solid-state battery, which it claims can be prepared for deployment by 2027 or 2028.

Nio’s Semi-Solid State Battery Has Made A 648-Mile Drive On A Single Charge

Perhaps essentially the most spectacular feat on the planet of solid-state batteries comes from Chinese EV producer Nio, who has put a semi-solid-state battery into manufacturing. Of course, a semi-solid state battery will not be a fully-solid state one. However, Nio has truly gotten its battery onto the road- and never only a sheltered proving floor.

The firm’s CEO livestreamed a 14-hour, 648-mile drive with out stopping to recharge the battery. The automotive nonetheless had three-percent of its cost on the finish of the journey.

The Rise Of Solid-State Joint Ventures

In these thrilling occasions for SSBs, it typically seems like anybody can kind a solid-state battery analysis agency and entice automotive executives who come bearing generously stuffed cash luggage. The lure of solid-state “wonder batteries” has tantalized a lot of the main corporations within the auto {industry}.

However, nobody has chosen to go at it alone. Every automaker dabbling in SSBs has completed so in collaboration with exterior corporations. Ford and BMW have jointly invested in a battery company called Solid Power. Hyundai has entered into a partnership with a different battery firm called Factorial Energy.

The Industry Wants Solid-State Batteries To Succeed, But They’re Not Ready Yet

Nissan Solid State battery creation

If one believes the {industry} hype, solid-state batteries will remedy all the issues of EVs. They weigh lower than lithium-ion batteries with the identical storage capability. They final far longer than lithium-ion batteries. They’re even much less vulnerable to fires than lithium-ion batteries (although lithium-ion batteries are already a lot safer than a car with a half-tank of gasoline).

Fast-charging would not put on them down as badly because it does lithium-ion batteries. SSBs additionally carry out effectively in extreme chilly, whereas lithium-ion batteries must heat up earlier than they’ll launch their power. In reality, the one downside it appears SSBs can’t remedy is the looming menace of a lithium scarcity.

The Difficulty Of Making Large SSBs

It needs to be famous that solid-state batteries are a reasonably outdated expertise. Up till now, they’ve solely been utilized in very small issues like listening to aids and (extra just lately) wearables. So far, they’ve resisted all makes an attempt to place them in something massive. This is clearly evidenced by the decades-long industry-wide efforts to place them into automobiles which might be solely barely beginning to repay.

In different phrases, nobody within the auto {industry} is attempting to invent a radical new battery expertise. They are as an alternative attempting to make solid-state batteries work in high-power units, which hasn’t been completed earlier than.

The Problem Of Electrode Contact

Solid State Batteries
BMW

One of the largest issues going through massive solid-state batteries is getting the electrolyte to contact the electrode. (In different phrases, making the a part of the battery that shops power contact the half that sends the power out to the automotive’s wiring.) If the electrolyte doesn’t contact the electrode, it will possibly’t ship any power out of the battery. With typical batteries, the electrolyte is a liquid (to be mildly pedantic, the electrolyte is extra usually a paste to forestall ruinous sloshing).

Basic science says {that a} liquid makes excellent contact with something it touches. To make this simpler to visualise, think about a bowl of water and a bowl of dry beans. The water will fully cowl any a part of the bowl it touches. But with the dry beans, there are massive areas the place nothing is touching the edges of the bowl. Wherever the battery’s electrolyte is not touching the electrode, it is not sending electrical energy via it.

Obviously, the issue of electrode contact isn’t insurmountable. However, it requires additional effort to beat a shortcoming that conventional lithium-ion batteries don’t have. This is a part of why Nio’s semi-solid state battery has already hit the street whereas the fully-solid state batteries haven’t but left the testing lab.

Nio’s design kind of suspends particles of the solid-state electrolyte in a liquid electrolyte. That permits for Nio to get the diminished weight and elevated capability of a solid-state battery with out forcing a stable electrolyte to contact the electrode in addition to a liquid would. (Obviously, semi-solid state batteries are extra complicated than that, however that’s the overall thought.)

The Industry’s Ongoing Obsession With Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries seem like the perfect answer to 2 of the largest objections many ICE drivers should “making the switch.” People usually fear in regards to the restricted driving vary and likewise the prohibitive price of changing a spent battery. The former objection is maybe a little bit of a fantasy since most EVs already recover from 200 miles per cost.

However, many individuals cherish the notion that they may take a protracted street journey (even when they by no means do). Even individuals who acknowledge that they solely drive 50-100 miles per day (if that) recognize a beneficiant security cushion of additional vary. (You by no means know once you would possibly want it.)

The Long Wait For SSBs

Despite the cumulative reams of patent filings, the more and more frantic output of press releases, and the astounding sums of cash thrown at solid-state batteries over greater than a decade, nobody has gotten one right into a automotive that has truly been bought.

Chrysler had higher success with its failed turbine engine program than anybody has managed to search out with SSBs. Before giving up, Chrysler truly acquired a fleet of Turbine automobiles onto the street. So far, nobody has managed to provide a solid-state EV. No one has even quickly bolted an SSB into an current electrical automotive and puttered round a proving observe someplace. (Or if somebody has, they did not need the press to know.)

Volkswagen Has Made One Small Step For Battery Development And One Giant Leap Of Progress

The most spectacular factor about Volkswagen’s battery is that it’s been examined. Granted, the battery has solely been subjected to rigorously managed laboratory situations. But given the frustratingly sluggish tempo of solid-state growth, Volkswagen has taken an enormous leap ahead by nudging its battery out of the lab (or at the least, from one part of the lab to a different). It’s too early to say that solid-state batteries are finally here, however they’re tantalizingly nearby.

Porsche Will Reportedly Stop Selling The Gas Macan In Most Of Europe

It’s often stricter emissions laws that result in the demise of a automotive within the European Union. However, that is not the rationale why the fuel Macan is about to get the proverbial axe.
