Mercedes-AMG A45 S

The interior of the Mercedes-AMG A45 S is based on the stylish cabin of the standard Mercedes A-Class. The stepped dashboard top, turbine-style air vents, and large twin screens of the MBUX infotainment system are all retained. However, in the AMG Plus specification, there are improved material quality and design enhancements.

The doors and dash feature expansive brushed aluminium sections, which contrast with the glossy black plastic panelling that surrounds the air vents and populates the centre console. In the Plus-spec cars, genuine leather upholstery replaces the microfibre and Artico leather combination, and striking yellow panelling and stitching add to the sporty aesthetic.

The seats in the Mercedes-AMG A45 S are firm and position the driver slightly higher in the cabin. However, they provide excellent support with ample bolsters, and the steering column offers plenty of adjustability.

The functionality of the cabin is also impressive. There are numerous storage cubbies throughout, and the rear seating area offers decent head and legroom, measuring at 690mm and 930mm, respectively. The boot has a capacity of 370 litres, the same as the standard A-Class, and it is 35 litres larger than the Audi RS3 Sportback, its closest rival.

The 2023 facelift of the A-Class range introduced two significant changes. The first is the removal of the trackpad for the MBUX infotainment system. The usability implications of this change are discussed further, but it should be noted that Mercedes did not utilize the freed-up space in the centre console effectively, as it only provides a tray that is slightly too small for most phones.

The other change is the introduction of the new-style AMG steering wheel, featuring a chunky rim and touch-sensitive spokes. The wheel feels comfortable in the hands, but the touch-sensitive surfaces can be easily activated unintentionally. In the A45, the wheel also includes two satellite pods for quickly switching drive modes and adjusting individual parameters, which is particularly convenient considering the multitude of modes available that genuinely alter the car’s dynamic character.

Multimedia system

The Mercedes MBUX infotainment system in the A45 S is impressive, featuring sharp graphics and fluid responsiveness on its two 10.25-inch displays. The integration with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is seamless.

In the 2023 model, the A-Class removes the trackpad on the centre console, replacing it with a shallow tray that is less useful. While the touch-screen interface is logical, the touch-sensitive surfaces on the steering wheel can be inconsistent in their response.

The S models also come with the AMG Track Pace app, which allows drivers to record lap times and analyze driving data. Additionally, the MBUX Augmented Reality function can project a racing circuit’s ideal racing line onto the head-up display, although this feature was not tested.

Upping The Coolness Quotient Quite Literally: Cars With Dual Zone Climate Control Under Rs 30 Lakh

Only one of the cars on this list offers this feature as standard, and the brand of the car may surprise you

Cars with dual-zone climate control

Cars have evolved significantly over the past few decades. They are no longer just a means of transportation, but also a place where we spend a significant amount of time. To enhance the in-cabin experience for occupants, carmakers, especially mass-market brands like Mahindra, Maruti, and Kia, have been equipping their cars with premium features, including dual-zone climate control. With the recent addition of dual-zone climate control in the Kia Seltos facelift, we have compiled a list of other cars priced under Rs 30 lakh that offer this luxury feature:

2023 Kia Seltos

The new Kia Seltos will be the first compact SUV in India to come equipped with dual-zone climate control. This luxury feature will be available from the higher-spec HTX variant onwards. The Kia Seltos is expected to be the most affordable car on the market with dual-zone air conditioning, at least until the facelifted Hyundai Creta is launched.

Price: Rs 15 lakh onwards (expected)

Mahindra XUV700

The Mahindra XUV700, launched in mid-2021, caused quite a stir among fans due to its extensive list of premium features that were previously only available in more expensive cars. It was the first Indian midsize SUV to offer integrated dual displays (10.25-inch each), advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and dual-zone climate control. Mahindra offers this comfort and convenience feature only on the range-topping AX7 variant of the SUV.

Price: Rs 20.56 lakh onwards

Mahindra Scorpio N

The Mahindra Scorpio N, launched in mid-2022, saw a significant increase in premium features compared to its predecessor. As part of the update, dual-zone climate control from the XUV700 was introduced. However, this feature is only available on the top-spec Z8 variant of the Scorpio N.

Price: Rs 18.05 lakh onwards

Jeep Compass

The Jeep Compass, launched in 2017, was one of the earliest models on this list to offer dual-zone climate control. The facelifted Compass now offers dual-zone AC on all variants except for the base-spec Sport. However, the variant lineup has been reduced, with the premium comfort starting from the Longitude variant.

Price: Rs 25.64 lakh onwards

Toyota Innova Hycross

The third-generation Toyota Innova, known as the Innova HyCross, surprised everyone with its unique characteristics and premium feature additions. One of these additions is the dual-zone climate control, which is available in the top-spec ZX and ZX (O) Hybrid variants. Unlike other models that offer dual-zone AC for the front occupants, the Innova Hycross splits the convenience feature between the front and second-row passengers.

Price: Rs 29.62 lakh onwards

Maruti Invicto

The Maruti Invicto, essentially the Toyota Innova Hycross underneath with some cosmetic revisions, offers most of the same premium comforts. This includes dual-zone climate control, which is available only on the range-topping Alpha+ variant. The Invicto marks Maruti’s entry into the premium space with prices starting above Rs 20 lakh.

Price: Rs 28.42 lakh

Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is the only model on this list to come with dual-zone climate control as a standard feature. It is also the most premium offering and, fortunately, the base variant falls within our price limit. Currently, it is the only car in Hyundai India’s lineup to offer this comfort and convenience feature, but we can expect the upcoming 2024 Creta to feature it as well.

Price: Rs 28.63 lakh

Do you consider dual-zone climate control as a valuable comfort in a car? Are there any other features from premium and luxury cars that you would like to see more of in mass-market models? Let us know in the comments.

Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 Challenges Michelin Pilot Sport 4S

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S has long been considered the standard for high-performance summer tires. It performs well on both the track and the street. However, Continental has recently introduced the ExtremeContact Sport 02 series as a competitor to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. Tyre Reviews set out to determine which one is better.

There are two main criticisms of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S: its price and age. Michelin launched the Pilot Sport 4S over eight years ago, which is quite old in terms of tire technology. Additionally, it is one of the most expensive performance tires, costing over $1,700 for a set of four. Michelin introduced the Pilot Sport S 5 this year as well, which is not a direct replacement but an evolution designed for high-performance hybrid and electric vehicles. Despite these factors, the Pilot Sport 4S still consistently performs well in comparison tests.

The Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 is priced about $200 lower than the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. While this price difference is significant, the performance difference between the old ExtremeContact Sport and the Pilot Sport 4S was always minimal. The Pilot Sport 4S had an advantage in terms of feel and steering response, which Continental claims to have improved with the new ExtremeContact Sport 02.

Tyre Reviews conducted a comparison using a new Honda Civic SI on both roads and tracks. Fitment Industry provided twelve sets of wheels for back-to-back testing. The goal was to evaluate both sets of tires in identical conditions both objectively and subjectively.

According to Tyre Reviews, there was no clear winner on the road. The Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S had distinct advantages that balanced each other out. Overall, it was difficult to choose a definitive winner.

On the track, the competition was still quite close. Tyre Reviews was impressed with the Continental tires, noting their responsiveness in initial turn-in and their excellent performance in high temperatures and wear. They didn’t have as much time with the Michelin tires but found the Pilot Sport 4S to be more responsive in mid-corner and exit transitions, particularly when paired with the Honda Civic SI’s locking differential.

Ultimately, the choice between these tires depends on what is most important to the driver. If price is a significant factor, the Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 is the clear choice. However, brand preference and personal preference in terms of feel and performance in specific driving conditions will ultimately determine the best tire for each individual.

2024 BMW X1 M35i: A Compact SUV with a Powerful Performance

The 2024 BMW X1 M35i is an impressive compact SUV that combines the luxurious features of a BMW with the sporty enhancements of the “M” series. It comes with various standard sportier tweaks, including the Adaptive M Suspension, which offers a balance between a smooth ride and the sportiness of M-sport cars. Additionally, it features 19-inch wheels, power-assisted sport steering, and the option for the high-performance M-Compound package, which includes larger brake rotors.

The standard equipment list of the 2024 BMW X1 M35i includes convenient features like wireless charging pads, a curved infotainment display running BMW Operating System 9, and a Harmon/Kardon sound system. However, there are also optional creature comforts available, such as heated seats, a moonroof, wood trim, and M Sport seats.

Priced at $49,900 (excluding the $995 destination charge), the 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive will be manufactured at BMW’s plant in Regensburg, Germany. It is scheduled to go on sale in October of this year.

BYD Dolphin

The BYD Dolphin, introduced in 2023, comes with standard adaptive cruise control and lane following. However, the system is not as smooth as some other options available in the market. One annoying feature of the Dolphin is its bongs and spoken message that scolds you for exceeding the speed limit, even if you actually haven’t. Unfortunately, turning off this feature can be a hassle. It would be better if there was a simple button to disable it.

Now, let’s talk about the Dolphin’s potential impact on the small EV market. Looking at its pricing, it seems that the Dolphin could be a game-changer.

The base Active model is priced at £25,490. However, we recommend avoiding it due to its torsion-beam suspension and lack of power. For an additional £1000, you can get the Boost model. The Comfort model, which comes with a larger battery, is priced at £29,490. Finally, the fully loaded Design model will set you back £30,990. Comparing to other options in this price range, such as the MG 4 EV, which has a different character, the Dolphin either offers a considerably larger size or a significantly longer range.

Speaking of range, the Dolphin impresses with its excellent range for a car of this size. In a road test of the Atto 3, we found that the efficiency indicator was overly optimistic. Therefore, we take the Dolphin’s claimed efficiency of 4.1 miles per kilowatt-hour (which translates to 249 miles of range) with skepticism. Nevertheless, achieving a comfortably doable range of 200 miles should not be a problem.

BYD aims for people to buy its cars based on style and individuality rather than just affordability. However, the current version of the Dolphin lacks the refinement in terms of multimedia, chassis, and some interior materials to truly impress. Nevertheless, its attractive pricing may make up for some of its flaws.

The Honda Prologue May Use GM’s EV Tech, But Its Dashboard Decisions Are Very Different

The upcoming 2024 Honda Prologue will come equipped with Google features, including Google Maps. This is separate from Android Auto, which also offers Google Maps. One of the standout features highlighted by Honda is that Google Maps can optimize long-distance routes based on EV recharging, finding charging stations along the way, and selecting the fastest route to them. Honda also mentioned that Google Maps will estimate the charging time needed to reach the destination and can initiate preconditioning of the EV battery when the destination is a DC fast charging station. This can significantly reduce fast charge times and allow drivers to travel long distances with minimal delays.

SOPHISTICATED UTILITY VEHICLE: ALL-NEW 2024 LEXUS GX REDEFINES SUV

  • First-ever Overtrail grade with standard 33-inch All-Terrain tires and 18-inch wheels
  • 3.4L twin-turbo V6 produces 349 horsepower; 479 lb.-ft. of torque
  • Hybrid powertrain to come later
  • Standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 and Lexus Interface with 14-inch multimedia touchscreen
  • Up to 8,000 lbs. towing capacity

AUSTIN, Texas (June 8, 2023) – Elevating the adventure-ready SUV segment is not a task taken lightly, but the all-new 2024 Lexus GX is up to the challenge with an unparalleled combination of elegant features, offroad capability, and the luxurious quality for which Lexus is known. Redesigned from the ground up, the GX builds on its 20 years in the Sport Utility Segment… making the case for the GX to be defined as a “Sophisticated Utility Vehicle.”

Today, a new legend is born as Lexus unveils the all-new, completely redesigned 2024 GX. The first-generation GX entered the North American market in 2002 as a force to be reckoned with in the mid-luxury SUV market. Lexus enthusiasts have praised its legendary off-road capability and its ability to tackle rough terrains, taking customers comfortably from errands to remote spaces.

“For more than two decades, the GX has bridged the gap between legendary off-road capability and luxurious everyday driving,” said Dejuan Ross, group vice president and general manager, Lexus division. “The GX is a critical piece in the evolution of the Next Chapter for Lexus, and with new powertrains, an impressive host of premium features, and the all-new Overtrail grade, the 2024 GX has something for everyone.”

The age-old saying is true: it’s about the journey; not the destination. The all-new GX was designed to inspire customers to pursue their urge to travel, take an unpaved path, immerse themselves in nature and revel in the joy of driving. As part of that journey, GX blazes the trail as the first vehicle to bring the global Lexus “Overtrail Project” to life. The 2024 GX builds upon the strong foundation created by the outgoing generation, and brings the intuitive technology, thoughtful interior touches, and continued off-road prowess that Lexus guests have come to expect.

Next Chapter Design

Rugged Yet Refined Exterior:

The all-new GX presents an unmistakably aggressive exterior design that exudes the tough, rugged persona that it has earned time and time again. Lexus designers were intent on expressing the off-road functionality of a true body-on-frame SUV. Their guiding light was envisioning GX customers enjoying refined outdoor experiences, and, as such, they were determined to design a GX that exemplifies the juxtaposition of a tough exterior with a calming, lux, and modern interior space.

The 2024 GX will be offered in six grades: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and all-new for Lexus, Overtrail and Overtrail+.

The 2024 GX introduces a noticeable change from the previous generation with a square-body profile with a horizontal design motif. From the front, the all-new GX continues the Lexus spindle body concept with an all-new bold, resolute design that also aids in off-roading functionality. To achieve the grounded, stable stance, designers created a taut body with a wide track and fender flares, pulling the front pillar base to the rear. The overall width increases by 3.74 inches (Overtrail by 4.52 inches) compared to the previous-generation GX. The Premium Triple Beam LED headlamps and grille opening have been raised to help avoid potential road impact. LED fog and cornering lamps are available for increased visibility. The front overhang has been decreased by 0.78 inches for improved clearance. The powerful front presence is led by the seamless grille and headlamp integration.

From the side, the 2024 GX presents a solid, powerful presence featuring a horizontally flowing body with an increased wheelbase of 2.36 inches. The A-pillar has been pulled back for increased visibility in addition to the lower belt line and improved ground clearance. The overall length of the 2024 GX is increased by 2.75 inches. Contributing to the strong presence are the hard-to-miss 33-inch tires with 18-inch wheels on the Overtrail grades for optimal off-road performance. Rear tread is increased by 3.26 inches for Premium and Luxury grades and 4.06 inches for the Overtrail grades.

At the back, the square, aggressive stance is continued with the signature unified L-shaped light bar. The updated LEXUS logo is a continuation of the Next Chapter design originally introduced on the 2022 NX. And, based on customer feedback, the all-new GX will feature a standard power rear lift door (GX first) with a pop-out window and an available kick sensor for hands-free convenience.

The 2024 GX will be offered in 11 exterior color options depending on grade: Eminent White Pearl, Nebula Gray Pearl, Atomic Silver, GX-first Incognito, Caviar, Nori Green Pearl, Nightfall Mica. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades will offer exclusive bi-tone exterior color combinations including Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, and Lexus-first Earth/Black Roof.

Lush Interior:

The all-new GX presents customers with the duality required of a luxury SUV – a rugged, capable exterior with the luxurious interior elements that help to create a road-trip oasis. No matter the length of the journey, drivers and passengers will reap the benefits of the modern and sophisticated interior. Featuring the driver-focused cockpit design also seen in the all-new RX, the all-new GX exhibits thoughtful elements that allow the driver the confidence to focus on the journey ahead.

A substantial improvement on the last generation model is the all-new lower, horizontal instrument panel design that carries into the dash for a simplified front and passenger seat experience, providing excellent front and side visibility. It provides a clean, open space that seamlessly connects the available Head-Up Display (HUD) to the center where the standard 14-inch Multimedia Touchscreen Display with Lexus Interface technology can be found. Physical dials for frequently used controls such as air conditioning and audio volume remain, and all available off-road controls are concentrated near the gear shifter to help minimize potential driver distraction. The 2024 GX comes standard with a wireless Apple CarPlay® Integration and Android Auto® compatibility, as well as a digital 12.3 Multi-Information Display (MID).

With seating for up to 7, the all-new GX incorporates thoughtful touches at every turn. Ergonomic measures have been implemented to help decrease load and work to aid driving posture through seat cushion, seatback bolster, and headrest improvements. The front seat hip point to heel height has been extended 1.18 inches.

The second row is available in two configurations: captain’s chairs or a 60:40 split-folding bench. A one-motion tumble system has been added for convenient access to the third row/luggage space. Heated and ventilated seats are standard in the driver and front passenger seats, with available heated second-row seats. The third row is available in both power and manual seat configurations. A rear seat reminder has been implemented for increased safety and convenience.

The earth-tone focused interior color design is intended to complement the nature just outside the vehicle’s doors. The 2024 GX is available in both a semi-aniline leather and NuLuxe® trimmed interior in Black, Dapple Gray, or Saddle Tan with black or dark brown grained trim. Overtrail grades are available in a GX-first color combination of Black NuLuxe® trimmed interior with Olive Ultrasuede accents or Chateau NuLuxe® trimmed interior with Olive Ultrasuede accents and black ornamentation.

Six illuminated charging ports (four in Overtrail) are available throughout and a wireless charger is available in the front console tray to complete the tech-focused interior. And of course, interior storage space has been increased in the center console, door pockets and up to 12 cupholders. Luggage space for both the second and third row configurations has improved compared to the previous generation, holding up to 5 suitcases with the 3rd row folded. Two additional storage spaces have been added under the cargo area to accommodate smaller items, and a 120V AC inverter has been added for additional power needs.

The 2024 GX comes standard with a 10-speaker premium surround sound system, with available 21- Speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound. Additional options (depending on grade) include: Digital Key*, Cool Box, Head-Up Display, Traffic Jam Assist**, Cold Area Package and Tonneau Cover.

GA-F Platform and Suspension

The 2024 GX shares the GA-F platform introduced on the current-generation LX 600. This strong and lightweight ladder frame increases body rigidity and improved on-road handling, key elements of Lexus Driving Signature. A newly developed double-wishbone front suspension is paired with a multi-link rear suspension to achieve both a high level of off-road driving performance and on-road prowess. An available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) constantly adjusts damping forces based on changing road conditions. GX adopts Electronic Power Steering (EPS) enabling increased steering feel on and off-road.

Legendary Offroad Performance

The GX has been known for its offroad prowess since the beginning, and the 2024 GX is no different. Standard Full-Time 4WD is adopted for consistent responsiveness in varied terrain with a Torsen® limited-slip center differential with locking feature. Overtrail grades add an electronic locking rear differential. When accelerating during a turn, the Torsen® differential optimally distributes the driving force according to the load on the rear left and right wheels to achieve a high level of controlled performance. In straight-line driving, it responds well to changes in road conditions, contributing to overall vehicle stability. Switching between 4hi and 4lo is now faster versus the previous generation due to enhancements on the electronic transfer case.

Evolved Engine: 3.4-L Twin Turbo V6 and Direct Shift-10AT

The all-new GX will be offered in two powertrain options to meet the needs of customers. At launch in the U.S., GX will come standard with a highly capable and efficient twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 engine paired with a 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission. The twin-turbo V6 produces an improved 349 horsepower, outperforming the previous generation V8’s 301 horsepower, and torque output also improves to a massive 479 lb.-ft. The twin turbochargers deliver steady and consistent acceleration to easily control power delivery in both on and off-road scenarios. Towing capacity has increased to 8,000 lbs. for Premium, Premium+ and Overtrail grades with the standard tow hitch.

A hybrid powertrain will be available in the U.S. at a later date.

First-Ever Lexus OVERTRAIL Grade

As expressed at the Tokyo Outdoor Show earlier this year, Lexus has introduced the first-ever “Overtrail Project,” an initiative that intends to inspire customers around the world to explore nature through refined adventures. The goal is to include more opportunities for Lexus customers in the future, including potential products, accessories, gear and experiences. The all-new Overtrail grade falls under the umbrella of this initiative.

Adding to an already tough and rugged exterior, the Overtrail and Overtrail+ models add a host of features and specialized styling. An eye-catching bi-tone exterior paint combination is available in Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, and Lexus-first Earth/Black Roof. The intention behind the color design was to create a cohesive relationship with the outdoors via calming earth tones that blend in with nature. Overtrail grades also feature standard 33-inch All-Terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels, black accented overfenders and a standard aluminum skid plate.

On the inside, the natural earth tones continue with Lexus-first Chateau with Olive Ultrasuede accents and a classic Black with Olive Ultrasuede accents for a luxurious touch. Overtrail+ grade will come standard with an exclusive seat design for optimal off-road comfort with available driver and front passenger massage seats and driver power cushion extender.

Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control (DAC), and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor systems are standard on GX Overtrail grades for optimal traction on the trails, along with an Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) for improved wheel articulation. An electronic locking rear differential is exclusive on OVERTRAIL for maximum traction.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0

For 2024, the all-new Lexus GX includes standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0.

The comprehensive suite of active safety equipment provides our highest level of driver support with features such as Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Road Sign Assist (RSA) and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). These technologies are designed to help, for example, alert you of a pedestrian or vehicle in the path of your Lexus or maintain a preset speed or following distance from a vehicle ahead.

The 2024 GX will be assembled at the Tahara plant in Japan and is expected to go on sale in early 2024.
