FIA WEC at Spa-Francorchamps: BMW M Team WRT suffers setbacks on the house spherical.

Spa-Francorchamps. With solar, summery climate, and a brand new FIA WEC attendance document (excluding 24h Le Mans) with 88,180 spectators trackside, the stage was set for BMW M Team WRT’s house race within the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC). However, the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (BEL), spherical three of the 2024 season, proved to be disappointing for the staff and for BMW M Motorsport. In the Hypercar class, the 2 BMW M Hybrid V8s completed in positions 11 and 13 after six hours of racing, which had been interrupted for practically two hours by a purple flag. The two BMW M4 GT3s, fielded by Team WRT within the LMGT3 class, retired by no fault of their very own.

In Friday’s qualifying, BMW M Team WRT managed to make it into the Hyperpole session with a Hypercar, simply as they did on the second spherical at Imola (ITA). That meant BMW M works drivers Robin Frijns (NED), Sheldon van der Linde (RSA) and René Rast (GER) began the six-hour race from ninth place within the #20 BMW M Hybrid V8. Their team-mates, Dries Vanthoor (BEL), Marco Wittmann (GER), and Raffaele Marciello (SUI) began from twelfth place with the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8.

Following robust performances at Imola, the purpose was to problem for a podium once more at Spa-Francorchamps. However, the race proved difficult for each crews of the BMW M Hybrid V8s, and so they weren’t capable of make progress by the sphere. Consequently, automotive #15 completed in eleventh place after six hours of racing, whereas automotive #20 ended up in thirteenth place.

In the LMGT3 class each Team WRT BMW M4 GT3s, following their 1-2 end result at Imola, had possibilities for podium finishes however their race was ended prematurely by no fault of their very own. In the LMGT3 Hyperpole, Ahmad Al Harthy (OMA) secured second place on the grid for the #46 BMW M4 GT3, which he shares with Valentino Rossi (ITA) and Maxime Martin (BEL). However, within the race, automotive #46, whereas operating in fourth place, was closely hit on account of a sequence response following an unlucky racing incident and crashed into the observe barrier. Car #31 of Augusto Farfus (BRA), Sean Gelael (INA), and Darren Leung (GBR), steadily progressed from twelfth on the grid, however was additionally closely impacted by one other automotive whereas in fourth place after over 4 hours of racing. Following this incident, the race was red-flagged for practically two hours as in depth repairs to the observe boundaries had been required. Al Harthy and Gelael, who had been on the wheel on the respective instances, remained unharmed.

The fourth of eight races within the FIA WEC 2024 season, the 24 Hours of Le Mans (FRA), will happen on fifteenth/sixteenth June.

Reactions to the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps:

Franciscus van Meel (CEO of BMW M GmbH): “This weekend didn’t go as we had hoped. After Imola, it was a setback. We started fairly well, had a lot of bad luck, but also made some mistakes ourselves. Now, it’s time to look ahead. The next race is Le Mans, and with all the bad luck we’ve had here, maybe we’ll have more good luck there.”

Andreas Roos (Head of BMW M Motorsport): “It was overall a challenging weekend here at Spa. The pace of our BMW M Hybrid V8 was definitely there, but unfortunately, we couldn’t convert that into a good result. I think we simply made too many mistakes during the race which we now need to analyse in detail. However, it was good to see that the speed was there again. We continue to work hard to come back even stronger. In the LMGT3 class, it was, of course, very disappointing that both cars were involved in accidents that were not their fault and consequently retired. After the very good result with the 1-2 at Imola, this is naturally a hard setback for the LMGT3 crew as a strong result with important points would have been possible again here at Spa. Thanks to BMW M Team WRT and BMW M Motorsport for their hard work so that we can get closer to our goal of winning races.”

Vincent Vosse (BMW M Team WRT Team Principal): “I think that we have got some good information to take with us but one of those bits of information is that you cannot make a good result without having a clean race, and unfortunately we did not have a clean race. We have to analyse why and make it better. In LMGT3, it was a real shame to see how much work we have put together with the #31 and #46 cars and that was gone and not through the fault of our drivers. It is tough to swallow. Now let’s see what we can do at Le Mans to recover all of those points we have lost here.”

Raffaele Marciello (#15 BMW M Hybrid V8, eleventh place Hypercar): “It has been a difficult race. We were fighting for points and were running in the top ten. Then unfortunately, I made a mistake and we got a penalty. That was quite unfortunate but let’s see how to improve and to do better next time.”

René Rast (#20 BMW M Hybrid V8, thirteenth place Hypercar): “It was not a great day. Everything went wrong somehow. We got a lot of penalties and have always been kind of at the wrong end of everything. A technical issue, penalties, so overall no points today. We need to learn from that. I think that pace wise, we were in the mix. That is one positive at least but we just need to perform better and make less mistake and hopefully in the next race we will be better.”

Augusto Farfus (#31 BMW M4 GT3, DNF LMGT3): “All drivers in the #31 executed a very good race. Every single driver fulfilled his own task. Unfortunately, we’ve got both LMGT3 cars taken out by Hypercars and that should be a sign that this is something that needs to be reacted to.”

Maxime Martin (#46 BMW M4 GT3, DNF LMGT3): “It’s a pity. We’re certainly not at Spa to retire after one and a half hours. But it’s part of the game, that’s racing. It’s indeed a shame because Ahmad was doing a good job and we could have scored some important points. But that’s the way it is. Now we focus on the next race, the most important, the 24 hours of Le Mans.”

BMW M Team WRT Tests BMW M Hybrid V8 at Spa-Francorchamps, BMW M4 GT3 EVO Expected in 2025

The BMW M Team WRT continued its preparation for the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) by conducting three days of testing at Spa-Francorchamps. The testing sessions provided valuable insights for the BMW M Hybrid V8, which is set to compete in the FIA WEC in 2024. Simultaneously, BMW M Motorsport also tested the BMW M4 GT3 EVO, the upgraded successor to the current BMW M4 GT3, which will hit the race tracks in the 2025 season.

During the testing, eight BMW M works drivers took turns behind the wheel of both vehicles. Robin Frijns, Maxime Martin, René Rast, Marco Wittmann, and Nick Yelloly drove the BMW M Hybrid V8, with Yelloly and Wittmann bringing their experience from racing the LMDh prototype in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship 2023. Meanwhile, Augusto Farfus, Jens Klingmann, and Bruno Spengler tested the BMW M4 GT3 EVO.

For the BMW M Team WRT, the focus was on optimizing systems and performance for the BMW M Hybrid V8. The team is still in the process of familiarizing themselves with the complex vehicle, like most drivers.

As for the BMW M4 GT3 EVO, the testing phase has started early, and BMW M Motorsport plans to work intensively on refining the already successful BMW M4 GT3 throughout the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The emphasis will be on expanding vehicle functionalities, enhancing component reliability, improving handling, and further enhancing drivability for the teams.

After the test, Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the BMW M Hybrid V8 testing. He emphasized the benefits of having the vehicle in race action in the IMSA series and testing in Europe, as it provides a dual pool of experiences that benefits all sides. Vincent Vosse, Team Principal of BMW M Team WRT, also praised the successful test days and the valuable learning experiences gained.

Robin Frijns, a BMW M works driver, mentioned his ongoing learning process with the BMW M Hybrid V8 and the significant progress made during testing at Spa-Francorchamps. Bruno Spengler, another BMW M works driver, expressed his excitement about being involved in the development of the BMW M4 GT3 EVO from the beginning and highlighted the improvements in drivability and tire durability.

After completing 537 laps, Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann, and Nick Yelloly drove the #98 BMW M4 GT3 to victory, giving BMW their 25th overall win in the event. Eng claimed his third Spa triumph for BMW, while Wittmann celebrated his first 24-hour race win and Yelloly added to his endurance victory from the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2020.

The BMW M4 GT3 teams had to make up ground after heavy rain during qualifying forced them to miss out on Super Pole. The BMW M Team WRT and the #998 BMW M4 GT3 of ROWE Racing made impressive progress early on, battling for top positions. The eventual winners faced setbacks but made an impressive comeback, ultimately taking the lead during the night and securing the victory.

The #46 BMW M4 GT3 from BMW M Team WRT finished in sixth place, having shown strong speed throughout the race but receiving time penalties. The #30 BMW M4 GT3 from the WRT team secured second place in the Gold Cup category. The #31 BMW M4 GT3 finished 25th overall.

A collision between the #998 BMW M4 GT3 from ROWE Racing and the #32 BMW M4 GT3 from BMW M Team WRT resulted in heavy damage to both vehicles. Fortunately, both drivers remained unharmed, but repairs to the barriers led to a two-hour yellow period.

Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, praised the team’s performance and the victory for the BMW M4 GT3. Hans-Peter Naundorf, Team Principal of ROWE Racing, highlighted the difficulty of the race and the consistency of the team’s performance. Winning this significant race in the second year of the BMW M4 GT3 project was a significant achievement. Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann, and Nick Yelloly expressed their joy and gratitude for the victory, with Wittmann celebrating his long-awaited first 24-hour race win.

Valentino Rossi, who drove the #46 BMW M4 GT3, expressed his happiness with the race and the team’s improvement from the previous year. Charles Weerts, driver of the #32 BMW M4 GT3, expressed disappointment and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the accident. Neil Verhagen, driver of the #998 BMW M4 GT3, expressed relief that both drivers were unharmed but expressed frustration at the loss of two cars with a chance of winning.

Spa is the biggest GT3 race in the world and winning there is highly esteemed. With our top-class teams and 12 BMW M works drivers, the conditions are favorable for us. ROWE Racing and BMW M Team WRT have had many wins and podiums in the GT World Challenge Europe and Intercontinental GT Challenge races so far. I’m cheering for our pro teams and the WRT and Walkenhorst Motorsport crews in other classes. It’s a source of pride that there will be seven BMW M4 GT3s on the starting grid, thanks to the hard work of every BMW M Motorsport employee.”

Dries Vanthoor (#32 BMW M4 GT3, BMW M Team WRT): “We are all extremely motivated to have a good weekend at Spa with our strong driver lineup. Our warm-up test went well, and the car feels good on the track. Our first goal is to make it through the night without any incidents. Then we’ll assess our position. It would be a dream come true to win my home event in Belgium. Together with the whole team, we will give our all to try and achieve this.”

Maxime Martin (#46 BMW M4 GT3, BMW M Team WRT): “I’m really looking forward to racing at my home event with BMW M Motorsport once again. I’m curious about the weather, as it can be unpredictable in the Ardennes. With Augusto and Vale, I have two fantastic drivers by my side, and I want to try and win the 24h Spa-Francorchamps with them, just like I did with BMW in 2016.”

Philipp Eng (#98 BMW M4 GT3, ROWE Racing): “It would be amazing to celebrate my third win with BMW and the third ROWE Racing win in Spa. I’m really excited about the event; it’s always a highlight of the season. Our first two races in the GT World Challenge Europe were fantastic, with a first and third place finish. We are heading into the weekend as championship leaders and aim to gather as many points as possible to stay in the running for the overall win at the end of the year.”

Neil Verhagen (#998 BMW M4 GT3, ROWE Racing): “I’m super excited for the 24 Hours of Spa this year. It’s like a comeback, the second time with the BMW M4 GT3. We had a pretty good season last year and aim to build on that success. We’ll approach the race the same way as last year, with a clean race and minimal errors. We know we have the speed; we had it last year. It’s one of my favorite races of the year, and I can’t wait to get back on the track at Spa-Francorchamps.”

24H SPA EWC Motos: BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team Claims Another Podium at Spa-Francorchamps

The BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team had a successful home race at Spa-Francorchamps, as they finished on the podium once again. After 24 hours of intense racing, Markus Reiterberger, Ilya Mikhalchik, and Jérémy Guarnoni secured third place with their BMW M 1000 RR at the 24H SPA EWC Motos, the second round of the 2023 FIM Endurance World Championship. This follows their previous third-place finish at the opening race weekend in Le Mans. The team is currently ranked third in the Team world championship standings, 33 points behind the leaders.

In the qualifying sessions, the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team showed strong performance, securing second place on the grid. However, they faced challenges during the race, with safety car phases causing them to lose time after pit stops. Despite this setback, the team consistently battled their way back through the field, eventually climbing to fourth place. They maintained this position throughout the night, delivering good lap times and efficient fuel consumption. With three and a half hours remaining, they inherited third place when the Suzuki team ahead of them encountered technical issues. The BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team successfully defended their position until the end, even in the face of rain in the closing stages of the race.

The Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team, fresh from their victory in the Superstock class at the season-opener in Le Mans, also had a promising start at Spa-Francorchamps. However, they faced a setback when forced into the garage due to a technical issue. Despite efforts to repair the bike, they eventually had to retire from the race during the night.

The private BMW Team LRP Poland, racing with the BMW S 1000 RR, experienced various issues throughout the race but managed to push through and reach the finish line after 24 hours of racing.

The next race, the 8 Hours of Suzuka in Japan, will take place on August 6th.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, Marc Bongers, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s third-place finish, noting the unfortunate situations caused by safety car periods. He praised the team’s performance, emphasizing their ability to fight back and the reliability of the motorcycle. Bongers acknowledged the need to improve their speed to reach the top position and shared disappointment for the Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team’s inability to finish the race due to technical problems.

Werner Daemen, Team Manager of the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team, described the race as hectic, highlighting their bad luck with safety car periods in the beginning. However, he commended the impressive performance of the riders and mechanics and expressed gratitude to BMW for providing a reliable bike for the 24 hours. Daemen emphasized the team’s focus on the upcoming race in Japan and their aim to achieve another strong result.

Markus Reiterberger, one of the riders, reflected on their second-place qualification and the challenges faced during the race. He mentioned struggling with grip in high temperatures but remained error-free throughout the race, eventually securing third place. Reiterberger expressed gratitude to the team and acknowledged the tough and long race they had completed on the podium.

Ilya Mikhalchik, another team member, expressed happiness with their overall speed during the race, despite losing time due to safety car pit lane exits. He praised the team for avoiding mistakes and looked forward to a good position in the upcoming race in Japan.

Jérémy Guarnoni, also a part of the team, celebrated the second consecutive podium finish but acknowledged their lack of luck with the safety car, causing them to lose contact with the front riders. Nonetheless, Guarnoni expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and the speed of his teammates.

24H SPA EWC Motos: BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team extra motivated ahead of FIM EWC home round.

The BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team is returning to the scene of its greatest success to date. This weekend, the 24H SPA EWC Motos (BEL) forms round two of the FIM Endurance World Championship 2023 (FIM EWC). Last year, the team and its riders Markus Reiterberger (GER), Ilya Mikhalchik (UKR), and Jérémy Guarnoni (FRA) claimed a historic victory in the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps. The success at the team’s home event was not only the first win in a 24-hour race for Werner Daemen’s (BEL) outfit but also the first time a European manufacturer had won over this distance for several decades. All set for its first appearance at the event is the Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team. They start in the Superstock class of the FIM EWC and are making their debut on the Ardennes rollercoaster at Spa-Francorchamps.

This season, the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team is running the new version of the BMW M 1000 RR. The three regular riders – Reiterberger, Mikhalchik, and Guarnoni – immediately finished on the podium in the first race with the new bike when the trio came home third on the #37 M RR at the opening round of the 2023 season, the 24 Hours of Le Mans (FRA) in mid-April. The team is now extremely motivated ahead of the second race of the season at the iconic racetrack, which is just a one-hour drive from the Belgian team’s base. The fourth rider at Spa-Francorchamps is Vincent Lonbois (BEL). Over the course of his career, the 32-year-old has spent many years riding BMW motorcycles at racetracks and on the road racing scene. In 2016, he was crowned champion in the International Road Racing Championship (IRRC) with the BMW S 1000 RR. He also finished runner-up in the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy in the same year.

The new Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team, in which the French Tecmas Racing Team and its owner Arnaud Sassone (FRA) is collaborating with Werner Daemen’s company Motorcycle Racing Parts and BMW Motorrad Motorsport, made a dream start to its debut season in the FIM EWC at Le Mans. Kenny Foray (FRA), Jan Bühn (GER), and Loïc Arbel (FRA) took victory in the Superstock class with the #9 BMW M 1000 RR. The team is now entering uncharted territory at Spa-Francorchamps. Although the Tecmas Racing Team has contested individual races in the FIM EWC in the past, it did not start the 24H SPA EWC Motos last year.

The race weekend at Spa-Francorchamps begins with free practice on Friday morning. The grid positions will then be determined in the two-part qualifying on Friday afternoon. The race itself gets underway on Saturday at 14:00 (CEST). As well as the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team and the Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team, private BMW outfit Team LRP Poland also competes at the 24H SPA EWC Motos.

Quotes ahead of the 24H SPA EWC Motos.

Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “It goes without saying that last year’s fantastic victory remains a memorable one. We are now back in the Ardennes to face this special challenge again. We have shown that we can be successful at the home circuit for the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team, and are obviously hoping for a similar result this year. The current season got off to a successful start with the new BMW M 1000 RR at Le Mans, with third place overall for the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team and the debut victory in the Superstock class for the Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team. We now travel to Spa-Francorchamps well prepared. The law of any 24-hour race obviously also applies here – namely that anything can happen. However, as far as the riders, teams, and machinery are concerned, we are well prepared and very confident ahead of the weekend.“

Werner Daemen, Team Manager BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team: “We are expecting a hot week at Spa–Francorchamps. The weather forecast is perfect. Last week, we had a successful pre-test. I was a little bit worried about the weather but the new BMW M 1000 RR also looks very good in hot conditions this year. So I think that we are well prepared for defending our good result from last year and hopefully, we also have the necessary luck.”

Markus Reiterberger: “Spa-Francorchamps is the home event for our team, and it is practically the home race for us too. Spa is a really great racetrack, and we have very fond memories of the circuit after last year’s victory. We completed a two-day function test there at a hobby event, during which we gained our first impressions of the new bike at this track. We now continue with the final tests, in which we will work on fine-tuning. As a team, I believe we are better positioned than ever. We are ready. We want to at least finish on the podium, but would obviously prefer to win. That is the goal we have set ourselves. The weather forecast is good, the team is super. There is nothing to stop us from being successful, and we will do everything we can to make that the case.”

Ilya Mikhalchik: “I am looking forward to a great race weekend at Spa on a beautiful track. I can’t wait to get back there with our new beautiful bike. Let’s hope for a good weekend and to enjoy riding our BMW M 1000 RR there. We want to show good speed over the entire weekend and to do a good job during the race. It would be great to finish the race on Sunday with a strong result.”

Jérémy Guarnoni: “The target for Spa is clear; like always, we want to win. We know that it is a track we are really fast on. Last year we won there, so obviously the goal is to repeat that. That would be really amazing. It is also a special race for us because it is the team’s home race. This gives us extra motivation. We know that in dry conditions, we are really fast there so let’s see what will happen. I am confident. At the pre–test, we saw that all is okay. Everything is on point so let’s see.”

Arnaud Sassone, Team Owner Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team: “We arrive at Spa-Francorchamps as the championship leader and with an advantage of eleven points. That is perfect, but it does put us under extra pressure, which we must manage. This race at Spa is a first for my team of technicians, but we have worked hard and listened to our riders in order to be well prepared. BMW Motorrad has been successful at Spa in the past, with the overall victory for the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team last year. Our three Tecmas riders, led by their leader Kenny Foray, are a well-oiled team, which is both fast and capable of providing the engineers with precise information. They are also in great form and very motivated. All three of them are very familiar with the track in the Ardennes. Kenny took part in qualifying with the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team in 2022, while Loïc Arbel finished runner-up in the overall standings on the Tati Team’s Kawasaki. And Jan Bühn has been a regular at the Spa circuit for years.”
