Read: Stories Of Honda’s 2023 Global Technician Contest Finalists And Winners

The Honda Global Technician Contest has concluded. Around 89,000 service staff members from across the globe applied to participate in the contest, but only 23 were chosen to compete at the Honda Technical College Kanto in Fujimino city. Initially, there were six finalists, and after the finals, two winners emerged victorious.

The competition took place on October 8, 2023, with 23 top service specialists competing in two categories: Commuter and FUN. Although Honda has organized localized competitions for its service staff in the past, this contest marked the first time that the Japanese brand decided to make it a worldwide event.

Two models were fielded by Honda, including a Super Cub 110 and a CB650R (not the new one, just in case you’re wondering). The Super Cub was used for the Commuter category while the CB650R was used for the FUN category. Honda plans to organize this contest every four years.

The winners and other finalists were asked a round of questions about their experiences with Honda’s team.

Commuter Category Winner: Masngudin (Indonesia)

Honda Global Technician Contest 2023 - Masngudin

Q: Please tell us why you wanted to become a Honda Service staff member in the first place?

I originally studied automotive at a technical school and had a strong interest and passion for technical things. I wanted to work for AHASS to improve my technical skills, gain knowledge related to abnormal noise and vibration diagnosis, and contribute to the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Indonesia with the most extensive user and after-sales network.

Q: What do you find most rewarding and thrilling about being a service staff member?

“I feel a sense of pride and fulfillment when a customer is pleased and wants to return to my shop again, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in the job.”

Q: What made you and how did you decide to compete in the Technician Contest?

“To experience world-class competition and check my skill level while competing with other service staff members from around the world.”

Q: Is there anything you practice on a daily basis to improve your skills?

“Three months prior to the competition, I started training twice a week for physical fitness and practicing for the competition. I also held a training camp for mental preparation and to be ready to take on the challenge with very high motivation.”

Q: What’s your feeling about winning the competition?

“To be honest, I did not think I would win. The major contributing factors were learning and practicing knowledge and skills, maintaining physical endurance and strength, and practicing in various ways.”

FUN Category Winner: Wu Chun-Yi (Taiwan)

Q: Please tell us why you wanted to become a Honda service staff member in the first place?

“When I was around 18 years old, I was given a 125cc motorcycle that was in poor condition. I repeatedly repaired the motorcycle by myself and felt a great sense of accomplishment, which inspired me to become a motorcycle service staff member.”

Q: What do you find most rewarding and thrilling about being a service staff member?

“I find it rewarding to use my specialized knowledge to solve problems and ensure that the motorcycle maintains its original performance, which gives me a great sense of accomplishment.”

Q: What made you and how did you decide to compete in the Technician Contest?

“I wanted to interact with contestants from all around the world and see where I stood among Honda service staff members.”

Q: Is there anything you practice on a daily basis to improve your skills?

“I verify things by reading manuals and repairing my own motorcycles. I think it’s more important to face each repair case properly than to think and act on “what kind of technician I want to be.”

Q: What’s your candid feeling in winning the competition?

“I’m really happy! After observing the highest levels in technical skills from every technician in this competition, I’m honestly shocked that I was able to win. But I feel that I should not be satisfied with this, and I’d like to continue to further hone my skills and apply them to my job.”

Other finalists were asked about the most rewarding and thrilling aspects of being a service staff member.

Honda Global Technician Contest 2023 - Xing Deqing

“I find it rewarding when customers say “thank you” after returning their repaired vehicle. I also feel great pleasure in this job when I’m able to solve a difficult problem. And most importantly, I really love motorcycles and the whole process in maintaining and repairing them,” said Xing Deqing (China), Commuter Category finalist.

Britain’s Best Driver’s Cars 2023

Our annual best driver’s car contest always brings some surprises, including a 2.1 tonne super saloon from Audi and a sub-900kg Peugeot which highlights the diversity of the competition.

Although the cars ranked below are not direct competitors, each has been chosen for excelling in driving ability. Some, however, outperform the others.

Our team of road testers; Matt Prior, James Disdale, Richard Lane, Illya Verpraet and Andrew Frankel, will provide first-hand experience of what it’s like to pilot each of these cars at the limit.

Below is a selection of what we believe are the best driver’s cars, unmatched in their capabilities on both road and track.

1. Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato

Judges were impressed by the unique feel of the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, which retained a sense of control without sacrificing everything for adhesion. However, there was some concern about its performance on the track, as cars that perform exceptionally on the road may not always deliver the same standard on the track.

Surprisingly, the V10-powered Sterrato performed well on the track at Anglesey, demonstrating confidence-inspiring handling. Even with its 601bhp, it was highly adjustable and exploitable, earning praise from the judges for its precision hooliganism.

Despite not being a track-day car, the Sterrato excelled with its specific brand of performance.

2. Ariel Atom 4R

On wet test roads, the Ariel Atom 4R demonstrated its exceptional speed, although it was challenging to exploit its full potential. With the added benefits of ABS and traction control, it provided a reassuring driving experience, despite the sense that it was designed for more and simply waiting for the right moment to shine.

Google encourages Play Store users to vote for their favorite Android apps in 2023

In the games category, the Users’ Choice awards are expected to be highly competitive. One game that might influence the voters’ decision is “Street Fighter Duel – Idle RPG” by Crunchyroll Games. This strategy-based team fight game features popular characters like Ken, Ryu, and Chun Li from the well-known “Street Fighter” franchise. The latest installment of the franchise, “Street Fighter 6,” was also released earlier this year.

“Mighty Doom,” a mobile-friendly adaptation of the iconic “Doom” franchise by Bethesda, offers players a third-person kill-em-all experience. In this highly-rated game, players assume the role of the chainsaw-wielding protagonist known as the “Doomslayer” as they battle hordes of hellspawn.

Another strong contender is EA’s “The Lord of the Rings: Heroes,” which brings Tolkien’s fantasy world to life on mobile screens. However, the game’s reputation has been somewhat tarnished due to aggressive microtransactions. The remaining game contenders for the Users’ Choice award are “Aether Gazer,” “Arena Breakout,” “Cat Snack Bar: Cat Food Tycoon,” “Farlight 84,” “Honkai: Star Rail,” “MONOPOLY GO!,” and “Viking Rise.”

The Honda Customs contest, which was meant to collaborate young artists and established motorcycle tuners, saw a total of seven entries in display.

Our previous story highlighted all of the builds, which showcased unique personality and craftsmanship from various artists and builders across Europe. That being said, the online votation doesn’t lie, and there’s a clear winner: the Honda Dax Furiosa by Portugal’s Tamara Alves and custom workshop Art on Wheels Garage. The custom Honda Dax garnered 34 percent of all the votes during the contest.

Honda Customs Contest: Dax Furiosa Takes The Crown

The Honda Dax Furiosa is a custom mini-bike that takes attention to detail to a whole new level. It features a post-apocalyptic theme, looking like it came straight off the set of Mad Max. It features an incredibly realistic patina, achieved by skilled paintwork giving the entire body a rusty, well-weathered look. The addition of graffiti-style artwork, as well as a custom exhaust pipe with a metal grill further add to the bike’s dystopian vibe.

Commenting on the Honda Customs contest, Masayuki Hamamats, General Director of Motorcycles at Honda Motor Europe, praised the collaborative efforts between young artists and moto builders saying, “The strong reaction to these seven incredibly diverse creations is an encouraging sign of how motorcycles really pique people’s interest when they are given the opportunity to get “in touch” with them. ‘Furiosa’ is a well-deserved and compelling winner and we are very grateful to all the artists and trainers involved from these seven different countries – and to the more than 15,000 people who voted.”

Honda Customs Contest: Dax Furiosa Takes The Crown

All in all, 15,924 votes were cast in this year’s Honda Customs Contest. There have been four winners of the Honda Customs contest over the course of the past four years, with the Honda Dax Furiosa being the first and only mini-bike thus far. It joins the likes of the Rebel “Maanboard,” CB650R “Fenix,” and CB1000R Africa Four in the lineup of winners in Honda Motor Europe’s Customs contest.

BMW M Motorsport is set to compete in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (BEL) this weekend, with a strong team of drivers and teams aiming for the 25th overall win for the BMW brand in the Ardennes region. With 24 previous wins, BMW holds the record and has a good chance of continuing their success at the largest GT3 race in the world. In the Pro category, BMW M Team WRT and ROWE Racing, with two BMW M4 GT3s each, along with 12 BMW M works drivers, will be competing for the top spot on the podium on Sunday. There will be a total of seven BMW M4 GT3s on the starting grid.

Belgium’s BMW M Team WRT will be making their debut at their home event with the BMW M4 GT3 and will be fielding four cars. Maxime Martin, Dries Vanthoor, and Charles Weerts, along with Valentino Rossi, Sheldon van der Linde, and Augusto Farfus, will be representing Belgium in the two Pro cars. BMW M Team WRT has had a challenging season so far in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS (GTWC) Endurance Cup races and is hoping to secure their first podium at Spa-Francorchamps. On the other hand, they had a successful Sprint Cup race at Brands Hatch with three podium finishes, including Valentino Rossi’s first in the GTWC. The 24h Spa-Francorchamps is the highlight of both the GTWC Europe and the Intercontinental GT Challenge seasons. In the previous race at Kyalami, BMW M Team WRT achieved a one-two result in the series.

ROWE Racing has a strong track record at Spa-Francorchamps and in the GTWC Europe Endurance season. The team has won at Spa-Francorchamps twice (2016 & 2020) and finished in second place twice as well (2018 & 2019). Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann, and Nick Yelloly currently lead the driver standings of the Endurance Cup after their victory in Monza and third place in Le Castellet. The members of the BMW Junior Team and BMW M works drivers Dan Harper, Max Hesse, and Neil Verhagen are also contributing to ROWE Racing’s lead in the team standings of the Endurance Cup.

Andreas Roos (Head of BMW M Motorsport): “After the Nürburgring and Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps is the third iconic endurance race in the span of a few weeks. Spa is the biggest GT3 race in the world and winning there is highly esteemed. With our top-class teams and 12 BMW M works drivers, the conditions are favorable for us. ROWE Racing and BMW M Team WRT have had many wins and podiums in the GT World Challenge Europe and Intercontinental GT Challenge races so far. The BMW M4 GT3 has proven to be competitive on every track. We want to convert this potential into victory and win the first 24-hour classic with our new GT3 flagship. I’m cheering for our pro teams and the WRT and Walkenhorst Motorsport crews in other classes. It’s a source of pride that there will be seven BMW M4 GT3s on the starting grid, thanks to the hard work of every BMW M Motorsport employee.”

Dries Vanthoor (#32 BMW M4 GT3, BMW M Team WRT): “We are all extremely motivated to have a good weekend at Spa with our strong driver lineup. Our warm-up test went well, and the car feels good on the track. Our first goal is to make it through the night without any incidents. Then we’ll assess our position. It would be a dream come true to win my home event in Belgium. Together with the whole team, we will give our all to try and achieve this.”

Maxime Martin (#46 BMW M4 GT3, BMW M Team WRT): “I’m really looking forward to racing at my home event with BMW M Motorsport once again. I’m curious about the weather, as it can be unpredictable in the Ardennes. With Augusto and Vale, I have two fantastic drivers by my side, and I want to try and win the 24h Spa-Francorchamps with them, just like I did with BMW in 2016.”

Philipp Eng (#98 BMW M4 GT3, ROWE Racing): “It would be amazing to celebrate my third win with BMW and the third ROWE Racing win in Spa. I’m really excited about the event; it’s always a highlight of the season. Our first two races in the GT World Challenge Europe were fantastic, with a first and third place finish. We are heading into the weekend as championship leaders and aim to gather as many points as possible to stay in the running for the overall win at the end of the year.”

Neil Verhagen (#998 BMW M4 GT3, ROWE Racing): “I’m super excited for the 24 Hours of Spa this year. It’s like a comeback, the second time with the BMW M4 GT3. We had a pretty good season last year and aim to build on that success. We’ll approach the race the same way as last year, with a clean race and minimal errors. We know we have the speed; we had it last year. It’s one of my favorite races of the year, and I can’t wait to get back on the track at Spa-Francorchamps.”
