  • The New Topolino has all the basics for sustainable freedom in the city: reduced carbon footprint, reduced space footprint, reduced sound footprint
  • A new vehicle for everyone to enjoy electric mobility
  • The line-up consists of two bodies: the “closed” Topolino and the “open” Topolino Dolce Vita, with one colour, one wheel design, one interior, plus exciting customisation options
  • Topolino set to go on sale in the UK from 2024

FIAT continues its mission to develop sustainable mobility for cities and turn them into relaxing playgrounds where driving becomes an easy and sustainable experience accessible to all. Such an objective becomes a reality thanks to the new FIAT Topolino, a joyful and cool new electric car for everyone.

Topolino is an ideal solution for urban and short-range mobility, able to access anywhere thanks to its electric nature. A homage to the brand’s history and its ability to innovate with likability and coolness, it perfectly embodies the New Dolce Vita style and pure Italian beauty.

With truly unique accessories – such as the little shower, which makes it the perfect beach essential -, a fresh design, and the ability to drive it from age 16 (subject to licence conditions) and up, the New FIAT Topolino also embraces a new target audience.

In addition, it perfectly embodies FIAT’s commitment to sustainability: thanks to its electric nature, it provides reduced carbon footprint and reduced sound footprint, respecting the sustainability of urban centers. It’s extremely small size does not impact traffic, on the contrary, it makes the Topolino the perfect urban mobility device.

Topolino, the FIAT way

FIAT’s mission is to continue to offer revolutionary urban mobility objects, but, in today’s scenario, with a twist, a different, fresher narrative. With the Topolino, the brand contributes greatly to urban sustainable mobility, making a significant step towards complete electrification. Fiat Topolino will make young people fall in love with “car” again, fascinating Gen Z, a young audience which greatly values sustainability topics with a strong desire for an environmentally friendly driving and transport solution.

Topolino also represents the four-wheeled dream of Riviera enthusiasts, being the perfect vehicle to experience the Italian summer on the narrow roads of the Italian beautiful coastline. An extraordinary duality: ideal for both small seaside villages and the chaotic city centre.

Italian beauty and freedom in its simplicity

The FIAT Topolino is the 500’s little sister, taking its name and design from the original 500, affectionately called ‘Topolino’ because of its small size, enlarging the family and consolidating the leadership in urban sustainable mobility. Its style, like that of its predecessor, is driven by a powerful simplicity: a design that revolves around ‘less is more’ and that heals simplicity as the best companion to its beauty.

Freedom is the key word: share it with your loved ones, drive it everywhere and in any weather conditions and then, park it wherever you want. Compared to a scooter, it represents an infinite range of possibilities. It can be driven despite unfavorable weather conditions, it is safer in its construction, and it allows you to share your journeys with friends or family.

The line-up consists of two different bodies, one “closed” and one “open”, both consistent in their structural characteristics: one color, Verde Vita, one wheel design and one aesthetic approach for the interior.

Thanks to its extremely small size compared to a normal car (2.53 meters in length), its ease of handling and a safe top speed of 28mph, Topolino reignites the desire to travel the roads stress-free. Versatile, the two models feature great electric capability thanks to a 5.5 kWh battery that offers up to 47 miles of range and a less than four-hour time for a full charge. More than what you need for your seaside days or daily rush in the city centers.

Small dimensions, with impressive space habitability, thanks to the two misaligned seats, the extensive glass surface considerably expands the perception of space. Thanks to strategic storage spaces, such as the one between the driver and passenger where one suitcase can be placed, a total of 63 liters of interior storage space is available.

Dolce Vita personalization

Delicate personalization can be added to the Fiat Topolino to emphasize its summery, Riviera character even more: it will, in fact, be possible to add a shower designed for those days spent on the beach along the Italian coast.

The “closed” version can be customized with wooden effect stickers on the doors, while in the “open” version, stickers – with stripes as a summer tent – can be added to the roof giving an extra touch of Dolce Vita. Both versions are equipped with vintage chrome effect mirrors and Rear Carriage Dolce Vita Box, which is an elegant and functional band of fabric inside which personal items can be stored. What differentiates them is the addition of both the Dolcevita Door Sills and Door Rope in the “open” version, and the Roof Sunblind in the closed version.

Moreover, optional accessories will be found on the FIAT Accessories webpage or at FIAT dealerships to satisfy all customers’ needs. Here, five different items will be available, which are perfectly in line with the Topolino style: a spacious rack bag, a USB fan, a Bluetooth speaker, a thermal water bottle for both hot and cold drinks, and two seat covers that convert into comfortable and soft beach towels when required. All of them, obviously, realized in Verde Vita.

Topolino is planned to arrive in the UK in 2024.

Toyota Research Institute Unveils New Generative AI Technique for Vehicle Design

New Technique Gives Designers Added Capabilities by Incorporating Engineering Constraints Into Generative AI Models

LOS ALTOS, Calif. (June 20, 2023) – Toyota Research Institute (TRI) today unveiled a generative artificial intelligence (AI) technique to amplify vehicle designers. Currently, designers can leverage publicly available text-to-image generative AI tools as an early step in their creative process. With TRI’s new technique, designers can add initial design sketches and engineering constraints into this process, cutting down the iterations needed to reconcile design and engineering considerations.

“Generative AI tools are often used as inspiration for designers, but cannot handle the complex engineering and safety considerations that go into actual car design,” said Avinash Balachandran, director of TRI’s Human Interactive Driving (HID) Division, whose team worked on the technology. “This technique combines Toyota’s traditional engineering strengths with the state-of-the-art capabilities of modern generative AI.”

TRI researchers released two papers describing how the technique incorporates precise engineering constraints into the design process. Constraints like drag (which affects fuel efficiency) and chassis dimensions like ride height and cabin dimensions (which affect handling, ergonomics, and safety) can now be implicitly incorporated into the generative AI process. The team tied principles from optimization theory, used extensively for computer-aided engineering, to text-to-image-based generative AI. The resulting algorithm allows the designer to optimize engineering constraints while maintaining their text-based stylistic prompts to the generative AI process.

The new generative AI technique optimizes aerodynamic drag in successive iterations based on parameter inputs from the designer.

As an example, a designer can request, via text prompt, a suite of designs based on an initial prototype sketch with specific stylistic properties like “sleek,” “SUV-like,” and “modern” while also optimizing a quantitative performance metric. In the research paper, the team focused specifically on aerodynamic drag. The approach can also optimize any other performance metrics or constraints inferred from a design image.

“TRI is harnessing the creative power of AI to amplify automobile designers and engineers,” said Charlene Wu, senior director of TRI’s Human-Centered AI (HCAI) Division, whose team collaborated with the Human Interactive Driving team on this project.

By incorporating engineering constraints directly into the design process, this tool could also help Toyota design electrified vehicles more quickly and efficiently.

“Reducing drag is critical for improving the aerodynamics of BEVs to maximize their range,” said Takero Kato, BEV factory president, Toyota Motor Corporation.

Excessive-Velocity Desert Runner Battle: 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Vs. 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison

New vehicles are higher than ever earlier than. The insane competitors amongst producers results in vehicles which might be getting more and more extra aggressive. Two of the most recent and best additions to the market embrace the Tacoma TRD Pro and the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison. Both these vehicles compete throughout the similar mid-sized desert bashing and off-roading area of interest. Therefore, it might solely make sense to place them head-to-head.

The Tacoma has lengthy been one of the best vendor within the mid-size pickup truck market, and it’s apparent that Toyota has made an enormous effort in guaranteeing that the brand new truck continues the legacy. But is the hassle sufficient? In some areas, the ZR2 Bison might need the higher hand and will give the Tacoma a run for its cash. Let’s take a look.

The new Tacoma follows the present international automobile pattern which includes downsized and turbocharged engines that scale back emissions. However, along with that, the upper trim ranges of the Tacoma with the TRD Pro included, additionally pair up a hybrid system. The hybrid system and the two.4 liter turbocharged four-cylinder collectively produce an output of 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.

On the opposite hand, the Colorado ZR2 Bison features a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with no hybrid choice obtainable. This setup is nice for 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. As you possibly can see, the Tacoma has a slight benefit each in torque and horsepower. Also, one may argue that its hybrid system is extra futureproof as its decrease emissions might allow it to remain on the highway for longer.

However, there is likely to be an issue right here. You see, one of many Tacoma’s greatest promoting factors is its reliability. The outgoing model featured a naturally aspirated V6 that was just about unkillable because of its simplicity. The new smaller turbo unit and the hybrid system may not be as dependable each when in comparison with the outdated mannequin but additionally to the Colorado ZR2 because the Chevrolet doesn’t have costly batteries in its drivetrain.

The Tacoma TRD Pro now encompasses a coil-sprung rear finish which when in comparison with leaf springs affords higher articulation, higher journey high quality, and higher response over high-speed off-roading. That being mentioned, the Bison ZR2 makes up for its lack of coils with hydraulic bump stops.

The suspension system within the Tacoma TRD Pro is made by Fox Shocks. Specifically, it’s the QS3 variant that’s used for off-road automobiles. The ZR2 Bison makes use of Multimatic spool valve dampers but additionally options hydraulic bump stops. The leaf-sprung rear finish of the Bison is likely to be a drawback; nonetheless, the hydraulic bump stops will give it the flexibility to dampen huge impacts with extra composure.

That being mentioned, the bump stops alone aren’t the explanation why the Chevrolet may have the higher hand off-road. The Bison comes commonplace with 35-inch tires wrapped round bead-lock succesful wheels. Front and rear lockers come as commonplace. The Tacoma TRD Pro solely options 33s and only a rear locker. Sure, the Toyota makes use of an aggressive traction management which can deal with the open entrance diff; nonetheless, it received’t be as efficient as a correct diff locker.

The 35-inch tires give the Chevrolet the flexibility to roll over huge obstacles extra simply. Furthermore, they add a clearance profit which is clear when taking a look on the off-road angles of each automobiles. The Tacoma Trd Pro affords a 33.8-degree method, 23.5-degree breakover, and 25.7-degree departure angle whereas the ZR2 Bison encompasses a 38.2-degree method, 26-degree departure, and 26.9-degree breakover angle. It is price mentioning that each vehicles have in depth underbody safety in case the above angles aren’t sufficient.

With these specs in thoughts, it’s protected to say that the ZR2 Bison may have the higher hand when the going will get robust despite the fact that it nonetheless encompasses a leaf-sprung rear finish.

Toyota has achieved an incredible job with the inside of the TRD Pro Tacoma. Aside from the nice design, the TRD Pro additionally encompasses a 14-inch infotainment display that takes care of most features. Thankfully, continuously used features like quantity controls are nonetheless on bodily dials. However, what really sets the interior of the Tacoma TRD Pro apart are its seats.

Aside from the nice pink leather-based and camo graphics, these seats are additionally geared up with shocks that act like a gimbal isolating the driving force from vibrations and actions whereas driving. You wouldn’t anticipate an organization to pay a lot consideration to seat design, however Toyota did, and it has actually grabbed the eye of potential patrons.

Protecting the outside of an off-roader is essential if you need your panels to remain straight. This appears to be an space Chevrolet has paid nice consideration to because the ZR2 Bison affords rock sliders, and metal entrance and rear bumpers. The entrance bumper is winch appropriate whereas the rear affords nook safety in case you run out of departure angle.

The TRD Pro does characteristic a metal rear bumper with increased corners for extra clearance; nonetheless, its entrance bumper isn’t as robust and it lacks facet safety. Worth noting is the truth that if you wish to add a winch, the Tacoma would require an aftermarket bumper whereas the ZR2 Bison will have the ability to settle for it with out making any adjustments.

So, merely put, if you’ll be tackling robust trails each weekend go for the Chevy. If you’ll principally use the truck as a day by day driver with off-road journeys that shall be on the better facet, get the Tacoma. Obviously, the Tacoma can also be nice off-road, but it surely’s not fairly on the degree of the ZR2 Bison.

DS AUTOMOBILES UNVEILS THE FUTURE OF ITS INTERIORS WITH M.I. 21

  • New interior design manifesto, M.i. 21, demonstrating the future of DS Automobiles interiors will make its public debut at the Révélations exhibition, Paris, from 7 – 11th June 2023
  • The manifesto seeks to rethink the requirements of interiors to allow more space, light and to make them more immersive and comfortable
  • M.i. 21 demonstrates a future without screens in favour of projections onto opaque material to enhance the feel and design of the interior of future DS models
  • DS Automobiles has also revealed a new website for the DS Design Studio to allow further exploration of the M.i. 21 manifesto

DS DESIGN STUDIO is unveiling M.i. 21 to showcase the interiors of future DS Automobile cars. M.i. 21 will be on show to the public for the first time at the Révélations exhibition, Paris, from 7 – 11 June 2023.

M.i. 21 is a research medium and represents the joint thinking of the design and product teams around new concepts, original shapes and technological developments. These developments will be implemented in future DS cars by the end of the decade and will feature redesigned ergonomics, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) with additional developments in colours, materials and finishes (CMF).

Unlike a concept vehicle, a design manifesto incorporates regulatory, industrial and economic demands to ensure faster production. This means that M.i. 21 can act as an important communication tool between engineering and management groups at DS Automobiles, and as a creative stimulus for the DS Design team based at the DS DESIGN STUDIO, Paris.

“Révélations is an event dedicated to expertise, craft and the excellence of craftspeople. We have been involved there since 2019. It is an opportunity to meet an audience sensitive to the avant-garde, beautiful materials, style, expertise and design. It is interesting to garner its impressions, feelings and comments, like a real-life test with experts. Our participation in Révélations also gives us the opportunity to communicate our DS x MÉTIERS D’ART design competition, which allows us to project ourselves even further.”
Thierry Metroz, DS Automobiles Design Director

M.i. 21 – The Future of DS interiors

Designed by Thomas Bouveret – Head of Interior Design, Vincent Lobry – Head of CMF Design, and their teams, the M.i. 21 manifesto reinterprets the language for tomorrow’s interiors supporting the art of travel. This includes:

Light is a key contributor to the in-car sensory experience and contributes to well-being in the cockpit. Utilising both direct and indirect sources to give lightness to the features and bring a new dimension to the materials, it will be adaptive, intelligent, and connected to its environment. The light circles in the doors enhance the materials within the door panels.

To free up more room within the cabin, the architecture of the interior has allowed more space to be freed up by making the dashboard float and by pushing it forwards. The floor is freed up and redesigned, without a central tunnel or centre console, and the glass surfaces are increased to offer more space, freedom and tranquility inside. Storage is inspired by the world of furniture while a subtle play of balance between materials, the sensation of touch and the distribution of volumes takes place to provide a feeling of well-being.

As part of M.i. 21, the DS Design team chose to put an end to the constant one-upmanship of sound system components to gain space. The work illustrated in the manifesto is both more visually rewarding and more in harmony with a fluid and refined style. All sound technology has been brought together on a central feature, an iconic object by design, its positioning in the cabin and the lighting that accompanies it.  The acoustic quality of DS interiors allows sound to become part of the journey: it can amplify the experience or disappear to bring a sense of opulence.

M.i. 21 demonstrates how the human-machine relationship can be redesigned. Exploring how to make interiors less intrusive and more ‘magical’ began on the  DS AERO SPORT LOUNGE in 2020, where the information was projected onto satin cotton rather than shown on intrusive screens. The disappearance of screens was intended to reduce mental overload and limit information to only that which is required. The race for the size or number of screens is a strong trend among all manufacturers. But, turned off, these screens have no real aesthetic value. The idea is to find technology that gives the expected information without sacrificing quality and sensory appeal. With the M.i. 21 manifesto, an innovative solution is being tested by projecting relevant information onto a strip that can be made opaque to display information or become transparent to uncover materials. The only concession to screens are those located in the doors and devoted to rear-facing cameras. The whole system is controlled by voice or by a remote control system located in the central armrest.

  • the artistic dimension

One objective pursued by the M.i. 21 manifesto is to go further in the bespoke offering for customers. Enhanced by a customisable work of art, adaptable to each customer’s taste. The absence of a speaker frees up space in the doors. This space is reinvested to create more storage space and to emphasise and differentiate the cockpit, with a signature and strong graphic design.

Questions to Thierry METROZ, DS Automobiles Design Director

  • What is a manifesto, what are the differences to a concept car?

“A manifesto is a working tool, a real accelerator of change that we use to reflect on the future. Physically, it is a model that normally has to stay secret, because it incorporates a lot of our future.

These models are a link between our vision and our projects in development. They help guide our work and share this research for the brand with the group’s engineering and management. We can also carry out tests to measure the level of attractiveness.

As it is an internal research tool, our teams use it to unleash their creativity while integrating the fact that most of the elements must be able to be put into production. And this is where the big difference lies with a concept car that remains barely, if at all, capable of being manufactured.

Last point, the time factor is important, with a 100% digital design it takes less than 6 months between the first sketch and the finalised model.

The manifestos crystallise our thoughts on a future product right now and gives the roadmap.”

  • What is the message from this manifesto and does it represent the interior of a future model?

“The M.i. 21 manifesto that we are showing at Révélations is important to the history of our brand. It underlines an approach of openness on our part. We are sharing our creative process and vision with a wide audience of connoisseurs, as much in the automotive world as in the world of craft.

We are experiencing a historic transformation of automotive interiors. New architectures related to electric platforms, autonomous driving modes, the arrival of artificial intelligence and, most importantly, the desire of our customers to live a different experience are central to our thinking. The M.i. 21 manifesto illustrates these profound changes, an opportunity for us to share a unique vision of the French art of travel.”

DS DESIGN STUDIO.PARIS, behind the scenes of design

In parallel with its introduction at the Révélations exhibition, the M.i. 21 manifesto is also being unveiled on the new DS DESIGNSTUDIO.PARIS website, www.dsdesignstudio.paris

The DS DESIGN STUDIO.PARIS website is complementary to the DS Automobiles website and allows the public to further explore the design of the brand’s creations, its expertise and its collaborations, including M.i. 21. Through exclusive interviews, they will discover the vision and passion of the women and men who shape the design for the brand’s future projects.

“We want to take more of the general public behind the scenes, like a chef would invite his clientele into the kitchen. Our first motivation is to share our passion with visitors to the site, who only see a part of our designs in our showrooms and occasionally at shows. We want to explain to as many people as possible the genesis of the design of our concept cars and production models. In the LAB section of the DS DESIGN STUDIO.PARIS website, visitors will discover some designs they won’t be expecting to see from a car design centre.”

Thierry METROZ, DS Automobiles Design Director.

The Révélations exhibition is an international biennial for craft and design held in Paris, at the Grand Palais Ephémère.

Much like the earlier ‘C-Series Edition’ that enhanced the value-for-money offering across Citroën’s passenger car range, the new ë-Series editions add fresh styling cues and more technology across ë-C4, ë-C4 X and electrified C5 Aircross models.

All three models share key design elements, such as a Perla Nera Black bi-tone roof and black alloy wheels, as well as exclusive ë-Series exterior badging.

Ë-SERIES: NEW SIGNATURE FOR THE ELECTRIFIED C-SEGMENT RANGE

  • Sitting at the top of the range for both ë-C4 and ë-C4 X, ë-Series versions of both vehicles come with the new My Citroën Drive Plus infotainment system and keyless start, as well as heated front seats and an upgraded Citroën HiFi system. Ë-Series variants will be available with the existing 100kw (136hp) – 50kWh powertrain with a WLTP range of up to 222 miles, as well as the new 115kw (156hp) – 54kWh version with a WLTP range of up to 260 miles.

  • Based on the existing ‘Shine’ trim level, C5 Aircross ë-Series editions will gain Highway Driver Assist, an opening panoramic glass sunroof, and heated front seats. Ë-Series models will be available with the 225 Plug-in Hybrid powertrain, as well as the new Hybrid 136, which combines a specially developed 136hp PureTech petrol engine with 48V battery technology, alongside a new electrified dual-clutch ë-DCS6 gearbox and a 21kW electric motor – reducing CO2 emissions by up to 15%/

Across all three models, the use of electrified powertrains helps add to the sense of on-board serenity and well-being, with a smooth ride and reduced noise.

A DYNAMIC AND CONTRASTING VISUAL IDENTITY

All three model silhouettes share the same exterior identity based on shared elements, creating a look that is prestigious, elegant, and dynamic.

The first of these elements is the Perla Nera Black roof that is standard on ë-Series trim editions. Already a familiar option on C4 and C5 Aircross, this bi-tone roof design is a new feature on the ë-C4 X range. The entire roof is painted black – which is particularly in keeping with the dark-tinted rear window – giving a fluid feel, and an appearance that makes the car look more dynamic. With this two-tone combination, ë-C4 X takes on the air of a coupé, but without losing the practicality of its spacious rear seat and large boot.

In addition, each silhouette benefits from full-black alloy wheels, with 18-inch ‘Aeroblade’ black alloy wheels on ë-C4 and ë-C4 X that are new and specific to these ë-Series models, while C5 Aircross Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid ë-Series variants gain 19-inch ‘Art’ black alloy wheels. For added contrast, each vehicle is presented with tinted rear side windows, rear quarter windows and rear window.

The combination of the optional Pearl White body colour with the black roof is the signature look of this new ë-Series collection, although customers can also choose other colours available in the range.

Ë-Series versions also come with Citroën’s Dark Chrome colour pack, which is applied to the front bumper inserts and the Airbump® panels, giving each model a distinctive touch. This pack is exclusive to the ë-Series on ë-C4 and ë-C4 X (although already an option on C5 Aircross). Finally, all ë-Series variants come with an “ë-Series” monogram, a clever mix of glossy black, aluminium and white, positioned at the rear of the three vehicles.

A NEW LIGHT INTERIOR AMBIANCE FOR GREATER SERENITY

Comfort and well-being is a true differentiator for Citroën. Ë-Series versions of C5 Aircross take this commitment to heart by offering an exclusive light interior ambience. The choice of light and warm materials is intended to create a brighter interior harmony, offering a soothing atmosphere, while enhancing the sense of space inside the cabin. Ë-Series editions banish negative thoughts to help you relax in a cocoon of comfort.

This light colour is applied with a tone-on-tone contrast for an even more striking interior ambience. The light grey seats, backrests, and armrests are set off by the medium grey applied to the edge of the seat, contours, upper backrest and headrests, as well as the central and door armrests. The horizontal seat upholstery design, which extends into the door panels, helps to reinforce the perception of width on-board and gives great coherence to the passenger compartment.

An interior with a focus on detail adds value to the occupants. This is the case, for example, in the design of the seats, which feature the ‘bubble panels’ characteristic of Citroën style, providing the graphic signature of the seats and visually reinforcing the notion of comfort. The same goes for the band on the upper part of the seat, which features a herringbone pattern. To finish the look, ‘ë’ labels are added on the inside of the front seats, which act as the ë-Series signature.

For customers who want a more dynamic and darker interior, the C5 Aircross ë-Series trim is available with Alcantara® seats in the existing dark ambience.

All ë-C4 and ë-C4 X ë-Series versions feature the popular mid-grey Alcantara® ambience that has been well received on the ‘Shine Plus’ versions of these models.

A NEW WARM AND RESPONSIBLE ALCANTARA® UPHOLSTERY

Ë-Series versions choose quality materials such as Alcantara® for the seat, backrest and armrests. This fabric adds to the perceived quality and warmth of the interior. Soft to the touch, it also provides better support for occupants.

Specifically, on C5 Aircross ë-Series versions with the light grey interior ambience, the Alcantara® fabric is manufactured using an innovative process with 68% of its outer surface made of recycled fibres.

CITROËN INTRODUCES C5 AIRCROSS HYBRID 136: A NEW AND ACCESSIBLE ELECTRIFIED OFFERING WITH NO RE-CHARGING REQUIRED

  • New Hybrid 136 powertrain adds 48V hybrid technology to C5 Aircross line-up.
  • C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 features a specially designed PureTech petrol engine, a new electrified dual-clutch ë-DCS6 gearbox, and a 21kW electric motor.
  • Powertrain offers electric-only driving for use in urban areas, helping to reduce local emissions.
  • Addition of 48V hybrid technology improves fuel economy by up to 30% in urban use.
  • UK order books for C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 open in June, with first deliveries expected in July.

Citroën has revealed a new electrified powertrain option for C5 Aircross – the efficient Hybrid 136. Based on the latest compact and lightweight hybrid technology, this new powertrain features a 48V battery pack that re-charges in use, a 136hp PureTech petrol engine that has been specially designed to accommodate the new hybrid system, coupled to a new electrified dual-clutch ë-DCS6 gearbox and a 21kW electric motor.

Emitting only 129g of CO2/km according to the combined WLTP cycle, C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 emits 15% less CO2 than the equivalent non-electrified petrol C5 Aircross derivative.

Priced similarly to an equivalent C5 Aircross diesel model, C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 emits almost 12% less CO2 than the diesel-powered version.

C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 enhances the C5 Aircross electrified range, which also includes the Plug-in Hybrid 225.

Most importantly, the introduction of C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 accelerates Citroën’s electrification strategy. The Citroën electrified range is now made up of 10 models: from Hybrid 136 to 100% electric, alongside Plug-in Hybrid, from Ami to New C5 X, and from passenger cars to commercial vehicles, each new introduction with the aim of offering a powertrain that meets customer needs.

THE NEW 48V HYBRID TECHNOLOGY IN DETAIL

The new 48V hybrid technology allows for either mixed or 100% electric driving. The lightweight and compact hybrid technology is based upon:

  • A new-generation 1.2 PureTech petrol engine, specially developed for hybridisation (40% of the parts are new), with three cylinders and 1199cc, delivering 136hp (100kW) at 5500 rpm and torque of 230Nm at 1750 rpm.
  • The choice of a variable geometry turbocharger and timing chain contributes to the new powertrain’s performance and robustness. Complying with the Euro 6.4 standard, and operating in accordance with the Miller cycle, the engine also features improved thermal efficiency.
  • The permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor can develop peak power of 21kW (28hp), and torque of 55Nm. It allows C5 Aircross to be driven on 100% electric power for low torque requirements, at low speeds, when manoeuvring or slowing down, and assists the petrol engine when starting. During deceleration, it acts as a generator to charge the battery, which reduces wear and tear of the brakes at the same time.
  • A belt starter, powered by the 48V on-board system, allows the petrol engine to start quickly and responsively.
  • A new electrified dual-clutch gearbox – ë-DCS6 – comes with a six-speed dual-clutch system with no torque break and is also specifically designed for hybrid systems. The gear changes are noticeably smoother, and the drive is more comfortable. The electric motor, the inverter and the ECU are all integrated, optimising space under the bonnet.
  • A 48V Lithium-Ion battery pack, with an available capacity of 432Wh, is installed under the left front seat, so there is no impact on boot size or interior space.
  • In addition, thanks to a voltage converter, part of the electricity produced by the 48V electric system is transformed into 12V power to supply the car’s on-board equipment. This way, two separate electrical networks can exist side-by-side.

C5 AIRCROSS HYBRID 136 Ë-DCS6: EASY ACCESS TO ELECTRIC MOBILITY

With this new hybrid powertrain, Citroën is offering a new electrified alternative that provides the comfort of purely electric driving, saves fuel, and reduces CO2 emissions.

C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 can be driven in electric mode for a limited distance in the city, or on short drives, or when manoeuvring. The 48V hybrid technology optimises the performance and fuel consumption of C5 Aircross, with average fuel savings of 15% compared with the PureTech 130 EAT8 automatic petrol versions. Efficiency is even greater when in urban areas, with average fuel savings of almost 30%.

The 48V hybrid powertrain also has a positive impact on CO2 emissions, with a reduction of up to 15% (20g) compared with the PureTech 130 S&S EAT8 petrol version. C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 achieves 129g of CO2/km according to the combined WLTP cycle.

The electric motor also delivers an additional 9kW (approximately 12hp), helping acceleration. As the battery re-charges automatically when the car decelerates, the new powertrain makes daily use more comfortable and will appeal to customers who want to experience driving in electric mode without the need to re-charge.

STILL THE BENCHMARK FOR ON-BOARD COMFORT

C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 ë-DCS6 keeps all the on-board comfort and features of C5 Aircross (Citroën Advanced Comfort® suspension and seats, space and modularity), along with all the customisation options customers expect, and the same high levels of equipment.

For further ease of use, the digital instrument panel has been upgraded with a specific display. Drivers have all the information they need about hybrid driving directly in front of their eyes. without the need to look away:

–               Tachometer in blue to show 100% electric driving mode.

–               The energy flow of the hybrid powertrain.

–               Battery charge level.

–               Driving mode via a power meter (Charge, Eco, Power).

–               Percentage of distance travelled in electric mode, at any time, and on average.
