College With Auto Restoration Program Receives $1B Donation From Anonymous Source

McPherson College in Kansas has received a remarkable $1 billion donation from an anonymous donor. The college made the announcement on July 21, sharing the extraordinary news. The donor initially promised to double-match every $1 donation made by others until June 30, setting a cap of $500 million. However, the college raised a staggering $342 million, surpassing expectations and prompting the donor to increase the cap and contribute a total of $1 billion. With the existing endowment and other commitments, McPherson College will have an endowment of almost $1.6 billion, making it the largest of its kind for any small college in the US.

This news is particularly significant in the automotive world because of McPherson’s extensive automotive restoration program. According to the college’s website, it is the only four-year bachelor’s degree program of its kind in the country. The program offers various focuses, including historic auto tech, restoration management, communications, restoration design, and auto restoration tech.

The program goes beyond just rebuilding old Buicks. The school has also received a generous donation of a classic Ferrari from another donor. Currently, students are preparing a 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet that they restored for the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where they aim to win rather than simply showcase the vehicle.

The $1 billion endowment will be used to expand academic programs and assist with college affordability. It is named the Ward-Burkholder Endowment after two of the school’s alumni who later became professors at McPherson.

McPherson College President Michael Schneider expressed his gratitude for the anonymous donor’s historic contribution. He stated, “Today is historic, not just for McPherson College, but for all small liberal arts colleges in America. I am incredibly grateful to our anonymous donor for giving us an unprecedented opportunity – and responsibility – to build and implement our strategic vision of becoming a destination learning community. We have also been given an amazing opportunity to honor two legendary alumni and professors, Dr. Ward and Dr. Burkholder.”

Founded in 1877, McPherson College offers more than 40 areas of study and has approximately 800 students.

FIRST GLIMPSE OF STUNNING NEW VAUXHALL EXPERIMENTAL

  • Forward looking: Vauxhall Experimental gives an insight into the future of the brand
  • Attention to detail: Flush body surfacing, aero-efficiency and resource-conserving

After revealing the name of its upcoming concept car as the Vauxhall Experimental just last week, the British brand has now offered a tantalizing preview of the design study by releasing first images of the vehicle. The photographs reveal the extreme precision and high attention to detail of the Vauxhall Experimental, which will show the future of the Vauxhall brand with its more technical and extreme interpretation of the Bold and Pure design philosophy.

“The Vauxhall Experimental marks the start of a new chapter for our brand. It was designed to provide a tangible vision of where the Vauxhall brand is heading. We will be revealing more details soon – so stay tuned,” said Mark Adams, Vice-President, Design, Vauxhall.

One of the most eye-catching features teased by the images is the further development of the Compass, the guiding element of Vauxhall’s design philosophy. The illuminated Vauxhall Griffin sits confidently at the center of the compass in a new iteration of the Vauxhall Vizor, the brand’s characteristic front fascia and technology hub. It is flanked by the elongated wing signature lighting on the horizontal axis while the illuminated center crease adds further drama. A distinctive red-light graphic on flush body surfacing, devoid of unnecessary shut lines, suggests the repetition of the compass at the rear of the Vauxhall Experimental.

Elsewhere, aerodynamic efficiency has long been a hallmark of Vauxhall passenger cars and the vane-like construction of the eye-catching wheels indicate that the Vauxhall Experimental will also share this attribute. The futuristic cues are continued on the interior with the profiled seat structure hinting at a sustainable, resource-conserving approach to the ergonomic seats that are typical for Vauxhall vehicles.

The Vauxhall Experimental will celebrate its world premiere at this year’s IAA Mobility in Munich (5 to 10 September 2023).

Electric Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio Models Will Have Up To 1,000 HP

Alfa Romeo is committed to its electric future, although the renowned Italian brand has yet to release a model that doesn’t rely on a combustion engine. The first electric vehicle will be a subcompact crossover positioned below the Tonale, set to launch in the first half of 2024. Fans of the brand will be pleased to know that the “Quadrifoglio” name will continue in the era of zero-emission vehicles, replacing the current V6-powered performance models like the Giulia and Stelvio.

While specific details about the size and design of the first Quadrifoglio electric vehicle remain unclear, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has revealed some exciting information in an interview with Australian magazine CarSales. The forthcoming electric models bearing the iconic four-leaf clover emblem will offer a power output ranging from 900 to 1,000 horsepower (671 to 745 kilowatts), approximately double the power of the twin-turbo 2.9-liter engine found in the top-of-the-line Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV.

Why Electric Pickup Trucks Are So Important

In the world of automotive innovation, electric pickup trucks have emerged as a crucial element of the industry’s eco-friendly mission. These electrified workhorses symbolize progress, efficiency, and environmental responsibility, offering size and capability that goes beyond the typical sedans and SUVs in the “eco-friendly” category. This makes them particularly valuable for people driving between construction yards, businesses, and large-scale production locations. Electric pickup trucks are also quieter, providing a more pleasant driving experience.

The significance of electric pickup trucks is becoming increasingly apparent as they empower businesses to thrive in urban areas and make strides toward a sustainable future. With each passing day, these vehicles are revolutionizing transportation and reshaping how we perceive pickup trucks.

Driving an electric pickup truck offers numerous benefits. It allows people to experience the capability of these vehicles while contributing to the fight against climate change. Electric pickup trucks are also suitable for making deliveries in zero-emission zones established by various cities around the world. In addition, these trucks are cost-effective in terms of fuel expenses, especially with rising gas prices. Moreover, they are quieter compared to their gas-powered counterparts, allowing for unrestricted driving during early and late hours in communities, cities, and businesses.

Electric Pickup Trucks Currently Have 300-500 Miles Of Range

Many electric pickup truck models currently offer a range of over 300-500 miles on a full charge. For example, the Silverado EV has a rated range of 450 miles, while Ford’s long-range versions of the Lightning can go up to 320 miles per charge. These vehicles are designed to match or exceed the capabilities of existing electric vehicles (EVs) because they are relied upon for heavy work and transportation.

Automakers are continuously improving battery technology and investing more in electric vehicle lines, with the aim of achieving ranges of 500+ miles per charge. This development is particularly important as not every city or town has ample EV charging infrastructure. The availability of charging stations and extended range will increase the public’s interest in electric trucks.

You Can Still Tow With An Electric Pickup Truck

One concern people have about electric pickup trucks is their towing capability. While towing large items or vehicles may drain the battery faster, electric pickup trucks can still handle towing tasks. The power consumption during towing is similar to using more gas when towing with a conventional truck. For example, Rivian’s R1T can tow up to 11,000 pounds, and Ford’s F-150 Lightning can tow 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. However, towing long distances with an electric pickup truck requires planning for more frequent charging stops, typically every 100-200 miles depending on the vehicle’s range.

Electric Pickup Trucks May Become Cheaper

The pricing of electric pickup trucks is expected to decrease as they become more widely available. While some automakers have promised electric pickup trucks priced near $40,000, not many have been able to deliver on that promise. For instance, Ford initially aimed for a $40,000 MSRP on the F-150 Lightning, but the actual price is just below $60,000. Making electric trucks more affordable will encourage prospective buyers to consider greener alternatives for their work and personal use. The development of cost-effective electric pickups by major automakers is eagerly anticipated.

A Potential Smartwatch from Nothing

Nothing, a company that has recently filed trademarks for its future smartwatch lineup, may be a couple of years away from launching its smartwatch. The fact that they have taken steps to protect their intellectual property suggests that they have a genuine interest in entering the smartwatch market.

Interestingly, this news adds context to a tweet from Nothing’s founder, Carl Pei, in which he questioned the usefulness of smartwatches and asked his followers about their experiences with them. This could have been a subtle hint at Nothing’s plans to develop their own smartwatch.

If Nothing follows through with its plans, it will be interesting to see if their smartwatch features the same unconventional design language as their other products. At this point, it is unclear whether the smartwatch will be a full-fledged Wear OS-powered device or a more budget-friendly fitness tracker. However, based on Nothing’s history, it is more likely that they will release a comprehensive smartwatch.

Peugeot Invests In French Electric Motorcycle Firm DAB Motors

There’s no denying that electric motorcycles are the future of two-wheeled mobility. With rapid growth in Europe and Asia, electric two-wheelers are foreseen to become more popular in the coming years. Indeed, nearly all manufacturers big and small are developing new EV platforms, the latest of which is French motorcycle brand Peugeot Motocycles.

We’ve talked about Peugeot Motocycles quite a bit in recent years. The historic French marque seems to be undergoing a resurgence, rolling out new models left and right, in multiple markets. Indeed, thanks to funding from German company Mutares, the French brand has been given a second lease on life. That being said, with electric motorbikes apparently the next big thing, it’s no surprise that Peugeot wants in on the action, too.

Peugeot Introduces Limited Django 125 And 150 Bordeaux Edition In Japan

In an article by Le Repaire Des Motards, Sébastien Mas, President of Peugeot Motorcycles explained, “The main driver of our collaboration lies in the DAB brand promise: to deliver thrills on two wheels to the bold. This powerful commitment has led us to recognize the need to venture into the electrical field, relying on our strong heritage of 125 years of know-how. In addition, the essence of both brands is rooted in production in France. We are very proud to manufacture our premium ranges locally, to preserve our expertise and to contribute to the growth of French industry.”

Instead of developing a new EV platform from the ground up, Peugeot has decided to invest in another company to carry out its EV-focused endeavors. Said company is fellow French firm DAB motors. Founded in 2019, the Biarritz-based company started out building custom motorcycles. In 2021, it entered the EV space with its Concept-E, an electric motorbike with minimalist, sporty design akin to that of a supermoto. It was designed as a 125cc-equivalent in terms of performance.

Dab Motors Unveils Concept-E Electric Naked Bike

On paper, a machine like the DAB Concept-E is a perfect fit for what Peugeot wants to achieve in the future. Peugeot, being the established company that it is, undoubtedly has the expertise when it comes to sales, distribution, and mass-production. Meanwhile, DAB has the technological know-how to make impressive, premium electric motorcycles. That being said, you can probably see where this is going – the partnership could very well result in the commercialization of the Concept-E, or some other equivalent electric two-wheeler.

On the DAB Motors side fo the equation, company founder and CEO Simon Dabadie stated in the same report, “I am delighted to be associated with a historic manufacturer such as Peugeot Motocycles. This strategic collaboration will allow DAB Motors to take a new step. With the support of Peugeot Motocycles, DAB Motors will soon mass-produce its electric motorcycles and deliver them worldwide.”

Now, whether DAB will retain its branding, or be absorbed into Peugeot as a whole, remains to be seen. What we do know, is that DAB is set to put up its production line in Peugeot’s large factory in Mandeure, France. The end-goal is to have an electric motorcycle that’s affordable, practical, and 100-percent made in France. Peugeot now holds a majority share in DAB Motors, so expect to hear quite a lot more about this partnership in the future.
