A Closer Look At The New Honda E-Clutch

During the launch of new bikes at EICMA 2023, Honda introduced their new technology: E-Clutch. The E-Clutch is paired with existing hardware and brings a totally new feature to two of Honda’s middleweight motorcycles for 2024.

The 2024 Honda CB650R and the CBR650R have both received updates and were unveiled during EICMA 2023. The CB650R now features a new look and a new five-inch TFT display, all built on the same platform. Similarly, the CBR650R has a new look, a new five-inch TFT display, and operates on the same platform.

While the fundamental elements of these bikes remain the same with Showa suspension, a steel frame, and the 94-horsepower four-cylinder engine, the standout feature of these bikes is the E-Clutch, a particularly ingenious technology.

2024 Honda CB650R and CBR650R Engine

To accommodate the new clutch system, Honda’s engineers have made some adjustments, including fitting a new ECU capable of handling the E-Clutch technology. Essentially, the E-Clutch comprises a pair of servo motors attached to an E-Clutch-specific engine cover. These motors aid the user and allow the bike to have more advanced up and downshifting capabilities and added convenience. The electronic motors also engage the clutch once the bike comes to a stop, preventing the engine from stalling. When it’s time to go, the rider simply needs to apply some throttle and continue on their way.

Other brands have incorporated impressive clutch technologies on their bikes, like MV Agusta with their Rekluse-based Smart Clutch System (SCS). However, Honda’s implementation works with the standard slipper system on the bikes since it operates independently of a traditional wet multi-plate unit.

2024 Honda CB650R and CBR650R4

The system is managed through an actuator unit that communicates with Honda’s ECU to determine whether the clutch needs to be engaged or disengaged based on the bike’s speed and engine speed.

Importantly, this system is still based on a traditional clutch lever with a cable. This means that if the system fails or the rider wants full manual control, the E-Clutch can be disabled by navigating through the menus in the five-inch TFT display. In the worst case scenario, if the system were to fail completely or malfunction, the clutch can still be operated normally using the lever.

It’s worth noting that the system prioritizes the manual operation of the clutch, with the system being there to pull the clutch for the rider and prevent the engine from stalling. When active, the system allows for smooth up and downshifts, which, according to Honda, are smoother than a standard up and down blipper.

Riders can adjust the system to suit their preferences, as Honda offers three levels of engagement: Soft, Medium, and Hard. Additionally, riders will be informed about the E-Clutch’s activity through a notification on the dashboard.

Junya Ono, the project leader for the Honda E-Clutch, provided some insight into the technology. He mentioned:

“Our new Honda E-Clutch is designed to give riders a new kind of experience that makes riding even more fun and exciting. Furthermore, it offers the peace of mind of error-proof operation and all the comfort necessary to move around the city without stress. We are convinced that many motorcyclists will want to try this new system to discover how sportiness and comfort can coexist while offering fun and flexibility of use at the same time.”

The Arrival of Italjet Dragster 125 and 200 to the US in 2024

Italjet, a well-known boutique scooter manufacturer, left a lasting impression at EICMA 2023. In addition to introducing several new models, the brand announced its ambitious plans for global expansion.

One of the main attractions at Italjet’s EICMA 2023 presentation was the introduction of the Dragster 559 Twin, a radical scooter inspired by superbikes. This model features a parallel-twin engine, manual transmission, and dual Brembo brakes. Another highly anticipated model, the Dragster 300, was also unveiled. It is the top-performing single-cylinder model in Italjet’s current lineup and shares premium components and similar styling with its smaller counterparts, the Dragster 125 and 200.

Italjet has revealed that the Dragster 125 and 200, the most popular bikes in its lineup, will be available in the US market in 2024. These models have enjoyed considerable commercial success, with approximately 15,000 units sold across Europe and Southeast Asia. Although this may seem modest compared to other brands, Italjet has always maintained low production quantities.

Italjet has secured a distribution agreement with Chicago’s Genuine Scooters for the two new models. The Dragster 125 and 200 are expected to arrive in the US by the Spring of 2024.

For those unfamiliar with the specifications of these models, the Dragster 125 is equipped with a 125cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine producing a maximum power output of 12.5 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and 10.5Nm (7.35 pound-feet) of torque at 7,750 rpm. The larger Dragster 200 features a 181cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected single, delivering 17.5 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 15.5 Nm (10.85 pound-feet) of torque at 7,750 rpm.

Both models share the same underpinnings, including an S.I.S single-arm front end paired with a hydropneumatic shock absorber. They also feature rear suspension with an adjustable monoshock and a single-sided swingarm. Brembo supplies the brakes, with 240mm and 175mm rotors at the front and rear respectively. ABS is standard on both models.

Horwin Unveils “Project Horizon” For Sustainable Mobility In Europe

If we look at EICMA 2023, it’s clear that electric two-wheelers are becoming a significant part of the industry. Many manufacturers, both new and established, are presenting their electric mobility solutions at the expo. It’s exciting to see the variety of innovative concepts that have the potential to shape the future of two-wheeled transportation.

Horwin, a brand we’ve discussed before, took the opportunity to showcase its latest innovations at EICMA. The Austrian-designed Chinese-made company unveiled “Project Horizon,” an initiative that focuses on providing a seamless user experience. The project was a collaboration with custom bike builder Arjan van der Boom, and focuses on the brand’s Senmenti 0 electric scooter.

This Is The APD Concept From Vmoto And Pininfarina

If you paid attention to EICMA 2022, you might remember the aerodynamic electric concept that electric mobility specialist VMoto and world-renowned design firm Pininfarina debuted at the event. In 2023, both firms are pleased to show off how their partnership has progressed.

This is the APD Concept, which Vmoto describes as “the preview of a new scooter model that Vmoto will introduce into the range in the near future.” Previously, Vmoto has focused on smaller scooters, not maxi scooters.

The APD Concept is clearly an electric maxi scooter—a genre that hasn’t been common among most electric manufacturers so far. The most well-known electric maxi scooter introduced to date is the BMW CE-04. To be completely fair, the APD Concept kind of looks like it could be a cousin of that design.

Still, maxi-scooters offer an eminently practical combination of power and on-board storage space that’s appealing to a certain kind of rider. It was only a matter of time (and probably also energy density and battery pack advancement) before electric OEMs started expanding in this direction.

Vmoto also refers to the APD concept as “The Power of the Air,” stressing the importance of aerodynamic developments in this concept. While good aero has been a pursuit among vehicle makers for about as long as motorized transportation has existed, it’s especially important for extending range on EVs. Less wind resistance = squeezing every last kilometer out of a full charge.

“We are extremely excited to be able to present the new Concept APD at EICMA 2023, the most important motorcycle fair in the world,” Vmoto International president of strategy and business development and chief managing officer Graziano Milone said in a statement.

“The partnership with a historic company like Pininfarina is a source of pride for our entire company and I believe that the final result is absolutely extraordinary: a scooter that is not only beautiful, but innovative and high-performance, which combines Vmoto’s electric technology with the Italian style of the designers by Pininfarina,” he concluded.

It’s not yet clear how near the “near future” that Vmoto mentions might be for whatever production electric maxi-scooter the APD Concept eventually becomes. In any case, we’ll look forward to seeing the finished item once it does.
