PROJECT WHITE KNIGHT: A MODERN KTM 380 TWO-STROKE

Jonny Weisman from The Ride Shop has done it again! Just when we thought we had seen it all, Weisman shows up with a machine that blows our minds. His latest creation for long-time customer Scott Whittington, who has racing in his blood (his dad competed in and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979), is a late-’90s/early-’00s KTM 380cc engine put into a highly customized 2023 GasGas 450 chassis. Since the last bike Weisman built us was blacked out and called the “Dark Knight,” we decided to call this one the “White Knight.”

The White Knight has a ’90s KTM 380 motor in a modern chassis.

BUILT FROM SCRATCH

Unlike most builds, this one was done in pieces, mainly because it was not a complete bike to begin with. The main frame, subframe, swingarm and suspension components were all acquired separately. This made the tear-down process easy, but added some stress about proper fitment. With the chassis basically torn down, it was time for specialty coatings. The main frame and swingarm headed off to Condello Customs for a white powdercoat finish, while other miscellaneous bolt-on items would follow once the build started to take shape. The fork and shock also got some specialty coating, but in a bright-red color that popped against the otherwise white bike.

Weisman would work some magic internally on the suspension, installing a Ride Shop KYB conversion in the WP fork with custom valving and a spring setup for Whittington. The shock was valved and sprung to match the front, and a Xtrig preload adjuster was also installed to make quick sag adjustments. Xtrig’s splitdesign triple clamps with PHDS bar mounts are designed to reduce rider impact and now hold the highly modified front fork.

Moto-Master handled all the stopping needs with rotors and a complete factory-level billet brake system.

When Weisman explained the detail of the engine, our brain almost exploded! Combining a late-’90s/early-’00s KTM-anything generally ends in someone being committed to the loony bin. In that era, not many people knew what was actually on the bikes unless you worked at KTM, and even then it wasn’t even that clear.

To make a long story short, Weisman essentially told us this: “The cases on that motor are from a 2001 KTM 380. The cylinder, crank and transmission are all from a 1998, which was a cable clutch. I wanted to go hydraulic, plus the cases were broken internally. I bought the cases not realizing how many differences there were compared to the 1998. The transmission input shaft is a different length, as well as a kickstarter stop for the kick mechanism. The stock cylinder normally has a big resonance chamber on the front. I welded the cylinder up and used a front powervalve cover from a 1996 KTM 250SX.”

With all that completed, he added some white coatings and a Specbolt hardware kit; slapped it all together; bolted it in the frame; strapped in a Keihin carb, custom pipe and carbon fiber Rocket Exhaust silencer; and called it good. Well, there was a lot more details along the way with just about every part, but if we had to put Weisman through the trauma of telling us every detail, we might have had to drive him to the loony bin ourselves.

The list of aftermarket parts used on this build is impressive and high-end. Moto-Master handled all the stopping needs with rotors and a complete factory-level billet brake system. They also made it with a red rear sprocket, matching the build theme and gold racing chain. Dubya USA built the custom wheelset that featured red Haan hubs, stainless steel spokes with redanodized spoke nipples and silver D.I.D Dirt Star rims, all wrapped up in Dunlop MX33 tires. Other companies included on the build are TM Designworks, Rocket Exhaust, Works Connection, IMS Products, Seat Concepts and P3 Carbon, with Rad Custom Designs topping the build off with a custom graphics kit featuring metallic flakes.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

We are extremely lucky that Weisman has very generous customers that not only bankroll these insane builds, but also let us ride them when they are completed, because the White Knight does not disappoint! Surprisingly, it’s very easy to start; you have to put all your weight into kicking it, but most of the time it fired right up. The multi-year combination of the engine parts and the number of modifications afterwards had us worried, but it flat out hauled the mail! The power is a cross between a big 500cc Honda or Kawasaki two-stroke from the late ’90s and a modern-day Yamaha YZ250. When the track is deep and loamy, it likes to be on the revs, but when it’s hard-packed, keeping it in the meat of the powerband by short-shifting, like on a 500, is what works best.

The Rocket exhaust is a thing of beauty.

When he’s not in mad-scientist mode fabricating, Weisman is dialing in suspension for a wide variety of disciplines, including the Sherco factory off-road race team for riders like Cody Webb and Cooper Abbott. Weisman put a lot of effort into making the suspension look wild on the outside with custom coatings, but the work done internally is what impresses us. This machine handles better than most modern-day production-built two-strokes we have tested that utilize the same chassis.

More attention to detail: The swingarm is coated white and makes the red accent parts from TM Designworks, Moto-Master and Dubya USA really pop out.
Bling factor on the White Knight is high, but is the overall look for everyone? No, but everywhere we go with it, people comment on it and conversations are started, usually long conversations that 100 percent of the time are positive and end with all parties walking away with smiles on their faces. In our book this makes it another successful build. Don’t worry, we have another build in the works with Weisman and The Ride Shop AZ crew.

Toyota’s Unique Approach to Hydrogen-Powered Land Cruiser with Combustion Engine

Toyota is dedicated to achieving zero emissions without completely phasing out the internal combustion engine. While some car manufacturers like Porsche are focusing on the development and production of synthetic fuels, Toyota has a different strategy. It aims to adapt traditional internal combustion engines to run on hydrogen. The turbocharged 1.6-liter engine of the GR Yaris and GR Corolla has already been tested in motorsport events as part of this initiative.

Besides the hot hatches, the HiAce van has also undergone modifications to run on hydrogen instead of gasoline or diesel. The utilitarian van is part of a pilot program in Australia, where various local companies will test the vehicles in real-world conditions. The van is powered by a turbocharged V6 engine borrowed from the Land Cruiser (LC300), with output sent to the rear axle through a ten-speed automatic transmission.

Twitter’s Community Notes Are Getting A Massive Video Expansion

Twitter’s Community Notes system is undergoing a significant expansion with the addition of video capabilities. However, it is crucial to note that this expansion does not aim to replace the important work carried out by dedicated fact-checking organizations. These organizations are often faster and have access to certified experts, without the limitations imposed by the consensus requirements of the Community Notes system.

According to an analysis by the Poynter Institute, achieving a cross-ideological agreement on truth, which is necessary for Community Notes, becomes increasingly difficult in the current partisan environment. The Community Notes system has been criticized for its disproportionate implementation of moderation, safety, and security features.

For instance, Twitter has faced accusations of censoring critical voices that target the government in countries like India and the Middle East. In these markets, content shared by journalists and media houses is frequently removed or withheld based on government requests. With upcoming elections in 2024 in both India and the United States, the importance of addressing such concerns will only grow.

Community Notes, in essence, places the responsibility of fact-checking on its most active users who possess expertise in specific fields. This approach differs from having a dedicated trust and safety team to perform this task. Notably, Elon Musk, following his assumption of control, initially reduced Twitter’s safety team but is now in the process of rebuilding it. This development comes as X, Twitter’s parent company, is lifting its ban on political ads in its domestic market, which was imposed in 2019.

Watch the Ducati DesertX Conquer the Australian Outback in this Trailer

In July 2023, Ducati made an impressive announcement regarding its DesertX motorcycle. The Tatts Finke Desert Race is a challenging off-road event that spans two days in the Northern Territories of Australia. To test the capabilities of the DesertX, Ducati product specialist and chief instructor of the Ducati Riding Experience Adventure Academy, Nick Selleck, planned to travel from Alice Springs to Finke and back on a single tank of fuel.

The journey covered a total distance of 460 kilometers or approximately 286 miles. The Ducati DesertX used for this challenge remained in its stock form and was not modified to accommodate a larger fuel tank. In August 2023, Ducati proudly announced that Selleck successfully completed the journey.

If you’re interested in seeing the adventure on video, Ducati recorded the feat and is currently producing a documentary film called Un-Finkeable. Although the full film is not yet available, the official trailer has been released to give a glimpse of what to expect.

The trailer showcases the stunning beauty of the terrain and the DesertX’s ability as Selleck maneuvers through the course. While it may not be a typical race, it’s certainly a race against time. Although we can’t know exactly what was going through Selleck’s mind during the ride, it’s safe to assume that adrenaline was running high.

The Finke Desert Race has been taking place annually since 1976. What started with a small group of motorbike riders has now expanded to include cars and off-road buggies. Alongside motorcycles, both two- and four-wheeled vehicles compete for the prestigious title of “King of the Desert” in various categories.

If you’re interested in experiencing the thrill of the Finke Desert Race yourself, the event occurs during the second weekend of June every year. Check out the official Finke Desert Race website for more information.

Did Pricing For The 2024 BMW R 1300 GS Accidentally Leak Ahead Of Launch?

If you’ve ever done any digital publishing, either for professional or personal reasons, then you probably have some idea of how easy it can be to publish something by accident. Mistakes happen sometimes, and if you’re lucky, you catch them in time.

What the concept of “in time” means depends on whether you’re the one who made the mistake, or the journalist digging for information. Thanks to some quick screencapping reflexes by someone at the German publication Motorrad, the global motorcycling community may have accidentally gotten a hint at pricing for the upcoming 2024 BMW R 1300 GS.

According to our European friends, the information briefly appeared in a BMW Financial Services drop down menu on the US website. The menu option was quickly yanked down, and our own inspection of that site and drop down menu shows that it’s no longer visible as of the afternoon of August 14, 2023.

2024 BMW R 1250 Financing Screenshot by RideApart- BMW Financial Services US Website, August 14, 2023

2024 BMW R 1250 lineup pricing (note the absence of the GS), screencapped on August 14, 2023 by RideApart.

If the information that Motorrad screencapped is correct, US pricing should be $19,590. Pricing for motorcycles by international OEMs is often not a direct conversion, so it’s not yet clear what (if anything) that pricing might mean for other markets.

A perusal of the same site on August 14, 2023, yields American market pricing information for the 2024 R 1250 GS Adventure, as well as the 2024 R 1250 R, RS, and RT. The R 1250 GS Adventure will be $21,440. The R 1250 R will be $16,040, the R 1250 RS will be $16,690, and the R 1250 RT will be $20,690. It’s not yet clear if there are plans for an R 1300 GS Adventure immediately upon its unveiling at the end of September 2023, nor how such an introduction might impact pricing of the R 1250 GS Adventure when it becomes available.

Still, if this screencap is accurate, it makes sense considering the pricing information we’ve seen for existing models. At this point, nothing is official until BMW confirms it, but it’s still an interesting potential glimpse into the future.

At this point, we’ve seen plenty of spy shots of the upcoming R 1300 GS in what must be the final phases of testing. BMW announced its plans to reveal the R 1300 GS to the world on September 28, 2023, which is slightly over a month away at the time of writing. We don’t know how soon after that date pricing and availability will be announced, but it will be interesting to see how accurate this leak ends up being.

Hyundai i30 Wagon Refreshed and Spotted in Spy Photos, Expected Release in 2024

The current generation of the Hyundai i30 is starting to show its age. While a significant update was done in 2020, the foundation of the vehicle dates back to 2016. We have already seen some updated prototypes, and now it’s time for some wagon love.

Our spy photographer captured a pair of prototypes outside the Hyundai technical center in Germany. At first glance, you might mistake these white four-doors for the i30 hatchback and fastback prototypes we’ve seen before. However, the presence of black roof rails reveals that these cars are actually wagons. Upon closer inspection, the backside of the vehicles reveals bigger side glass at the C-pillar, indicating the long-roof design typical of wagons.

Volkswagen Taigun Proves Itself Yet Again With 5 Stars In Latin NCAP Crash Tests

After its 5-star performance in Global NCAP last year, the compact SUV has done the same in the stricter Latin NCAP

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

The Volkswagen Taigun is the safest compact SUV in India right now with its 5-star Global NCAP safety rating. Following its impressive performance, it has just been crash tested in the more strict Latin NCAP, where it also scored a 5-star safety rating. Let’s see how it performed:

Safety Equipment

The Taigun that was crash tested was equipped with six airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard. The crash-tested unit also had optional autonomous emergency braking, which is not offered on the India-spec model. The made-in-India Taigun gets other safety features like ISOFIX child seat anchors, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a rearview camera.

Adult Occupant Protection

In adult occupant protection, the SUV scored 92 percent (39.99 points), which includes the overall scores of both frontal and side-impact tests. This test came with a 5-star adult occupant protection rating.

Frontal Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the frontal impact, the driver and passenger got ‘good’ protection on the head and neck. Chest protection was ‘good’ for the passenger and ‘marginal’ for the driver. Knee and tibia protection for both was ‘good’ and both of the driver’s feet also got ‘good’ protection.

Side Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the side impact test, the driver gets ‘good’ protection on the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis.

Side Pole Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

Just like in the side impact test, the driver gets ‘good’ protection on the head, abdomen and pelvis, but protection on the chest was ‘marginal.’

Child Occupant Protection

In child occupant protection, the Taigun got 92 percent (45 points). Here is how it performed:

Frontal Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In the frontal impact test, the child seats for both the 3-year-old and 18-month-old were installed facing the rear. In both cases, they were able to prevent head exposure and offered ‘good’ protection. For the younger child, the seat provided full protection.

Side Impact

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

In this test, both the child restraint systems (CRS) offered full protection. The Taigun has ISOFIX anchorages as standard and also has all the necessary markings. All seats are also equipped with three-point seatbelts.

Pedestrian Protection

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

The Volkswagen SUV scored 55 percent (26.47 points) in this aspect. Here, in most parameters, the Taigun got ‘good’, ‘marginal’ and ‘adequate’ protection. While protection on the lower leg was ‘good’, the upper leg protection was ‘weak’, which might be the reason for its low score.

Safety Assist

The Latin NCAP also tests the safety assist features of a car and the Taigun scored 83 percent (35.81 points). The SUV comes with seatbelt reminders for all passengers and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard. Although the Taigun does not get a full suite of ADAS features, the crash-tested model had autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as optional, thus meeting Latin NCAPs requirements.

Taigun In India

The India-spec Volkswagen Taigun comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC) and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) as standard. Depending on the upcoming regulations, it could also be updated to offer six airbags as standard. It is currently priced between Rs 11.62 lakh and Rs 19.46 lakh (ex-showroom).

Aston Martin Chairman Lawrence Stroll Believes He Should Be Knighted for Saving the Company

Lawrence Stroll, the executive chairman of Aston Martin’s road car business and owner of the Formula 1 team, believes that he deserves to be knighted for his efforts in saving the company and setting it up for future success.

In a media interview before the firm’s capital markets day, Stroll expressed his belief that he should be recognized for his achievements. He stated, “I should be knighted for what I’ve done. I’ve saved thousands of jobs and built a new Formula 1 factory with hundreds of millions of investment.”

Stroll emphasized the significant investment he has made in Aston Martin, which amounts to around £1.5 billion. He described it as a huge show of his belief in the company and its future success.

Setting Aston Martin up for long-term success has been a challenging task that typically takes between five and 10 years for industrial companies. However, Stroll believes that achieving this feat within just three years demonstrates his determination and commitment.

Despite negative media coverage affecting Aston Martin’s performance, Stroll remains confident in the brand’s future. He believes that external perception still carries a sense of negativity due to the impact of the company’s IPO, but he emphasizes that the current management team has made significant progress over the past three years and is focused on future endeavors.

Stroll draws attention to the evidence of Aston Martin’s success in the form of increased car prices and improved margins. The average sale price of an Aston is expected to rise from £157,000 in 2020 to £223,000 in 2023, with a margin goal of 40% for future cars.

Under Stroll’s leadership, Aston Martin has already introduced the Aston Martin DB12 and has plans for the Vantage and DBS replacements, the Valhalla mid-engined supercar in 2024, and the company’s first EV in 2025. The partnership with Lucid will provide crucial motor and battery cell technology for Aston’s upcoming electric vehicles.
