While none of the Maruti cars in India currently offer the blind spot detection feature, it appears that the fourth-generation India-spec Maruti Swift might become the first to incorporate it. In the spy shot above, you can clearly see the ORVMs equipped with a blind spot detection.

While the interior of the production-spec 2024 Maruti Swift has not been spied in detail, it is likely to have a dashboard layout similar to the one seen in the Japan-spec Swift concept. The spy shots also provide a sneak peek at the infotainment screen, which bears a resemblance to those 9-inch units found on other Maruti models.

In terms of features, the fourth-generation Maruti Swift is expected to have push button start/stop, wireless charging, cruise control, and automatic climate control. The safety kit could include up to 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold assist, and a rear parking camera.

What About Powertrain?

The India-spec 2024 Maruti Swift will most likely debut the updated version of the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine showcased at the Japan mobility show which is expected to offer a bit more torque. The current Swift’s 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol unit (90PS/113Nm) gets a choice between a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed AMT.

In India, the fourth-generation Maruti Swift is expected to go on sale with a starting price of Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). It will continue to rival the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios while being a sporty alternative to the likes of the Maruti Wagon R and Maruti Ignis.

New-gen Skoda Superb Unveiled, India Launch Likely In 2024

The new generation Skoda Superb has been unveiled globally and is expected to launch in India in 2024. The flagship sedan features a comprehensive update to its exterior design and an entirely revamped interior.

In terms of design, the new Superb showcases Skoda’s new Modern Solid design language. It comes in sedan and combi (estate) versions for the European markets, but only the sedan version will be available in India. The sedan version gets a redesigned front grille, updated LED headlights and DRLs, and a new front bumper. The fog lamps have been removed, and the rear end design has also been updated with new C-shaped LED tail lamps and an updated bumper design.

Moving on to the interior, the new Superb boasts a minimalistic design with multiple different cabin themes. The dashboard features vertical slats that conceal the corner AC vents, a large 13-inch central touchscreen, and physical dials for the multi-zone climate control. The centre console no longer features a drive-selector for automatic variants but includes a tray to keep your phone and cup holders. The upholstery is made from 100% recycled materials.

In terms of features and safety, the new Superb offers a 13-inch free-floating touchscreen infotainment system, a 10-inch digital driver’s display, head-up display, automatic climate control, a fast wireless phone charger, USB Type A chargers, powered front seats with massage function, ambient lighting, and a sunroof. Safety features include up to 10 airbags, electronic stability control, and various advanced driver assistance systems.

The new Superb will be available with different engine options in international markets. These include a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol mild hybrid, a 2-litre turbo-petrol, a 2-litre diesel, and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid. However, in India, it is expected to come with turbo-petrol engine options only, without the plug-in hybrid version.

The new Superb is set to launch globally early next year, and it is likely to be launched in India later the same year as a completely built-up unit (CBU). The expected starting price for the new Superb in India is around Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom), and it will compete with the Toyota Camry.

Clarity on autonomous vehicle laws needed ‘urgently’

A group of Members of Parliament (MPs) is calling on the government to urgently pass comprehensive laws for autonomous vehicles in order to prevent the UK from falling behind other countries. The cross-party Transport Committee believes that the current laws for self-driving vehicles are outdated and restrictive.

Fully automated driving systems are currently prohibited in the UK. Initially, they were expected to be allowed by 2021, but this deadline has been pushed back to 2022, and now possibly 2025.

The Transport Committee has recommended that legislation address safety, security, liability, as well as infrastructure and the use of personal data.

Iain Stewart, the Chair of the Transport Committee, stated, “Self-driving vehicles are a promising British success story, and we have a competitive advantage over many other countries. However, if the government fails to introduce a transport bill before the next general election, all of our hard work could be at risk.”

Stewart further explains, “There are various obstacles to the widespread adoption of self-driving vehicles, including public confidence in their safety and security, as well as the potential impact on other road users. To achieve the government’s goals for self-driving vehicle deployment, we must address these complex issues. We believe in taking a cautious and gradual approach, initially introducing SDV technologies in well-defined contexts to avoid unintended consequences.”

Recommendations

The MPs have raised concerns about the government’s proposed “safety ambition”, which states that self-driving vehicles should achieve a safety level equivalent to that of a competent human driver. They believe this ambition is too weak and vague.

The committee also suggests that the government should outline a strategy for the future of human driving in a world of self-driving vehicles. This strategy should include potential changes to driving tests and ensure that all drivers have a full understanding of self-driving technology.

Refreshed 2024 Hyundai Elantra Debuts With Updated Nose, Tech Upgrades

What about powertrains?

The facelifted XUV300 is expected to retain the current petrol and diesel engine options. These include a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine (110PS/200Nm) and a 1.5-litre diesel engine (117PS/300Nm). Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT. The current XUV300 also offers a T-GDi (turbo-petrol) engine (130PS/250Nm), but it is only available with the 6-speed manual. There is a possibility that Mahindra will replace the existing AMT with a torque converter.
