Toyota Racing Driver Ken Gushi On His Love of Drift

Ken Gushi is a racing driver for Team Toyota and a well-known figure in the world of Formula Drift. He has been driving for the series for as long as it has been in the United States, and he has always been behind the wheel of a Toyota.

Gushi expresses his excitement about being partnered with Toyota, stating that it is a dream come true for him. He grew up watching his father race the AE86 Corolla, and his family has always owned Toyota cars. Being able to represent Toyota as an athlete and share his story is something that still makes him feel good even after 15 years.

Gushi, who was born in Japan and now lives in Southern California, competes in Formula Drift with a Toyota GR Supra. He developed his love for drifting at a young age, learning to drive in his father’s Toyota AE86 when he was only 13 years old.

Despite coming from a family with limited financial resources, Gushi’s determination and talent led him to become the youngest competitor in the D1 Grand Prix and Formula Drift championships at the age of 16. He firmly believes that there is no dream too big to pursue.

Throughout his more than a decade-long partnership with Toyota, Gushi has become one of the most recognizable figures in drifting and has played a crucial role in the sport’s growth. He attributes his success to the support he has received from fans and the dedicated team members who have been with him throughout his journey.

Ken Gushi, Moty’s / Three’s Racing Toyota GR86

The Drift Difference

Drifting is a unique form of racing in which drivers maneuver their cars through a marked course while deliberately sliding sideways at high speeds. Unlike other motorsports that focus on speed or time, drifting is judged based on the execution and style of the slides.

In a Formula Drift event, drivers compete in tandem battles in a single-elimination bracket format. The drivers are ranked and placed into a bracket based on their qualifications, determining the pairs for the competition. Each driver competes one-on-one against another, and they are judged on their ability to complete the course with a high angle while maintaining fluidity and forward momentum.

Although drifting originated in Japan, Formula Drift is the first official drifting series in North America, established in 2003. Gushi has been involved in drifting for over 17 seasons and has witnessed the growth of the sport in the United States from its early days. He started his professional career in 2004, competing in the inaugural Formula Drift Championship in the U.S.

For Gushi, drifting is not just a job but a hobby that he is fortunate enough to get paid for. He feels a sense of accomplishment and joy when participating in the sport.

A Series Leader

Gushi has achieved multiple top-three finishes in the Formula Pro Championship standings throughout his career. His first victory was in 2005, which he remembers as a significant accomplishment and a moment of great happiness.

In 2019, as the owner-driver for Ken Gushi Motorsports, he finished 11th in the final standings and secured his first victory since 2005 in the series finale at Irwindale Speedway. His most recent win was in Salt Lake City in 2022.

During the Irwindale event, Gushi began the race in second position with his Toyota 86 and advanced to the Final Four after competing against several other drivers. In the final series, he faced a tough battle but ultimately emerged as the winner at the “House of Drift” in front of his home crowd. The victory holds a special place in his heart and is a moment he will never forget.

PLANO, Texas (June 21, 2023) – The Toyota Supra has been a legendary sports car for over four decades. From its first-generation roots as the Celica Supra in 1979 to today’s fifth-generation GR Supra, this model has captured the hearts of enthusiasts with its power, handling, technology, and style. To commemorate this history, Toyota is introducing a stunning 45th Anniversary Edition for the 2024 model year.

Built on the 3.0 Premium Grade, this special edition GR Supra features a low-slung, aggressive design highlighted by a large, manually adjustable rear spoiler. The spoiler can be adjusted to change its angle and affect the downforce on the rear wheels.

Over the years, Toyota has introduced special editions like the Launch, A91, A91 Carbon Fiber, and A91MT. The GR Supra has also undergone continuous improvements, with upgrades to its power, handling, and the addition of new models like the 2.0-L 4-cylinder and the Manual Transmission option. In 2020, Toyota GAZOO Racing started producing a GR Supra GT4 model for racing.

Customers can expect the GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition to arrive at Toyota dealerships in the fall of 2023. Pricing details for the special edition model and the complete 2024 GR Supra lineup will be announced at a later date.

Blast From the Past

The Toyota Supra first went on sale in 1979 as the Toyota Celica Supra in the U.S. The first-generation model, also known as the Mark I (MkI) Supra, featured a luxury, rear-wheel drive sports car design. It underwent several changes during its short production run and eventually became known as the A50 Celica Supra. It featured a 2.6-liter inline-six engine and was available with both manual and automatic transmissions.

In 1982, the second-generation A60 Celica (MkII) Supra was introduced. This model featured a 2.8-liter 5M-GE twin-cam straight-six engine and had a completely redesigned aerodynamic body. It included features like retractable headlights, an independent rear suspension, and a more aggressive overall look.

In 1986, Toyota introduced the third-generation A70 Supra (MkIII), dropping the Celica name and positioning it as a high-performance sports car. The A70 Supra featured a sleek, aerodynamic body with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produced up to 230-hp with the twin-turbocharged variant. It also introduced advanced features like anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an electronically moderated suspension.

The fourth-generation A80 Supra (MkIV) arrived in 1993. It featured a timeless design, two choices of inline-six engines (naturally aspirated or twin-turbocharged), and advanced features like electronically controlled suspension and driver/passenger-side airbags.

After an absence of nearly two decades, the Toyota Supra made its triumphant return in 2019 as the A90 GR Supra (MkV). It featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with up to 335-hp and 365 lb.-ft. of torque, delivering exhilarating performance. The GR Supra was the first model globally badged under TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s (GR) brand and marked Toyota’s commitment to driver-centered sports cars. Since then, Toyota has continued to enhance the GR Supra, introducing more powerful models, adding a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder variant, and offering a Manual Transmission option.

In addition to the road-going GR Supra models, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing also developed the GR Supra GT4 EVO for racing. The GT4 model allows professional and amateur drivers to compete in GT4 racing categories worldwide and has achieved success in various races and championships.

With the introduction of the 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition, Toyota celebrates the Supra’s legacy while delivering a thrilling sports car experience to enthusiasts.

  • Harnessing the power of data to create connected and resilient mobility ecosystems
  • Reducing environmental impact through low-carbon and renewable energy solutions

Shortlisted cities will be invited to attend a capacity building academy in the U.S. and will receive support developing their challenge design, becoming part of a wider network of other innovative city teams.

In February 2024, three winning cities will be selected to host a City Challenge to attract entries from global innovators. Innovators could be homegrown – living in the city or country chosen – or from anywhere across the globe, but with solutions applicable and adapted to the winning cities.

The winning innovators for each city will be announced in late 2024, and the cities and innovators will share $9 million in funding to test and roll out their solutions.

Increase mobility solutions for a more sustainable future

Many cities are now adapting to new behaviors and lifestyles, as our lives move increasingly online, and patterns of work change. With more than half of the world’s population currently living in cities, the United Nations predicts this will increase to two-thirds by 2050. Additionally, cities are responsible for 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The Sustainable Cities Challenge is funded by the Toyota Mobility Foundation and has been designed in partnership with Challenge Works and World Resources Institute. Challenge Works is an international leader in developing challenge programs to drive new thinking and find creative solutions to problems facing society. World Resources Institute is a global research organization which works with partners to develop practical solutions that improve people’s lives and ensure that nature can thrive.

“Brilliant people all over the world are working hard to create innovative solutions to help mobility systems work better, and with a lower carbon footprint,” Kathy Nothstine, head of future cities at Challenge Works, said. “The Sustainable Cities Challenge will help those innovators interface with cities to test and adapt solutions according to local needs to improve people’s lives. Challenges like this can act as catalysts for change by accelerating innovation in real-world settings.”

In addition to helping cities decarbonize, transforming mobility systems will help cities become more inclusive and accessible for the people living in them. Currently, 1.2 billion people living in cities do not have access to one or more core services.

“Cities are in need of innovations to foster sustainable mobility that reduces emissions, improves health, and increases access to jobs and opportunity for all,” Ben Welle, director of integrated transport and innovation at World Resources Institute’s Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, said. “The Sustainable Cities Challenge is an excellent opportunity for cities globally to build capacity and support innovators to work hand in hand with officials.”

Toyota Research Institute Unveils New Generative AI Technique for Vehicle Design

New Technique Gives Designers Added Capabilities by Incorporating Engineering Constraints Into Generative AI Models

LOS ALTOS, Calif. (June 20, 2023) – Toyota Research Institute (TRI) today unveiled a generative artificial intelligence (AI) technique to amplify vehicle designers. Currently, designers can leverage publicly available text-to-image generative AI tools as an early step in their creative process. With TRI’s new technique, designers can add initial design sketches and engineering constraints into this process, cutting down the iterations needed to reconcile design and engineering considerations.

“Generative AI tools are often used as inspiration for designers, but cannot handle the complex engineering and safety considerations that go into actual car design,” said Avinash Balachandran, director of TRI’s Human Interactive Driving (HID) Division, whose team worked on the technology. “This technique combines Toyota’s traditional engineering strengths with the state-of-the-art capabilities of modern generative AI.”

TRI researchers released two papers describing how the technique incorporates precise engineering constraints into the design process. Constraints like drag (which affects fuel efficiency) and chassis dimensions like ride height and cabin dimensions (which affect handling, ergonomics, and safety) can now be implicitly incorporated into the generative AI process. The team tied principles from optimization theory, used extensively for computer-aided engineering, to text-to-image-based generative AI. The resulting algorithm allows the designer to optimize engineering constraints while maintaining their text-based stylistic prompts to the generative AI process.

The new generative AI technique optimizes aerodynamic drag in successive iterations based on parameter inputs from the designer.

As an example, a designer can request, via text prompt, a suite of designs based on an initial prototype sketch with specific stylistic properties like “sleek,” “SUV-like,” and “modern” while also optimizing a quantitative performance metric. In the research paper, the team focused specifically on aerodynamic drag. The approach can also optimize any other performance metrics or constraints inferred from a design image.

“TRI is harnessing the creative power of AI to amplify automobile designers and engineers,” said Charlene Wu, senior director of TRI’s Human-Centered AI (HCAI) Division, whose team collaborated with the Human Interactive Driving team on this project.

By incorporating engineering constraints directly into the design process, this tool could also help Toyota design electrified vehicles more quickly and efficiently.

“Reducing drag is critical for improving the aerodynamics of BEVs to maximize their range,” said Takero Kato, BEV factory president, Toyota Motor Corporation.
