Inaugural Season Of GR Cup Series Wraps Up— GR86 Cup Car on Display at SEMA

The Toyota Gazoo Racing North America’s (TGRNA) Toyota GR Cup Race Series Featuring the GR86 Completes 14 Events at Seven Prestigious Circuits

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 31, 2023) – The Toyota GR Cup Race Series wrapped up the 2023 season with Tyler Gonzales of Copeland Motorsports locking in the points championship and taking the top spot on the podium. He was joined by TechSport Racing teammates Gresham Wagner and Spike Kohlbecker in second and third place, respectively.

Toyota Gazoo Racing North America’s (TGRNA) GR Cup Series provides amateur drivers and teams the opportunity to compete at some of the most iconic racing venues in North America while providing Toyota engineers with real world data to support the design of future vehicles. The inaugural Toyota GR Cup season proved a huge success by any measure.

“This series exceeded all of our expectations,” said Nick Miller, manager Motorsports Special Projects at Toyota Motor North America. “We set an internal goal of 20 cars at the first race and managed to finish the season with 31 drivers on-grid. The racing provided some real excitement with great wheel-to-wheel racing action,” Miller said.

The GR86 Cup Car on display at SEMA is based on the track-inspired engineering found in every Toyota GR sports car. While all GR86 Cup race cars are modified for competition, all began as production models shipped directly from the factory in Japan to TGRNA’s facility in North Carolina for race upfit. GR Cup Car bodies remain largely the same as any street-going GR86 but are made race-ready with a handful of modifications for increased performance.

Starting with its outward appearance, the GR86 benefits from aerodynamic enhancements in the form of custom bodywork by Stratasys®, a TGRNA-designed splitter, a carbon fiber rear wing, and a few other exterior tweaks. Inside the cabin, a roll cage lends to chassis stiffness for improved handling while providing the driver with a fortified cockpit, while OMP® safety equipment positions the driver securely behind the wheel. The chassis is then lowered with TGRNA-designed suspension components to ensure even sharper handling, while fuel capacity is increased with the addition of a 22-gallon fuel cell.

Improving driveline performance started with a motorsports-oriented ECU, courtesy of a Bosch®. Spent gasses leave the engine through a custom, higher flowing Borla® exhaust. A SADEV® 6-speed sequential transmission transforms torque at the crankshaft into forward motion, while large-diameter Alcon® brakes help to rein in speed. Together, these components were selected to level the field, limit set-up variability, and maintain as much series consistency as possible.

“We take an engineered vehicle designed to spec for the road and then apply our resources to make it race ready,” said TRD executive commercial director, Jack Irving. “It’s a marketing effort for us. It’s a development opportunity for drivers. We’re supporting grassroots racing. There’s big value in it, and there’s a lot of responsibility with that too,” Irving said.

The series presents a possible next leap in the performance-driving progression for GR owners who take advantage of the complimentary one-year National Auto Sport Association® (NASA) membership that comes with the purchase of any GR sports car. The program also includes one complimentary track day at a NASA High Performance Driving Event, giving GR owners performance driving experiences under the tutelage of expert instructors.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season and beyond, Toyota has set a goal of turning Gazoo Racing into the premier performance brand in the United States within a decade, and the Toyota GR Cup is a big part of that thrust. For 2024, the GR Cup series will continue to include 14 events at seven prestigious American racetracks. Kicking off in April at Sonoma Raceway®, the series continues on with races at Sebring International Raceway, the Circuit of the Americas, Virginia International Raceway, Road America, the newly added Barber Motorsports Park, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway®.

“We should start our first race next season with about 40 cars on-grid, the most we’ve ever had. We’re excited to welcome even more drivers into the GR Cup fold, and know the racing is going to be even more epic than before,” Miller said.

The GR86 Cup car is featured in the Toyota 2023 SEMA Show exhibit (Central Hall, Booth No. 22200) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Oct 31 – Nov 3, 2023.

The GR86 Cup car is a specially built race car for use only on closed courses. The GR86 Cup car is not certified to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and is illegal to drive on public roads.

Toyota GR Cup Uses Digital Trophies to Improve Driver and Fan Engagement

PLANO, Texas (August 1, 2023) – Toyota Gazoo Racing North America’s GR Cup Series is embracing technology to strengthen the connection between drivers and fans. With the help of Toyota Connected North America (TCNA), a software and data services company, the GR Cup Series has introduced personalized digital trophies that use polygon blockchain technology to showcase driver statistics, podium finishes, finishing position, and lap times. These digital trophies can be easily shared and are updated after every race weekend.

“With the GR Cup Series, we have an opportunity to incorporate technologies that will enhance the experience for our drivers and enable them to engage more effectively with racing fans,” said Jack Irving, executive commercial director, TRD. “Blockchain technology allows us to create a permanent digital record of drivers’ achievements, which they can share with their friends, family, and fans. It also opens new avenues for introducing our partners to race fans.”

The advantage of blockchain records is that they are non-fungible and provide an accurate representation of each driver’s performance after every race weekend. As drivers prepare for the upcoming Big Machine Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, they can easily access their accomplishments from the first three GR Cup weekends at Sonoma Raceway, Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, and Virginia International Raceway.

“We wanted to redefine the driver experience in the GR Cup Series, and the digital trophy program allows us to achieve that goal,” said Tim Muttitt, TCNA technical program manager. “By utilizing blockchain technology, we can ensure authenticity and focus on showcasing the driver’s talent. This unique technology gives drivers greater visibility.”

The GR Cup Series, currently in its inaugural season, is sanctioned by SRO and provides drivers and teams with the opportunity to compete at renowned racing venues in North America. This single-make series features the Toyota GR86 and consists of a total of 14 races, including double-headers at iconic tracks such as COTA, Virginia International Raceway, Road America, Sebring International Raceway, and the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

All GR86 Cup race cars start out as stock vehicles and are then modified for competition at the GR Garage, TRD’s state-of-the-art facility in Mooresville, North Carolina. At GR Garage, each GR86 is equipped with Bosch® engine management, a custom Borla® exhaust, SADEV® 6-speed sequential transmission, Alcon® brakes, adjustable JRI Shocks®, OMP® safety equipment, roll cage, carbon fiber rear wing, 22-gallon fuel cell, TRD-designed MacPherson struts, Stratasys® custom bodywork, a TRD-designed splitter, and more.

PLANO, Texas (June 21, 2023) – The Toyota Supra has been a legendary sports car for over four decades. From its first-generation roots as the Celica Supra in 1979 to today’s fifth-generation GR Supra, this model has captured the hearts of enthusiasts with its power, handling, technology, and style. To commemorate this history, Toyota is introducing a stunning 45th Anniversary Edition for the 2024 model year.

The GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition takes inspiration from the iconic 1990’s models and will be available in two striking colors: Mikan Blast (a deep orange) or Absolute Zero (a stunning white). Built on the 3.0 Premium Grade, this special edition GR Supra features a low-slung, aggressive design highlighted by a large, manually adjustable rear spoiler. The GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition continues the tradition of offering unique versions of the Supra since its relaunch in 2019. Over the years, Toyota has introduced special editions like the Launch, A91, A91 Carbon Fiber, and A91MT. The GR Supra has also undergone continuous improvements, with upgrades to its power, handling, and the addition of new models like the 2.0-L 4-cylinder and the Manual Transmission option. In 2020, Toyota GAZOO Racing started producing a GR Supra GT4 model for racing.

Customers can expect the GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition to arrive at Toyota dealerships in the fall of 2023. Pricing details for the special edition model and the complete 2024 GR Supra lineup will be announced at a later date.

Blast From the Past

The Toyota Supra first went on sale in 1979 as the Toyota Celica Supra in the U.S. The first-generation model, also known as the Mark I (MkI) Supra, featured a luxury, rear-wheel drive sports car design. It underwent several changes during its short production run and eventually became known as the A50 Celica Supra. It featured a 2.6-liter inline-six engine and was available with both manual and automatic transmissions.

In 1982, the second-generation A60 Celica (MkII) Supra was introduced. This model featured a 2.8-liter 5M-GE twin-cam straight-six engine and had a completely redesigned aerodynamic body. It included features like retractable headlights, an independent rear suspension, and a more aggressive overall look.

In 1986, Toyota introduced the third-generation A70 Supra (MkIII), dropping the Celica name and positioning it as a high-performance sports car. The A70 Supra featured a sleek, aerodynamic body with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produced up to 230-hp with the twin-turbocharged variant. It also introduced advanced features like anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an electronically moderated suspension.

The fourth-generation A80 Supra (MkIV) arrived in 1993. It featured a timeless design, two choices of inline-six engines (naturally aspirated or twin-turbocharged), and advanced features like electronically controlled suspension and driver/passenger-side airbags.

After an absence of nearly two decades, the Toyota Supra made its triumphant return in 2019 as the A90 GR Supra (MkV). It featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with up to 335-hp and 365 lb.-ft. of torque, delivering exhilarating performance. The GR Supra was the first model globally badged under TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s (GR) brand and marked Toyota’s commitment to driver-centered sports cars. Since then, Toyota has continued to enhance the GR Supra, introducing more powerful models, adding a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder variant, and offering a Manual Transmission option.

In addition to the road-going GR Supra models, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing also developed the GR Supra GT4 EVO for racing. The GT4 model allows professional and amateur drivers to compete in GT4 racing categories worldwide and has achieved success in various races and championships.

With the introduction of the 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition, Toyota celebrates the Supra’s legacy while delivering a thrilling sports car experience to enthusiasts.

2023 Toyota Crown Receives Modifications from Tuner Including Quad Exhaust and Rear Wing

The world of Japanese tuning is expansive, and it’s not uncommon for Toyota to offer Gazoo Racing appearance packages for cars like the Prius and some minivans straight from the factory. Therefore, it’s no surprise that a domestic tuner has taken on the task of modifying the new Crown. Tom’s has customized the vehicle, starting by lowering the suspension to bring it closer to the ground.

This modification significantly changes the appearance of the car and aligns it more closely with the Crown Sedan that Toyota plans to release later this year in Japan. In addition to the suspension adjustment, Tom’s has added a substantial front spoiler lip, chunkier side skirts, and a sporty diffuser. However, the rear of the vehicle raises some questions. The quad exhaust tips and large wing may seem excessive.

The showstoppers in the episode include an adrenaline-pumping car chase in a snowy mountain road, a high-speed dash out of a roadside trap, and a dusty getaway in a one-horse Western town.

The episode, a four-minute spot shot across different locations in California and Park City, Utah, sees professional drivers behind the wheel of GR sports cars, including TGR-NA drivers Frederic Aasbø and Ken Gushi, and Ryan Tuerck. They bring the creative team’s ideas to life while the executives continue to give them notes. The episode also pays tribute to an old Corolla commercial from Australia. It is the conclusion of a three-part series that launched the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing brand and the U.S. lineup.

The episodes, created by Sweatpants Media in association with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, showcased the self-expression and fun-to-drive characteristics of Toyota’s stylish sports cars. They sought to establish the brand’s unique identity in the eyes of young Americans.
