Supermarkets Confirmed to Have Inflated Fuel Prices, CMA Reports

A recent report by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has revealed that supermarkets raised fuel prices by an average of 6p per litre last year. The report states that weakened competition allowed supermarkets to take advantage of the situation and inflate pump prices. CMA chief Sarah Cardell expressed concern over the impact of these higher prices on vulnerable individuals, especially those residing in areas with limited fuel station options.

The investigation found that Asda, which was fined £60,000 for lack of cooperation, and Morrisons, the two cheapest fuel retailers, were responsible for initiating this increase. Both supermarkets made the decision to target higher profit margins in the past year. Asda aimed for a fuel margin in 2023 that was more than three times what it had been in 2019, while Morrisons doubled its margin target within the same period.

However, other retailers such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco did not respond to these changes in the way one would expect in a competitive market. Instead, they raised their prices in line with the inflation introduced by Asda and Morrisons. The CMA report concluded that these developments indicated a weakening of competition and emphasized the need for swift action.

In addition to petrol, diesel prices also experienced a slow decrease in 2023. Asda was accused of “feathering” its prices by reducing them at a slower rate compared to falling wholesale costs. Furthermore, other companies failed to respond competitively to these market dynamics. The CMA estimates that diesel drivers paid 13p per litre more from January to May 2023 than the historic average, due to inflated margins.

In light of these findings, CMA proposed the implementation of a “fuel finder scheme,” which would provide drivers with access to real-time fuel prices at different stations through their mobile phones or sat-navs. This scheme aims to revitalize competition within the retail road fuel market.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Turns 8 Years Old

In June 2015, Alfa Romeo unveiled the production version of the highly anticipated Giulia. This event marked the start of Alfa Romeo’s plans to reestablish itself as a leading automobile brand. The Giulia was created by a team of talented engineers, designers, and stylists and was the first of eight new models planned for the next three years. However, the only other notable vehicle to follow was the Stelvio in 2017.

Motor1 Numbers Alfa Romeo Giulia

Since its introduction in 2016, the Alfa Romeo Giulia has sold approximately 160,000 units in Europe, North America, and certain countries in Asia and the Middle East. Although it did not achieve its ambitious sales targets, the Giulia proved to be a highly competitive sedan.

The Giulia also played a crucial role in Alfa Romeo’s expansion into the North American automotive market. Despite launching a sedan at a time when demand for sedans was declining, Alfa Romeo managed to make an impact in the market.

And Now?

Many people are wondering whether there will be a successor to the Giulia and how quickly Alfa Romeo will continue to expand its lineup. With the decreasing demand for sedans worldwide (except in China), it is unlikely that a new Giulia will maintain the same style as the current model.

Last year, global sales of premium D-segment sedans decreased by 2 percent, with China being the exception with a 5 percent increase. In the US and Canada, sales increased by 1 percent, while in Europe, the third-largest market, sales decreased by 25 percent.

Motor1 Numbers Alfa Romeo Giulia

It appears that Alfa Romeo is shifting its focus towards SUVs and crossovers. After the introduction of the Tonale in the second half of 2022, the company plans to launch a smaller SUV to compete with models like the Mini Countryman and Volkswagen T-Roc. SUVs in this size category have proven to be successful for the brand, as the Tonale accounted for 67 percent of Alfa Romeo’s new registrations in Europe between January and May of this year.

The Lessons Learned

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a fantastic product that showcased cutting-edge engines and a modern platform upon its release. Its eye-catching design stayed true to the brand’s identity without being excessive. Despite its modest commercial success, the Giulia proved to be a strong contender against German sedans.

Motor1 Numbers Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Giulia’s underwhelming sales can be seen as an initial test for Alfa Romeo, highlighting the changing preferences of customers in the premium segment. However, it is expected that Alfa Romeo will continue to offer a successor to the Giulia, possibly in a different format.

BMW Motorrad Italy Presents Pre-Owned Program: BMW Timeless

In a unique approach to selling pre-owned motorcycles, BMW Motorrad Italy has gone beyond the conventional methods by transforming old bikes and scooters into a genuine product line, regardless of their age and date of first registration.

Alessandro Salimbeni, General Manager of BMW Motorrad Italy, stated, “A BMW motorcycle that has already traveled a long way is a motorcycle that has already experienced adventures and has a story to tell. Each BMW Timeless vehicle has explored different landscapes, overcome challenges, and is ready to embark on new journeys with its new owner. If a motorcycle’s value lies in its history, BMW Motorrad’s responsibility is to nurture and preserve that value over time. With BMW Timeless, our brand becomes even more inclusive and accessible. We now consider pre-owned BMWs to be on par with our new products, offering not only exclusive services like BMSI maintenance packages and tailored financial solutions but also an entire brand campaign. In the current market scenario, I firmly believe that used BMWs present an intriguing alternative to new products, even from other brands.”

Original Quote:

BMW Motorrad Italy Timeless Pre-Owned Program

Instead of simply selling pre-owned motorcycles as they are or slightly refurbished for riding, BMW Motorrad Italy has introduced a more significant pre-owned program called BMW Timeless. With this program, BMW Motorrad preserves its legacy by offering a new product line featuring the brand’s classic models. BMW Timeless brings a fresh perspective to the table, celebrating the love for vintage motorcycles. This program could potentially be expanded to other countries, catering to customers who have a desire for well-maintained vintage motorcycles that were originally sold by the manufacturers themselves.

2024 Renault Rafale Coupe-SUV Debuts With 300 Horsepower

Renault has introduced the new Rafale, a D-segment coupe-style sport utility vehicle (SUV) that embraces the brand’s new design language. The Rafale features a fresh front grille design and new matrix LED light signature, similar to the recently facelifted 2024 Clio.

The Rafale is larger than its predecessor, the Arkana, and is the brand’s first model to fully embrace the coupe-SUV body style in the mainstream market. While it may not match the practicality of traditionally styled SUVs due to its sloping roofline, the Rafale still offers a generous cargo capacity of 530 liters (18.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats in place.

In terms of trim options, the Rafale is available in a flagship Esprit Alpine trim, which is also offered for the Espace model. It shares its 2.74-meter (107.8-inch) wheelbase with the Espace.

2023 HIGH POINT NATIONAL MX RESULTS

The 2023 Pro Motocross season made a stop in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania on Father’s Day weekend, bringing a different vibe to the races. The 450 class featured a showdown between Ken Roczen and Jet Lawrence, as Roczen aimed to challenge Lawrence’s path to the championship. However, heavy rainfall before practice caused complications, making it crucial for riders to set a good lap time in the first qualifying session. Roczen seized this opportunity by setting a blazing time, while Lawrence struggled with minor crashes interrupting his session. In the 250 class, Justin Cooper experienced a crash during qualifying, while his teammate Haiden Deegan secured the fastest time. 250 MOTO 1

In the first 250 moto, the track was a muddy and rutted nightmare. RJ Hampshire took the lead initially, with Jo Shimoda in second. However, Shimoda went down in the second turn, causing a massive pile-up that also affected series point leader Hunter Lawrence. Haiden Deegan and Jalek Swoll battled for a few laps, but Deegan eventually broke free. As the race progressed, Lawrence made impressive progress through the pack, while Deegan kept a close eye on Hampshire. In a dramatic finish, Hampshire managed to retake the lead on the last lap. Lawrence also passed Swoll for third place at the very end.

450 MOTO 1

Jett Lawrence took the holeshot in the 450 class with Ken Roczen starting around fifth. Roczen quickly moved up to second place and attempted to catch Lawrence throughout the race. However, every time Roczen made some progress, Lawrence responded and maintained a 4-second lead. Garrett Marchbanks managed to keep up with the front runners, while the rest of the field gradually fell behind. During the race’s midway point, Lawrence had a fall, allowing Roczen and Marchbanks to pass him. Although Lawrence quickly regained his position ahead of Marchbanks, it took several laps for him to catch up to Roczen. The two riders engaged in a thrilling battle, with Lawrence briefly overtaking Roczen, who retaliated and recaptured the lead a few turns later. Eventually, Lawrence secured the lead for good. Roczen stayed within a couple of seconds until he fell on the final lap, struggling to restart his Suzuki and settling for 7th place.

The 2023 3-Bros 10 Hours of Glen Helen took place this weekend under a gift of cloudy skies. That’s a rare treat for Southern California riders in June. Usually this particular round of the Glen Helen Enduro Series suffers from 100-degree temperatures. Not this time. The 8-mile course held up well and the event had a record turnout. The winners were considered a shoo-in from the start. A four-man team of Dante Oliveira, Mateo Oliveira, Taylor Robert and Ryan Morias seemed like an overwhelmingly talent-heavy combination. As the race unfolded, though, there were several teams who cold have stolen the overall. One was the duo of Carter Klein and Clayton Roberts, who held the lead for well over an hour in the morning. Nissan Formula E Team takes double top-five finish in Jakarta

JAKARTA, IndonesiaNissan Formula E Team took their best result of the season in Jakarta, with Sacha Fenestraz and Norman Nato both putting in excellent performances to take fourth and fifth respectively in Round 11 of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

After a tough first race of the weekend for the squad, Fenestraz claimed second in his qualifying group on Sunday, progressing to the Duels. The Franco-Argentine driver started seventh, and got an excellent launch off the line, moving up to fourth by the end of Lap 1.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Nato was making solid progress through the field, keeping cool in the Jakarta heat to make places during the Attack Mode phase. Having started 12th, Nato avoided incidents ahead of him and used his speed and overtaking ability to move further into the top-10.

Helped by the team’s strong strategy, both drivers continued to push into the higher points-paying positions, challenging for a podium spot until the final corner. The pair combined for 22 points, the squad’s best result of the season so far.

Formula E returns on 24 June for the final single-header of the season, as the series makes it first visit to Portland, USA.

Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal, Nissan Formula E Team: “A rollercoaster of a weekend, with a tough race yesterday and a really good one today. We were stronger in qualifying and had a much better strategy during the race. Both drivers did a great job, with some impressive overtakes. Sacha even battled for the podium until the final corner, while Norman’s defense was very solid at the end of the race. We can be very happy with our performance and proud of the team and drivers. Our focus now is to take this positive showing into the next round in Portland to pick up even more points there.”

Sacha Fenestraz: “This weekend was a good way to see our strengths and weaknesses as a team. Today was a very positive race, it was great for the crew to reward their hard work over the last few months. Yesterday was quite frustrating, but we came back strongly and both cars had very good pace. Norman did a superb job to come from P12 on the grid to P5 at the finish and I’m really happy that we both took a strong result. The heat was definitely a challenge, but the humidity was the most difficult. However, we pushed through as a team to score some really good points. I’m now looking forward to Portland, it’s a brand-new track for all of us so it should be an interesting one!”

Norman Nato: “Today was really positive. We changed the setup, because yesterday we weren’t so competitive and it worked for us. We managed to put it all together in the race and react from the frustration of Saturday to get a great result for both cars. We’ll now look to analyze this one to see what we can do to continue improving for Portland. We had strong pace throughout today’s event, so we have to aim to score big points for the rest of the season. We’re not far off the leading teams based on this performance, and we have five races left to prove what we can do this year.”
