The Pros And Cons Of Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries are a huge leap in technology, and the auto industry is embracing it wholeheartedly. GM, Volkswagen, and many others are investing substantial amounts in SSB technologies over the next decade. SSBs are lighter, safer, charge faster, and have a longer life span than traditional lithium-ion batteries. So, why isn’t every manufacturer using them? Solid-state Batteries are still a relatively new technology. Creating and manufacturing them on a large scale has presented its own set of challenges. The cost of these batteries is much greater, and while electric vehicle price tags are some of the highest in the auto world, these batteries just aren’t really feasible at this time. The scarcity of a reliable candidate for a solid electrolyte also plays a role. If solid-state batteries are going to rule the auto industry one day, these challenges must be addressed. Let’s look at some of these pros and cons in detail.

Solid-state Batteries Extend EV Range Substantially

Late last year, NASA unveiled some of the solid-state battery technology that it has been working on. NASA’s battery reportedly has twice the energy density of the lithium-ion batteries currently in a typical EV. They achieved this with their innovative Solid-state Architecture Batteries for Enhanced Rechargeability and Safety or (SABERS). SABERS is being developed in order to make a sustainable aircraft, but imagine buying a Lucid Air and not having to stop for 1,000 miles. Hell, even a Chevy Bolt with 400 miles would be a dramatic improvement. There is no doubt that solid-state batteries would all but eliminate range anxiety. In addition to having more range, you are also able to charge faster. QuantumScape, a leader in the space, has claimed that its solid-state battery technology has produced 10-80-percent charge capacity in just fifteen minutes, over 400 times consecutively. The company has recently entered a partnership with Volkswagen to develop vehicles with solid-state batteries in only the next few years. If these science nerds have their math right, that should give the ID.4, currently with a 250-mile range, a much-needed boost in both range and charging capabilities.

As With Everything, There Is A Cost

With such an immense upside, It’s hard to imagine the emergence of solid-state batteries as anything except positive, but as the great Mark Frost once said “there can be no light without darkness”. The process to make a solid-state battery is complex. Because the battery uses no liquid electrolyte to transfer energy from cathode to anode, or vice versa, there has to be a solid electrolyte to take its place. Materials for this kind of technology are scarce and very expensive. On top of that, there is no standardized material that is used in the manufacturing process, and no standardized process in which they are made. This makes them extremely hard to mass produce. Some estimates put Solid State batteries at three-four times the price of traditional lithium-ion batteries. Those costs can add when you are talking about a vehicle that already can cost as much as $200,000 for a top-of-the-line model. Are the savings worth the added mileage and faster charging? That is for consumers to decide, and presumably, they will get their chance. Many major automakers including GM, Toyota, and Mercedes have all invested heavily in solid-state battery technology, in hopes of increasing range and charging capabilities.

Solid-state Batteries Mean Fewer Explosions

General Motors E-Crate

Lithium-ion batteries have created some pretty memorable explosions over the years. These are often espoused early and often by EV skeptics, and for good reason. We all remember the Galaxy Note 7 recall. If you don’t, open up a new tab and browse YouTube for a few minutes, it’s worth it. And, phones exploding in your pocket is just the tip of the iceberg. More recently, a fire in the Bronx required the attention of 200 firefighters after an electric scooter battery exploded in an apartment building. This is only one example of the over 200 fires from lithium batteries last year in New York alone, and that’s a small battery by electric vehicle standards. What happens if the Chevy E-Crate, with its six-foot-long, 1,000-pound battery is made or installed wrong? A recall, like the one for the Chevy Bolt, could be devastating to the company, and more importantly, to the auto enthusiast who just wanted to revive their old K-10. The possibility of solid-state batteries solving this massive problem, I think most people would agree, is worth exploring. There is a reason that most pacemakers use solid-state batteries. If these batteries can be manufactured at scale, grandpa can rest easy knowing his heart and his car aren’t going to give out unexpectedly.

New Technology Works Great In A Lab, But What About The Real World?

Earlier in this article, I cited NASA and its SABERS battery. There has been a tremendous amount of success in a lab setting. Toyota itself currently holds over 1,600 patents relating to solid-state battery technology, again for success in the lab. But how does that translate into a roadworthy vehicle, and does it at all? The answer is a solid, maybe. Currently, most automakers plan to release solid-state battery electric vehicles toward the end of the decade or later. That leaves a lot of time for speculation and bold claims, without needing anything concrete to back them up. However, a Chinese company named Baoya plans to release one later this year. The Baoya FB77 has aims of being the first production vehicle with a solid-state battery, in the sedan market. So far, the only contender for the crown is Mercedes, which produces an electric bus in Germany, that contains a solid-state battery. The challenge to overcome is the heat. The battery used in this bus operates at around 175 degrees. That’s not going to cut it on a summer day in Florida. That may be the biggest challenge for all EVs using solid-state batteries. So far all the claims and projections have mentioned that the batteries are lighter and denser, and that distinction will allow them to take up less space. But if there is extra cooling needed, we may be trading battery space for cooling space.

How Long Will A Solid-state Battery Last?

solid state battery
Nissan
a cutaway shot of a lithium ion battery next to a solid state battery.

It’s almost common knowledge at this point that electric vehicles are expected to last longer than a traditional internal combustion vehicle. Currently, it is required by the government that EVs carry a warranty of eight years or 100,000 miles. California went a step further and made it 10 years or 150,000 miles. That doesn’t appear to have stopped any of the automakers from moving forward to an all-electric future, so the claims have some weight behind them. Taking into account that all EVs are currently lithium-ion batteries, what does that say about what we can expect from solid-state batteries? Batteries with a solid electrolyte are purported to be 2-3 times denser than lithium ions, and some tests have shown that they can last twice as long or better. As I stated previously, we are still in the lab stage of the new technology, but if these tests translate into the real world, then the future of electric vehicles is looking very bright.

2023 SUZUKI DR650S: DUAL-SPORT TEST

We have mixed feelings about the Suzuki DR650S. On one hand, we appreciate the fact that Suzuki has kept this model in production for over 32 years. On the other hand, it is still a motorcycle that is essentially 32 years old. However, despite its age, the DR650S has its merits and continues to be offered in the market.

The Suzuki DR650S is a big, air-cooled single-cylinder motorcycle with a carburetor. It is priced at $6999, which is the same as a Yamaha YZ125 motocross bike. What’s interesting is that the DR650S is still manufactured in Japan, while most other motorcycles in this price range are made in countries like China, Thailand, or Vietnam. As a result, the DR650S stands out as one of the last remaining models of its kind.

LOOKING BACK
The roots of the DR650S can be traced back to the 1978 Suzuki SP370, the company’s first four-stroke off-road bike. Over the years, it evolved into the present-day DR650S with various updates and improvements. In 1993, the electric starter was introduced, which was a major step forward. Today’s DR650S remains fundamentally similar to the initial version. In the late 90s, the DR650S was considered one of the top dual-sport bikes in terms of performance and handling.

middle content two stroke

THE DR TODAY
Despite the DR650S remaining largely unchanged, its role in the market has shifted. It is no longer considered a high-performance bike or a traditional dual-sport model. Instead, it serves as an entry-level adventure bike. The bike’s design and layout reflect its 90s heritage, with a thick seat and handlebars that sweep back towards the rider. Vibration is minimal thanks to rubber-mounted footpegs and handlebar weights. The power delivery of the big single-cylinder engine is torque-oriented, offering a distinct and satisfying acceleration experience. While it lacks the rev-happy nature of modern bikes, the DR650S produces more torque than many of its rivals. Its tall gearing allows for cruising at low RPM, making it comfortable for long rides on dirt roads. However, the bike may struggle on fast trails due to its street-oriented tires and limited suspension adjustability. It is also relatively heavy compared to its competitors.

The 2023 Suzuki DR650S is still around. It sells for $6999.

WHERE WE STARTED
The Kawasaki KLR650 remains the closest competitor to the Suzuki DR650S. While the KLR650 has received updates and now features fuel injection, the DR650S remains unchanged in terms of its carbureted engine. Fuel injection is seen as an added complexity and expense in a bike like the DR650S. Despite its age, the DR650S still finds its place in the modern world and has an enduring appeal. We believe it deserves to continue being produced indefinitely.

German men’s biathlon team tests in the BMW Group wind tunnel.

+++ Technology transfer enhances mobility partnership between the BMW Group and DSV Biathlon +++ German’s male biathletes test in the wind tunnel for the first time +++ Valuable findings with regard to stance and aiming process +++ Reference points for further optimisations and innovations +++

Munich. Since last autumn, the BMW Group has been “Mobility Partner of the German National Biathlon Team” and has provided the team with electrified vehicles. Within this partnership, BMW has allowed the DSV biathlon squad to perform tests in a wind tunnel for the first time. In the different wind speeds and directions generated in the controlled laboratory conditions in the BMW Group’s Aerolab, the DSV men were able to analyse their body posture, their reactions to different conditions, and the movement of their weapons when shooting whilst standing.

Here, where the NEUE KLASSE of BMW cars are usually put through their paces and optimised aerodynamically, it was now the German biathletes who for two days had the opportunity to examine their stance and aiming process in the wind. With the athletes too, it was all about identifying potential for improvement, as biathlon races are often decided at the shooting range.

“The BMW Group wind tunnel is our main test centre, as far as aerodynamics are concerned. Here, we are able to determine the proportions and finer details of the vehicle, making it as efficient as possible and thus increasing electrical range,” says Holger Gau, Head of Dynamics Mid-Range BMW. “With the biathletes, we analysed the sensitivity of the shooting with a side wind. As we are able to generate consistent conditions in the wind tunnel, the athletes were able to adopt different postures, which could then be analysed and compared.”

Pressure points and pressure distribution were measured using sensors on the soles of the biathlon shoes. A measuring device was mounted on the barrel of the gun, which recorded the aiming and shooting process. The athletes were also observed in the wind tunnel by cameras and trainers. Last but not least, the analysis also incorporated the subjective feelings of the biathletes.

“We have just one challenge – and that is to be as successful as possible in competition. However, to master this challenge you have to do something in an awful lot of areas. You have to be progressive, if you want to break into the world elite,” says Uroš Velepec, coach of the DSV German men’s biathlon squad. “As such, it is very valuable to be given the opportunity to test in a wind tunnel for the first time. Together with the aerodynamics experts in the BMW Group, we have developed some really significant tests. The results are already promising. We are very grateful to BMW and I hope this partnership will continue to develop on a technological level.”

As well as the individual analysis of the standing position in the wind, and the compensatory movements, Velepec also took another approach: without naming names, he is convinced that there are athletes in the German men’s squad who are among the best in the world when shooting in the wind. The goal now was to find out how these athletes act intuitively and to use that to develop a model, which could be applied to others. “We can now see what these athletes are doing differently,” said Velepec after the wind tunnel tests. “We always suspected it, but we now have proof and know how they do it.”

Karlheinz Waibel, DSV National Science and Technology Coach, is also impressed by the two days in the wind tunnel and the cooperation with the BMW Group engineers. He says: “We planned the tests together with the BMW experts and wanted to know how they would approach them. We were asked questions, which we were unable to answer, because we did not have any knowledge from the past. That is how we came up with exciting and clever ideas, which we will continue to pursue – with regard to aerodynamic improvements to the gun, for example.”

It will take a few more weeks to evaluate and analyse the data acquired, but one thing is already certain: the German national biathlon team’s first trip to the BMW Group’s Aerolab will not be the last.

PEUGEOT REVEALS NEW 2008 WITH UPDATED DESIGN AND NEW ELECTRIFIED POWERTRAINS

The new 2008 features an updated design which reflects its move upmarket and strengthens its SUV status. The model has a new, wider front end incorporating the new PEUGEOT shield and includes a specific lateral pattern that connects to the headlamps. On Active versions, the front end is enhanced with a horizontal pattern in gloss black, while on Allure and GT versions, the front end has a vertical pattern in the same colour as the bodywork.

The front of the new 2008 also adopts the latest PEUGEOT light signature first seen on the new 508 and 508 SW, which is characterised by three vertical light claws integrated into the gloss black inserts on the bumper. GT versions feature exclusive full LED headlamps made up of three light modules. This distinguishes the GT versions from the rest of the range by giving them an exclusive front-end signature.

At the rear, the new 2008’s distinctive three-claw light signature has also been redesigned. The LED rear lights are made up of three superimposed horizontal double slats, which help to visually widen the car’s stance. The reversing lights and indicators are also LEDs.

The front, side and rear badges of the new 2008 have been given a new typeface and are finished in a new Basalt Grey colour, while the new e-2008 has an “E” badge in Dichroic Blue and White. At the rear, the PEUGEOT monogram runs across the entire width of the boot lid.

The new 2008 is available with alloy wheels ranging from 16-18 inches, with a disruptive design in line with those introduced on the new PEUGEOT 408. Customers have a choice of six body colours: Selenium Grey, Cumulus Grey, Okenite White, Nera Black, Elixir Red and Vertigo Blue. All versions feature gloss black door mirrors, while GT models feature a black bi-tone roof.

PEUGEOT i-Cockpit®

PEUGEOT’s innovative i-Cockpit® has been updated for the new 2008, with a new design for the 10-inch digital instrument cluster, which features a 3D display on GT versions. The colour of the display, the order and the layout of the information can be fully adjusted to suit the driver’s preferences.

All new 2008 models now come with a 10-inch central touchscreen as standard. Under the central screen, the piano keys allow quick access to key functions.

CITROËN INTRODUCES NEW Ë-SERIES EDITIONS ACROSS Ë-C4, Ë-C4 X AND ELECTRIFIED C5 AIRCROSS MODELS

  • New ë-Series versions add distinctive style and enhanced levels of technology to Citroën’s electrified model range.
  • Ë-Series follows on from Citroën’s earlier ‘C-Series Edition’ trim level, which delivered value and generous specification across the passenger car range.
  • Body colour options enhanced with the availability of a black bi-tone roof and special alloy wheels across each model.
  • New ë-Series variants are available to order now, with first deliveries expected in July.

Citroën UK has announced a new ë-Series line-up, available across its electrified C-segment models. The new cross-range ë-Series trim offers more style and technology, plus the use of additional recycled materials. Much like the earlier ‘C-Series Edition’ that enhanced the value-for-money offering across Citroën’s passenger car range, the new ë-Series editions add fresh styling cues and more technology across ë-C4, ë-C4 X and electrified C5 Aircross models.

All three models share key design elements, such as a Perla Nera Black bi-tone roof and black alloy wheels, as well as exclusive ë-Series exterior badging.

Ë-SERIES: NEW SIGNATURE FOR THE ELECTRIFIED C-SEGMENT RANGE

  • Sitting at the top of the range for both ë-C4 and ë-C4 X, ë-Series versions of both vehicles come with the new My Citroën Drive Plus infotainment system and keyless start, as well as heated front seats and an upgraded Citroën HiFi system. Ë-Series variants will be available with the existing 100kw (136hp) – 50kWh powertrain with a WLTP range of up to 222 miles, as well as the new 115kw (156hp) – 54kWh version with a WLTP range of up to 260 miles.

  • Based on the existing ‘Shine’ trim level, C5 Aircross ë-Series editions will gain Highway Driver Assist, an opening panoramic glass sunroof, and heated front seats. Ë-Series models will be available with the 225 Plug-in Hybrid powertrain, as well as the new Hybrid 136, which combines a specially developed 136hp PureTech petrol engine with 48V battery technology, alongside a new electrified dual-clutch ë-DCS6 gearbox and a 21kW electric motor – reducing CO2 emissions by up to 15%/

Across all three models, the use of electrified powertrains helps add to the sense of on-board serenity and well-being, with a smooth ride and reduced noise.

A DYNAMIC AND CONTRASTING VISUAL IDENTITY

All three model silhouettes share the same exterior identity based on shared elements, creating a look that is prestigious, elegant, and dynamic.

The first of these elements is the Perla Nera Black roof that is standard on ë-Series trim editions. Already a familiar option on C4 and C5 Aircross, this bi-tone roof design is a new feature on the ë-C4 X range. The entire roof is painted black – which is particularly in keeping with the dark-tinted rear window – giving a fluid feel, and an appearance that makes the car look more dynamic. With this two-tone combination, ë-C4 X takes on the air of a coupé, but without losing the practicality of its spacious rear seat and large boot.

In addition, each silhouette benefits from full-black alloy wheels, with 18-inch ‘Aeroblade’ black alloy wheels on ë-C4 and ë-C4 X that are new and specific to these ë-Series models, while C5 Aircross Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid ë-Series variants gain 19-inch ‘Art’ black alloy wheels. For added contrast, each vehicle is presented with tinted rear side windows, rear quarter windows and rear window.

The combination of the optional Pearl White body colour with the black roof is the signature look of this new ë-Series collection, although customers can also choose other colours available in the range.

Ë-Series versions also come with Citroën’s Dark Chrome colour pack, which is applied to the front bumper inserts and the Airbump® panels, giving each model a distinctive touch. This pack is exclusive to the ë-Series on ë-C4 and ë-C4 X (although already an option on C5 Aircross). Finally, all ë-Series variants come with an “ë-Series” monogram, a clever mix of glossy black, aluminium and white, positioned at the rear of the three vehicles.

A NEW LIGHT INTERIOR AMBIANCE FOR GREATER SERENITY

Comfort and well-being is a true differentiator for Citroën. Ë-Series versions of C5 Aircross take this commitment to heart by offering an exclusive light interior ambience. The choice of light and warm materials is intended to create a brighter interior harmony, offering a soothing atmosphere, while enhancing the sense of space inside the cabin. Ë-Series editions banish negative thoughts to help you relax in a cocoon of comfort.

This light colour is applied with a tone-on-tone contrast for an even more striking interior ambience. The light grey seats, backrests, and armrests are set off by the medium grey applied to the edge of the seat, contours, upper backrest and headrests, as well as the central and door armrests. The horizontal seat upholstery design, which extends into the door panels, helps to reinforce the perception of width on-board and gives great coherence to the passenger compartment.

An interior with a focus on detail adds value to the occupants. This is the case, for example, in the design of the seats, which feature the ‘bubble panels’ characteristic of Citroën style, providing the graphic signature of the seats and visually reinforcing the notion of comfort. The same goes for the band on the upper part of the seat, which features a herringbone pattern. To finish the look, ‘ë’ labels are added on the inside of the front seats, which act as the ë-Series signature.

For customers who want a more dynamic and darker interior, the C5 Aircross ë-Series trim is available with Alcantara® seats in the existing dark ambience.

All ë-C4 and ë-C4 X ë-Series versions feature the popular mid-grey Alcantara® ambience that has been well received on the ‘Shine Plus’ versions of these models.

A NEW WARM AND RESPONSIBLE ALCANTARA® UPHOLSTERY

Ë-Series versions choose quality materials such as Alcantara® for the seat, backrest and armrests. This fabric adds to the perceived quality and warmth of the interior. Soft to the touch, it also provides better support for occupants.

Specifically, on C5 Aircross ë-Series versions with the light grey interior ambience, the Alcantara® fabric is manufactured using an innovative process with 68% of its outer surface made of recycled fibres.

CITROËN INTRODUCES C5 AIRCROSS HYBRID 136: A NEW AND ACCESSIBLE ELECTRIFIED OFFERING WITH NO RE-CHARGING REQUIRED

  • New Hybrid 136 powertrain adds 48V hybrid technology to C5 Aircross line-up.
  • C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 features a specially designed PureTech petrol engine, a new electrified dual-clutch ë-DCS6 gearbox, and a 21kW electric motor.
  • Powertrain offers electric-only driving for use in urban areas, helping to reduce local emissions.
  • Addition of 48V hybrid technology improves fuel economy by up to 30% in urban use.
  • UK order books for C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 open in June, with first deliveries expected in July.

Citroën has revealed a new electrified powertrain option for C5 Aircross – the efficient Hybrid 136. Based on the latest compact and lightweight hybrid technology, this new powertrain features a 48V battery pack that re-charges in use, a 136hp PureTech petrol engine that has been specially designed to accommodate the new hybrid system, coupled to a new electrified dual-clutch ë-DCS6 gearbox and a 21kW electric motor.

Emitting only 129g of CO2/km according to the combined WLTP cycle, C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 emits 15% less CO2 than the equivalent non-electrified petrol C5 Aircross derivative.

Priced similarly to an equivalent C5 Aircross diesel model, C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 emits almost 12% less CO2 than the diesel-powered version.

C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 enhances the C5 Aircross electrified range, which also includes the Plug-in Hybrid 225.

Most importantly, the introduction of C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 accelerates Citroën’s electrification strategy. The Citroën electrified range is now made up of 10 models: from Hybrid 136 to 100% electric, alongside Plug-in Hybrid, from Ami to New C5 X, and from passenger cars to commercial vehicles, each new introduction with the aim of offering a powertrain that meets customer needs.

THE NEW 48V HYBRID TECHNOLOGY IN DETAIL

The new 48V hybrid technology allows for either mixed or 100% electric driving. The lightweight and compact hybrid technology is based upon:

  • A new-generation 1.2 PureTech petrol engine, specially developed for hybridisation (40% of the parts are new), with three cylinders and 1199cc, delivering 136hp (100kW) at 5500 rpm and torque of 230Nm at 1750 rpm.
  • The choice of a variable geometry turbocharger and timing chain contributes to the new powertrain’s performance and robustness. Complying with the Euro 6.4 standard, and operating in accordance with the Miller cycle, the engine also features improved thermal efficiency.
  • The permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor can develop peak power of 21kW (28hp), and torque of 55Nm. It allows C5 Aircross to be driven on 100% electric power for low torque requirements, at low speeds, when manoeuvring or slowing down, and assists the petrol engine when starting. During deceleration, it acts as a generator to charge the battery, which reduces wear and tear of the brakes at the same time.
  • A belt starter, powered by the 48V on-board system, allows the petrol engine to start quickly and responsively.
  • A new electrified dual-clutch gearbox – ë-DCS6 – comes with a six-speed dual-clutch system with no torque break and is also specifically designed for hybrid systems. The gear changes are noticeably smoother, and the drive is more comfortable. The electric motor, the inverter and the ECU are all integrated, optimising space under the bonnet.
  • A 48V Lithium-Ion battery pack, with an available capacity of 432Wh, is installed under the left front seat, so there is no impact on boot size or interior space.
  • In addition, thanks to a voltage converter, part of the electricity produced by the 48V electric system is transformed into 12V power to supply the car’s on-board equipment. This way, two separate electrical networks can exist side-by-side.

C5 AIRCROSS HYBRID 136 Ë-DCS6: EASY ACCESS TO ELECTRIC MOBILITY

With this new hybrid powertrain, Citroën is offering a new electrified alternative that provides the comfort of purely electric driving, saves fuel, and reduces CO2 emissions.

C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 can be driven in electric mode for a limited distance in the city, or on short drives, or when manoeuvring. The 48V hybrid technology optimises the performance and fuel consumption of C5 Aircross, with average fuel savings of 15% compared with the PureTech 130 EAT8 automatic petrol versions. Efficiency is even greater when in urban areas, with average fuel savings of almost 30%.

The 48V hybrid powertrain also has a positive impact on CO2 emissions, with a reduction of up to 15% (20g) compared with the PureTech 130 S&S EAT8 petrol version. C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 achieves 129g of CO2/km according to the combined WLTP cycle.

The electric motor also delivers an additional 9kW (approximately 12hp), helping acceleration. As the battery re-charges automatically when the car decelerates, the new powertrain makes daily use more comfortable and will appeal to customers who want to experience driving in electric mode without the need to re-charge.

STILL THE BENCHMARK FOR ON-BOARD COMFORT

C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 ë-DCS6 keeps all the on-board comfort and features of C5 Aircross (Citroën Advanced Comfort® suspension and seats, space and modularity), along with all the customisation options customers expect, and the same high levels of equipment.

For further ease of use, the digital instrument panel has been upgraded with a specific display. Drivers have all the information they need about hybrid driving directly in front of their eyes. without the need to look away:

–               Tachometer in blue to show 100% electric driving mode.

–               The energy flow of the hybrid powertrain.

–               Battery charge level.

–               Driving mode via a power meter (Charge, Eco, Power).

–               Percentage of distance travelled in electric mode, at any time, and on average.
