New Porsche 911 GT3 RS Beats Old GT2 RS To Set Road America Production Car Record

The previous-generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS’s record has been surpassed by the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS at Road America. The GT3 RS completed the four-mile, 14-turn track in Wisconsin nearly two seconds faster. Professional race car driver Dimitri Dimakos drove the track-focused machine from Zuffenhausen, achieving an impressive time of two minutes and 13.8 seconds.

In April 2019, David Donohue set the now-obsolete record with a time of 2 minutes and 15.1 seconds. Despite the 991-generation GT2 RS having 700 horsepower and the new GT3 RS “only” having 518 hp, the 992-generation GT3 RS proved to be substantially faster. This can be attributed to its comprehensive aero package.

To pay homage to 100 years of BMW Motorrad, Oehlerking has infused “The Crown” with a distinctive design language that embodies power, elegance, and innovation. The build starts with a stripped-down BMW R 18, which is then transformed with meticulously handcrafted body parts made of 2 mm thick aluminum sheet metal. These parts form an 8-liter fuel tank and a unique double-sided swinging arm with central suspension strut in the front wheel suspension.

In terms of performance, the engine and rear suspension remain true to the original BMW R 18. However, the dual stainless-steel exhaust manifolds are completely hand-made, highlighting Oehlerking’s commitment to craftsmanship. Alpina B5 GT 2023 first drive

Alpina, a German automobile manufacturer known for its luxurious interiors and bespoke craftsmanship, will produce less than 6000 cars before BMW takes over in 2026. The future of Alpina after the transition remains uncertain, as it is unclear whether the mechanical excellence for which the company is renowned will continue to be prioritized over profits.

Out of the limited production run, only a small number will be the B5 super-saloon model. Based on the outgoing M550i, the B5 is a performance-focused car that embodies Alpina’s philosophy of being incredibly fast yet understated. It is a flagship model for the brand.

The current model of the B5 is a perfect blend of a supercar’s speed and a limousine’s comfort. While it may not handle like BMW’s M5, it offers excellent body control, adjustability, and precise steering. This makes it an exceptional choice for all types of driving.

Now, Alpina introduces the B5 GT, which builds upon the strengths of the regular B5 while adding some extra features. This special model serves as a final tribute to Alpina’s involvement with the G30 5 Series and the culmination of six decades of building cars based on BMW platforms.

Only 250 units of the B5 GT will be produced, primarily in Touring estate form, and all of them have already been sold. Deliveries are scheduled to start later this year, but customers who have selected the full Lavalina leather interior may have to wait until the end of 2024, as Alpina’s meticulous craftsmanship takes time.

Mechanically, the B5 GT is mostly similar to the previous B5, which is no longer available. However, it features a new intake and some electronic enhancements that increase the power output of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine from 612bhp to 625bhp. This makes it the most powerful car in Alpina’s history, with an official top speed of 205mph, although unofficially it can reach 220mph.

But what truly sets this car apart is its astonishing mid-range performance, especially in real-world driving situations. The torque output is exceptional, with the B5 GT producing 13% more torque than the M5 CS. With 627lb ft available from 3500rpm, it rivals the power of Aston Martin’s recent DBS 770 Ultimate.

Exciting Final Day at the 34th BMW International Open: Joost Luiten in the Lead with a Pack of Competitors Close Behind

On “Moving Day,” Joost Luiten from the Netherlands takes the lead at -14. Max Schmitt is the top German player at -8. The third round witnesses the tournament’s 50th eagle hit by Jamie Donaldson, and the tee times for the final round are set.

The leaderboard is dominated by Joost Luiten and Daan Huizing, both from the Netherlands. Luiten leads at -14, followed by Huizing at -11. Edoardo Molinari from Italy, Thriston Lawrence from South Africa, and Daniel Hillier from New Zealand are tied for third at -10. Luiten secured the lead with an impressive round of -7, the lowest of the tournament. Huizing, Molinari, Lawrence, Max Kieffer from Germany, and Matthieu Pavon from France, all at -7, sit at ninth place with just one shot more than Luiten’s round on Saturday.

Luiten, at 37 years old, showcased his skill in front of the 14,000 spectators at Golfclub München Eichenried. He did not drop a single shot on Saturday and heads into the final day with a three-shot lead, aiming for his first title since 2018. Luiten expressed his excitement for events like the BMW International Open, stating the need for such tournaments in Europe. He remains focused and aims to deliver shots similar to those on Saturday.

Max Schmitt is the highest-ranked German player at -8, tied in sixth place with Sami Välimäki from Finland and Rikuya Hoshino from Japan. With one round to go, the 25-year-old remains a contender for his first title on the DP World Tour. Schmitt expressed his joy at being part of the special BMW International Open, especially since his first participation as an amateur. He plans to stick to his “passive aggressive” strategy and concentrate on his own game on the final day.

Max Kieffer climbed up the leaderboard with an excellent round, landing him in a tie for ninth place at -7. He harbors the dream of becoming the second German winner of the BMW International Open, after Martin Kaymer’s victory in 2008. However, Marcel Siem’s third round did not fare well, as he experienced a triple bogey on the 18th after finding the water twice.

In the morning, Connor Syme achieved the third hole-in-one of the tournament on the second hole. This adds to the aces achieved by Takumi Kanaya and Joost Luiten in the previous rounds. Three out of the four par 3 holes on the Championship Course have witnessed a hole-in-one, leaving only the 17th where the first fully-electric BMW i5 is up for grabs for the first player to ace it.

Jamie Donaldson from Wales recorded the 50th eagle of the tournament in today’s round. Each eagle hit results in a donation of 1,000 Euro to the “JOBLINGE” and “Kick ins Leben” organizations as a gesture of recognition for their partnership with the BMW Group in promoting fair opportunities and educational equality.

VAUXHALL WINS BIG AT THE GREAT BRITISH FLEET AWARDS 2023

Vauxhall has been awarded the title of ‘Fleet Manufacturer of the Year’, at last night’s Great British Fleet Awards 2023 in Milton Keynes organised by Fleet World. The Vauxhall Astra, Corsa and Vivaro were also celebrated, taking home the ‘Best Lower Medium Fleet Car’, ‘Best Fleet Supermini’, and ‘Medium Van of the Year’ titles, respectively.

The ‘Fleet Manufacturer of the Year’ title reflects Vauxhall’s position as one of the UK’s most versatile fleet operators. Across its Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment, it is one of the few manufacturers in the country able to offer fleets an electrified variant across its entire model line-up, alongside diesel versions. Vauxhall has been the UK’s best-selling e-LCV manufacturer for the past two years running.

Vauxhall’s passenger vehicle range has also grown significantly over the course of the past 12 months, with the brand now selling electrified variants across every model with the exception of the Crossland. By 2028 it will be an electric-only manufacturer, seven years ahead of the UK Government deadline. Vauxhall’s commitment to electrification, and its versatile product range is making it easier for businesses to go green.

The Vauxhall Vivaro was named the ‘Medium Van Of the Year’ at last night’s awards. The award winning Vivaro has been the UK’s best-selling electric light commercial vehicle for two consecutive years. Available with a 50kWh or a 75kWh battery, the Vivaro Electric achieves a WLTP range of up to 205 miles from a single charge and comes with a maximum payload of up to 1,226kg. The Vivaro Electric is joined by the Combo Electric and Movano Electric. 

The Fleet World judges named the Vauxhall Corsa as their ‘Best Fleet Supermini’, a fitting title for the UK’s best-selling supermini of 2022, while the Astra took home the award for ‘Best Lower Medium Fleet Car’.

Both Corsa and Astra continue to be popular options for both private and fleet buyers. Astra offers efficient petrol and diesel variants as well as a highly efficient Plug-in Hybrid model capable of travelling up to 43 miles (WLTP, EAER) on electric power alone. Corsa has been available as a fully electric variant since 2020. The latest Corsa Electric provides up to 222 miles of range (WLTP) from its 50kWh battery, while a 0-80% charge takes just 30 minutes to complete from a 100kW rapid charger. The Astra Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric will be joining the Vauxhall range later this year, providing even more electric vehicle options for fleet customers.

FIAT REVEAL THE TOP 10 SCENIC ROUTES IN THE UK

The stunning North Coast 500 which takes in the sights of Northern Scotland has been named the most scenic road to drive in the UK according to research from Fiat.

A study of 2,000 motorists saw the 516 miles of epic coastal scenery, sandy beaches and rugged mountains, which starts and ends at Inverness Castle, come out on top, followed by the Kendal to Keswick road trip in the Lake District.

North Somerset’s Cheddar Gorge through the Mendip Hills was third and Cornwall’s route from St Ives to St Just came in at fourth.  The coastal A39 linking Minehead to Barnstaple, the A82 leading to mystical Loch Ness, and The Black Mountain Pass in the Brecon Beacons were also among the top 10 beautiful roads to drive in the country.

It also emerged 78 per cent of drivers prefer to take the scenic route when travelling to a destination – to make the most of the view.

Research was commissioned by Fiat to launch the guide Scenic Drives Near Me: The Best Drives In The UK 

The interactive map, which takes into consideration those that drive electric cars like the fully electric convertible Fiat 500 – details great roads, interesting waypoints, electric charge points and features a pre-loaded route that can be downloaded to a mobile phone.

Greg Taylor, Managing Director, Fiat and Abarth, said: “It’s interesting to see the best open roads in the country to drive.  The NC500 in Northern Scotland has always been a popular choice, with its additions of remote fishing villages and a wealth of unforgettable experiences along the way. But let’s not forget the Snake Pass in the Peak District, the Cotswolds or even the best of the Moors in Yorkshire – all incredible roads to explore on any given day. Clearly there are motorists who are keen on taking a more scenic route to their destination.”

The study also found 72 per cent believe the UK has some of the most scenic roads in the world.

Further findings revealed 54 per cent prefer taking a picturesque journey even if it takes them longer to get to their location.

Of those, 44 per cent said driving on longer roads helps them de-stress while 41 per cent enjoy going somewhere they haven’t been to before.  And 38 per cent said it gives them more freedom in the open road – with 57 per cent finding driving in general relaxing.

It also emerged the ocean, rolling hills and mountain cliffs were also among the types of beautiful scenery drivers want to see while driving.  Scotland was named the best region to drive in the UK, followed by London and the South-West of England.

Nearly two in 10 motorists prefer to drive a convertible, with 29 per cent envious whenever they drive one with the rooftop down.  According to OnePoll data, poor road conditions often prevent drivers from taking a scenic route while 29 per cent were put off by poor traffic. Other reasons for avoiding a longer journey include having to talk to passengers, worrying about the fuel tank and driving on unfamiliar roads.

Over half, 56 per cent, of drivers who have driven through a scenic route said they get jealous of other passengers who can concentrate on the beautiful views.  While seven in 10 have pulled over the side of the road to admire the scenic views.
