THE 2024 HUSKY TE150: A BETTER 200? THE WRAP

Last week, we had the opportunity to test the all-new 2024 Husqvarna TE150. This bike comes with numerous updates, including a new chassis, motor, electronic powervalve, and throttle body fuel injection system. When we look at the history of this bike, we can see that Husqvarna has been making adjustments to its purpose. The first version of the Husky 150 in 2017 was a carbureted two-stroke with both a kickstarter and an electric starter. It entered the market at the end of the 200cc two-stroke era in the U.S. However, it wasn’t the best replacement for a 200, as it lacked low-end power and smooth power delivery. It did have a good motor for racing and performed well on motocross tracks with some suspension modifications. The 2020 version had transfer port injection, which improved things a bit, but still didn’t meet the expectations of fans of the old 200cc bikes. Now, with the new TBI motor, the Husqvarna TE150 is a more legitimate option for those riders.

2024 Husqvarna TE150

This motor is loosely based on the Husky TC125 motocross bike from last year. It is one of the most computerized dirt bikes on the market, with the powervalve, spark advance, and fuel delivery all controlled by a complex matrix of programming tied to rpm and throttle opening. It also employs various sensors for temperature, gear positions, and air density, making it highly advanced. The cylinder, head, and displacement have been modified from the TC125 to provide an off-road powerband, and the six-speed gearbox has different gear ratios.

Pete Murray on the new Husky 150.

The chassis of the TE150 is also new, with the major highlight being the WP Xact coil-spring fork, replacing the open-cartridge Xplor fork of the previous model. The new fork has structural and valving differences compared to the Xact air fork, making it more suitable for off-road riding. The rear suspension features an Xplor shock connected via linkage, which is slightly less advanced than the one on the TC125. Both bikes share the same spring rates. The TE150 also comes with Braktec components for the brakes and hydraulics. With a larger fuel tank, a headlight, a kickstand, and an 18-inch rear wheel, the TE150 is slightly heavier than a typical 125 two-stroke, weighing 220 pounds without fuel. It’s also more expensive than a 125 two-stroke, with a price tag of $10,199.

The Husky 150 is the latest dirt bike to break the $10,000 barrier. The MSRP is $10,199.

On the trail, the TE150 doesn’t ride like a typical 125. It has impressive low-end power, allowing you to confidently open the throttle even at idle without any hesitation. It performs well on rocky uphill trails and doesn’t require clutch covering to prevent stalling. In many ways, it feels like a miniature 300 two-stroke. Although it doesn’t possess the same level of pulling power as a larger bike, its overall behavior is quite similar. The mid-range power delivery is fairly strong, resembling that of a 125cc bike, but it lacks the peak power and revs necessary for motocross tracks. The TE150 does feature a map switch, like other recent Husqvarna two-strokes, but its purpose is different. The green map on the TE150 enriches the fuel mixture slightly, which proves useful when riding in sand or under heavy load conditions.

The suspension of the TE150 is highly praised. The new fork is a significant improvement over the previous version and may even outperform the Xact air fork. The TE150 is stiffer than its predecessor, making it well-suited for aggressive off-road riding with intermediate or expert riders weighing over 150 pounds. However, younger riders transitioning to a larger bike might find the suspension a bit firm. So, who is this bike for? In summary, the TE150 is an excellent all-around off-road bike suitable for riders of all ages. Older riders typically gravitate towards larger bikes, but the TE150 would be a better choice for 90 percent of the trails they ride. Its agility and easy handling contribute to a sense of improvement in riding skills. The only areas where it might struggle are open spaces and steep hills, where the power advantage of 300cc and 450cc bikes becomes apparent. NEXT UP: KTM 300SX

Ray Obermeyer on the 2024 KTM 300SX

We also have the KTM 300SX in our garage, which will be our next testing subject. It’s interesting how people say modern 450cc bikes are too powerful for average riders, but we didn’t hear the same about 250cc two-strokes in the past. Nowadays, 250cc two-strokes are considered more challenging to ride compared to 450cc bikes. The 300SX is potentially easier to handle than a well-built 250cc two-stroke, but only in its mildest setting. The bike features a map switch on the handlebar, allowing riders to completely alter its personality. We’ll dive deeper into this subject next week and provide an upcoming video review on Dirt Bike’s YouTube channel.

RANDOM HARD-DRIVE SEARCH

Remember when Travis Pastrana was a motocross/supercross star? He won the 125 National Championship in 2000 and the 125 East Supercross title in 2001. Unfortunately, injuries prevented him from further success in the sport. However, he later excelled in freestyle, NASCAR, Rally car, and many other areas. It’s interesting to think about what might have happened if he had continued in motocross. One thing’s for sure: he wouldn’t have achieved as much.

Lamborghini Sterrato Driver Requires Snorkel for Off-Roading on Day One of Ownership

When it comes to the proper break-in method for a new car, opinions vary greatly. It’s a topic that can spark heated debates among automotive enthusiasts. However, let’s take a break from that discussion and instead watch a video featuring someone who firmly believes in the concept of breaking in a car aggressively. And we’re not talking about just any vehicle, but a $280,000 Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato that goes from the showroom to a mountain stream in a matter of minutes.

In this video from Ron on YouTube, we witness the journey from the Lamborghini dealership in Salt Lake City, Utah, to the great outdoors. Though the actual drive may have taken longer than what we see in the video, the driver wasted no time as he received the car and immediately headed for the hills. “Literally within the next hour, this will have mud all over it,” he confidently stated at the dealership. “I’m taking it out right now.” A mere 93 miles later, the Lamborghini left paved roads behind.

The Porsche 911 S/T: A Lightweight Throwback With the Heart of a GT3 RS

In 1969, Porsche released a limited batch of racing versions of their 911 S called the 911 ST. These cars were designed for performance, featuring wider wheel arches and lightweight construction. Now, 50 years later, Porsche is revisiting this concept with the introduction of the 2024 Porsche 911 S/T. Based on the GT3 Touring, the S/T utilizes lightweight materials to shed an additional 70 pounds and is powered by the GT3 RS’ 518-horsepower flat-six engine, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. Only 1,963 of these cars will be produced.

2024 Porsche 911 S/T

Engine 4.0-Liter Flat-Six
Output 518 Horsepower / 343 Pound Feet
0-60 MPH 3.5 Seconds
Weight 3,056 Pounds
Base Price $291,650 (Including A $1,650 Delivery Fee)
Availability Spring 2024

The 2024 Porsche 911 S/T takes the GT3 Touring as its starting point but goes further to reduce weight. It incorporates carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic components for the body panels, a set of magnesium wheels, ceramic composite brakes, lightweight glass, a lithium-ion battery, and reduced insulation. Additionally, the S/T removes the GT3’s rear-axle steering system, resulting in a curb weight of 3,056 pounds.

2024 Porsche 911 S/T

Under the hood, the S/T boasts the same 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-six engine found in the GT3 RS. It produces 518 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque, which is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. To further enhance performance, Porsche has developed a single-mass flywheel that reduces rotating mass by 23 pounds. These modifications allow the S/T to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 186 mph.

While the S/T is equipped with components that would make it excel on a track, Porsche designed it to be primarily enjoyed on public roads. Inside, the S/T features carbon-fiber bucket seats, a digital gauge cluster with green accents reminiscent of 911s from the 60s, and the classic-style Porsche crest.

2024 Porsche 911 S/T

Porsche plans to produce only 1,963 units of the S/T in homage to the year the 911 was first introduced. Each car will have a base price starting at $291,650, including a $1,650 destination fee. Deliveries are expected to begin in the Spring of 2024.

Chinese automaker BYD has revealed the UK pricing for its new small electric car, the BYD Dolphin. With deliveries expected to begin later this year, the Dolphin is priced at £25,490 in the UK and €29,990 in mainland Europe. This makes it one of the most affordable electric cars currently available, undercutting rivals like the MG 4 EV by approximately £500.

The BYD Dolphin offers customers a choice of four trim levels: Active, Boost, Comfort, and Design. The Active and Boost trims are equipped with a 44.9kWh battery, providing a range of around 211 miles and 188 miles, respectively. The Comfort and range-topping Design models feature a larger 60.4kWh battery, offering an impressive range of 265 miles. With a length of 4290mm, the BYD Dolphin falls between the Peugeot e-208 and the Volkswagen ID 3 in terms of size. It shares the same e-Platform 3.0 as the BYD Atto 3 family hatchback, which was launched in the UK earlier this year.

2025 BMW M2 Will Soon Be More Powerful Than The M3

A confirmed reliable BMW insider has revealed that starting with August 2024 production, the BMW M2 engine will jump up to 475 horsepower from the current 453 horsepower for the 2025 M2 model. This would put it above the current base M3’s 473 horsepower, although BMW enthusiasts predict the M3 and M4 may also receive a power bump as well. User “Ynguldyn” on Bimmerpost.com, the source of these updates, wants to make it clear that the model in question is not the CS or Competition package.

This news came as a bit of a shock to the BMW community on Bimmerpost.com, as talks of selling began to swirl between current M2 owners in the comments section. Regardless of the buzz, collectors and BMW enthusiasts will have to wait until August 2024 to get their hands on the juiced-up M2, which is also reported as featuring new wheel options and some cosmetic changes. The 2024 M2 competition package release date is not yet specified.

As stated before, user “ynguldyn” on Bimmerpost.com reports that the 2025 M2 model that is rumored to receive a power increase to 475 horsepower is NOT the 2023 or 2024 M2 Competition model. User “ynguldyn” has been a member of Bimmerpost.com since 2010, and has established a reputation for being a trusted and knowledgeable insider. His post regarding the power boost coming to the BMW M2 pertains to the production of the 2025 M2 starting in the fall of 2024 after the 2024 M2 hits the market.

Though “ynguldyn” is a reliable source, BMW is known for its ever-evolving perspective on performance, as they have been among the top of their class since the early days of the manufacturer.

Currently, the BMW packs a powerful companion to its line-up with the M2 variant. Powering the performance-inspired model is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six that makes 453 horsepower, which is 20 horses shy of the base M3 model. All M2 models are rear-wheel drive and offer the option between a six-speed manual transmission, or an eight-speed automatic transmission, though elite drivers have praised the responsive eight-speed manual for combining driver assist features with manual control, making for an exciting driving experience.

The EPA reports a combined mileage of 19 MPG, with the 2023 BMW M2 getting 16 city and 24 highway MPG. The 3.0-liter inline-six is the same engine found in the M3 and M4 models, though it puts out slightly fewer horsepower, making 406 pound-feet of torque with a top speed of 155 MPH.

Car And Driver’s test runs with the M2 report the sportscar was able to achieve 60 MPH in 3.5-seconds and was able to reach 100 MPH in 9.0 seconds. The M2 completed a quarter-mile in 12.1 seconds. Those looking to raise the top speed of their M2 can upgrade to the M Drivers Package, which will allow you to achieve an eye-watering 177 MPH, impressive for any luxury performance coupe.

BMW M2 Offers Premium Driver Assist Technology

Orange 2023 BMW M2 driving on a mountain road

BMW is a well-known luxury and performance car manufacturer, with many iconic models to its name. Whether on the track or on the streets, BMW is a name synonymous with style and speed. The current 2023 M2 model starts at $63,195 and though it shares many of the same features as the previous model M2, the 2023 model cranks up the performance and technology to ensure the BMW M2 keeps evolving.

With advanced voice recognition technology, the 2023 M2 feels like the car of the future, especially when you consider all the driver assist features that come standard on this sportscar, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, standard lane-departure warnings, and for a little extra on the price tag, advanced stop-and-go assist is an optional upgrade, though it is important to note that the advanced stop-and-go features are only available for the eight-speed automatic transmission M2 models.

Notable Driver Assist Features

  • Standard Navigation
  • Auto Emergency-Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Optional Stop-And-Go Cruise Functionality

(note: Stop-and-Go functionality is only for automatic M2 models.)

A Driver-Focused Cockpit Remains The Hallmark Of The BMW M2

The M2 features the same interior layout as the regular 2-Series coupe, with plentiful driver and front passenger space, while those located in the rear seats may feel a bit cramped. The design of the M2 remains sporty, as the seats are more reminiscent of racing seats.

The dash is now digitalized, featuring a wide 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel displaying gauges and everything else one would need to know about their vehicle, standard navigation, and optional head-up display. The big digital display behind the steering wheel seamlessly blends into an even bigger 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment interface that powers BMW’s latest iDrive8 operating system. The M2 features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities and optional 5G connectivity.

The optional carbon-fiber package adds carbon-fiber elements to the interior of the M2, as well as swaps out the standard seats for more aggressive bucket seats, which reduce total weight by 24 pounds. The upgraded racing seats and carbon fiber add to the track sensibilities BMW is known for, as their past M variations have amplified the performance offered in the base 2-Series models.

The Future Of The BMW M2 Looks Strong

2023 BMW M2 With M Performance Parts
BMW
2023 BMW M2 with the M Performance Parts does not only look stunning but can lure customers to opt for it, since the standard look is a bit controversial

The 2024 BMW M2 is set to release in the Fall of 2023 and is estimated to start at around $62,000, on par with past M2’s MSRP upon release, if not a few grand less. With many of the same features as the current 2023 model. Since the M2 received a redesign in 2022, many are speculating that not much will change in the 2-Series’ cosmetics, though big things are peeking over the horizon.

Though no rumors of the 2024 M2 Competition have surfaced yet, BMW enthusiasts are already predicting a significant bump in horses, narrowing the gap in horsepower between the M2 and M4. With competition ranging from Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz to McLaren and Porsche, BMW will no doubt seek to produce high-performing vehicles that rank among the best of the best.
