The Benefits Of Driving A Car With A Supercharged Engine

Summary

  • Similar to naturally aspirated engines Supercharged engines provide quick throttle response and smooth, linear power delivery.
  • Superchargers are mechanically driven by the engine and work more effectively when the air is cooler.
  • Supercharged engines offer increased power and low-end torque, making them a cost-effective way to enhance vehicle performance.

Superchargers have been around for much longer than the automotive internal combustion engine. The supercharged engine was first built in 1878 but was later used in airplanes in 1910. The main aim was to compensate for the power losses at high altitudes. However automotive superchargers would not become available until 1923 first used in Mercedes cars. Since then, they have evolved from the less efficient blower style to the more sophisticated twin screw and centrifugal supercharger used in modern automobiles.

In the modern era, supercharged production has become less common in favor of turbocharged cars. Having said that, it still remains a very effective way of making power without having a bigger engine. Just like turbos, superchargers can also be applied on almost any configuration from inline-four cylinders to big V-12 engines. In this article, we will take a look at the advantages of having a supercharged car, how they work and the types of superchargers available.

Supercharged Engines Are Similar To Naturally Aspirated Ones

One of the major advantages of an NA engine is its quick throttle response. Once the gas pedal is applied the car responds instantly with no delay in power delivery which is smooth and linear. The same power delivery applies to a supercharged vehicle, a supercharged car responds instantly and delivers its power in the same manner with no sudden surge or drop off in power. This is made possible because of how a supercharger works.

How A SuperCharger Works

A supercharger works in tandem with the engine, unlike a turbo which is driven by exhaust gases. Supercharges are mechanically driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft, this means they come on as soon as the engine starts. Once on, it forces cold air from the environment air into the engine which is used to create more power. Just like turbos, superchargers work more effectively when the air is cooler.

There are three types of superchargers:

  • Roots
  • Twin screws
  • Centrifugal

Roots: This is the oldest supercharger design with rotors inside that just trap air and send it directly into the engine. The pressure is determined by the amount of air being moved into the intake manifold. It is the least efficient form of supercharging and is the least favorable design. The roots superchargers are big, and bulky and stick well above the hood, they are mainly employed on old muscle cars and drag cars.

Twin Screw: This is the most common style of supercharger used in production cars like Hellcats, Mustangs and Camaros. These also have twin rotors that have a screw-like design meshed together. The air is compressed inside the rotor housing and sent through a smaller intake tube into the engine. This style of supercharging is more efficient and widely used among OEMs. It also creates a distinct whine which can be heard from inside and outside the car.

Centrifugal: This is the most efficient form of supercharging and looks very similar to a turbocharger. It works by powering an impeller which is smaller than a rotor and spins much faster. Impeller speeds can reach up to 60,000 RPM which is much faster than the engine speed which means it allows for much more airflow into the engine making much more power.

This style is famous among aftermarket tuners as it is used to build very powerful cars for drag racing. Most people commonly refer to these as Procharged cars because of the ProCharger branded centrifugal superchargers.

Supercharging is an easy and cost-effective way to get more power from your vehicle. Adding one would give you an average power and torque increase of up to 45 percent from the standard engine configuration. Since most of them are already made with a particular engine specification in mind, they come complete with supporting accessories to make the installation easier. The biggest advantage of this application is a healthy increase in torque compared to an engine with similar horsepower.

Supercharged V-8 Vs. NA V-10

A good example of the effectiveness of a supercharger is the C7 Chevrolet Corvette. Supercharged versions make more power and torque than the base NA V-8. Even in the world of supercars, the supercharged Corvette makes similar power but much more torque than a V-10 Lamborghini Huracan.

Available Power Throughout The REV Range

The added power is always available from start to redline just like a naturally aspirated engine. There is no drop-off in power since it runs off the engine’s crankshaft. As long as the engine runs, the supercharger is always ready to deliver the power needed.

Power At Any Altitude

The biggest advantage of this powerband is felt at higher altitudes where the air is thinner. NA engines suffer from power loss at higher altitudes due to thinner air but the supercharger greatly compensates for this loss by forcing more air into the engine. This ensures consistent performance in every situation.

Supercharged Engines Are Still Easy To Maintain

Mazda Miata
Bring a Trailer

This is one of the biggest advantages of a supercharged engine since they are mostly built with the capacity of the engine in mind. Almost any size of turbo can be put on an engine as long as you’re ready to build the internal components to match the power output. But superchargers have slight differences as they’re built with specific engine capacities in mind. This means before installing an OEM or aftermarket supercharger on a vehicle, the engine can already handle the power boost with minimal changes needed.

These minimal changes mean your car’s maintenance will likely be very similar to its naturally aspirated counterpart. There’s no doubt the maintenance cost will slightly increase but it is very similar to maintaining a regular engine since most components are still the same. Most OEM supercharged cars have base versions of the same engine and installing one later on won’t void your warranty when using a manufacturer-suggested supercharger.

Fiat 500e Gelateria: The Tiny Electric Ice Cream Van

The Fiat 500 has undergone a transformation to become “the world’s smallest, zero-emission gelateria” in response to stricter emissions regulations for diesel ice cream vans in cities.

This development is a response to the introduction of clean air zones in and around most UK cities. By the end of next year, 14 clean air zones are expected to be operational.

Many existing ice cream vans are outdated commercial vehicles equipped with non-compliant diesel engines. This has resulted in a demand for cleaner alternatives.

Several London boroughs, including Camden, Greenwich, and Westminster, have either banned or restricted the use of combustion-engined ice cream vans due to excessive air and noise pollution. Additionally, the Ultra Low Emission Zone will expand to cover all 32 boroughs, effective August 29. Non-compliant vans within the M25 will incur a charge of £12.50 per day.

According to Fiat UK boss Damien Dally, the Fiat 500e Gelateria Edition is a one-off concept car based on the 500e Convertible that showcases the vehicle’s versatility in city environments. It is small, compact, and electric, designed with the brand’s Italian heritage in mind.

Fiat’s one-off modification of the 500 is inspired by a 1950s local Italian gelateria.

The rear seats have been replaced with a pair of battery-powered freezers. The van is adorned with blue-and-white paintwork and features a folding roof and canopy, adding to its cheerful appearance. Furthermore, it sports a bronze ‘Gelateria’ badge on the front wheel arch, signifying its uniqueness as a one-off creation.

Fiat has also developed a custom chime that takes inspiration from the “operatic sounds of Italy”.

Great resonance: the Yad Vashem exhibition ‘Flashes of Memory’ in Berlin extended – educational partner Volkswagen continues to support visitor formats

In response to the tremendous interest of museum visitors, the exhibition ‘Flashes of Memory. Photography during the Holocaust’ will be extended to January 28, 2024, in the ‘Museum für Fotografie’ in Berlin. The Volkswagen Group will continue to act as an educational partner of the exhibition project, which was originally scheduled to run from March 24 to August 20, 2023. The exhibition in Berlin is on loan from the international remembrance center Yad Vashem and marks the first time that the exhibit has been displayed outside Jerusalem.

As part of its partnership, the Volkswagen Group will help provide educational opportunities to a broad audience for five more months. Volkswagen will continue to support the visitor formats ‘Ask Me!’ and ‘Close up!’. The program ‘Ask Me!’ is available to visitors on Thursday afternoons, Friday afternoons, and weekend afternoons. On these days, guides provide interested visitors with in-depth information about the exhibits and answer questions. The ‘Close Up!’ series will also be extended through the end of the exhibition. During public discussions, experts in such related disciplines as photography and film, history, Holocaust studies, and Jewish studies share their thoughts on the photographs and films on display. Visitors may use both formats free of charge. Since the exhibition opened, a large number of trainees and graduates of training programs at Volkswagen have learned valuable information during tours through the exhibition and in discussions.

‘We are very proud of the decision to extend the exposition of Yad Vashem’s exhibition Flashes of Memory. Photography during the Holocaust now on display at Berlins Museum für Fotografie,’ says Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan. ‘I am filled with profound gratitude for the overwhelming response from visitors. This remarkable showcase stands as a testament to the collective commitment towards preserving the memory of the Holocaust and illuminating the darkest chapters of history.

The significance of this exhibition lies not only in its poignant portrayal of the Holocaust’s harrowing reality but in its unique multilayer perspective. Through the lens of photography, we capture the narratives of the German perpetrator, the Jewish victim, and the liberating armies, intertwining their experiences to form a comprehensive and empathetic portrayal of this tragic era. This mosaic of perspectives serves as a powerful reminder of the human impact, suffering, and resilience amidst the horrors of the Holocaust. The presence of this profound exhibition in the heart of Berlin, a city deeply connected to the Holocaust, sends a resolute signal to the world. It exemplifies how Germany continues to shoulder the responsibility for Holocaust remembrance and awareness. By confronting its past with unyielding courage and preserving historical truth through initiatives like these, Germany sets an exemplar for nations across the globe to foster empathy, tolerance, and vigilance against prejudice and hatred.’

The importance of remembrance culture is also emphasized by Benita von Maltzahn, Head of Volkswagen Culture Engagement: ‘It is extremely important to us that we continuously reiterate together – particularly to the younger generations – how the holocaust came to pass and what fates the countless victims suffered. We do this so that antisemitism, racism, and discrimination can never spread again.’

In the exhibition ‘Flashes of Memory. Photography during the Holocaust’, the Yad Vashem Remembrance Center shows photographs and films that were taken and made of the broadest range of people – perpetrators, victims, and liberators – during the years of the Holocaust. Focal points include the intentions of the photographers and filmmakers as well as the conditions under which the photo documents were made. In the process, the viewing of the images becomes an encounter with their impact.

The partnership for the exhibition is integrated into the comprehensive remembrance work and the Volkswagen Group’s international commitment to culture. For more than 30 years now, the company has been organizing volunteer projects in which trainees support the memorial work in Auschwitz and conduct projects with Holocaust survivors.

2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance First Drive: Electrifying Tradition

Chassis settings, along with engine and transmission response, steering weight, and sound, are keyed to seven drive modes. These include Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, and Individual. Electric activates all-electric driving, Battery Hold saves the charge for later, Slippery is for white-knuckle situations, and Individual allows you to mix and match settings. That leaves Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ as the modes that reveal this car’s true character.

Comfort mode provides the full S-Class land yacht experience. The engine is on but not fully awake, so ambient noise remains fairly low. The ride is at its plushest. Motoring down California’s Pacific Coast Highway, our test car’s carbon-fiber interior trim and AMG badging were the only indicators that we were in an AMG model.

Switch to Sport mode, and you get a subtle burble to remind you that there is in fact a V8 under the hood. As with many other performance cars with programmable drive modes, the steering becomes unnecessarily heavy, but still allows for a fine level of control—which you’ll definitely need to aim a car of this size down a twisty road.

In Sport mode, the S63 no longer feels like an ordinary S-Class. Nor does it just feel like a big car with a powerful engine. It has the confidence-inspiring poise of a true sports sedan, one that impresses not only with its ability to move its considerable girth around corners, but also makes the experience enjoyable. Cars that rely this heavily on tech to overcome the laws of physics can be quite dull, but this is definitely one that makes you want to take the long way home. And that’s before shifting to Sport+ mode, which offers more of everything without making the car too uncomfortable for long stints.
