Lamborghini at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023: from race to road and beyond the tarmac

Sant’Agata Bolognese, 14 July 2023 – Celebrating its 60th anniversary as Goodwood Festival of Speed celebrates its 30th, Automobili Lamborghini welcomed owners, international media and fans at the UK event, who witnessed the unveiling of the Italian marque’s first hybrid endurance racing LMDh prototype yesterday followed by the start of the weekend’s hill runs from six Lamborghini super sports car models.

“Goodwood Festival of Speed provides a perfect environment for Lamborghini to continue our 60th anniversary celebrations in 2023,” said Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “Goodwood is an ideal venue to present our exciting new endurance racecar project and for the debut dynamic appearance of our new flagship hybrid V12 Revuelto: our first new model as we head on our path towards electrification. Importantly, not only do we welcome our clients to Goodwood in true Lamborghini style, but the Festival of Speed is a wonderful opportunity to put our cars and brand in front of so many Lamborghini enthusiasts who visit the UK event over the four days.”

Lamborghini and its Squadra Corse motorsport department presented the SC63 on a dedicated stand next to the Lamborghini VIP Lounge, its moniker celebrating the year in which Lamborghini was founded, 60 years ago. Joining Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr and Head of Motorsport Giorgio Sanna on stage, were special guests including John Doonan, President of the International Motorsport Sports Association (IMSA), and Andrea Piccini, a founder and team principal of Lamborghini’s partner Italian race team Iron Lynx along with team owner Deborah Mayer, DC Racing Solutions Ltd. founder. From 2024 one car will campaign in the Hypercar class of the FIA World Endurance Championship including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a second car in the GTP class of the IMSA North American Endurance Championship Endurance Cup that includes the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring.

Displayed outside the Lamborghini VIP Lounge, which welcomed over 350 Lamborghini owners and guests over the weekend, was the new Lamborghini Revuelto and Huracán Sterrato: in the Supercar class, the Revuelto made its first dynamic appearance ahead of its official driving launch later this year. The first V12 super sports plug-in hybrid HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle) was joined in running up the hill by the V10 Huracán range: the new Sterrato with its special RALLY mode that takes it ‘beyond the tarmac’ on dirt and loose surfaces; the track-oriented STO; the multi-faceted Huracán Tecnica; and the open-top lifestyle Huracán EVO Spyder. From the First Glance paddock, the Urus Performante Super SUV demonstrated its sporty pace and handling as it joined its Lamborghini stablemates on track.

Celebrating the theme ‘innovators of their time’ was a line-up of special models including the game-changing V12 Miura and Countach: the first Super SUV the LM 002; the one-off Reventón; and the present-day Huracán Sterrato, displayed at the entrance way to the prestigious Drivers’ Club in conjunction with Lamborghini’s ‘hyper horology’ partner and official Goodwood Festival of Speed timing partner Roger Dubuis.

Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard is held at the Goodwood House estate in Sussex, UK from 13 to 16 July 2023.

109MPH HONDA CRF450X PROJECT: THE WRAP

The Honda CRF450X has proven to be the most successful off-road racer in the west, with numerous victories in events such as the SCORE Baja 1000, Baja 500, and 24 Hours of Glen Helen. However, it is not known for being a particularly fast motorcycle, and Honda doesn’t even classify it as a race bike in its stock form.

The Honda CRF450X has enjoyed its success due to a combination of its reliable performance and good handling at high speeds, as well as the modifications made by skilled individuals who have transformed it from a trail bike into a competitive racing machine. One such person is Colton Udall, who recently teamed up with Nic Garvin and Ciaran Naran to compete in the 10-Hours of Glen Helen on a stock 2023 Honda CRF450X test bike. In order to prepare the bike for the race, Udall had to make several modifications, including adding CRF450R parts such as the intake valve springs, intake rocker arm, right side radiator, and camshaft (which required some additional machine work).

Udall also incorporated aftermarket parts into the CRF450X, starting with a Vortex ECU and his own custom mapping. He also developed a coolant outlet kit, installed a Pro Circuit T4 exhaust system for weight reduction, and had the bike’s suspension modified by Brandon Peterson at AHM Racing. The modifications included revalving the forks, using stiffer springs and a DLC coating on the lower tubes, and replacing the shock shaft with a larger diameter shaft from AHM. Other additions to the bike include an IMS 2.4-gallon fuel tank, Scott steering damper, IMS footpegs, and Works Connection levers.

Colton, Nic Garvin and Ciaran Naran

The modifications made to the Honda CRF450X proved successful, with Nic Garvin reaching speeds of 109mph in a previous event with a similar setup. During the 10-Hours of Glen Helen, the team faced some challenges, including a faulty exhaust mount that required pit stops for repairs. Despite these setbacks, they were able to work their way up to fourth overall, an impressive feat considering the bike was a stock test bike just days prior to the race.

The noteworthy aspect of this project is that it is not experimental or exclusive. Anyone can build and race a similar bike. Colton Udall is happy to share his knowledge and provide information on where to obtain the necessary parts. For more details, you can contact him through Championadventures.com.

THE LAST CZ

Mike Young on the 1991 CZ 125 MX

While I may not be an expert on CZ motorcycles, I have a deep respect for the brand. Although I have never owned one myself, I did have the opportunity to test a CZ bike back in 1991 when I was a relatively new member of the Dirt Bike team. At the time, CZ had re-entered the export market with motocross bikes after the Soviet Union’s dissolution. I tested a liquid-cooled 125 two-stroke model with a case-reed, power-valve motor, which seemed to be a cutting-edge motocross bike for that year.

Unfortunately, the bike was not ready for the western market and performed poorly during the test. Many of the fuel system’s gaskets and O-rings disintegrated upon exposure to American gasoline, leading to the project’s cancellation. The bike was returned, and the test never made it to print. Two years later, CZ was purchased by Claudio and Gianfranco Castiglioni of Cagiva, but their plans for the brand never materialized, and CZ went out of business in 1997. As far as we know, the 1991 test bike was the only one imported to the U.S., and the photos taken during the shoot are the only evidence of its existence. I believe Chris Hultner took the photos.

SCARY PHOTO SHOOT DEPARTMENT

On another note, I stumbled upon a photo from a KTM shoot featuring Mike Young. In the photo, I can be seen after Mike refused to ride over a razorback in Ritchie Canyon, claiming it was too dangerous. The actual experience was even scarier than the photo shows. Ritchie Canyon was known for intimidating newcomers, and I was considered a local rider. After the demonstration, Mike successfully crossed the razorback and declared it easy. Chris Hultner captured both of us in the photo, and as a playful jab, I chose to use the shot of myself instead of Mike in the test. I still bring it up whenever I have the chance.

Shark Updates The Race-R Pro GP With ECE 22.06 Homologation

Shark has released a new batch of Race-R Pro GP helmets that are ECE 22.06-homologated. These top-of-the-line helmets are designed for racing and are approved for use in properly sanctioned racing events. The Race-R Pro GP has undergone minimal changes to achieve the ECE 22.06 certification, bringing it in line with other models in Shark’s lineup.

The updated version of the Race-R Pro GP, known as the Race-R Pro GP 06, includes several new features. It is equipped with a Carbon Aramid (COVA) shell, a multi-density EPS liner, and an optical class 1 visor with anti-fog and anti-scratch treatments. One notable addition is the 22-percent opacity visor, which provides a light tint and has been requested by professional riders. This visor is also approved for road use during the daytime.

The helmet’s interior liner remains unchanged from the previous version and offers a comfortable fit with high-tech fabric and 3D Morpho grips. It also features an aerodynamic-wind-tunnel-tested spoiler and a design that allows the spoiler to break off in the event of a crash.

The Race-R Pro GP 06 is available in four graphic options: Replica Zarco Winter Test with chrome, Replica Zarco Chakra, Black Matte, and Red Glossy. The helmet comes in two shell sizes, with the split at the medium size. It is available in sizes XS to XL and comes with a racing kit included. The price for the Race-R Pro GP 06 is around $1,100 USD (999 EUR).

Watch F1 Drivers Race Monster Trucks

Red Bull racer Max Verstappen, known for pushing the limits in extreme sports and competition, had the unique opportunity to drive a monster truck. The unconventional race took place in Austria at the Erzberg Mines as a warm-up for the Austrian Grand Prix. Verstappen’s opponent was Yuki Tsunoda, the reigning Unserious Race Series champion, and the goal was to dethrone him.

The monster trucks used in the race were massive, standing over 10 feet tall and measuring 16 feet long. With 500 horsepower, they raced around a recreation of Austria’s Red Bull Ring. Unfortunately for Verstappen, his engine misfired as soon as the race started, giving Tsunoda the advantage. Despite qualifying in pole position with a three-second margin, Verstappen couldn’t secure the win. This victory marked Tsunoda and Scuderia AlphaTauri’s second consecutive win following their victory against Daniel Ricciardo in a boat race in Miami. Regardless of the outcome, the race showcased the impressive skills of both drivers, even in the unconventional setting of driving monster trucks instead of traditional race cars or exotic cars.
